"Why Wait" and "Why To Wait" are two VERY different statements.

Maybe I just need to see the C8 in person, but I think the C7 actually looks better. There's something just off about the C8. Mid-engine is suppose to be sexier, but it feels like the designers got stuck between Italian supercar design and american muscle design

Anyone daily a c7 in the winter? I daily my mustang all year, and I'm thinking of getting a c7 as a daily.

I appreciate the semi-love letter here to the C7. This car is far from perfect, but I agree with their assessment that this car is the ultimate culmination of modern Corvette in an extremely affordable package. If you can just ignore the e-peen of the Z you can get some killer deals on the more "mundane" models. Spring for the 2LT for nearly all the options and you'll be happier too.

I applied for a job where I could make(if I estimated right) $90k-$100k a year, perhaps more. I'm still torn on the C7 and C8 myself and want to get one if I get that job.

I hate the rear of C8. C7 is okay but I like the rear of C6 the most.

Had my C7 for nearly 3 years now, it was my daily for the first year and a half.

I have to disagree with most of their complaints, and really fail to see how they wont be applicable to the C8 as well.

edit: okay, maybe they're not complaints, but "observations" which are pretty subjective IMO

Off topic question, but are Mark and Jack a couple? I've seen some comments that suggest that but I still don't know

[Applause] [Music] so mark we're setting off my Boomer mobile wow that's a it's a smokey burnout you're able to do in this car I'd say goodbye to those tires it's say I know we beat this to death this is a 2019 c7 Grand Sport that I've put 13,000 miles on I've owned it for six months and I've used this as my daily driver slash weekend Tran car auto cross car time trials it's been through the wringer and you had the let's call it the joy of Ossa pounding this thing around yeah I had more time I think to drive this on track which you'll see the footage here in a couple minutes I got to really explore the car at nine ten tenths for the first time and I have a much greater appreciation of seeing just how to a purpose this car is so tell me a little bit about that it's got a very this call it Jekyll and Hyde personality right it makes her a very capable comfortable daily driver that's relatively unremarkable I mean that in a good way right I mean you can sit in traffic you can eat up miles this thing will get almost 27 28 miles per gallon on the highway in touring mode in the softest setting it rides pretty well it's a little stiff yes there's a decent amount of road noise but that's just you know makes between tires and body construction yeah it's an indicative of it this is a car that has a lot of the sound insulation stripped out and whatever you add what is it 335 s yeah whenever you add that type of tire with there's just no way you're gonna have you're not gonna have a note on oysters like that so but again this is a purpose-built car unlike your challengers your Camaros your Mustangs this was built from the ground up to be a dedicated platform a sports car that's not shared with an SUV ten other cars and there's the trade-offs of doing that but on the street it's comfortable so yeah it makes very very when you can get around very reasonable daily driver and when you take it to the track you can go ten tenths not worried about anything mechanically failing you have all the cooling brakes tires in the engine is phenomenal as a track vehicle where this thing starts to falter a little bit and I think it's because it's so good at both extremes you say a street car you're trying to have fun with right this is not a car that you can really tear up and down a twisty road and get to its limits in a safe responsible manner yeah which is where that I have some problems with this and I realize 95% of the people that buy this pop them around yet the the magic of this car is in that last 1 or 2 percent so when you're driving it at 9 or 10 10 it's almost completely flat out that's where this car comes alive and you feel connected with it so let's take a look at some of the track footage here that I drove that's around on motorsports park and I kind of walk you through some of that [Music] [Applause] [Music] this thing is a rocket in a straight line and it's weird because the power is consistent basically from the time you get off the line all the way to red line so it is this really smooth power delivery that wants to keep going and going and breaking everything is smooth on this car just I don't know how to put it everybody says let's look well it's a big Miata and yeah I guess that's a good way to put it because it it still has like a lot of the body control and all the same types of smooth movements that you get from a Miata let's hanno horsepower but you definitely feel the weight and I think that's my biggest thing that you notice with this you have to understand you have to understand body control and throttle smoothness on this car much like you would on a Miata you have to just be patient especially on this this track TMP you know it favors more precision cars more smoothness that horsepower but you would think this car would be a total disaster out here because of the power level and it's so enjoyable to drive and I think that's the main thing that you're gonna take away from this is the Corvette is not just a hammer [Music] all right we're back so now we're in the real world on the street where you can't drive like that and there's some things that I've noticed about this as a daily driver it lacks the theater of its other American