what's up everybody welcome to canvas who is excited for tonight come on who is excited for tonight we are excited for what god's going to do in our hearts and minds and souls and we're just excited that he's gonna be in this place tonight i wanna just start with a few words i believe god wants to do something great in all of us tonight and there was a there was a word as we were practicing tonight and getting ready for tonight that just kind of came to my mind it was remember remember we're gonna do communion tonight but all the songs that we're singing has a just kind of a theme of remembering what jesus has done for us all remembering his grace remembering his love remembering his mercy remembering who he is in your life so as we sing tonight this is what i'm going to ask all of us [Music] we want to be a church that worships jesus amen and not just we don't want to just be in here as spectators but we want to be physically responding to what jesus is doing in this place so i'm going to ask all of you here tonight lift a hand lift a voice up take a moment in worship tonight to where you just pour out your heart to god this isn't a moment where we're we're gonna just kind of worship no this is a moment where we're going to go head deep we're going in strong and we're going to worship our jesus like never before amen come on everybody so let's give them all we got let's invite the holy spirit now let's pray together this one what does it want all of us to do i want to take 30 seconds i want each and every one of us i'm going to ask you to do something that might be a little bit uncomfortable for you i want you to lift your voice i want you to invite the holy spirit into this place i want you to invite him to come to have his way to work in us to do something new we do not want to be the same person that walked through these doors as we walk out tonight but we want the holy spirit to minister to move in our lives so let's pray come on everybody were hit in the wild west they were hitting banks left and right town after town what was fascinating about this is they faded into history without ever being caught no one could tell you who they were as a matter of fact they couldn't tell you how many of them there were except for this there was three of them that were inside the bank there was a tall skinny guy and two average sized guys what was unique is each one of them had an oddity about their appearance the tall man wore a pink and white bandana with polka dots across the front of his face one of the average guys had a huge mexican sombrero that he wore with gold flashing on the front of it and the third a giant intrinsic belt buckle now these robbers were pretty good they were pretty quick they were in and out of these banks and when the marshals would come in trying to figure out what had happened and who these guys were no one could give a description of these men except for one had a belt buckle that was really big one had a sombrero with some gold flashing on the front of it and the tall guy a bandana with pink and white polka dots all over it see what happened is people noticed the superficial details but they miss out on the significant details hair color eye color any features that they might have i think oftentimes this is like a relationship with god we know some things but we miss out on the significant things of god because there's not one characteristic or even name that can describe the greatness of god or the grace that god provides each of us now in scripture we have a glimpse into many things that we know about god and we see these in a lot of different ways we see them through metaphors we see them through miracles we see them through god's promises we see these things through god's judgment and one of my favorite ways that i see characteristics of god in scripture and one of the studies i love to do is the study of the names of god and tonight i want to give you a name of god that takes place in a story in genesis starts in genesis 15. this is an encounter that really would i mean it could read like the real housewives of genesis uh it would be gossip fodder for the magazines at the grocery store uh checkout lines uh the the information we'd find on a gossip app that lets us know what's going on in the world takes place in genesis 15 is where this story starts there's a man named abram and his wife sarai now later in scripture their names are changed to abraham and sarah but in this part of the story they're abram and sarai and god promises abram that he will have descendants that are as many as the stars are in the sky too many to count and because abram believed the lord it was credited to him as righteousness scripture tells us and if we move and fast forward to genesis 16 this is where we pick up in the story something happens here sarai abram's wife who's fully aware of what god has promised and the covenant he made with abram fully aware of that but she's not able to bear children so she decides to take things into her own hands much like a lot of us do when we're we're tired of waiting for what god wants to do so she brings her maidservant and says to her husband why don't you sleep with my maidservant and let's start the family through her now some of you think the bible is super boring this is taking place in the first book in chapter 15 16 17 18 19 and 20. this is just beginning so if you missed that story check that out because it's a good and fun one to read but sarai takes her egyptian maidservant hagar brings her to her husband they sleep together and hagar conceives a child so what happens next is pretty fascinating because hagar becomes a little bitter towards sarai and sarai becomes really upset with hagar and then blames it on abram now i could unpack that right now but we're going to move past that we'll do that another time because i'd take the whole night but what's fascinating is sir i had her own plans and hagar