Welcome to Miss Sofie’s Storytime. Today we’re going to read David goes to
School by David Shannon. David’s teacher always said...No, David! No yelling. No pushing. No running in the halls. This is classroom 3, it has a red door. This is classroom 4, it has a green door. And this is classroom 5, it has a blue door. I wonder which class David is going to. If he’s loud, then he’ll disturb other
classes. And if he pushes or runs in the hallways then
he might bump into someone and hurt them. David has to learn about all the rules at
school first and follow them. David! You’re tardy! David’s classroom door is blue, so that
means he’s in class 5. It’s important to come to class on time. Otherwise the teacher has to repeat everything
again. Before David sits in his seat he will probably
hang his coat and hat up here on the coat rack. This way his desk won’t be cluttered. Sit Down, David! It looks like David was called up to the board
to solve some math problems. But after he’s done he’s supposed to sit
back down and not fool around. Let’s check his answers and see if they’re
right. 7 + 3 = 10, that’s correct. We have 7 red circles and 3 blue circles. If we count them all together, it’ll equal
10. Let’s count them all together. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. It’s right! This one is 4 + 4 = 7? But there’s a question mark after it, so
that must mean they aren’t sure. Let’s double check it with circles again. 4 red circles and 4 blue circles. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. That one’s wrong. 4 + 4 = 8, not 7. Let’s try the next one, 14 - 12 = 2, let’s
use the circles again. This time we’re subtracting, so we will
take a total of 14 red circles and count up to 12 and then see how many are left. Let’s count together 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,
8, 9, 10, 11, 12. So now that we’ve taken away these 12 circles,
how many are left? That’s right 2, so 14 - 12 = 2. This one you might already know without using
the circles to count. 2 + 2 = 4, let’s try it one more time with
the circles to double check. 1, 2, 3, 4, yup 2 + 2 =4, that one’s correct. And the last one we can see here is 11 - 4
= 7. This one is subtracting again, so we’re
taking away. So we start off with 11 red circles and we’re
going to take away only 4 of them. 1, 2, 3, 4. Let’s see how many circles are left and
that will be our answer. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. So 11 - 4 = 7. That one is right too. So David only got one wrong, he must be learning
a lot in school. Don’t chew gum in class! Uh oh, chewing gum is not allowed in schools. Have you ever stepped in gum by accident or
found some stuck to your desk? It’s so sticky and gross. Ugh! David, raise your hand! David is just shouting out answers, which
means that other people who raise their hand patiently don’t get a chance to answer the
question. It’s important to take turns. I wonder what kind of question he had to answer. The colorful leaves on the wall behind him
are the months of the year. Do you know all the names for the 12 months? Let’s list them, January, February, March,
April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December. Great job. You’re ready to go to school just like David. Keep your hands to yourself! It sure is fun to finger paint, but if David
touches anything else, he’s going to get it everywhere; on the desk and on his classmates. I hope it washes out easily. It looks like he’s using four different
colors to paint with: blue, red, yellow and green. Pay attention! It’s a nice day outside and it’s easy
to get distracted when sitting inside. It looks like David is imagining dinosaur
shaped clouds instead of listening to the teacher. On the window sill there is also a small rocket
ship, a potato growing roots in a glass of water and a globe. Wait your turn, David! David is cutting the line. I bet his classmates don’t like that. He’s supposed to wait in line, like everyone
else. They have milk already on their school lunch
trays and are waiting to get food. I don’t care who started it! Having a food fight is not good. All of that good food has to go in the garbage
now and their clothes are all dirty. It’s not important who started it, it’s
about not making a mess and wasting food.They threw a banana, tomatoes, oranges, the milk,
a sandwich and some other vegetables too . David! Recess is over! It sure is fun to play outside in the middle
of the day, but unfortunately David can’t stay and play all day. Recess is only a short break after lunch time. When it’s over he has to put the ball away
and go back to the classroom and learn. Shhhhhhhh! David is being loud again, but do you know
what kind of room he’s sitting in? He’s sitting at a group desk with his classmates
and they all have books in front of them. There are also bookshelves behind them with
a lot of books on them. David is most likely sitting in the library. And in the library, you have to be quiet. Again? David has to go to the bathroom again. Sometimes it’s hard to learn if you keep
going to the bathroom during class. But if you drink a lot of water which is a
really healthy habit, then that’s what happens. As long as he’s not making it up to get
out of class. That’s it, Mister! You’re staying after school! Uh oh, now David is in trouble. Drawing on his desk is a big no no. That’s what paper is for. Other kids need to use the same desk after
David goes to the next grade. I wonder what the teacher is going to have
him do after school. David, have you finished? David had to clean all the desks, but now
they are nice and squeaky clean. He used soapy water and a yellow sponge to
clean them. Good job, David! David’s teacher is giving him a gold star,
since he cleaned all the desks so well. He cleaned not only the desk that he drew
on, but all of them. Yes, David… You can go home now. After a long day at school, David is finally
finished. He’s happy to go home and play with his
friends. The end. David is learning every day about what to
do and what not to do in school. When things are new sometimes you’re unsure
about what to do. But there will always be an adult like a teacher
or your parents to help guide you. So be sure to listen to them and learn from
