how's everyone doing where are you uh where are you listening from today i have a very special guest that i would like to invite and i think he's here he's coming right through yes he's there what's up dude what's happening what's happening i'm i've been thinking about it all day for this this is gonna be good this is gonna be fun man i'm making my phone really loud boom oh my god i'm sick genius oh dude i mean i i should say the same about you um you know i was watching that i was watching that video of us playing at quincy's thing can you believe that was november it's ridiculous man it's ill oh okay i need like a different patch from you otherwise we're gonna start doing the same stuff i'm i'm gonna i'm in keyscape i'm gonna go i was in key skate dude i was in key escape but what's your what's your patch i was going to go like uh they updated it it's now piano gospel [Music] oh is that that that's like a new keys dude that's that's lush the double diminished all right well if you're if you're rhodes why don't i go piano and then we'll be balanced okay perfect cool man here it goes grand piano i love how we're both sitting with our key escapes are you in l.a right now i'm in l.a yeah where are you i'm in i'm in uh north london [Music] oh so many you know you know what babe you know what babyface told me do you know um you don't know i'm mine somebody told me about the trouble at home uh whip appeal by babyface you know that no i don't know it i don't know that dude um it goes like somebody told me [Music] [Music] do you know a song that starts on minor chord four well the one that comes to mind is not minor it's major but it's um [Music] does it modulate like that no no but it does it's a cool modulation though it goes um it's heroic stuff because i like just upper tone so simple it i love the okay so in pop in everything that we do there has to be more music that comes about with these like starting on weird chords like that because yeah there's this new don't you see like because of tick-tock there's this new rush of influence from like you know people who have never heard like dreams by fleetwood mac i feel like that's going to then go even further and people are going to listen to dizzy kalepsy and and bill evans and like do we just i i just have a feeling it's good there's going to be even more of a appreciation dude i remember like was we first hung out i don't know how many years was it two years ago or something like that it was at your place and i remember i remember we spoke about this because because like we're such coordinators being me and you and yeah and you're like you're like the main cat for like sneaking in jazzy chords into like absolute top 40 bangers you're the guy a little bit just a little bit i agree i think it's like i think there's a there's a revolution at hand and i think i think people are getting excited about chords in a whole new way which is good all right you know who called me right before this this is like such a name david foster called me right before this and he was uh talking to me about because contact just released these wonderful new string patches and they sound somehow they've nailed it and it's even more realistic he was telling me like how he used to play uh string samples and layer them into songs and it made me think like like i'm listening to um shawn mendes new album there's like a lot of uh i forget what the the record's called i have to listen to it again but it's it's it's wonderful beautiful chord rich ballads yeah like i used to hear uh i don't know if you i am the man yeah dude foster was the guy he was but i just think of [Music] it's such a bad guy it's why is this that's a masterpiece of a tune it's something happening [Music] oh wait what okay teach me that because you know more what is that that what is that well that is so my favorite thing with donor chords right this is like one of my one of my new hobbies instead of just like you've got sauce steve that's us and then instead of just like seven or like with the 13 you you you keep the c natural in it so you go like that and then you go [Music] oh yeah so basically it's like c7 over d-flat but then it all resolves yeah yeah and when if you're playing lines like well that that works because you're in like this world like c and b flat but then that it's just like the black jacob so what do you resolve that to [Music] like [Music] like that chord is alien but like i mean both of us are made happy by such sounds but i believe that if you make an instrumental because lyrics always come to me um like later the only time where it's all come at once in me is uh it's see you again when i just like wrote it's been a long day without you my friend just fell out of me that's the only time that's ever happened later you you do look slow i do lyrics um like i'm doing listen listen to this like i just made this i woke up and made this this morning i want to i'm obsessed with when the lyric is like hold it's like you hold me back like someone holding you back from achieving like you know great things um if it reflects in the rhythm and the pitch so if the word is hold you hold the note like so yeah i these lyrics aren't final yet but um this is like the half pre going to the chorus [Music] oh it sounds like bon jovi in the beginning i just made this this morning and there's no lyrics on it yet it's there's no lyrics on it yet but like i'll i believe what i was saying is if you have chords and you do this really well in your music too if you have chords and you have melodies um they almost should sound like the lyrics you're about to put on it like yeah in any one of your albums i can mute your vocal and almost know what the song is about because it's like speaking it for you so so you are you saying you came up with and you mumbled