counterparts this doesn't have the fun factor of like a Hellcat or the Camaro or the Mustang gt350 yet it still has it's still such a great car but it's just not as good as a street car in terms of fun factor I agree the car I crush up is with an we probably have a conversation for four months basically about this or the GT 350 for me the GT 350 is is far superior gearbox the Tremec and that is better than the traffic in this this 7-speed is I'm very thankful to Manuel I would only buy a Corvette as a manual but it's not as good as say 911s gearbox the pedal placement is not as good as the GT 350 and I don't think the damper options whether you're in tour Street or track have it's not as firm as the GT 350 can go on the track and it's not as soft as that car can go on the street so you're yeah and this is the problem when you try to dual-purpose a car because GM knows what the Corvette it's evident with the CA production the people who are buying this are not tracking it so how do you take a pure architecture for being a sports car and then dial it back for the people that are driving it on the street alt all the time the dampers suffer for it the manual transmission suffers for it and some of the overall characteristics suffer for it but you still have a manual gearbox you still have one of the best streetable sports cars on the market for any price with us I agree the last complaint I have with this car some really a complaint is the engine LT and LS engines while they sound badass and they make a ton of power I think they don't have the character of either of a Hellcat engine or the GT 350 here looming they don't let signal is let me demonstrate [Music] all it sounds very American and good it to me whether you're at a thousand rpm or it's 6,000 rpm it feels the same yeah it doesn't have the drama of the line of the superchargers it doesn't have that peaky sound of like the Porsches it doesn't have it just blacks character but the positive part about that is because the power delivery is just basically a flat line and that means when you're driving it again if you have to be on track to really appreciate this your throttle controlled there's never a time where you hit a peak of boost because there's no you know super charging your turbo charging on this every time you hit the throttle it's completely predictable so when you get on and off of it you can be very smooth it's all up to you and your foot and that's what I love about this yep forgive me if I sound down on this car I'm not in fact I love this thing I own it it's just I think there are some realities of ownership people who buy Corvettes often I think are in the wrong car there are better cars for people who are just looking to have fun on the weekend and never take it to the track right a car that they're just gonna drive every single day this to me embodies the best of what GM has ever been able to do with the Corvette it looks great from the exterior the interior is not totally horrible and it's been refined and massaged to the point of extreme reliability you can count on it on the street on the track and that's something that's taken them a good 15 years between the c5 c6 and now the c7 that you're not gonna get with the c8 that's basically like they've completely hit the reset switch on that and that's what scares me about jumping especially from a GM perspective figured you know what you're getting here and that's why I really like this car and now they're cheap too and that's the last thing to really bring up because there are 3,000 on dealer lots currently or 5,000 yes I'm on the sold cars you can get a really good deal on one of these and for ten fifteen twenty thousand dollars off sticker I don't know if something that does everything as well as this does for the same price right Jack you've brought me in for this much requested c7 Corvette Grand Sport this is a 2019 yeah and I know you're disappointed it's not another BMW I am so glad I've never been so happy to see a GM product in my life right now and you have literally spent what at least 40 hours doing research on your own car how special is that for you it's terrible it's terrible yeah I never wanted to do it but as we did with the zl1 one le we took a deep dive into that and this is going to be another technical expose on everything c7 it's the last model year of this it's the most refined and most developed one of the most developed sports cars in modern history so tell me about it so this car is a c7 Grand Sport is a non 0 7 packaged car so does not have the carbon ceramics the Pilot Sport cup 2 s and the slightly different suspension tuning but let me ask you this mark how does this compare underneath to the c5 we were under before what does it look like to you I it looks similar I will say this it does look similar because you have composite leaf springs in the front and the rear the you can tell in terms of exhaust underbody these subframes look different but very very similar so is it the same no it's not so what GM did when they were designing this car the c5 and c6 are largely similar they took the base concept the transverse leaf spring front and rear double wishbone aluminum body structure that they had before and refined it there are no carryover basically structural components at all the chassis is all new it's all aluminum all the body panels are mix of carbon fiber carbon fiber composites plastic resin it is 60% stiffer than the c6 in fact the base convertible c7 is stiffer by 20% than a zo6 the suspension though it looks similar it's double wishbone and aluminum but they hollowed it out the control arms in L walhalla they are 20% stiffer than the