this has been from the be a photographer channel and in this video I'm gonna go through how I import organize and edit my images in capture one Pro 20 so for this example I'm gonna be using sessions in capture one Pro and I'm gonna create that session on my external hard drive and show you how I keep those organized between my various drives and I'm gonna be importing the photos from my SD card in my camera now when I import I do it through two different ways and I'll walk you through both but for now I'm gonna plug in my hard drive plug in my memory card to the memory card reader and we'll get started you can see my nikon d750 SD card here and my external hard drive is plugged in what I'm gonna do is hit capture one pro xx and hit new session from here if you don't see this window you can also just hit file a new session on top and then I'm gonna create a session called skatepark in Venice and I'm gonna make sure to place this on my actual hard drive so the location is where the files physically get saved so I'm gonna change this from my pictures drive to the external hard drive and hit choose so now when I hit OK it's gonna open up a new session and we'll see it pop open right here of course there's no images in it yet so what we can do is use the import button up top and then select our source as the nikon d750 memory card and what's nice is you get an image preview you can change the metadata as you import it and you can scroll through and see all the image previews now here's the thing if your images are on a memory card that has a bunch of files like this one here this is just three different shoots it might be a little bit cumbersome to import through this method so my favorite method actually is to right-click on the capture folder hit show in finder and then I can double click on the capture folder here I'll hold command and tap at nikon d750 and now I can use finder to import files so for instance I'm going to go to the bottom of the skatepark photos so I see that the wedding shoot starts right here so I'm gonna grab all the skating photos just by holding shift and then dragging to select all those images drag them to the capture folder and this is going to do two things one it gonna move the images from my memory card to the external drive directly into the capture folder and to it automatically puts them into capture one pro and you can see now as the images load I'm able to preview them and start editing so I'm going to give this a second so it can import all those files and you can tell that it's done when this move dialog is complete it finished the import and I can check to see how many images by hitting command a here on the side you can see these images plus 155 more so everything's there and to deselect I can hit command a shift a and now it D selected all the images okay so my next step to keep everything organized is renaming all the files the reason I do this even though it's a session and it's purely for this one photo shoot is sometimes after a while I'll import my session into a larger catalog and I want to have the keywords and filenames so if for instance I want to see my skateboarding photos from Venice I could easily find them to do this I'm gonna hit command a and under help do batch rename so if you just type batch batch rename shows up you could also just go to image batch rename but I love using the help menu because it's quick and I usually have mine set to job name and then two digit counter or you could do three digit counter so we'll call this Venice skateboarder and you can see it'll do Venice skateboarder 0 8 5 and it'll just start at whatever number you put it so that's an example there and I'm gonna do spaces between so Venice skateboarder has one word and then a space so that the number has another section or I could do underscore so I'm gonna hit rename and there we go now we have the files with the numbers and it stayed in the same format so now it's Venice skateboarder underscore and then the number okay so importing is done next we have to edit but before editing we have to choose which images we want to edit for instance this I probably hit the shutter by accident so I'm gonna hit delete these were just some photos we took for fun while we were messing around so I'm gonna delete this one and then I'm going to go through my images one by one and select what I want so firstly I'm gonna go through and just use the Delete key on my keyboard to delete any images I know for sure I'm not going to be used sometimes in the middle of going through all my images what I'll do is just test edit one for instance I think this shot could be cool if the exposure could be brought up to save it and I'm just really quick with it I usually hit the magic tab to see exactly what happens with the exposure we do have some data here but I'm not a huge fan of the lighting so I'm gonna delete it but it's good to know that if there was an image that was this bright I could bring it up to this level and then also save the highlights in the back okay so here's the first image that I'm really a big fan of and what I'm gonna do is use the number keys on my keyboard to select it as a 5-star image you can see now in the right side five stars showed up under this shot and to do that you literally just hit the corresponding number key on your keyboard so one four one star two three four five I do the fives as my top images like if I were to lose all my files the fives are the ones I for sure would be upset that I lost and so I usually go through and select the fives and that way when I go to edit later on I can be really quick with knowing exactly which files I want to work on when going through the files