was a part of those plans and what happened is there was this feud that took place and so what does hagar do she flees she flees to the desert we have an egyptian maidservant who's pregnant that flees the house flees all security that she's ever had and she takes off [Music] she's all alone she's by herself she has no support system and this is what happens scripture says an angel of the lord found hagar near a spring now the the term angel of the lord there in scripture scholars would say that's a christophany it's a pre-incarnate appearance of jesus in the old testament and he says to her hagar servant of sarai where have you come from and where are you going and she responds i'm running away and then the angel of the lord told her go back to your mistress or the lady of the house and submit to her and then the angel added these words i will increase your descendants so that they will be too numerous to count isn't it fascinating that in the story the two people that have that line set to them one is a patriot guard of the bible that all of us pretty much know the story of abraham and we know what's going on there and then there's this maidservant egyptian maidservant not even would be considered a child of god in this certain setting because she's a slave and the angel says you will have so many descendants there's gonna be too many to count well let's pick up in chapter 16 verses 11 through 12. let me read you this next couple lines the angel of the lord also said to her you are now a child and you will have a son you shall name him ishmael for the lord has heard of your misery he will be a wild donkey of a man his hand will be against everyone in everyone's hand against him and he will live in hostility [Music] she gave the name to the lord who spoke to her you are the god who sees me for she said i have now seen the one who sees me in hebrew she gives the name to god elroy the god who sees me alone impoverished pregnant the worst circumstances for anybody to be alone with no support system and god finds her and this is what i love god knew the abuse of her past god pinpointed the precision of where she currently was the present if you will and he gives her a future and a plan that includes her in it and gives some direction for her life and i'll let you finish the story it goes through chapter 21. it's pretty fascinating but how does this relate to this you might find yourself in a desolate place you might find yourself all alone tonight you might find yourself in a place that is of discomfort and i'm here to tell you and challenge you to remember that the god that hagar saw is the same god that we're worshiping tonight same god the same god that sees us sees us in our deepest despair sees us in the throes of sin sees us when we are stuck in the mire and we don't think we can pull ourself out it's the same god and what's fascinating is later in chapter 21 sarah and abraham now their names have been changed they have a son named isaac and when isaac is born sarah sees ishmael as a threat to her son of her own bloodline and she sends hagar and ishmael out and again they flee and what's fascinating is the turmoil that takes place between isaac and ishmael in this story is still taking place in the world today it's the events that are taking place in israel and palestine and in the arab world it's these two bloodlines that have been fighting for centuries but this is interesting hager finds herself again fleeing in despair and suddenly a voice calls do not be afraid god has heard the boy crying lift him up and she opens her eyes and what is before her but a spring you see she had to be reminded of what god did 13 years earlier for her god was letting her know i still see you so i don't know where you're at tonight we've all been somewhere where we feel like we can't move forward and i'm here to tell you the god that we worship is a god of promises if he pulled you out of something in the past he will pull you out again tonight [Applause] it's one of the many names that we see of god that we can identify with in scripture el roi the god who sees me and he sees each and every one of us tonight and we're going to continue to to our time of worship and in just a couple moments here but i want to give us some application points as we worship what how we can respond to what we've heard tonight here's the deal he knows our situation he knows our name he knows our needs and he will meet us right here and we worship a gracious god you may have walked in here and you have a lot that you're carrying we worship of god of grace we worship a god that is full of strength and comfort and compassion in our darkest and loneliest place don't forget that if you're dark if you're lonely if you're in a place that that you feel like you need god to lift you up remember he sees you he sees us all and remember this god has a divine purpose for your life no matter what your background is there's only a couple times in scripture where we see names of god revealed and one of them is from an egyptian slave named hagar elroy there are no circumstances in our life that we can escape god's fatherly love that he has for each of us the care he has for each of us god knows us and he knows our trouble i'm going to pray with you if you'll stand with me i just want to remind us that there is a god who sees us every single one of us and tonight as we worship lean into that god dearly father we pray right now lord that for those that are in this room that are in that mire that are in that uh place of being stuck god that you would reveal yourself to them right now even in this moment as we worship and lean into you god may you reveal to us the things we need to give to you god if we are stuck if we're we're in a place lord where we need encouragement we need people around us god bring those people around us and god let us be reminded of the promises that you've given us that you are a god who