my i can't believe that i'm  sharing this with you because i've kept this to my self for many many years the thoughts of a place for my dad the guest house   of he could paint there and i was  just so excited to have a home again and he didn't make it didn't know  what was going to happen i had no idea   that marysville was going to  turn into a nightmare for me   somebody were to be standing in the middle of  a highway and they know that something's going   to happen that's the expression that she had just  closed my eyes and i could see her face right now houdini said to his wife if anyone   is able to get through that veil of  death and communicate i will be that one that's when i knew i had seen something that  i was meant to see and that really got me i was born in wilmington north carolina  my folks are country folks that   believe in the gospel and they believe in spirits  they believe in ghosts it was all a part of my   culture growing up the fact that we believe in the  other on the other side people on the other side   could come back we just believe i mean  simple as that we just believe in ghosts i can't believe that i'm sharing this with  you because i've kept this to my self for many   many years when i announced my retirement  back in 1982 it really took me by storm   the fact that i had an injury that stopped  my career my boxing career and his tracks i had retired from the sport of boxing because  of an eye injury because of detached retina   i was only 25 26 years old i know that any elite  athlete prominent athlete when their career comes   to an end it's rather mentally and spiritually  traumatic and it's how we deal with that situation i was trying to find myself and i  was trying to find myself through   some tough times through alcohol and and drugs  although i had everything i had i had money   i had fame i had accomplishments  uh but i had low self-esteem i was living a very miserable life i  was lying to myself that i was happy my wife and i was having we're having  a pretty tough time in our marriage   because of me because of my my unhappiness and i i was just searching  for a sense of calm at that time i was not at all content with with my life and i recall one night that particular  night my wife and i were awakened by hearing footsteps in the attic like kids and i went up there with the flashlight and there was no one that saw nothing so the next morning the exterminator came  over to see whether or not they were rats but that that was not wretch those were  not rat sounds it sounded like kids   running around upstairs in my attic so the next night there was just a different feeling in the air my wife and i went to bed my kids were asleep  and all of a sudden it was this feeling that i   had that someone was standing by my bedside and  i i kind of opened my eyes a little because i   thought it was my kids because they always come to  my room but this particular night i felt a little shivering i felt a different kind of presence and i saw the most beautiful little girl  i didn't have a daughter i i had two boys   little ray and jerrell and she stood there with  the biggest eyes the most beautiful little eyes   and she looked just as peaceful and nice and  sweet as anyone would want that daughter to be   i just stared at her for which seemed like 10  15 minutes and tried to figure what was going   on what was happening and for some reason i  reached to touch her to see if she was real and i touched her face then  all of a sudden her face just became distorted a mass of just flesh she looked as though she was  burned and that that scared the hell out of me   i was trying to make out what exactly is  going on here and then all of a sudden   i smell gas right away i woke my wife  up i said do you smell gas she said yes and i had totally forgot about the little girl  because now there is another crisis there is gas   fumes in my home i smell gas right away i woke  my wife up i said do you smell gas she said yes and i had totally forgot about the little  girl because now there is another crisis   there is gas fumes in my home we need to get  out of the house before that house explodes going to my kids room the smell was so  strong and it was it was thick it was dense   and grabbing keys and just  rushing to get out of there i ran to the garage got in the car just took off and driving down the freeway and just trying to figure out what  what what the hell just happened and i'm just freaking out just saying god  my family could have died we could have died   but i had to keep calm i had to keep  my hands on the wheel for my family we finally made it to my my mother-in-law's house   i was more shaken up than the the family  because i i knew what i saw i saw a girl then i called my handyman that night i  said listen you go to the house tomorrow   because we have a i think there's a gas leak  so that night i i didn't sleep that well   woke up the next morning  and i called him right away   i said craig so quick what happened  man what happened he said he said mr leonard you um there was  no gas you don't have gas i was i was freaked out i just couldn't  make out what the hell had happened that   night and to this day i mean i  never disclosed that that story   and what i heard many years later  after i had vacated the house that someone had died in that  house there was a little girl killed in my house how symbolic that was for  that little face a little girl   to visit me at a time when i was  in desperate need of assistance it really put things in perspective  of how important how special   my family is to me at that precise moment  of smelling gas fumes in my home i was   my first instinct was to get my family  to safety to get them out of that house i needed this wake-up call i believe in guardian angels  my life is a testament to that   i step into the dark period the dark darkness  i should say but i've come back into the light there is another level out there people  don't believe in it that's