original c6 control arms the cradles are also hollowed out and they are 20% lighter they went to an EPS unit no longer hydraulic and they did that for many reasons but another one of them is stiffness it is four times stiffer than the original hydraulic steering unit that was found in the c6 they also rigidly mounted the steering gear and there's some other reasons and we talked about this in the m3 video which I kind of went into EPS allows you to get into the electronic age of traction stability control certain other electronic factors when you don't have an electronic power steering rack you can't integrate all these systems as well and because the EPS unit can be programmed electronically different characteristics and if you have a variable steering ratio rack like this has you know it definitely gives you more ability if you go from Sport Plus to a comfort mode to change the feel not only change the feel but it adjusts the whole body or the body control systems to adjust traction control levels stability control levels abs activation certain things that every manufacturer is trying to do this way and that's what this allows them to do the Corvette is unique in that whatwhy branagh p diff is the whole system both traction stability drive modes everything to do with this car is incorporate an e-diff there are five levels of traction control in track mode there are there's a different level of traction control for every other drive mode there are like nine different traction modes for this car and it's all controlled by the Edith so when Marc Royce was discussing this car back in 2013 their goal for this was to take their base concept of their architecture a front-engined rear-drive transaxle car to the absolute limit of Production Engineering given a $50,000 base price the narrow-body car that you know the base stingray is relatively cheap at 50 grand and they wanted to maximize performance giving max grip using both suspension architecture as well as rigidity of the body and their Edith one of the things they really liked featuring from my both a marketing standpoint Ferrari uses our technology and you know as an engineering show keith showcase is their third generation of mr dampers they want to e dual pass basically a dual coil mr damper they ran into issues with the c6 and this is why the c7 was on the same formatted of architecture that could take lessons they learned from before there was an issue with mr dampers is that they don't go from full firm to full soft that quickly that's still an issue with these but it's something they remedied with the second electrical coil they added the damper and that's one of the things that you're gonna understand like when you start getting into all this technology magnetic ride dampers allow them to instantaneously adjust from firm to ultra firm and one of the problems with magnetic dampers just by their general make up is your electrifying your exciting the ions in the material so Ferrari uses this Ford uses a lot of companies use this but one of the big issues is it can't go ultra soft like a hydraulic unit or a gas charged unit it goes from a kind of a firm to a super firm and that range can be very wide and you can go ultra firm but you can't get to the soft part and that's the biggest challenge with shocks like this versus like what McLaren or other manufacturers using they can go ultra soft and they can go firm but they can't change that valving on the fly as fast as this and they can make the changes chronically which means is they don't have to change the hardware unless there's a hardware problem the issue with mr Danvers as a whole is they almost act as a another spring that's how stiff they are that's what a lot of suspension tuners will will say that mr dampers are a great solution from a cost perspective but they are not the best solution the last thing to really bring up on the front are these brakes they are six piston front 4-piston rear if you get the zo7 package you which is available on the z06 and a variation that is available on the zr1 you get these massive carbon ceramic rotors and pads unfortunately they are hilariously expensive they are 1,500 a corner okay which is less than some of the competing manufacturers but it's something if you're gonna buy this if you're all you're going to do is putter on on the street the carbon ceramics are gonna last a long time if you're gonna track it this is what you want because your rotor and your pad replacement is relatively cheap in terms of like sportscar things so it's something to weigh when you look at this the other part is aerodynamics you talked about the you kind of talked about some of this but like you said the aluminum here on all the components is hollow but you also see all these grid lines you're like what's that waffle board design and this is how they increase rigidity in the aluminum parts while they're reducing the amount of material as well and you'll see that all throughout this on your body the last thing to talk about here is I would have never guessed this head leaf springs in terms of suspension this is a stock car but I mentioned this in the c5 video and people get all pissed off I'm like why did GM continue with the leaf springs all the way until this so according to mark Royce the former vice president of General Motors it is because it is the most cost efficient method and it allows for packaging options and that's what I mean it's because they're cheap that's really why they did this they they they basically developed this suspension architecture since the c5 when the c5 was developed Jim was broke right they didn't have any money to put it in that