sees us you know every hair on our head you know every situation we're walking into in every situation we've just walked out of but you meet us you have a plan for us and we lean into what you have for each of us in this place and i pray this in jesus name and everybody said amen come on cameras let's worship [Music] foreign [Music] you have been so so good foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] we're going to sing a song called build my life and it's a song that we just need to listen to the words we're going to take community here in a few moments and i want us to reflect on this side this song that we're singing what are you building your life upon who's your foundation think about that as we sing this next song and then in a few moments we're going to take communion together but we always want to reflect upon our own life before we remember what jesus christ has done for us so let's do that come on let's worship let's build our life upon jesus christ and his firm foundation [Music] come on sing it out he's worthy of every song worthy of every song we could ever sing worthy of all the praise we could ever bring [Music] worthy of every breath we could ever breathe we live for you [Music] come costing jesus and jesus the name above every other name yes he is jesus the only one you could ever and worthy of every breath we could ever breathe we live for you oh we live for you cause you're holy and holy there is no one like you there is none beside you open up my eyes in show me who you are and fill me with your heart and lead me in your love to those around me [Music] come on he's worthy so we lift up our brace to him [Music] worthy of every song we could ever see he's worthy of every breath we could ever breathe we live [Music] yes he is [Music] we live for [Music] there is [Music] [Music] with your heart and lead [Music] there is none beside [Music] who you are [Music] come on when we ask him to open up our eyes and wonder and we see the glory of all that he is and it fills our heart there is no other response that we can do but worship him with all that we have so come on let's sing this out that we will build our lives upon his love because he is that perfect and firm foundation come on let's see this out and i will build my life [Music] is um firm foundation and i will put my trust in you and i [Music] it is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] open up [Music] who you are [Music] there is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] is [Music] and i will not be shaken [Music] [Applause] can you imagine living this life without jesus can you imagine walking our everyday life the things that are happening around us without jesus within us i can't i remind my kids of that all the time you don't want to do this life alone you need your savior working in you all the time we remember church we remember his love we remember his mercy we remember the dedication that he had to walk the walk that he did and die on that cross for our sins if you would grab those communion elements if you would go ahead and open those up i'll give you a few seconds [Music] [Music] if you grab that piece of bread [Music] we pick up in first corinthians chapter 11. jesus is with his disciples and it says on the night that he was betrayed [Music] the lord jesus took some bread and he thanked god for it then he broke it into pieces saying this is my body which is given for you do this in remembrance of me just close our eyes think about what he did think about the love that he has for you the sacrifice that he made for you take a moment and just think about that and then i want you to pray just by yourself and i want you to thank the lord for what he did for you and then take that bread go ahead come on everybody [Music] now with a cup continues on to say in the same way he took the cup of wine after supper saying this cup is the new covenant between god and his people an agreement confirmed with my blood do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it you're grateful for that new covenant that we have with the father in heaven come on who is grateful come on let's pray together and thank jesus for the blood that he shed for us jesus we love you we are honored that you came to this earth with a purpose to redeem us to save us from our sins to save us from a horrible death but now lord we don't have to fear death because we know you [Music] jesus we thank you for the blood that covers our sins we thank you for the new covenant that you made with the father that gives us access to heaven [Music] and jesus we take this cup together [Music] tonight as we worship you as we remember what you are and who you are and what you've done we take this cup in remembrance of you jesus christ and the blood that you shed [Music] we just take a moment in his presence before we sing another song to sit in the presence of the holy spirit in this place let him speak to you for a moment [Music] [Music] is [Music] i believe our god is worthy of praising this place come on everybody come on let's lift our voices let's applaud him come on let's give him a shot of praise jesus you're worthy jesus you're worthy come on jesus reigns over everything every circumstance every situation around us we don't have to fear we don't have to worry because he is in control come on let's sing this out everybody [Music] the rain of darkness now has ended in the kingdom of light in the kingdom of light [Music] forever under your dominion you're the king of my life you're the king of my life come on let's sing this together you rain above it all you wait above it all over the universe and over every heart there is no higher name jesus you reign above it all [Music] on the cross tonight come on we serve a victorious king therefore we are victorious as well that's what i want us to leave with tonight church we've remembered what he's done we remember who he is and remember