fine but there   is it's no no question and i know that i  connect a lot of times to the other level i grew up in the lower east side in manhattan i  grew up in this tough neighborhood and everything and my father was an artist  a wonderful abstract painter and we lived in this really cool synagogue and it wasn't it wasn't quite renovated he just  like moved in and pulled out the pews and when   you'd walk in there was this big door with a  knocker i swear to you look like the monsters   and i'm not even kidding and there was actually  four floors the first floor was the house and   then the second floor was my father's studio  my father was a wonderful charismatic man   people fell in love with him he'd be up  there painting and doing sculptures and   he'd smell the paint and it was just it was  a very special time and it really defined   me when i look back being older how i miss  that home and the building and the character it really was such a beautiful part of my life due to things in life and having a father who  was an artist and probably somewhat dysfunctional we didn't get to keep that building so we had  to sell the building and make no money and   many years went by my dad went  through a lot of hard times around eight years ago things were going well  for me and i finally made some money and i was   like dad i'm gonna buy a house and i was really  excited because i was lucky enough to get a home   in montauk and i was so happy there was such a  great feeling that i could have a home to share   with my family and my dad because it had been  many many years where my dad did not have a place   look how beautiful it is i was like dad we finally  have a house and i have this little guest house   and my cousin ralph is an artist too and  he painted the name because i was like dad   you could have your studio over  there and he wrote domenico's studio the thoughts of a place for my dad the  guest house of he could paint studio there   the first thanksgiving and and people i  was just so excited to have a home again i moved in i guess it was  the first of july and then   my dad had been a little sick and he said  oh no no i'm gonna come i'm gonna come the summer goes by and he falls and   breaks his hip we're gonna have the whole family  over for thanksgiving and um he didn't make it he died october 25th he never got to see the  house he knew i had it i know that he was   happy that i had it the hardest thing  is not getting to spoil him there so you know after he passed i had to go to his  little apartment and i you know clean it out   and he had a lot of artwork and what i did  was i moved his stuff to the guest house   so it was not too long after my dad had  passed little funny things started to happen all these electrical things it was just  going on by itself or going off by itself all this electrical stuff with the coffee maker  my dad was a crazy coffee person loved coffee he put it on and then it would be off he shut  it off or it would be on and it was really scary   a little weird now i've taken a lot of his paintings i've  paintings all over the house and then one day every painting will be like tilted and you have  to fix it but not just tilted but like really   off kilter we're not having an earthquake  it's not like the cleanliness was there one day i'm at the house just like cleaning  in the kitchen and getting things organized and i saw something in the  guest house like a movement and i'm thinking oh you know  that's george he's like you   know he's over there my boyfriend's over there like a few seconds later he  comes upstairs from the basement i got like a funny feeling i was  like well i thought you were at   the guest house and then i look over  and i see a figure in the house got like   a funny feeling i was like well i  thought you were at the guest house   and then i look over and i see a figure in  the house and i was like whoa what is that i went over nobody was there but there was a feeling in there and then all of a sudden there was this swoosh  like something i swear like like a energy whoosh by i was scared because obviously  what is it it just seemed like so much power just swooshing by and this painting that i had put  up over the cabinet was moved and i was like yup that's my dad this  is my dad here and it was really clear   and he made a statement to  let me know that i'm here my father loved thanksgiving you don't even  want to know how much you love thanksgiving   so though going through his artwork and i found  this beautiful painting i was like i want this in   the dining room after i framed it and put it up my  friend peter who was really close with my dad said   do you know the name of that i didn't look  at the back with the name and he told me   it was the first thanksgiving so i picked without  knowing a painting that was the first thanksgiving   he wasn't there physically but he's  always there every year when i have   thanksgiving i'm like hey dad it's it's  a great feeling to know that he's around i come from chicago and i grew up as a pretty  rough and tumble guy not too many things scared me   but i could tell you now after  that night i'm a believer it was 1975 and i had been in los angeles for  about three years trying very hard to be an actor   i got lucky and scooped up an abc movie of  the week called the kansas city massacre which   starred dale robertson and beau hopkins and it was  about the 1932 era of the days of the desperados   we were shipped off to marysville california which  is about three hours outside of san francisco   a little town not much there you know  a gas station a general store and the   the town itself was an eerie  town and quite frankly creepy i didn't know what was going to happen i had  no idea that marysville was gonna turn into a   nightmare for me we pulled in and when the studio  trucks pulled in it was like a big barnum and   bailey circus hitting town and all the people were  really excited and i was excited and i could