platform they're like oh we have leaf springs allows us to have more passenger cargo or sorry passenger capacity so that's what they did it the reason they went away from it is some of the suspension characteristics are a nightmare but be the level of adjustment this car the c7 does allow for full camber caster and toe adjustment from the factory they will even give you track settings which is impressive just like they did in the zl1 but there is not the range of adjustment you'll find in a true coilover so and that makes sense so really the reason that leaf springs lasted all the way through the c7 and they went to coil springs like coil over design typical suspension and the c8 this is all about cost because they developed this to the max to change this to change the suspension suspension architecture would not have been cost-effective to them the only defense I will say this is gonna come up they weigh less and they do they do weigh less than a traditional coil over spring design this is a plastic composite but the overall sealing of performance is far less with with the leaf spring design in terms of overall modification you can't just go like if I want to run two thousand pound Springs which you're not gonna run two thousand pound Springs you can't do this here easily like you could with a traditional coil over shock and a typical suspension setup that's on 99% of every other car and in your defense because I'm sure people are gonna freak out even the engineers in the c8 admit this this that came out in a recent article interview they did with car driver one of the things they really enjoy about the suit the new c8 architecture is the range of adjustment yes yep so I think we beat a lot of this to death I think there's some good information but let's talk about the engine I see a lot of American Muscle here I see a lot of room in this thing to in the front half of this what do you even call this a clam this is a clamshell hood I know that gets you all hot and bothered mark oh it does it does well it's definitely different you could tell this was more of a purpose-built car yes by the way this looks so before I get into the engine I'm gonna bring up something that we didn't before the differences between the I'm gonna ignore the 0 1 because no one owns it that in some money in their hard-earned 50 grand the bass stingray with a z51 package the Grand Sport which this is in the zo6 the zo6 and the Grand Sport share the same bodywork similar suspension tuning brakes wheels and tires so you have the enormous 280 front 335 rears with a 10-inch front wheel and a 12-inch rear wheel which are staggered the base z51 car does not have any of that but the Grand Sport shares the identical transmission cooling differential cooling engine cooling gear ratios and engine interesting while the zo6 gets an LT 4 this is an LT 1 and they get more coolers and it's more powerful and all the other fun but this is the most the Grand Sport is the most ideal package for somebody that wants all the performance all the figured out everything's been figured out here in terms of cooling this is the again the pinnacle of the Corvette here for reliability yes the LT 5 sorry LT 4 has a has cooling issues they tried to address it in 2019 they still exist every tracting i go to it's a tighter track you can forget about running a full 30 minute session particularly have an automatic car what's the deficiency in cooling what's the problem just too much heat too much heat what from the hose like in engine temperatures is it differentials already above primarily engine and trans the diff is fine the diff cooler is identical as that you get in this in Corvettes they have this unique racing technology they got from the c6 are there are ducks but right above the rear fenders the driver side is for the transmission the passenger side is for the diff and there are dedicated coolers in the rear bumper and those ports are just for the differential in the brakes as well there are lower courts for the brakes ok the whole side body panel is hollow and it has air exits by the taillights to move all the excess air out of the vehicle the other thing they did which is shared across all of the c7 s is the rake on the radiator it is a packaging nightmare but they did this because the aerodynamic benefits as a creation create like a high-pressure area where yes it creates additional downforce that routes itself through the exit on the hood interesting there is also a dedicated oil cooler and this again is just for the lt1 powered z51 or grand sports cars which is right below the steering rack is that a coolant based it is a dedicated unit but it is coolant base so it uses the cooling system to do this yes does this have a supplemental pump for that or yes okay it is a very I mean there is so much oil capacity in this car that if you are not running on a tight track if you're running at Road America Autobahn full topeka any of the big tracks you shouldn't run into cooling problems however Corvettes have a very very narrow front grille so if you're in a tight track all the vets have cooling problems Club tracks it becomes an issue temperature Bondurant when they ran these cars is what's called driving instructor vehicles they okay but and so I guess the main thing is here is despite all of this there were still some issues that weren't anything catastrophic but you had to scale back your expectations of how long you could drive this at least in a hardcore manner on track it's still a street car so is there transmission as their engine problems is there any of that despite that so the lt1 engine is in everything it is a fairly unremarkable engine