Catholic Sunday Mass for August 8 2021 with Father Dave from Alaska

in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you with your spirit hello everybody out there thank you for saying yes to keeping sunday holy hopefully this is working uh don't hopefully this uploads you guys can check out the mass um this is the first day i arrived so hello to everybody from skagway alaska super tired here so forgive me for being tired um as we try to put this mask together um but this is saint teresa's in skyway alaska some of you have been here you know when you go on vacation if you bring god with you or you stop in a catholic church wherever you are in the world one it always feels like home whenever you're you know where the tabernacle is where the blessed sacrament is you know two you get more out of that vacation when you bring god with you right you when you have fun with someone man you get so much more out of life and you have fun with folks and when you bring when you plan to include god on your vacation great things happen to find out more about that you have to stay tuned for the homily but just to say briefly this picture behind me this is a painting of that famous picture in skagway where the gold rushers were coming going the chocolate trail and going up over the pass to find gold and of course you know the gold in that mountain wasn't the gold you could dig up in the field it's the gold of our lord right you have found him and that's why you've clipped on this mask because he's drawing you closer to him for the times we've resisted for the times we've chosen sin let's ask the lord to forgive us come back to him now at this mass lord jesus you are the son of god and son of mary lord have mercy christ jesus you are the center of the holy spirit christ have mercy lord jesus you are the way to the father lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king oh god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one you alone of the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen let us pray almighty ever living god whom taught by the holy spirit we dare to call our father bring we pray to perfection in our hearts the spirit of adoption as your sons and daughters that we may merit to enter into the inheritance which you have promised through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever a reading from the first book of kings elijah went on a day's journey into the desert until he came to a broom tree and sat beneath him he prayed for death saying this is enough oh lord take my life for i am no better than my father's he lay down and fell asleep under the burning tree then an angel touched him and ordered him to get up indeed elijah looked and there on his head was a hearth cake and a jug of water after he ate he lay down again but the angel of the lord came back a second time touched him and ordered get up and eat else the journey will be too long for you he got up ate and drank then strengthened by the food he walked 40 days and forty nights into the mountain of god horrid lord the word of the lord thanks be to god taste and see the goodness of the lord taste and see the goodness of the lord i will bless the lord at all times his praise shall be ever in my mouth let my soul glory in the god the lo the lowly will hear me and be glad taste and see the goodness of the lord glorify the lord with me let us extroll his name i sought the lord and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears taste and see the goodness of the lord look to him that that you may be radiant with joy and your faces may not blush with shame when the afflicted man called out the lord heard and from his dispropress disgrace he saved me taste and see the goodness of the lord the angel of the lord encamps around those who fear him and delivers them taste and see how good the lord is blessed the man who who takes refuge in him taste and see the goodness of the lord a reading from the letter of saint paul in the ephesians brothers and sisters do not grieve the holy spirit of god with which you are sealed for the day of redemption bareness fury anger shouting and reviling must be removed from you along with medicines and be kind to one another compassion forgive one another as god has forgiven you in christ so be imitators of god as beloved children you in and live in love as christ loved us and handed himself a verb for us a sacrificial offering for the fragrant aroma the word of the lord thanks be to god the living bread that came down from heaven says the lord whoever eats this bread will live forever hallelujah hallelujah the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to john glory to you o lord the jews murmured about jesus because he said i am the bread that came down from heaven and they said is this not jesus the son of joseph do we not know his father and mother then how can he say i have come down from heaven jesus answered and said to them stop murmuring among yourselves no one can come to me unless the father who sent me draw him and i will raise him on the last day it is written in the prophets they shall all be taught by god everyone who listens to my father and learns from him comes to me not that anyone has seen the father except the one who is from god he has seen the father amen amen i say to you whoever believes has eternal life i am the bread of life your ancestors ate the manna in the desert but they died this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die i am the living bread that came down from heaven whoever eats this bread will live forever and the bread that i will give is my flesh for the life of the world the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ so behind me again this is a picture of the gold rush right although i've been coming here for 13 years and they haven't moved very much so i wouldn't say they're rushing maybe they're french russian you'll get it later right so uh father dave i this is super tired father dave so forgive me i kind of stumble over my words when i'm just tired but i've been traveling a good long time so let's just cut to the chase here not that they're chasing anyone all right so why are they seeking gold because it's valuable right they're seeking gold because it's valuable and what do these guys hope to do with that gold and its value right so we know some of them are going to get drunk some of them are going to gamble it away some of them are going to either go to confession after whatever they do with it right but a bunch of them probably wanted to help their families right help their kids pay for some operations maybe if their kids need or schooling you know what would you do if you found gold and now i they're they're mining for gold up here but i think they're just pulling out like um dust and stuff like that i don't know i don't know i think they're pulling out dust but that dust is valuable and it comes down to that again valley so you know i love that phrase you rock right if you found rocks of gold right what'd you do with that well when you come to christ and i always think whenever i see this painting i always think like jesus he's the gold in these mountains when you come to god what does he do he turns you into gold right better than finding gold on the ground you can pick up and it can someone can steal or you can drop or lose or gamble away is if you become gold itself i don't mean the element i mean something a lot more you know elementary right what do i mean father dave when you come to god right