Sunday Catholic Mass for November 13 2022 with Father Dave

in the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit the Lord be with you hello everybody thank you for saying yes I'm going to keep Sunday holy and we are at is this the penultimate Sunday of the year the second to the last I don't know we're getting close to the end I think it is I think it is Diane thinks it is we're without Jess Jess is sick at the time we're filming filming this so it's Diana and I and although you don't know we started filming this match late because we've solved the world's political problems we were talking about his friends for like the past hour so uh the sun is in a different position you notice here but we want the Son of God to shine on us and so he does that whenever we tell them we're sorry whenever we want to be open to what he's offering so let's do that now cultivine our Lord Lord Jesus you are the Son of God and Son of Mary Lord have mercy Christ Jesus you are the center of the Holy Spirit Christ have mercy Lord Jesus you are the way about to happen he answered see that you not be deceived for many will come in my name saying I am he and the time has come do not follow them when you hear of wars and insurrections do not be terrified for such things must happen first but it will not immediately be the end then he said to them Nations will rise against nation and Kingdom against Kingdom there will be powerful earthquakes famines and plagues from place to place and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky but for all this happens however they will seize you and persecute you they will hand you over to synagogues prisons they will have you led before Kings and governors because of my name it will lead to your giving testimony remember you are not to prepare your defense beforehand for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist the refute you'll even be handed over by parents Brothers relatives and Friends and they will put some of you to occasionally people said some funny things they send some like Far Side Comics or you know something funny because I like to laugh and you know that anyway so someone sent this actually this is Reggie everybody if you could pray for Reggie and thank Reggie out there in Pittsburgh unfortunately he's a Steelers fan he's having a tough year but he sends us out our way this was something that was published in a church bulletin and it said if you can Dear Sir madam if you can start the day without caffeine right there I'm already out if you can get going without pet pills if you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles if you can eat the same food every night and be grateful for it if you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you time if you can Overlook it when something goes wrong through no fault of your own and those you love take it out on you say that again if you could Overlook it when something goes wrong that's not your fault and your loved ones take it out on you if you can take criticism and blame without resentment if you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend if you can face the world without lies or deceit regret or worry if you can conquer tension without medical help if you can relax without alcohol you could sleep without the aid of drugs if you can say honestly the deep in your heart you have no prejudice against anyone regardless of what they believe or how they look or whatever their politics if you can do that then my friend you're almost as good as your dog I thought that that is bless you Reggie right dogs are the best and like I know the cat people are like man my cat's the best your cat is the best the Internet Was Made apparently for cats but dogs are great and like people will say adult God is dog spelled backwards or dog is Gospel backwards right yes dogs are fabulous and you know the Saints will give their take on the spiritual life of course they will and we learn from them and there's all these different steps to the spiritual life right people will write Saint Teresa of Avila will write about like the seven mansions and people make their nine First Fridays and you have 12 steps of humidity humility maybe not humidity in Jersey we have 12 stubs humidity and humid right now this tonight I'm filming this right um but there's really only one step to Holiness one right people are asking what is the one step the Holiness people inside Jesus the one step to holiness is the step you take now right now it's the present moment the present step and dogs part of why they're able to do all this is dogs are you think God God is like hitting his head like I may give humans intelligence do you think they would get this dogs live in the present moment do dogs have any regret over what they did in the past yes or no not at all they're interested in what you were eating right now they don't care what you ate yesterday they don't care what you said yesterday they care what you're saying to them right now the smell in front of them right now so many people beat themselves up over stuff in the past can you any of you out there can you change your past yes or no you can't do anything with it can you do anything for tomorrow like if you could do things for tomorrow can you control what happens tomorrow do you even know what will happen tomorrow you have an idea what will happen tomorrow right are the Vikings going to beat Buffalo nobody knows right and people spend there so much of the of the present moment like beating themselves up over the past God knows he didn't make you with the ability to control the past Saint Paul says I you know I look forward right and and rise up to almighty God he passes behind you whatever and like whatever your past has been in the spiritual good Catholic thinking right even if you're like past was like a steaming mess of a hot mess of an HBO steaming pile of sin guess what if you're alive right now you have this moment you can go forward and just trust your path to God and tell him trustingly and lovely Lord I give that to you leave it in his hands you can't do anything about it anyway so why beat yourself up today over whatever happened yesterday all you can do is have this moment so love God at this moment and so many people then worry about the future right so Saint Teresa Saint Therese writes about this she's like because people suffer pains happen right change through Sanctuary is the Little Flower she writes and I love her you guys know that she writes no one can suffer pain for 10 years you'll get this into Despair and be crippled and that's absolutely the case like but she keeps going and she says all you can do is suffer today but in today in today's present suffering whatever that is God gives you the strength at this hour to bear that cross right and like what she's talking about is like the idea of suffering is heavier than the actual suffering itself right people I remember when I was you know my doctors called me a couple years ago and they're like Father Dave you need to come in immediately you have Lyme disease you have it really bad we need to start treatment and and like I felt