sanctuary above him stood seraphs each one with six wings and they cried out one to another in this way holy holy holy is the lord of hosts his glory fills the whole earth the foundations of the threshold shook with the voice of the one who cried out and the temple was filled with smoke i said what a wretched state i'm in i am lost for i am a man of unclean lips and i live among a people of unclean lips and my eyes have looked at the king the lord of hosts then one of the series flew to me holding in his hand a live coal which he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs with this he touched my mouth and said see now this has touched your lips your sin is taken away your iniquity is purged then i heard the voice of the lord saying whom shall i send who will be our messenger i answered here i am send me the word of the lord [Music] before the angels i will bless you [Music] [Music] i thank you lord with all my heart you have heard the words of my mouth before the angels i will bless you i will adore me for your holy temple [Music] i thank you for your faithfulness and love which accelerate you on the day i caught you answered you increase the strength of my soul [Music] [Music] king shall thank you when they hear the words of your move they shall sing of the lord's ways [Music] [Music] you stretch out your hand and save me your hundred all things for me your love for lord is eternal discard not the work of your heart [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers i want to remind you of the gospel i preached to you the gospel that you received and in which you are firmly established because the gospel will save you only if you keep believing exactly what i preached to you believing anything else will not lead to anything well then in the first place i taught you what i had been taught myself namely that christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures that he was buried and he was raised to life on the third day in accordance with the scriptures that he appeared first to kephas and secondly to the twelve nexi appeared to more than 500 of the brothers at the same time most of whom are still alive though some have died then he appeared to james and then to all the apostles last of all he appeared to me too it was as though i was born when no one expected it i am the least of the apostles in fact since i persecuted the church of god i hardly deserve the name apostle but by god's grace that is what i am and the grace that he gave me has not been fruitless on the contrary i or rather the grace of god that is with me have worked harder than any of the others but what matters is that i preach what they preach and this is what you all believed the word of the lord thanks be to god let us stand to welcome the gospel [Music] [Music] oh [Music] the lord be with you [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you [Music] jesus was standing one day by the lake of genesis with the crowd pressing around him listening to the word of god when he caught sight of two boats closed the bank the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets he got into one of the boats it was simon's and asked him to put out a litter from the shore then he sat down and tore the crowds from the boat when he had finished speaking he said to simon put out into deep water and pay out your nets for a catch master simon replied we worked hard all night long and caught nothing but if you say so i will pay out the nets and when done these they netted such a huge number of fish that the nets began to tear so they signal to the companions in the other boats who come and help them when these came they fill the two boats to sinking point when simon peter saw this he fell at the knees of jesus saying leave me lord i am a sinful man for he and all his companions were completely overcome by the cash they had made so also were james and john sons of zebedee who were simon's partners jesus said to simon do not be afraid from now on it is men you will catch them bringing their boats back to land they left everything and followed him the gospel of the lord jesus christ [Music] my dear brothers and sisters in christ all of us who have been called by the lord to be his prophet his leader to be an apostle is certainly a great privilege and that should humble us when we served others indeed anyone who is called to serve the king or the president or wholesome public office it is a great honor but this honor is bestowness not because we're the most intelligent with the most qualified very often in the call of being the lord's prophets and messengers it is truly the work of grace that is why no leader should ever think of himself as if he is so great so worthy to be an apostle a prophet of our lord the truth he said none of us will ever be able to lift to the expectations of how our lord has lived his own life we will fall short of living a christ-like life in whatever we do and yet today the scripture readings are very consoling because god does not choose perfect people to serve him or to be his ambassadors to church to society always chooses those who are weak and imperfect to show forth his glory his power and his grace and this is the case in all the three scripture readings which we have read this morning when we read of the vocation calling of isaiah of paul and of peter in the first reading from prophet isaiah isaiah was most likely a priest in the temple and he was offering worship day after day isaiah is a symbol of all of us ordinary catholics we go through our catholic life in a routine manner week after week we might attend mass event we might even be involved in church activities we can be singing in a choir we can be a warden a community minister and yet our life is just a routine which we do day after day week after week but there is no real change in our lives it has become a habit that we adopt and so isaiah had to be shaken out of his tube and the lord appeared to isaiah in a powerful vision that is suitable and tailored for his own mental representation of god because god is pure spirit he cannot be sin but what we can be certain of isaiah had a powerful experience of the transcendence and the holiness of god and so much so that he fell down and he exclaimed what the wretched state i am i am lost by a man of unclean lips and my eyes have looked at the king the lord of hosts it was a very immense experience for isaiah he could sense his sinfulness before him before that he was living a normal life like most of us we do not know how sinful we are because we compare ourselves to mr tan mr go next door but when we compare ourselves to holy people to our lord we are very far but most of us we are numb to our sins we think we have most catholics don't think they have sinned we have no sin hardly any small small sins we are all quite okay we don't feel the urge to change our lives but when isaiah saw the lord he felt totally unworthy and sinful this was a case of isaiah then we have the case of saint paul he also had a conversion experience simple is a symbol of those who have misguided zeal simple was a pharisee a teacher of the law and he was furious that some of his jews were becoming christians and so he went around persecuting them putting them into prison torturing them because he felt he was doing the work of god and that is true for many of us as well we have so many misguided good people they are not bad they're good sincere people but misguided they are fighting for example for the transgender for the lgbtq all for the game movement for abortion for the right to n1 lives for removal of death penalty some are very particular about church doctrines morality liturgy how must be observed we all have our own passion in itself it is not wrong those who have what we call this desire to put things right but again very