despite its very impressive horsepower and torque figures it's literally if you look at a dyno chart which will pop up its to flatlines it makes the same power pretty much everywhere and early cars had tons of issues okay the the 14 year cars if you look at car driver motor trend I think Edmunds they all had catastrophic engine failures due to a manufacturing error there are basically loose metal fragments in the in the Panza eight motors the next issue that comes up with these cars as its direct-injected so you're probably going to run into issues later down the lines and their cylinder deactivation was their direct injection from the first male er yes all LT 1 LT 4 is and LT 5 switch to the zr1 engines have di it's still a pushrod engine it's very similar to an ls3 but they added di ok the AFM issues though still exists and that's active fuel management I'm sure Scott can talk about that yeah and I asked Scott about this and this is pretty well known that GM has a great history including their modern vehicles that they've been doing over ten years that their active fuel management system which is hydraulic it can it basically it affects the lifters to shut down four of the cylinders and either the lifters get stuck and it causes the camshafts to break there's a whole bunch of things including oil consumption and this is one of the big reasons why I am down on actives or cylinder management on most cars and it's not just a GM thing GM as a really bad problem with it to the point of I'm sure there's some class action they'll void your warranty for two seconds the best thing about it is and this is one of the reasons why I really have a problem with GM is like Scott talks about customers that come in it's like one mile over that initial warranty problem they'll burn you know two quarts of oil or a quart of oil after a thousand miles they won't do anything about it because it's such a known problem that there's no way they could legitimately fix the mechanical part it's just a design defect so this car has cylinder deactivation so how do you avoid it get a manual car okay so before before we talk about transmission so the last thing to bring up is if you have a z51 car is zo6 or is zr1 you get a true dedicated dry sump system okay the LT one has ten and a half quarts oil it is - drain plugs it is enormous oiling system and it is very impressive the motor not to knock it given its reliability problems it's very compact it's lighter weight than a coyote it is very powerful but there are those issues it can be bought with three separate transmissions if you have a 2014 car you have a 6-speed automatic it's terrible it's very reliable but it is very dated you also have an 8-speed automatic which has torque converter issues which they may or may not have fixed but it is also dated that transmission came out in 2015 and was featured in the zo6 it's automatic shift logic is very fast Jim will tell you it's faster than a PDK it may be on paper but when you actually drive it it feels horrendous and that's why they want so a dual clutch on the ca people will defend it but if they defended they do not know what a real automatic or PDK feels like it is very bad I'm sorry just that's the reality it feels very very old so get the manual it is not the best manual in the market we talked about in the 911 it feels a hundred years old compared to that but it is a Tremec unit they shared across the entire corvette lineup it's seven speeds and has active rev matching so if you can't drive manual it basically does it for you any yeah it is very stout it has a cooler the gear ratios were changed along the LT 4 in the LT 5 but this is the same gear ratios as a c-51 car okay it works great it's just very track focused makes sense is there any other reliability information that you need to share Jack yes the wheels Bend it is a let's call it a catastrophic issue that grand sports and zo sixes have they GM claims it's not an issue in fact Ted judder claims it's totally normal but there's a class-action lawsuit I've in fact been two wheels normal driving this is the only car I've bent wheels just puttering around Illinois they are huge that's a problem these things leak it doesn't matter which car you have people will complain about weaking issues like differential diff trans motor there are tons and tons of lines if you buy a car out of warranty you will have a very bad time fixing anything well and we talked about this with the zl1 one ollie there are a ton of coolers on that car and it needs a ton of coolers and I'm I would prefer that it was over called then you having a bunch of issues but this is one of the side effects when you have a high-performance car that requires all these coolers that have coolant lines running all over the place to do this it's one of those you have to do due diligence if you're tracking it specifically you got to inspect the stuff this is the side effect of a high-performance machine there's a price to it and I'm ok with I'm ok with understanding that part of it I'm not ok with engines eating themselves from cylinder deactivation but I understand that lines are mechanical and all that stuff but if you think about the average buyer this vehicle and that's I mean that's gonna come up in the drive but I obviously like this car enough that I bought it but if you're just gonna go to the shop if you're just gonna show off to your guy your guy friends at DC gobs I'm trying to pick up waitresses that are half your age this is not the right car to do it in there are a ton of compromises made to make this a track car [Music] finally this particular car is a 2019 Grand Sport 2lt let's start