From an iconic redheaded teen to a master vampire-playing man with serious karate skills, here are some celebrity movie stars that went broke: 13. Lindsay Lohan This star became a household name when she was just a child in the 1998 film Parent Trap. Lohan gained even more popularity as a young woman in movies like Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, in which she played the iconic Cady Heron. She’s had many ups and downs throughout her career, many of which involve substance use and alcohol. But, some of her hardships have been financial. Her net worth as of 2018 was only $800,000, which is surprising considering that Lohan has earned over $20 million from acting alone. She also tried to dive into the music industry briefly with her debut album Speak. But, the tremendous amounts of cash didn’t last Lindsay for very long due to her outlandish spending habits. From designer clothes and handbags to cars and clubbing, Lindsay Lohan was spending a considerable amount of money nearly every night. Her addictions were costly as well. The numerous times she got in trouble with the law also ended up costing her a pretty penny. In 2010, she reportedly had just $100,000. 12. Corey Haim This actor was famous for playing in movies like License to Drive and The Lost Boys. However, Corey Haim’s life wasn’t easy, which seems to be the case for many childhood stars. His friend, Corey Feldman, wrote details in his memoir of the physical harm Haim faced during his young years in Hollywood. Despite his personal struggles, Corey’s friends, ex-girlfriends, and family members always noted that he was a great person. His ex-fiance, Holly Fields, once said that she remembered a day that he spent signing things for fans “even though he was completely broke at the time” and how he used the money to bring toys and dog bones to an animal shelter in southern California. Other people recall Haim’s good nature as well. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2010, and his family had to ask for donations to pay for the actor’s funeral. Although it might surprise that he had no money at the time of his passing, much of his finances were spent on substances to support his habit. Plus, he had filed for bankruptcy back in 1997 since he wasn’t making money from his starring roles or straight-to-video movies. Reports from that filing note that he had just $7,500. 11. Jodie Sweetin This actress is most well-known for playing Stephanie Tanner on the television series Full House and Fuller House. But, like so many others out there, this celeb had some rough patches throughout her life. From struggling with substances to entering various rehab facilities, Sweeten has battled many issues during her career. She began consuming alcohol at the young age of fourteen, and things only escalated from there. But, nowadays, she is fully recovered and even has a degree as a counselor for people who deal with similar problems. In 2014, Sweetin also had financial problems as well because she’d failed to pay the IRS back in 2009. Her debt totaled over $53,000. Fortunately for Jodie, she managed to gather enough funds to get the government off her back. 10. Gary Busey Gary Busey, now 74, was once at the top of his game after starring alongside Jeff Bridges and Clint Eastwood in 1974’s Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. Busey is also known for The Buddy Holly Story, Barbarosa, Lethal Weapon, and Point Break. He was even nominated for an Oscar for his work in The Buddy Holly Story. Despite acting in over seventy films, participating in reality shows like Celebrity Apprentice, and doing various advertisements, Busey went bankrupt in 2012. He was over half a million dollars in debt and had just $50,000 to his name. Gary owed money to lawyers, the IRS, the UCLA Medical Center, a storage company, Wells Fargo bank, and numerous other places. Many of his hospital bills were most likely the result of his near-fatal motorcycle accident in 1988 and tumor-removal surgery in 1997. 9. Nicole Eggert This beach babe made a name for herself as Summer Quinn in Baywatch from 1992 to 1996. She also acted in films like The Haunting of Morella and Blown Away. But, the money she made from her early acting career was gone when 2013 rolled around. She was forced to file bankruptcy due to declining finances. In 2015, she had to sell her house, which was worth a total of $1.15 million, because she still owed $805,000 on the mortgage. Besides monetary struggles, Eggert also accused Scott Baio, her co-star from Charles In Charge, of harassing her from the time she was fourteen. She was also engaged to Corey Haim, who we mentioned earlier, and spent numerous nights in the emergency room when he was dealing with substance addiction. 8. Brendan Fraser Brendan James Fraser is most well-known for playing Rick O’Connell in The Mummy film series. Other films Fraser starred in are Crash, Inkheart, and Stand Off. According to his IMDb profile, he’s won eight awards and been nominated eleven times. However, people lost sight of him after he seemed to vanish from the Hollywood spotlight, which might have been due to his personal life. After meeting an actress named Afton Smith in 1993 at Winona Ryder’s house, they dated for five years before tying the knot. After having three sons together and selling their Beverly Hills home, they got divorced in 2009. This left Fraser heartbroken and broke. His annual child support payment was $900,000… can you say “yikes!”? He petitioned the courts to reduce his payments because he claimed he couldn’t afford that amount. At the time, TMZ reported that Fraser was making about $205,000 a month. But, after paying various bills and child support, Fox News noted that he was losing over $87,000 every month, and Fraser’s net worth was at around $25 million. 