one you come into god if you have him in your life then you can help other people right in ways that you couldn't if you didn't have god right literally the psalm would that psalm say right when the afflicted man called out the lord heard from all his distress he saved them and that's that's true that was true for even me getting here today i was back in juneau and fogg and rolled in and they canceled flights it was like i don't even know 100 and something people online at the alaska airlines counter all upset because they canceled flights because there's fog for those of you who have ever been up here or live up here you know how tough it is right super foggy well i'm doing the readings for the mass and this is a saturday and the reading for mass saturday so yesterday for everyone watching this on sunday jesus says you have the faith the sight of a mustard seed you will say to that mountain move and it'll move and jesus tells us in the gospel before you can come to him the father is drawing you right so no one can come to jesus unless you've been drawn which means like even now for this mass if you're watching this it means because god has called you to him which is pretty awesome that you're you're responding to him so anyway so i'm sitting there uh right in front of the airport and i hear the announcement all these flights are cancelled jesus says you say to the mountain move well i don't want the mountains to move i love mountains i'm from jersey i'm from the flat land we have the ocean we don't have mountains i love the mountains i love them up here so i didn't need the mountains to move i need to fog them so what did i do one i was being invited by the father to an act of faith and i was doing the readings on my phone i looked up and i looked at that fog and i said move and what happened my flight was 11 15. come 11 45 fog cleared and i was able to come to skagway right there we started to send flights out of juno and all these people and you know got canceled making other hotel plans well things changed uh my little flight there was uh five of us and the pilot we all got here and how did those people get here because god moved the fog why did he move the father because you prayed father dave while he was inviting me to pray and so one if you have god in your life and jesus in your life what happens you'll be a better strength for other people around you and you'll be transformed to help them how so you know the prayer saint francis what does it say where there is darkness let me bring light where there is sadness joy right where there is despair hope and imagine you you know you got a bunch of people that are despairing broken down what's what are some gold nuggets gonna do for them that's not gonna give him lasting happiness but you can well how can you do that when you come to him he transforms you to transform them you know i'm thinking in my head two things i'm thinking of a couple back my parish back in jersey i bring this up to my wedding couples you know i i got an early call to give someone last rights when i was just new to the parish of saint martha's and i go to this house and this guy he's sleeping in the living room and his wife is in a hospital bed and she has dementia for the past couple days or weeks maybe i want to say it was like actually like three weeks she was soiling herself and so he's cleaning her right she doesn't know who he is sometimes she's giving him you know sometimes it's a tough time because she doesn't know who he is and she's giving him some trouble and he's just trying to help her and he loves him and i say to me i said to this guy i said man how do you do that and he says i love her father dave and what he didn't have the theology to say was the reality of his marriage because he got the sacrament of marriage and in the sacrament of marriage what happened in the sacrament of marriage not just the civil marriage but in the sacrament god transformed him and their love he blessed it raised it to be the kind of love you see on that cross right where god is pouring himself out and saint paul talks about that right he becomes a living sacrifice this husband was giving up himself to care for his bride he became gold for her and when she died and got to heaven she's not bound by the weakness of her body and more in the weakness of her mind right jesus in heaven his wounds aren't bleeding right and so she when she got to heaven she didn't have dementia anymore and she saw the clear mind all that he ever did for her especially there at the end he found something much more valuable than rocks on the ground when he found jesus he found the light of the world who be who made him a life for his bride and she was made better for that and her family was edified by that and that's what happens right god gives you the strength to stand by your husband and wife you're they're better because you come to christ right people always say like oh i don't go to church because you see how people act when they leave the parking lot and i say man you know what whatever i said you know if they didn't go to church they'd be worse it'd be worse when god is drawing you to him it's not because he wants to take life from you it's not because he wants to like make your life miserable he wants to help you and he knows that if he helps you then your people are helped as well if he can turn you into gold and everyone gets a little more golden so seek him find him and bring him to others i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things remain for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen let's raise our prayers to almighty god we pray for the pope the bishops of the church pastors our religious men and women and they always lead us to seek christ may they show christ to us in their words and actions and follow his teachings themselves we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for the people of this parish of saint teresa and skyway alaska and the people of saint martha's back in jersey and the people of your parishes all around the country and around the world may god bless all of them and bring us all together in faith and hope and love one day in his paradise in heaven we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for anyone who is traveling by land by sea or by air may they arrive safely at their destinations may they journey with jesus we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for anyone who needs hope anyone who is in despair anyone who is in sadness or darkness anyone who needs forgiveness may god send them hell may send that help through you we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray a blessing upon all the holy souls in purgatory may they come to heaven we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer i pray for anyone who may be sick suffering especially from covenant in the new variants may god deliver them from that illness and restore them to the full health and may protect your town you protect this town we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for anyone who is hungry or who needs food especially we pray uh here in uh skagway the the food market here um well there's one food store in town and they have a real uh lack of food right now because the distributor that sends food up they had with 500 employees and i think they're down to 30 is what they said because they had an outbreak of cove and so i mean all those men and women they become healed if they get well and may god feed the hungry