with the positives of this interior and the first one is that this is a truly usable sports car it's got to be the most practical to door to seat dedicated sports car on the market and that's because the hatch its cavernous you can fit the targa top back there your luggage your track days supplies your groceries I use this car every day without problem because of that hatch the interior cabin is not huge by any means but there are enough nooks and crannies in here that you can put all your day-to-day supplies without too many issues the center display has the GM hidey-hole which is large enough to fit either your wallet or sunglasses back there the glovebox is moderately sized and the center console will fit your phone and it has all your various USB ports the other big positive of this interior is its instrumentation and heads-up display they're both configurable meaning based on what drive mode you're in their layout changes whether it be in Tour sport or track I also really love the information available to you you can see your trans temp your oil temperature oil pressure your water temp your g-forces tire temp tire pressure all in your centre display it is what I want in a sports car now before I talk about the negatives I'm gonna talk about something I normally don't and that's perspective when you're buying a c7 it's often an aspirational purchase I'm aware of that you probably haven't been in another premium sports car but objectively when you're comparing it to something like a 911 Cayman and RC have any of its price point competitors it just doesn't have the same attention to detail it's not horrendous but it's just it feels like the whole car was built to a point on the inside of good enough for example yes the dash is leather it has nice white contrasting stitching however it always reflects into the windshield the infotainment system you know has apple carplay and android auto but it feels very dated the resolution is poor the center display I really like the instrumentation as I mentioned before but it is very slow to react when you change the configuration there's a two three even four second delay sometimes the seats they're way better than what you found in a c5 or c6 they lack the adjustability necessary for certain body types if you get the competition seats instead of an all-new seat the only thing that it changes is the seat Bank these are the Touring's and they're very comfortable but the competition seats are horrendous the audio system in this car is a joke in fact our audio engineer laughingly and he was serious told me this is probably one of the worst audio systems we've ever tested this is the premium Bose system when you get a 2l T or higher car you get about our audio system it's atrocious the only thing that's tested better then was a Jetta GLI with broken speakers it's mind-boggling it's just mix yes if you've come from another premium car it's gonna be a bit of a letdown but you know that is the Corvette is a value buy final thoughts on the c7 grand sport Corvette it's no secret we waited until the end of the generation and do a video on this the c8 sout and everybody thinks it's God's gift to the sports car world well is it I can tell you what it's not it's not completely refined all the problems haven't been sorted out it doesn't have a manual transmission it doesn't have a lot of the things that GM and the Corvette team has spent the better part of 20 years perfecting not only perfecting on the street but on the racetrack real racing and that's what you get with this car now granted most of the owners don't spend any time on the track which is a damn shame when you get this thing out there and you drive it at its maximum maximum level is where you see just how special this is and you have a naturally aspirated v8 that is pretty much bulletproof for the most part the only thing you're going to be doing to this car unless your idiotic is tires and brakes if you don't modify it this is going to be one of the best Corvettes you're ever gonna buy and when you look at the cost just take a look at what they cost on the news market or even new it when you can still find some of these new that are left on the dealer Lots I don't particularly know if you're looking for a performance why you would buy anything else now the negative aspects are yes the engine doesn't have a lot of character it just doesn't it still has a v8 sound but it's just the way that it's tuned it's not peaky it doesn't give me that rush of adrenaline like something like Porsche would make but everything functions very well it's still usable on the street you can get great fuel economy if you're driving around in seventh gear the interior space is designed for bigger people it's not just you don't you don't feel like you're gonna die or you're in an urn jammed into this thing and that's part of the big draw reliability costs owned and just the classic shape and style and you have a manual transmission that's why you would buy this and that's something that I'm gonna tell you that the c8 is not gonna have for at least a couple years until they sort out all the little weird things that they need to do with a modern medicine sports car and GM hasn't done a mid-engine car well I'll let you do the math on that one that's why I would take this over that any day at least in the near future if you're looking for a sports car at a great price this is one of the best on the market thanks for watching I'll see you next time [Music] savage geese yet another notification do you know how rich I am are you not hearing me we unfriend we unsubscribe get it done I'm rich why is this a problem [Music] you [Music]