it and then it was like oh yeah i i just got out of i i i went through something uh last year where i just was around the wrong kind of person and i felt that they were holding me back and i felt like not as good enough music out and they were like they were like holding me back for achieving like real great life things like you know so it's true it's true it always has to be the truth this person was holding me back from achieving what i wanted to achieve um and i just kind of woke up this morning and i repeated like most of my songs like i just repeated that in my mind like you hold me back and like what if you just held you held hold out oh and you're literally working so well dude it works so well and also like the beginning those vocal stacks i mean it's just butter it's like shout to the heart [Music] listen to this listen this verse melody it's like this is gibberish none of this makes sense but it will [Music] i can't believe [Music] [Applause] after all [Music] what were you doing there oh it's just like yeah yeah [Music] yeah those are twisty chords you think it's going to go to a minor [Music] there's [Music] do you know fine 100 ways by quincy [Music] who else does whole term donor voice things man [Music] well stevie and quincy were like the originators of that because they have jazz backgrounds and they were they had that that that pop sent both of them have that pop sensibility yeah where they're able to just seamlessly they don't use all their bag of tricks at once they make it because not everybody's going to understand what jacob when you and i do so you gotta like you gotta just use it sparingly but he i mean man that's that too [Music] is it [Music] uh [Music] the textbook is awful [Music] what are you listening to right now uh new dirty projectors at record have you checked it out no five eps dude it's just killer that's that's a killing album that's like a that's on my that's on my radar right now what else i've been listening to um casey muskrates oh my god yeah yeah i'm adding that coordinate open your mind [Music] is [Music] you know what that chord just like five over one that's like that's underrated but it's killer just like like not like with the third we're just like like think of yeah just oh what's in the tune um you know [Music] i love how you change the keys to the relative key of what we were talking about we're talking about damn well it's [Music] [Music] yeah it's my favorite thing ever [Music] yeah i'm needed sure all of berkeley is watching right now also just like this is so epic [Music] what is your favorite song that um has like what in your opinion i'll rephrase what what's what's your favorite modulation i have my answer but i was super intrigued i mean the end of after the love is gone is up there for me man [Music] [Applause] [Music] that's amazing but dude you know this you know this group takes sex of course you know quiet place no wait hold on let me just i have spotify up here yeah me too this is [Music] isn't that amazing [Music] oh [Music] [Music] oh come on man that that knocks me out dude how do i even begin i don't know i i think there's a story about take six where like they used to be a five-part group or four-part group and then i think that was a five-part group and then merv who's the guy who wrote and arranged that he like walked past this bathroom when they were rehearsing on campus at oakwood in nashville and he just like walked in and sang the sixth part and that's like that's how take six was born it's just it's just amazing that's so iconic do you ever listen to snarky puppy dude yes thing of gold you know yeah the epic [Music] solo [Music] this song is like a very bittersweet um sentiment to me because then i heard it the night before the uh uh the marathon bombing in boston because i was living in boston at the time so i listened to that song that was like it was like the first time i ever got high i had really like oh my god and i don't really even smoke that much anymore but like i i was in 2013 i remember i was living in on commonwealth ave in my apartment and i will never forget just when it just kept modulating and like being high like slowed it down like it just almost extended there were only like 36 bars but it made it feel like 136 bars and but then the next day that horrible thing happened and then so i always it's i can listen to that song but not too much because i get it i get it yeah they find a way to like every time it was just like no no i don't believe it oh when they go to eat yeah no they have a way of navigating it it's super special and corey and everyone man have you hung with corey he came remember i had well you weren't in town remember i wanted you to come to this is way before pandemic but i had my jazz party yeah in my house cory came um we had adam there tony royster was there yeah all my band d cops dimitri yawn it was a fun time damn i can't believe i i haven't made it to one of those that's okay next year we're going to do christmas jazz party oh christmas 21 dude i'm i'm ready i'm so ready for that i can't hear you oh no you're going to you know so good yeah sorry i was just i was just get i was getting a call live live has to like cancel out any calls that happen i know yeah it's just strange no my favorite modulation yeah like a very very it's a very very underrated um you know like it's diane is so good at sneaking those like she went down instead of ups yeah oh it's ridiculous because you know the thing is that everyone goes up everyone like goes up a minor third right it's just classic like that going down is heavy like going down a major third is ridiculous it's just like it's like a new color [Music] wow yeah wait till you hear um my song with elton john i heard about that i haven't heard the tunes but wait what's the vibe