we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray a blessing upon farmers wherever they are if they're in kansas or all around the world may god bless them and their crops that they may continue to feed the hungry we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for an end to abortion and pray for healing for anyone who may be suffering from that we pray that the lord lord hear our prayer let's pause our intentions now in silence we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray a blessing down upon our country's men and women who serve in the military may they be kept safe we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer almighty father turn toward us and hear the prayers you inspire us to ask we ask them in faith through christ our lord blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you through the earth and work of human hands will become for us the bread of life blessed be god forever himself to share in our humanity blessed are you lord god of all creation through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands will become our spiritual drink blessed be god forever pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours will be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and the glory of his name for our good and the good of all is holy church be pleased the lord to accept the offerings of your church for in your mercy you have given them to be offered and by your power you transform them into the mystery of our salvation through christ our lord amen the lord be with you lift up your hearts with them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty eternal god for you so loved the world and in your mercy you sent us the redeemer to live like us in all things but sin so you might love in us which you loved in your son but whose obedience we have been restored to those gifts of yours that by sinning we had lost in disobedience and so lord with all the angels and saints we too give you thanks as an exaltation we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you're indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfalls that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith when we eat this bread and drink this cover we proclaim your death o lord until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ will be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and david our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god a blessed joseph her spouse the blessed apostles saint therese say martha and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him god almighty father the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever amen at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we will be always free from sin and safe from all distresses we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom of the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not in our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her watched us throughout the pandemic and this past you know of this past year and a half thank you for anybody uh who had hit a thumbs up that was really awesome i want to say a little bit of a kind of the church power washed like those big gun things so these are some really great people that love the church uh love their faith and love the town here so if you want to find out a little more about these guys in their own youtube channel where would they go uh the name is called alaskan bass right now we are planning to change it we don't know and we're planning on doing some more contact time content content on there so yeah what kind of content would you do like gaming content gaming what kind of games would you like like minecraft robot all those types have you built a my little pony castle no i've never built my little pony castle so you guys have a youtube channel and what do you do interviews we do like interviews and we also we also have like um some how to make some sort of stuff like lance you know we come here a lot of the time and sit over there and make them oh and there's a very funny thing of me when i was little around there yeah anything else that they should know uh yeah yeah um they're just gonna have to find out yeah subscribe to this channel and ours too hey so again uh thank you to uh henry and thank you to millie um they would love to get a hundred people who subscribe to their youtube channel they have a really great interview uh where they're interviewing howard and they're asking you know what's it like to have the mention what's it like to live with someone who has to mention then they share their own thoughts on that having a grandpa who they absolutely love who at times has uh some memory issues so it's an issue that a lot of families are struggling with and it's it's it's hard it's hard on the person it's hard on the family and they certainly don't need our prayers everyone does uh we've seen that in my own family right so the good news is in heaven thanks be to god right in heaven you know jesus in the resurrection his wounds aren't bleeding anymore right so in heaven man the people that have had alzheimer's and dementia well they don't have it there right in heaven the mystics say the christian mystics to say in heaven everyone is like 33 why am i pulling my hair because i was really excited that when i was 33 i still had my hair that's why it's long now because my family the guys go bald right so i was like all right i have it you know have my hair at 33 but and why 33 because jesus died and rose at 33 right but in heaven man you know the resurrection people that have had memory issues they will see clearly all that you've done for them they will know with a full clear mind all the ways that you sacrifice for them and how hard that was you know for you they're gonna see all that and love you for it right and for all the tough times that they didn't understand now they'll understand that right so that's really great news so keep fighting a good fight keep becoming gold to aid them and one day that goal will be paid back to you especially you know in heaven uh so one of the cool things i i think would be kind of cool to do here so you heard about them talk about mile zero which is a bed and breakfast that's literally like right there um so if you're driving you know you're looking for a place to vacation or stay like a great bed and breakfast bam stay at mile zero you can try to put their link down below i think maybe next week too if you're interested in like taking a cool little tour if you're coming in on a cruise ship and then you want to like you know go to the top go to the summit go to the top of the mountain and come back from mass or the other way go to mass and then go up to the mountain or you want to see the beautiful northern parts of you know alaska or southeastern alaska and parts of canada there's a great couple um who run a tour and they're both catholic and they do they're a huge part of our parish here you'd be having an awesome tour and supporting some local catholics although they're not perfect because they're green bay packer fans to find out more about really learn on the airplane i'm trying to make make a segue into a joke i don't have one um so what happens when you don't pay your exorcist right because priests we get a very tiny salary i'm not an exorcist i imagine they get a bigger salary what happens if you don't pay your exorcist you get repossessed all right the lord be with you may almighty god bless you the father and the son and the