pinch   myself because i remember i finally said boy i'm  finally a movie star the hotel was an old hotel   two-story and i was up on the second store i had  balcony the layout of the room wasn't much it was   kind of stark there was a desk which the telephone  was on the phone was very old you know in the   screen actors guild they say that they have to  put you up in an a hotel but i don't know what   happened that time but this this place was kind  of worn with the times and then that night we had   our first dinner and the dinner was the entire  cast including dale robertson and bo hopkins we mainly told war stories dale was smoking  a big old stogie and i had the time my life   because i said geez i can't believe i'm sitting  here with these guys and talking about movies and   it was just a thing that i won't forget  and i remember when i met the waitress she was very stunning her hair was put back  in a bun golden she had green bluish eyes   i was attracted to her and she  was just a sweet sweet girl   couldn't do enough i could just close my  eyes and i could see her face right now towards the end of the evening  i wanted to give her my name   and my room number of the hotel i thought i'm  going to uh invite her on the set for lunch   and said look if there's a problem call me  if there's anything you need anything at all she just looked at me and smiled her  eyes and her expression on her face were   sorrowful there was something wrong i had no idea what was wrong but i did   mean what i said when i said if you have a  problem if you need me call me i meant that as we were leaving i did wave goodbye to her   if somebody were to be standing in the middle  of a highway and there's a truck bearing down on   them and they look and they know that something's  going to happen that's the expression that she had i went up the stairs to my room and got  into bed and i was like alone in this   creepy room in this old creepy hotel about two or  three o'clock in the morning i heard this knocking you couldn't see hardly anything  figured it was the front door and there was nobody there and then  said it must be my next door neighbor the thing that was weird is that the walls were  thick and that's another thing that came to mind   when i heard the knocking is how could anybody  knock on these bricks that looked like fort knox so i got back in bed and not  long after that i heard this and i bolted out of bed and this time   i walked out and i looked over and there  was a window and i peeked through it it was dark and there was a curtain and i  could see a figure in bed so i know whoever   was in bed was obviously asleep and not  knocking on the wall so i went to my left and that's when i freaked it was a bearing wall if there was anybody knocking well  they had to be floating around i know whoever was in bed was obviously asleep  and not knocking on the wall so i went to my left   and that's when i freaked it was a  bearing wall if there was anybody   knocking well they had to be floating around i was trembling and i went back  into my room and the room got cold and   it was a summer night probably 80 85 degrees  and it was cold enough that i was shivering and i grabbed the phone and i answered and all i could hear was the static and crackling  and there was this inaudible voice but i couldn't   make it out and i could hear shh all this  static and i could hear this voice this   distant voice he kept saying help me boom i hang  up hello hello i hear this strange hairy voice   i'm thinking to myself oh god this isn't happening  the knocking the ringing i was totally confused   i i didn't know up from down and then i felt  somebody there it was her it was the waitress it sounds insane but i could smell there  was a scent she was there but she wasn't   as kept as she was in the restaurant her eyes  were not as bright and sparkly as they were   an expression on her face is sorrowful help  me and the next thing i know my front door   bam burst open and there's cops and i turned  around and the minute i turned around she was gone   every day you larry manetti trying to  call you but the phone's been unlocked   we've been trying to call you but your  phone doesn't work he says it doesn't work   and i'm going what is this guy nuts and the two  cops went over and they looked underneath the   table and i pulled up this frayed  wire and said it's not connected   i knew that something was going on and inside  of me i knew that this is really bizarre because   something's wrong the phone's been ringing and  i knew it wasn't them they said you got to come   down to police station we got some questions to  ask so off we went and when i got to the police   station i explained that the waitress in the hotel  that had waited on us was murdered in an alley her throat was cut and they found this  piece of paper with my name and phone number   and room number it was like somebody hit me with  a left hook it was just staggering i realized that   she had come to me because i  gave her the note and told her if   she needed help to call don't hesitate  to call okay and she called it was a loss i felt that i had known her that she was there after the movie was wrapped i got  a call on the marysville police   and they said that her husband had  slit her throat from ear to ear and he's the one that murdered her i think that maybe she felt a need  to come to me i think that she   felt that i was the only  one that she could come to i feel bad that there wasn't  something i could have done   to prohibit this but i know i saw her and the  feeling will be there for the rest of my life i think i believed a lot more in the  paranormal when i when i was a boy   than i did as i started to grow older  until something happened to me personally i'd shot a movie called houdini  about the life of harry houdini   in the community of the magic he is the  he's the master because he was the first   one to really bring it out in a big way in  a commercial sense i was