what's it like oh i if it were just me i would play the song but like i don't i wanna i don't wanna play it until like he's because i he loves it i just don't want to i don't want to play without his permission but i get it i will tell you it goes okay so uh it starts uh an f major this is the chorus [Music] and by the way he sat down and played this whole thing from just how about this [Music] and then i got [Music] but he sat down and um because you know he he's a genius where he gets the lyrics he reads the lyrics and then sees the music in the words but we both really i don't write poems i don't like write lyrics fully out like bernie tap and so we uh we were like oh are we going to be able to write something and he sat down and just played the entire what would be three minutes and three seconds he played the entire thing and then i wrote the lyrics after the fact it was kidding it was insane but had he planned it like did he have in his head or was it was it just improvised do you think he just had he just sat down it just fell out i have sorry i have this uh uh this rhodes here look at that picture and uh it's gorgeous he sat down at that roads and just i guess he liked the sound of it because it's kind of clunky sounding i love it beautiful yeah this one doesn't happen when's that when's that dropping when is it when's the tune coming out whenever i decide to put out the first single um that is going to i would love for that to come out like immediately after because i really think it's going to the world up yeah yeah i think when you release that the internet may not it would be the same again you and i remember when you remember the thing that you and i made i wonder if i can find that was it like let's see if i can alright because i have my little harmonizer with me like are we plugged in and you recorded one krk in mono i know and i remember being like dude really if booth does this i feel so seen like i feel forgiven for just like being lazy with my engineering because you were just like that's like 1k okay with like where's like a 58 or something you had there or like a like a four did you know when i i'm the worst did you know that when i made voice notes i had the wrong plugs plugged in to each speaker so left speaker was right you told me and you told me this that's awful i mixed the entire album with the wrong sides of speakers it was completely out of phase the entire time that's insane wait was that anything was out of phase was there any was there any moment in the other way that was a big problem where you were like to the left to the right or something it was like you know i'm just such a i never even knew when i never thought i guess there's not a lot of panning on that album but like i i just i there's this myth that like people like you sit in rooms with like insane amounts of gear where it's all working perfectly and just like have this super refined setup but the reality is like you just muck around and it's like oh let's get this let's record this like what was the tune you recorded on your on your phone with the guitar we don't talk anymore there you go yeah that is like uh i probably still have the voice notes yeah right it sounds it sounds better like i don't know it's just there's something about it's like so handmade you know but yeah it's it's like you you do less plug-ins on it or something like if i i was um my bass player i told i sang something to him over a voicemail i'm like can you send this to me and he professionally recorded it he went he has a really nice studio he recorded with all these neve plug-ins and i'm like i was actually hoping you could just put your phone up to a amp and just play it and it sounds all up in the store it has more character it's hard to explain yeah no i feel you i feel you no i i just personally remember like like coming to the studio of yours and it was just like yeah we'll make up and then i remember my harmonizer was tuned to some weird tuning system like just like i think it was just intonation in like one a weird key it was all like when i when i played it in but yeah it was cool the vibe was good though i i remember liking it it was killing it uh what was [Music] but then didn't do something crazy didn't it go like did it change you did like a cluster everyone's like what the are you guys talking about they've never heard this song yeah i know yeah this is an unheard completely unreleased track oh i think it was it was that yeah man like someone double diminished just freaks me out but you know what i figured out recently triple diminished what does that work i'm deadly serious so i figured there's a voicing for triple minutes and this is it okay okay so this is this is like one of my favorite dom sports of all time it's the ultra dominant chord dominant chord mother of all dominant chords [Music] so far so good right [Music] and now it gets weird [Music] [Music] that dude that's every note of the chromatic scale bro how are you supposed to play that though in one sid [Music] but you know what i'm saying all my friends are texting me best live stream ever oh my god shout out to you patrick he just texted me dude that's killer but the thing about that chord the d7 chord is like you would never like play as a voicing in like a jam session because everyone's like dude what how are you doing but you could play it like you could you could outline like e flat major at the top of the voicing that's out like [Music] and that's like so out because your ear hears this and it's like oh yeah d but then it's like no so it's just like you can climb in the structures i love it [Applause] are you working on new yep i've got i'm drowning in demos i've started so many things i haven't finished them if i i should definitely send you some but yeah i want to be i want to be part