often we are a bit narrow-minded myopic we've we don't see the whole picture and we become obsessed with just a particular area of life and there was a case of soul before he was converted but when saul met the lord he saw things in perspective when the lord appeared to saul he was enlightened he was awakened he came to realize that what he thought was the work of god was not his work after all it was his own passion it did not come from god because he saw god from a very narrow perspective of judaism fidelity to the laws alone and so when the lord appeared to him and let him know that he was persecuting him and he is present in the church the body of christians he repented that itself my dear brothers and sisters that was his conversion experience he was changed totally then we have in today's gospel we have the conversion of saint peter saint peter he was a fisherman all his life and he is a symbol of the agnostic a symbol of those of us who are arrogant who thinks we know everything who thinks that we can do everything by ourselves we do not need god we can depend on achievements our own talents we are smart and arrogant and saint peter we are told into this gospel he was out at sea and they caught no fish and the lord told peter pay out into deep waters and pay out your nets poor catch saint peter was a little bit annoyed what can a carpenter teach him how to fish jesus should be minding his own business and jesus was telling him how to fish and it was perhaps out of arrogance he said if you say so i put on the net i will prove you wrong there will be no fish and he did it and when he had a wonders catched he and his friends were overwhelmed that the carpenter knows how to fish better than them and this is why when simon peter encountered this miracle he fell at the knees of jesus and said leave me lord i'm a sinful man in other words i've been a proud man i thought i knew everything but you have proven me wrong my dear brothers and sisters you notice that in all of these religious experience encounter every encounter is unique but there are some characteristics that are common to all these experiences this is a sense of being overwhelmed in men's joy of being liberated or being enlightened that is why when people experience god we cannot put into words no matter how much we try people will not understand us unless they have gone through similar experiences they can only listen but they cannot share experience most of the time when we encounter such experience we say it's awesome it is life changing but clearly my dear brothers and sisters how then do you know that you have a real religious experience a conversion the first thing is a recognition of one's sinfulness and accepting receiving god's forgiveness many of us we are very angry bearing love for grudges we are always fighting with people always finding thoughts with everyone the real problem is with ourselves because we are seeing people with a very very hit hurtful eyes but when we realize our own sinfulness our own imperfections then and when we encounter god's mercy for us you know the more we realize our sinfulness the more we encounter god's mercy and forgiveness and when we know that god has forgiven us then we say to ourselves who am i to judge others who am i not to forgive that is a definite sign of a real encounter with god this humility of being loved and being forgiven and the next one is being sent out you notice all the three uh characters into the scripture readings they encounter god's mercy and forgiveness and then they asked the lord i'm ready here i am send me that's what the prophet isaiah to the lord saint paul himself he made it very clear that because of this encounter he he was so grateful to god so grateful he said since i persecuted the church of god i hardly deserve the name apostle but by god's grace that is what i am and this grace he has given me has not been fruitless he became a great apostle because gratitude gratitude and we have seen peter who left everything and followed jesus and become a fisher of men so how do you know that you have a real god experience when your whole perspective of life has changed when your priorities have changed when you begin to realize what are the most essential things of life and you forget they know live alone all those non-essentials don't have to spend too much time don't fight over those non-essential things when we are focused then we want to preach the gospel of love of mercy and that is what uh um all these prophets messengers of god they all experience that and so my dear brothers and sisters today simple is telling us please do not receive the grace of god in vain god has blessed us with so many graces and then if we have been chosen let us be humble let us be forgiving and let us be patient with people who are slow who are weak we are not here to condemn everybody we are here to enrich people to be life-giving and to give courage to all those people who come into our life and all the more we must work harder as simple tells us cooperating with god's grace at the end of the day what is the message of today's scripture reading the triumph of grace over sin the triumph of grace over human limitations that grace is what perfects us amen let us profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen the faithful god our father sent his only son jesus christ into the world to call us to follow him we ask the lord for the grace to respond to his call in our daily lives more faithfully like peter in today's gospel and let our response be lord hear our prayer lord hear our prayer for our pope francis our archbishop william and all our priests and religious that they continue to confidently proclaim the word of god and spread christ's message of mercy especially to the poor the weak and the oppressed let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all who are discerning god's call to the priesthood or religious life that they be attentive and sincere in their search for god's will and with god's grace respond wholeheartedly let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for all who feel unworthy before god because of guilt that their hearts be more fully open to the unconditional mercy of our loving god who longs to draw them into communion with him let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for christians who take their faith for granted and have grown lukewarm in their calling that inspired by the example of saint peter they return to serving the lord in a spirit of renewed hope let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all the participants in the beijing winter olympic games that they celebrate the athletic gifts god has given them and promote a spirit of respect and understanding within our one human family let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our community of worship that each of us embrace the humility of the prophet isaiah and saint peter and acknowledge how much we need god's grace in our lives let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we also pray for our own intentions we pray to the lord prayer father your son jesus christ challenged us to believe examples of his presence in the world but we can mean this challenge only with your help send your holy spirit to give us the courage to launch into the deep waters of the world with your message and not be afraid we make this prayer through christ our lord amen let us pray the we use the resources that the lord has blessed us with because at the end of the day we are accountable to god to our fellowmen how we use what the lord has blessed us we are called to share and deepen our faith do you have faith in god's providence do you believe that god will bless you when you bless others god cannot be outdone in generosity catholic foundation is here to invite catholics