if you have two images that are kind of similar and you want to decide between them what you can do is hold the command key and then tap on the second image and you'll have that file show up you can even do three or four or five images altogether the limit is twelve images so you can compare twelve files at the same time which is really nice and handy and now what I can do is go to my library tab here and select the five star images so under session albums I can get five stars and now I can see my favorite shots when we look through on the right side you can see I picked a handful here and really I just have maybe one or two favorites one from the evening time and then definitely this top shot right here so I'm gonna edit it and export and basically the same process is done for all the other images so again I import rename my files then choose my tops using the star rating system selecting my five star images and then I'm gonna go into the Edit so of course I start my edits the same way I've shown in the previous videos I will typically start with the exposure and white balance so I'll bring this exposure up just where I think the skater has the right amount of light on him you guys can see in this behind-the-scenes clip I actually used an explorer 600 strobe and triggered that with my nikon d750 so I had urban helping out on the shoot thank you to urban and Moya for coming out and we lit these skaters with a strobe midday so that way we could get the sunset behind them with a nice exposure on it what I'm gonna do I have my exposure boosted I'm gonna bring down the highlights so we can get a lot of detail back in the sky and I'm gonna bring my contrast up just a little bit so you can see already the before and after there we have a little bit of pop on the skater here and as we zoom in we can see that this photo it looks nice and sharp so that is good I'm gonna start there then I'm gonna have it auto adjust my levels for me so you can see just getting the levels gave me a little bit more of a dynamic range and if I want to double check the white balance I can just click the custom white balance tool here select white on his pants and now we have our white balance set to what is an exact white so this is a little bit of a blue or day I want it to look warm so I'm just manually gonna slide it over to the right give it more of a sunset type feel and there we go alright so the last thing I want to do to this image in terms of the editing is I want to add a little bit more depth to the actual ramp here so I'm gonna use a gradient mask and add more contrast and clarity to the bottom of the image and then what I'll do is crop in a little bit to get more detail on the skater so I'm gonna create a new empty layer I'm gonna call this skate ramps and I'm just gonna grab the gradient tool here hit M so I can see my mask and I'm gonna pull up from the bottom we can see so that way it'll just affect the ramp right here and what I can do is then bring in a little bit more clarity so you guys can see I'll just boost it to a hundred and you can see how that's affecting the bottom already so that we have the details on the ramp showing up and then if I want to bring the blocks down I could bring that down here just my contrast and now you can see the ramps off and the ramps on we have a lot more detail in it now I think it looks pretty good and then if I want to brighten the skater even more what I can do is create a new empty layer again call this one skater and I'm gonna grab a radial mask sure it said to draw masks inside and I'm going to select on him so right about there we can see the mask and now I can change how bright it's gonna be on his skin so I'm just gonna boost it up a little bit add more contrast yeah maybe a little bit lower and now we can see before and after just added a little bit more punch on the skater and now when I press the C key I can crop and to maintain the same aspect ratio I usually have my crop locked to the original ratio but let's say I want to do this one in widescreen so it looks a little bit more cinematic and kind of like a movie because movies are typically shot in widescreen 16 by 9 so I'm gonna do my crop right about here click H to confirm and now I have my final shot so there is the edit we did a layer mask on the skate ramp itself we did the layer mask on a skater you can see he's nice and sharp of course we lit him with a strobe the Explorer 600 at the Venice skate park and you can see there's the image before there's the image after so we got a lot more detail in it now and the last thing I'm gonna do is export so I'm gonna hit export in the top and I'm gonna just export it to my computer's desktop we can create a subfolder if we want so we can call this Venice skaters and then I'm gonna do the job name call this Venice skater and for Instagram I typically do 2048 pixels on the long edge so for scale you can do long edge here and then 300 pixels per inch is fine hit export one variant says exported to that folder on the desktop so now if I go to my desktop and I do my most recent folders I see Venice skaters see Venice skater and now I have the file done and it is complete but this is my main workflow this is how I recommend a lot of you guys start if you have any questions please leave them down in the comment below happy to answer and help out and please request tutorials so I can create more videos for you they don't have to be capture one specific it can be Photoshop actual photography color Theory color balancing coming up with photo ideas whatever you want to learn them out let me know in a comment below I'll be happy to help and I'll see in the next video thanks for subscribing