of it can we plea can we please do this yeah i'm doing this massive like quadruple record and i've done three out of the four of them and so volume 4 is like this this like unknown thing but there's all these different spaces i've been exploring but the funny thing is i've written so many songs from the point of view of music but just songs as songs i haven't done as much so that's kind of what i want to explore it's like kind of uncharted to be like i'm going to write a song that's not about like this crazy language or a space it's just it's just a tune like i can play on a guitar so i think what would be cool is if you kind of did like what i want to do a record like how you do and you should do a record how i do where you use maybe 10 of your brain power but it's not that's the wrong word you're of what um you can put in a song and make it the most pop appealing to go to john ivey a kiss and like play it like dude that's like faster i know you can do that i i mean i i've been messing with it and i'd love to but i'd also love to hit the record you make if you just if you use like a thousand like a thousand degrees heat of all of your like nerdiness that i know is in your mind that's just goes free you know it's just about i can i've gotten into the habit of like just like my used to leak all the time and now it's like it's almost better if leaks you have to be the guy to leak it though right like okay so you have okay so you have like a crazy like i'm always trying to push the limits of how crazy can you get with melodies where people because sometimes it's you want your audience to be able to sing your melodies but you don't want them it's you don't want the melody to be so hard that so there's two sides of it you want it to be easy enough and approachable for them to want to sing it at a concert in their car you don't want it to be up here where it just goes over their head and only like guys and girls who are really studying music like you and i and are like transposing and all doing all this can sing it because that's alienating like so many people and but there's a middle ground where if you just get if you get it right in the middle so i i wrote this melody this is like almost just on this is almost hitting the red line of let's have it too hard to sing oh i think it's this we stay stay away from each other cause we can't be justification i love the lovers even though i want to stay stay away from each other [Music] here's something that i never thought that i would say to a person who is beautiful in every way but you're loving doing it for me [Music] [Music] from each is [Music] [Music] [Music] it's like it's not illogical still you're using you're hopping around triads and stuff right yeah so you're ready you can hear your way through it it's not like it's foreign but it's it's beautiful it's thank you it's like all those like with cheesy 80s ballads like push without sounds yeah you love you love mine for dude you always play minor four it's a fail safe it's a fail safe and it's in because i love baptist choir music like [Music] yeah dude you know but you know when you're on a minecraft four like that like you know what no i think it's underrated here is the f-sharp [Music] [Music] yes don't yeah you're right it is underrated i don't know why no one ever uses f sharp dude because really what that chord is is f sharp seven without an f sharp in it right yeah it's just like uh like i love when there's a b flat at the end oh that's that's church man that's straight church it's beautiful but if you implement a little bit of church [Music] yeah i can listen to you play that all day it's essentially [Music] it's the same note dude it's the underrated b flat that's where you should call your album the underrated b-flat [Music] do the a major [Music] you know one last cry by brian mcknight oh dude yeah [Music] [Music] uh [Music] you're crazy dude you know what you know what else i'm like you know overjoyed no you're [Music] to get there it's crazy [Music] oh [Music] so good that's not on talking book that's on uh with plants isn't it yes it's on and that album's so crazy because it's all like the sounds are so interesting and strange like watery sounds like the behind overjoyed is like some tropical forest you know on the record it's like with like water it's it's crazy steven the 80s is crazy man do you think oh yeah stevie stephen is i can't remember i heard this the other day it was an 80 stephen i don't think i know that one what's [Music] that i can't if anybody in the comments knows what oh i don't know that tune man yeah i need to check out in square circle because that that's like a lot of my friends have been like in square circles the heaviest stevie album and i'm always like someone's in the key of life and they're like no no seriously check it out there's one tune on it i know which is oh if ever album uk version [Music] yeah oh stevie man no the one i know from the one from this album is where is oh what is it that's it it sounds like i knew you before i loved you by savage garden that is correct uh but it's it's in a step higher i'm sorry i don't know that too what's this oh whereabouts [Applause] [Music] just like wow the intro is just so good [Music] yeah dude so diminished chords right my favorite thing about diminished chords is that they you can take angel into chord it always goes in four directions equally so if you go [Music] oh [Music] so like f or a flat or b or d g what i mean so you can always you can always go [Music] e major oh yeah [Music] uh [Music] steve i think this is why i like just have had so much like trouble dating because nobody gives me the feeling that chords do that's not to say that that's never gonna happen but the day i meet somebody and then i meet um that this anyone that's gonna