foreign [Music] [Laughter] oh [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen greetings beloved of the lord and welcome you are listening to catholic meditation with me father blessed today is sunday the 13th of february 2000 2022 it is the sith sunday in ordinary time church yes c good morning and thanks for joining us [Music] let us pray o god who teach us that you abide in hearts that are just and true grant that we may be so fashioned by your grace as to become a dwelling pleasing to you through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen the first reading is taken from the prophet jeremiah chapter 17 verses 5 to 8. thus says the lord cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his arm whose heart tends away from the lord he is like a shrub in the desert and shall not see any good come he shall dwell in the patched places of the wilderness in an uninhabited salt land blessed is the man who trusts in the lord whose trust is the lord he is like a tree planted by water that sends out its roots by the stream and does not fear when heat comes for its leaves remain green and is not anxious in the year of drought for it does not cease to bear fruit the word of the lord thanks be to god the responsorial psalm is taken from psalm 1 the response to the psalm is blessed the man who has placed his trust in the lord [Music] who has blessed his trust [Music] most times in the past with sinners no abides in the company of schoolness but whose delight is the lord of the lord and who called us his lord the second reading is taken from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians chapter 15 verse 12 and verses 16 to 20. brethren if christ is preached as raised from the dead how can some of you see that there is no resurrection of the dead for if the dead are not raised then christ has not been raised if christ has not been raised your faith is futile and you are still in your sins then those also who have fallen asleep in christ have perished if for this life only we have hoped in christ we are all of all men most to be pitied but in fact christ has been raised from the dead the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep the word of the lord thanks be to god gospel acclamation [Music] rejoice and leap for joy says the lord for behold your reward is great in heaven [Music] hallelujah [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke chapter 6 verse 17 and verses 20 to 26. at that time jesus came down with the twelve and stood on a level place with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all judea and jerusalem and the seacoast of taya and sidon who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases and he lifted up his eyes on his disciples and said blessed are you poor for yours is the kingdom of god blessed are you that hunger now for you shall be satisfied blessed are you that weep now for you shall laugh blessed are you when men hates you and when they exclude you and revile you and cast out your name as evil on account of the son of man rejoice in that day and live for joy for behold your reward is great in heaven for so their fathers did to the prophets but woe to you that are rich for you have received your consolation woe to you that are full now for you shall hunger woe to you that love now for you shall moan and weep woe to you when all men speak well of you forsooth your fathers did to the false prophets the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ the theme for today's meditation is choose wisely to be genuinely happy choose wisely to be genuinely happy beloved of god on this sixth sunday of the church year the church exalts us to choose the path and the way of life that is best for us and that would earn for us the so much desired happiness we are after we all want to be happy god knows we want to be happy he himself desires happiness for us and when we are happy he too is happy because happiness is what he wants for us in fact god made us for happiness unfortunately the choices we make in our quest for happiness are the wrong ones and rather than make us happy they rather leave us very sad and disappointed at the end and we take responsibility for our choices so you had better choose wisely on our path to happiness the choices we make are very essential and are key therefore what do we choose and how do we choose this is the center of today's readings do we choose wisely or do we choose driven by mere emotions influence from others excitement poor judgment or driven by the fancy of the externals the first reading of today provides two ways for the search of happiness putting one's trust in human beings or putting one's trust in god which of the two do you think can give you true and lasting happiness of course the reading tells us those who trust in god for those who put their trust in god are like mount zion that cannot be shaken psalm 125 verse 1. they are like a tree planted by the side of a river jeremiah chapter 17 verse 7 they blossom and they shine out and bear fruit for god never fails so those who put their trust in him will never fail but placing your trust in humans you will be disappointed and you will be unhappy because humans feel placing trust in human beings is like a tree planted in the desert have you ever looked up to someone as an ideal or an institution and they failed you you can crush because you placed your trust in human beings and in human institutions the psalm of today someone says blessed that is happy is the man who has placed his trust in the lord do you want to be happy then place your trust in the lord choose between placing your trust in humans or placing your trust in god but remember those who place their trust in god will never be disappointed they will truly be happy the gospel also gives us two ways those who are the truly happy people and those who are the unhappy people which do you choose happiness then do what it takes to be happy in the gospel jesus gives the beatitudes meaning the blessedness of the happiness who are the happy people jesus explains the happy people of the blessed people are those who are poor in spirit poverty of spirit means these people are humble and think less of themselves they trust entirely in god not in themselves they know their need for god they know if they will have anything it comes from god not from humans in fact some friends have added to this same blessed are those who do not hope they will never be disappointed if you place your trust in god beloved then you are poor in spirit you are a truly happy person you are a blessed person happy people blessed people are those who stand for the truth now although they will be persecuted but their great reward awaits them in heaven happy people blessed people are those who choose the path of justice and peace those who stand for the gospel values ironically those who wield power and use their power to suppress others those who deny justice to others the warmongers they think they are happy but the gospel says woe to them they are unhappy that explains why despite all the money and power they never get satisfied that is their punishment from the devil they keep gathering they keep amassing searching and holding yet they never get satisfied truly as jesus says place your trust in god and you will find true and lasting happiness in the second reading we also find this choice happy people are those who accept christ and the doctrine of the resurrection unhappy people deny the resurrection and sin paul says how can you deny christ how can you deny the doctrine of the resurrection and you think you will be happy let us believe in christ believe in the doctrine of the resurrection you will find true and lasting happiness dear friends in christ let us ask ourselves today how do you choose what do you choose do you choose those things that will give you happiness or do you choose those things that are only external the advice therefore is that we should choose wisely and make choices that will lead us to genuine happiness the work you choose do you just choose the work as a last resort many now get into professions as a last resort not because those things they do gives them genuine happiness that accounts for the reason why we find many people who just work for the sake of having a function they do not apply themselves wholeheartedly to their work because the work does not give them happiness what about choosing a life partner do you choose wisely or are you driven by the externals money beauty and that explains why though many are married yet there are some who are unhappy choosing a vocation do you choose that vocation because it gives you happiness it is not going to be all smooth beloved jesus tells us in the gospel the choices we make especially for him will bring lots of difficulties but a choice motivated by god not externals gives us genuine happiness we will be persecuted we will find difficulties we will find hardships there will be moments of sorrow loneliness and despair but a choice motivated by god will always give us happiness let us pray today and always beloved that in the choices we make we may always seek god god is the only person who can give us genuine happiness and when we make those choices it doesn't mean it will be all smooth ask those who have been married for over 50 years they will tell you they have had their own fair share of troubles in the work you do you may not find it all smooth but dear friends let us place our trust in god and not in human beings or human institutions for those who place their trust in god will truly be happy and will find genuine and lasting happiness oh dear god give us the happiness that we so much desire amen we wish each and every one of you a wonderful sunday the lord be with you may the blessing of almighty god the father and the son and the holy spirit come down on you and remain with you forever [Applause] oh [Music] oh [Music]