7. Willie Aames This actor is well-recognized from television series like Eight is Enough and Charles in Charge. Since then, Aames has mostly worked on made-for-TV movies. He is also a screenwriter, director, and producer. But, despite his initial success, Aames has struggled with some serious issues in his personal life. He has been married three times - to Vicki Weatherman, Maylo McCaslin, and his present wife, Winnie Hung. Aames has two children from his first two wives. Plus, he’s dealt with alcohol dependency for several years. In 2017, he spoke with Studio 10 about the hardships he faced. Aames said he went from “eating at the White House to sleeping in the bushes” after making poor decisions. He noted that he only had himself to blame and decided to get his life back together at the age of forty-seven. After hitting rock bottom and becoming homeless, Aames learned how to install satellites and started working on a cruise ship. He began at the lowest spot and worked his way up to becoming the cruise director. His now-wife, Winnie Hung, had been writing to Aames for thirty years before the two met up while he was working on the cruise ship. 6. Gary Coleman Gary Coleman became famous while he was playing Arnold Jackson in Diff’rent Strokes. He quickly became the show’s most popular character… and even those who never saw the series have heard his catchphrase, “What’chu talkin’ ‘bout, Willis?” Coleman earned a whopping $100,000 per episode when he was at his highest and went on to star in various films like On the Right Track and Jimmy the Kid. After his career as a childhood star ended, Coleman even ran for governor of California in 2003. Arnold Schwarzenegger ran at the same time, and Coleman gave the former bodybuilder and actor his vote. He wound up in eighth place with over 14,000 votes. But, this actor’s life hasn’t all been rainbows and butterflies. Coleman attempted to end his life twice before 1993. He also faced financial hardships in 1999 when he filed for bankruptcy. Coleman lost about $200,000 on an arcade he opened, and he had to sell many of his personal items to pay for various things, including medical bills. He eventually married Shannon Price in 2008, but they called it quits a year later. Evidence came to light that Price had mistreated Coleman in many ways during and after their marriage. Unfortunately, Coleman’s life was ultimately cut short. He passed away in 2010 after dealing with lifelong medical problems. 5. Wesley Snipes As an actor, producer, director, author, and martial artist, there isn’t much Wesley Snipes can’t do. He’s starred in various action movies, like Demolition Man, The Recall, and New Jack City, as well as comedies, including White Men Can’t Jump alongside Woody Harrelson. Snipes even played the vampire title character in the Blade film series. It seems the one thing Wesley has trouble doing is paying his taxes. In 2006, he was charged with conspiring to defraud the US, making a false claim, and failing to file his taxes. He had even tried to file a false claim for $4 million ten years prior and $7.3 million in 1997. Snipes tried to pull himself out of the hole he dug by claiming he wasn’t a United States resident… however, he’s been a citizen since birth. In 2008, Snipes received a three-year prison sentence, which he began serving in December 2010. He was released in April 2013. But, he ended up losing $23.5 million to the IRS despite his attempt to compromise with less than four percent of what he owed. 4. Pamela Anderson Pamela Anderson is the iconic blonde bombshell that men and women have sought after ever since her 1990 Playboy cover photo. After gaining success as a model, Anderson became a household name playing C.J. Parker in Baywatch. She is also recognized for her roles in Home Improvement, Barb Wire, Superhero Movie, and Scooby-Doo. But, Anderson has had some rough patches as well, including the leak of her intimate tape with former-husband Tommy Lee. However, some of her troubles have been financial. She owed the IRS almost $500,000 in 2010. A year before, TMZ noted she’d been given a lien for $1.7 million. Pamela’s debt kept adding up, and she owed an addition $370,000 in 2012. 3. Burt Reynolds Another famous actor who faced some monetary difficulties in his life was Burt Reynolds. He got his start in the television series Riverboat, from 1959 to 1961. In 1962, Reynolds got the part of Quint Asper in the show Gunsmoke. He acted in the series for three years and said later on that it was the happiest time of his life. Reynolds eventually got a part in the movie Deliverance, which was his breakout role on the silver screen. He also posed nearly nude for Cosmopolitan magazine in 1972. A year later, he starred in White Lightning. Then, in 1977, he starred in Smokey and the Bandit, which became a big hit, grossing over $126 million in North America. However, his career went downhill after he turned down the leading role in Terms of Endearment, and after it went to Jack Nicholson instead, he won an Oscar for the part. After struggling as a character actor for several years in various films, he portrayed a director in 1997’s Boogie Nights, jump-starting his career again. One of Reynolds’ last movies was The Last Movie Star in 2017 before he passed in September 2018. But, afterward, people began wondering whether this famous man was broke during his final days. He auctioned off almost all of his belongings in 2014 and would’ve lost his mansion in Florida had his neighbor not purchased it. Although the details about Reynolds’ financial situation aren’t known, it’s apparent that he was struggling with both money and personal stress. 2. Stephen Baldwin This Baldwin brother started out in the 1988 film The Beast. But, his breakthrough role came in 1995 in the movie The Usual Suspects. Stephen Baldwin went on to participate in various reality shows, like Celebrity Apprentice and I’m a Celebrity… Get Me out of Here!. He married his wife in 1990, and their two daughters, Hailey and Alaia, are models. However, his seemingly profitable career didn’t help him when he was charged with failing to file taxes from 2008 to 2010. Baldwin was sentenced to either pay $300,000 in a single year or serve five years of probation and five years to pay off what he owed. He also failed to pay his mortgage for six years, totaling about $1.1 million. He struggled with financial problems for many years and even had to auction off his home in 2017. According to The Blast, Baldwin paid off almost all of his tax debt before his daughter married Justin Bieber. 1. Nicolas Cage This Academy Award winning actor is well-recognized for his roles in movies like Next, Leaving Las Vegas, and Face/Off. He’s also known for the 2007 film Ghost Rider, and National Treasure is his second-highest-grossing movie. Some of Cage’s more recent roles were in Mandy and Looking Glass, and he voiced Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. In 2002, Cage came out with his first work as a director, Sonny, a film starring James Franco. At one point in his life, this celeb was one of the highest-paid actors in the world, making $40 million in 2009 alone. But, like many other stars we mentioned previously, he got in trouble with the IRS in 2009 after they realized he’d failed to pay $6.2 million worth of income taxes in 2007. The IRS also discovered that he owed over $350,000 from the years 2002 to 2004. Cage attempted to sue his business manager, blaming him for his debt. However, the manager said it was Cage’s extremely expensive shopping habits that resulted in his financial problems, including several homes worth millions of dollars. He had once had about $150 million, but as of May 2017, Cage was worth $25 million and was accepting as many roles as possible to pay his debts.