small and Afraid and scared and I came like right to the church to pray and I was like then like mentally like crippled where I was like fearful because of how bad it was it affected my brain and verbal memory and I was thinking like oh my gosh I'm gonna be I'm gonna die with my heart and and I would just like was like like Frozen with the fears of what would happen that was six years ago [Applause] it happened I mean like it was tough and there was tough days and and you know and all that jazz and it wasn't easy but at every moment God gave me the grace and some of that was taking medicine and some of that was offering up my pain and all that are you any anyone out there you get a diagnosis of cancer and you will have the same experience and you can waste so much of the moment worrying about what will happen that you don't see what is happening what is happening is God is present now your past only God can deal with that so give it to him right if you did something terribly wrong whatever that is tell God you're sorry mean it and then trust that he forgives you well I have to go to confession you know what you will go to confession when God presents that option right you got to be open to that like if you go to the supermarket and you see a priest there and he's trying to buy some Doritos you know say hey father could you hear my confession because there's a reason that God has that priest buying Doritos right at that moment and you see him and you need to go to confession right but if you tell God you're sorry Patrick writes about this he says pray trust and don't worry say your act of contrition mean it and then go forward because you can't do anything about the past so I beat yourself up with it and so many people live with regrets about what they did or what they didn't do like I mean the Minnesota Vikings Kirk cousin right this year he's doing so he's his stats are down but he's playing better why because in the past he would like himself he'd throw an interception or make a stupid pass and he still does those things but in the past he would sit on the sideline and kind of beat himself up over what he failed to do that he was failing play in the present play in front of them to help the team win and now he's winning who knows what people are actually mentioning it's crazy they mentioned the word Vikings and Super Bowl right will that happen the future why waste time in the present missing like thinking about the future who knows what the future will contain so many people are also worried they're not they're like beating themselves over the past they're worried about the future again like you get a disease a diagnosis people get so scared so I love one in your family you know God forbid well he has Alzheimer's or he's told they have Alzheimer's or dementia or something like that and you get that diagnosis and then everyone's like what are we going to do you got right now and yeah some of today's responsibilities to prepare for tomorrow but not the whole day because you have today right uh psychologists would say you know what you do is you spend a set of a set time every day or once a week to talk about the future and the disease and then between like 10 and 11 if I heard a psychologist who worked at a nursing home said this he said every day between 10 and 11 you tell the families to talk about Alzheimer's and then once 11 o'clock comes they don't talk about it anymore and when people bring it up and worry well then you say oh we're going to talk about that tomorrow between 10 and 11. and you put parameters on your worry about tomorrow and you only give tomorrow the prep you need to do today but otherwise you have this moment that sounds like good advice Jesus is not giving us particularly that advice he's telling us to pray for your daily bread to be present right now and what he says here there's all these terrible things are going to happen what does Jesus say he says do not worry remember you are not to prepare your defense ahead of time for I myself will give you wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries have been powerless to resist to refute your dog knows you're going to love it and feed it and pick it up and put it in the car and pet her and kiss her and put her under the covers when it's cold out and make sure her feet are okay when she's walking on the rock salt outside and the air conditioning will be colder than you like for your dog likes it comes like your dog knows you're gonna love your dog don't you think God loves you more than you love your dog or cat yes Father Dave yes I mean kids when Jesus says it's like be like a child a child trusts it's mom and dad is going to take care of him or her and moms and dads and grandparents like when kids go to Grandma's house they know there's going to be cookies grandma has to make the cookies the kid doesn't even worry about that there's gonna be cookies it's Grandma's house there are cookies when you become a grandma you have the toll house key Burrell to move into your place right Jesus wants you and me to live today with him now love God with all your heart right now trusting your future to him right now this is the way of a pilgrim and this is in my head because as the parish I'm I'm recording this on a Friday night because my parish is going down with our diocese to the National Shrine in Washington DC we're going on pilgrimage right we're and Catholics like are terrible on pilgrimage American Catholics like they tend to to kneel in a church they say their prayers they say a rosary and then they go to the gift shop that's not what it means to be a pilgrim it needs to be a pilgrimage to get on the path in front of you and they walk with Jesus right then and not to worry are you going to have enough water will you be attacked by robbers or wild dogs will you like have enough food are you is your leg is your knee gonna make it pilgrims don't worry about any of that a pilgrim learns and part of the part why it's good to go on pilgrimage and I I did the Camino into Spain with when I was at Princeton it was wonderful it's great to do these ancient Pilgrim routes but a pilgrim knows you live this step with God and if there's people walking next to you who are like transient people then you love them if there's a bunch of hippies then there you are with a bunch of hippies and if they're Green Bay Packer fans you lift them up because they're having a terrible season but that means other people are having a good season right like you live this moment with business right the good thief on the cross right went wrong his whole life that's not the end of the story he has still breath in him and so he reaches out to Jesus at that moment and what does Jesus say right he says Jesus he says to Jesus Remember me when you come into your kingdom what does Jesus say today you don't say tomorrow today you will be with me in Paradise today is what we have right so like for people that are beating themselves up over sins and and you know abortion or whatever you did or failed to do tell God you're sorry and that you love them and give that to him in his hands and if he arranges