getting to play a   a real person and so i did everything  that i possibly could to learn as much   about him as a person and things that he  accomplished and why he was so good at what he did   houdini uh in the later part of  his life after his mother passed   he had a passion to communicate with her on  the other side of the veil of death and there   during the course of that time there was a  lot of mediums and spiritualists they swore   that they could help you communicate with  the people that you loved on the other side   and when houdini started to go to these places he  started to realize that they weren't being legit   that the things that they were using were  basically tricks or magic tricks that he knew   very well and so that infuriated that people were  lying to him that he was communicating with his   mother and being a spiritual man all my life  i always felt that we we had this connection   to the other side and then of course of  realizing playing houdini that there was a lot of   falsities it made me a non-believer i was a  non-believer because harry was a non-believer it was october 7th 1998 in austin texas at the  austin film festival they wanted to premiere down   there because houdini had performed at the theater  when it was the majestic it is now the paramount   i went down there they flew me down  there they flew my co-star stacy   edwards down there and the director of  pen denture and it was a very big night we're all sitting in the theaters i'm very  nervous and the movie starts to play the movie   opens up with a seance and the seance was from his  wife trying to contact harry on the other side see   because harry before he had passed away he said  to his wife if anyone is able to get through that   veil of death and communicate i will be that one  houdini had performed at the theater uh when it   was the majestic it is now the paramount i went  down there they flew me down there they flew   my co-star stacy edwards down there and the  director pen dentum it was a very big night the movie starts to play the movie opens up with  a seance and the seance was from his wife trying   to contact harry on the other side see because  harry before he had passed away he said to his   wife if anyone is able to get through that veil  of death and communicate i will be that one and then all of a sudden the film stopped just like died and there's  murmurs around the crowd and everything   and i saw my director get up and  he goes to the back of the theater   and i'm waiting worried that you know people  aren't going to like the movie because it's been   stopped and if there's a problem we  won't get to actually see the movie and then the movie starts back up  and comes walking back and sits down three minutes into it when uh stacy  edwards character best starts to   try to contact harry on the other side it stops again and then everyone in the  theater started to get a little weirded out   it just was a little weird i couldn't stand it anymore and  i walked to the balcony area   and as i was walking the  movie started back up again and i found myself walking through the curtains  and it was a very very dark area and no one was   in this certain area but there were seats there  and i remember sitting down and then it got very cold it was almost like the  temperature dropped in a certain area   and i felt like someone had walked into  this area that i was in and sat down   because i heard someone  sitting in the seat behind me and i remember getting a feeling a strange feeling   that the hair stood on the back of  my neck i turned to see who it was   no one was there no one was sitting in that  seat and that really got me that got me but then when the movie stopped for  a third time i got out of my seat   and i went to the back let's see if there's  anything that i possibly could do to help   then as i moved closer towards where the  projectionist was there was two individuals   that were working on the projector at the  time and they were getting it to go on and   you could hear the engine start back up but  they could never get it fully to come back   on it was like flickering the light was like  flickering on and off and i saw this other man   there there was a lot of things going  on with the projector going on and off he had glasses on he didn't smile at me or look at me when i actually got in the room to ask him if  everything was going to be okay what's going on   up here he told me that he didn't think anything  was wrong with the projector and he had no idea   why it kept stopping and then i asked him about  the other individual that was there helping him   out you know whether his assistant that had  fixed anything or you know if this was going   to be a continuing problem throughout the rest of  the evening when i said that he kind of smiled at   me like whether i was serious not there's nobody  up here just me i'm the only one who works here that's when i knew i had seen  something that i was meant to see houdini was making his presence  known he was he was basically being   a gremlin on the film and making  sure that it wasn't seen properly everyone had known that harry houdini  had performed in this theater before   but because of what we're watching on the  screen about the seance and bringing him back   this possibility that harry was haunting  us that evening was really bothering me it's pretty obvious that something happened that  evening that was uh personally out of the ordinary   that this was one way for me to realize that  there really is a connection to the other side   harry had reached out to me  during the course of that   screening to to let me know  that i i should believe   to make me believe again and not  just believe that there's ghosts   in this world but that there's a spirit of  understanding between the living and the dead that part of me allowed this experience  to happen and actually made me   believe that there are spirits and  that they can make themselves known you