like be like be the human cord she's just yeah well right now she's oh that's not good yeah no what you want is you want this that's what you want that i think that might be my favorite chord but that's just just like i like [Music] there you go [Music] i don't have enough keys yeah dude emily did you tweet about which by the name bewildered oh [Music] best melody yeah but uh what what keys is it in oh wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait i was doing ah you were you were doing it i was doing another one you were doing it [Music] that's the one dude [Music] oh dude what did you did [Music] so [Music] that's my favorite voicing man that one [Music] [Music] [Music] nice [Music] what's the middle section oh is that what's the one you're saying already oh no it's uh no that's right that's right [Music] that's my favorite melody of um i think in the great american song book that's like my favorite of all it's a killing you know what you know what which one's uh fun to harmonize you know plenty to a kiss play it he goes [Music] it's just all chromatic and lush i love that would you crazy someone just wrote good lord i agree dude what other standards do you like if we're talking great american songwriter um you know the [Music] i can [Music] [Music] what other standards are there you know um part of me no oh please no no what about like you know uh do you know what's it called yeah this is a fun conversation oh wow look how much i'm sweating right now [Music] that's a lot uh what was what i was thinking of you were probably thinking of uh body and soul body and soul wait how does that go again i don't know why i'm not blanking [Music] oh you know [Music] nigeria spelled backwards i do yeah [Music] man it's been a long time that's a killing one been a long time since i've like gone to are we ever going to be able to go to new york again and just like go to birdland and just dude did you hear that the the the jazz standard closed just now in new york just sound it's like a classic classic jazz venue and it just shot it's not good that's very sad yeah everyone's why are you everyone's like why are you dissing all of me yeah all of me is not my personal fave i was good but yeah it's it's like it's like like eye of the tiger but it's like dude you mentioned you mentioned emily but you know laura oh my god is that it yeah i probably haven't thought about that song in 10 years and it just popped into my wait you play and then [Music] she gave you every first kiss yeah wow you know you know uh candy by lee morgan like [Music] oh yeah you know cute [Music] [Music] i don't know this one [Music] yeah i've never heard that in my life but now i have it's uh it's it's kind of like a cheesy jazz song but like david ben [Music] hold on if i type in why is my keyboard typing backwards see david i got it it's like super elevator music dude that is do you know this one you must know this one i know wrong version flash you minded that version which one [Music] what is this bill evans i feel like i'm figure skating in like upstate new york there you go exactly the right vibe no bills bill's the man absolutely the man john mayer showed me a book that um and it was a phone book herbie's number was in there his actual number was in there and it was a handwritten like number book and at the end of his life you could see his handwriting kind of start to diminish it was very uh it was very haunting i'm not usually like triggered by handwriting but that was really interesting so so what what was in the book it was you know it was dizzy gallepsby's number it was miles davis's number oh it's like it was like a handwritten phone numbers handwritten phone book and it was at the very beginning of the book it was super neat and he had beautiful handwriting and at the very very end it was like scribble wow that's crazy very like haunting yeah for sure damn dude now he's the man bill dude he's superb you're the man when are we gonna make something damn it damn it i mean i'm i'm ready i'm ready send me send me a like a loop send me like like and then i'll like take it and transpose it and do something on and then you'll hear that and be like oh i'll do that let's just like go back and forth on it i'm ready so ready and we have to do more of these lives i think i know this is like this is so life-affirming for me man it's like just chords all day long i have my candle burning in the background there is two no are they centric candles are they just candles one is scented and the other one is not it is more of just like an energy candle i don't know if it does anything but makes me happy it probably warms you up look what i look what i have here i'm growing a mullet this i i stole this from the grammys last year i picked it up at the table somewhere and it does this oh no don't fail me now i i have a spare wait you spare you just stalls there you go there you go there you go this is my version of your candle but it's completely fake do you not like smoke in the studio no i'm not a smoke guy smoking studio would be like so yeah i have i have false candles with good memories attached to them well that's all that matters yeah that's all that matters dude let's let i think we're i think this is a good place to end i feel like we're going to overload people we could go with you forever but i think we're good let's do this again let's let's make music send me some i'll send you some i just forgot that we were on live i thought we were facetiming i was like yeah man like but like yeah there were like 7 000 people in here yeah i know right yeah everyone's been thanks for everyone's comments it's been yeah seriously it's been super fun i can't wait to watch all the uh the screen grabs of us doing crazy faces yeah that's how i'm going to spend the rest of my night um