it so that you happen to stop in a church you're driving you feel like a call to go into a church and you go in and they're hearing confession to go to confession show an act of humility let God arrange for that but then trust them don't beat yourself up move forward with him right now because we need you in the game he needs you in the game and for people that are worried what's going to happen tomorrow we have to move or how are we going to pay for this or people the politics people are going crazy these people are getting elected these people are not getting elected these people are are in this wearing red and these people wearing blue and you can spend so much time worrying about that can you do anything about for America here can you do anything about the politics in America if you're a politician you can otherwise you got today love God today love your neighbor today be present where you are Saint Therese a little flower again what did she say she says oh Jesus I have but today to love you now so love Jesus now today I believe in one God the Father Almighty maker of heaven and Earth of all things visible and invisible I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ the only begotten Son of God born of the father before all ages God from God light from light true God from true God begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our Salvation he came down from heaven and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end I believe in the Holy Spirit the Lord The Giver of Life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets I believe in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic church I confess one baptism for the Forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come let's raise our prayers to almighty God for the church may God's love guide us as we proclaim the gospel truth let us pray to the Lord r Lord hear our prayer for elected officials May the Holy Spirit Empower them in their efforts to protect the dignity and sanctity of all human life let us pray to the Lord r Lord hear our prayer for all who are facing adversity or burden of any kind May the glory of Jesus calm their fears and bring them peace let us pray to the Lord r Lord hear our prayer for Children and Youth in our faith community may the Holy Spirit fill their hearts with joyful love of the Lord let us pray to the Lord r Lord hear our prayer for all who have died May the Lord God welcome them to his dwelling place where they may offer him continuous praise let us pray to the Lord r our prayer for the end to coronavirus let us pray to the Lord r Lord hear our prayer for peace in the world let us pray to the Lord Lord hear our prayer and now for those petitions we hold in the Silence of our hearts let us pray to the Lord Lord hear our prayer pray for our parishioners and our online community who may be suffering from national natural disasters for those in Florida those experiencing the blizzards and for our parishioners online in South Africa as well as India for all of them we pray to the Lord Lord hear our prayer for the holy souls in purgatory May our loved ones who have died and those who have been in purgatory a long time and they come into heaven through the intercession of all of our Blessed Mother and our prayers and God's goodness we pray to the Lord Lord hear our prayer Almighty father turn toward us and hear the prayers you inspire us to ask we ask them as your disciples through Christ Our Lord blessed are you Lord God of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands and we come for us the bread of life blessed be God forever Lord by the mystery of this water and wine that we come to share in the Divinity of Christ who humble themselves to share in our Humanity blessed are you Lord God of all creation for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands become our spiritual drink blessed be God forever so right there you saw father Dave who washed his hands and why did I do that and we've talked about this in the past it's not about Santa you know having sanitary hands it's symbolic action and I bring it up because in the temple when the high priest once a year would enter the holy of holies he would have to do a ritual washing before he would enter the holy holies with the presence of God was believed to dwell right and so we still do that as we're entering this holiest part of the mass where Almighty God's going to give us his presence in the Blessed Sacrament but Jesus talks about the fall of the temple and we're filling this Mass I don't know that I'll say this in the homilies I want to put it in here too right the temple for the Jews represented all of creation and so it represented the world and God was going to dwell with his people and they had this veil in the temple that they had all the consolations on this tree it wasn't just like a curtain that separated the holy of holies they had all the stars on it from all the constellations and they thought that it represented the heavens and behind it was the hidden heaven or the spiritual world which is interesting because when Jesus dies on the cross what happened to the Veil it's torn in two from the top to the bottom that there's no longer a division between Heaven and Earth between God and us when almighty God pays our debt and he does it by offering up his body and blood on the cross pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours and be acceptable to God the almighty father may the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and the glory of his name for our good of all his holy church Grant the Lord we pray that what we offer in the sight of your majesty May obtain for us the grace of being devoted to you and Grant us the prize of everlasting happiness Christ Our Lord amen the Lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts and lift them up to the Lord let us give thanks to the Lord Our God it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our Salvation always and everywhere we give you thanks father Most Holy through your beloved Son Jesus Christ your word through whom you made all things whom you sent as our savior and Redeemer America right if you go to the bank what do they give you so dying shaking her head not much to give you are they interested in you they give you interest [Applause] Ed not so much they're too expensive care with lollipops at least they used to right different I don't know like um you go to the dentist don't they give you like a little goodie bag of like toothpaste travel toothpaste right other places like businesses sometimes give you stuff so what do you get when you go to the urologist peanuts if you don't get it ask your brother he'll tell you what that means right thank you everybody for for praying online for keeping Sunday whole even when you're sick when you're traveling you know when you can't get to church for mobility issues for some reason banks are still keeping Sunday holy God sees all that we do and nothing can stop your love of him unless you choose to stop it right so never stop keep loving him wherever you are let him lift you up we'll see you guys next
