welcome back to where's wisman we're Emily and Matt and in today's video we are camping in Grand in central Washington at Steamboat Rock State Park and we have a fun surprise in the store this is part two of a longer camping trip and we're picking up right where we left off if you want to watch that video we'll make sure to link it at the end [Music] all right breakfast in getting ready to head out we stopped at uh Sunlake state park near Banks Lake this is actually a pretty cool spot beautiful scenery we'll stop at the top of the hill here and take a look anyway we're good to go packed up let's hit the road hit Banks Lake Steamboat Rock Grand let's do it we didn't get very far down the road before coming upon the Viewpoint overlooking Dry Falls where we had to stop and take in a spectacular scenery as the name suggests Dry Falls was once an enormous waterfall at 3 and 1/2 M long and 350 ft High Dry Falls would dwarf Niagara Falls during the last ice age an ice dam blocked the Clark Fork River in Idaho creating an enormous Lake backing into Montana called glacial Lake Missoula over time this ice dam repeatedly failed sending billions of tons of water racing across central Washington stripping away the soil and rock these floods carved steep walled Canyons called coolies including Frenchman which we camped out recently and the largest of them all Grand Grand is up to 800 ft deep and more than 1 M wide in some places Dry Falls is located at the head of the lower section and Banks Lake where we're headed to next fills the upper section [Music] [Music] [Music] all right campus set up we'll give you a little tour this is going to look a lot different than where we usually can't because we're at a state park but we are here because we're surprising my parents we've actually reserved the site right next to theirs they aren't here yet so this is going to be a fun surprise but in the meantime we'll show you how we have things set up not too many trees as you can see this is pretty much it we've got a nice picnic table cool fire pit hey but everything's nice and level so that's a win right yeah a little bit different than last night uh quite different than last night we've got some bathrooms right there so that's super handy there is Steamboat Rock right along Banks Lake and we've got the galley open and this site over here is where my parents will be so we're just hanging out and then I think we might go do a hike we can hike to the top of Steamboat Rock so I'll see what we can get into this afternoon okay here they come we don't know if they've seen us yet don't know if they've seen us yet my mom is shocked that was a great face that was the look of surprise all right here we go we're doing it making our approach to the base of Steamboat Rock it's supposed to be pretty short hike but it's just straight up oh oh that is that a turkey what the fck is that think that's a wild turkey turkey what do you think yeah I just worry coming down yeah because of my knees and my ankles um spoiler we didn't hike to the Top Trail was a little sketchy for my liking uh I'm thirsty [Music] welcome back to Camp cocktails it has been a while since we've done this we know you guys love it so we're bringing it back keeping it going and uh we have been enjoying our whiskey we were thinking about doing a whiskey drink maybe in Manhattan but uh We've really been enjoying our Scotch lately so we're going to do a Rob Roy which is just a Manhattan with Scotch whiskey so for this drink we have Glenn Banji 10year sweet vermouth orange BS this is just what we had available uh typically you'll want to use angera BS and some uh marcino cherries you have to have the Cherry all right we're going to get started with some ice thank you camp refrigerator for keeping our Ice Frozen for 2 days now fantastic all right so starting out 2 oz of scotch [Music] 3/4 an ounce of sweet [Music] remou it's about all right this recipe calls for three dashes of bits I'm just going to go one two we are uh not too big on the bits but just like a little bit in there get that stirred up we're going to do 37 stirs just kidding just stir [Music] it nailed it ooh that's [Music] [Music] tasty what is going on out here uh I think it wants to hail on us or snow I think it was just it looks like there's snowflakes coming down this is crazy yeah it is raining snowing sing hailing all around us right now except for right there hopefully that comes back but Fire's still going going in for some shelter well it has been a great trip so far we've been spending a lot of time just hanging out with my parents so we're not showing a lot of that on camera had a delicious ribeye for dinner and uh ran into the motor home a couple times when the weather changed and had a little bit of a hail session for 5 minutes um but yeah beautiful night a little bit windy a little bit chilly but we've got a great fire going it's been a good day [Music] it's about 6:45 in the morning couldn't leave Steamboat Rock without climbing Steamboat Rock try to get it Done Quick think I can be up and down an hour but we'll see mile and a half 800 ft of elevation gain had four pieces of pepperoni and a cheese stick got plenty of water though so I'm going to put this camera down for now and book it [Applause] Up Up and Away man oh man feel like I'm getting close to the top here it's only been uh 30 minutes from the campsite so yeah this hike isn't bad at all little bit of a rock scramble easy going up I imagine it's going to be a little slick going down but we'll see for now up to the top at the junction I got to decide go left or go right which view do I want first well I haven't looked North yet so I'm going that way [Applause] first well something's been marking this rock like crazy they turds everywhere these cat turds you guys see lots of uh deer tracks on the trail little deer tracks no cats yet man that was a that was a lot of doooo oh yeah there's the trailer right down there looks like the gle's open think Emily's making breakfast I better haul ass [Applause] wow the uh geology here is amazing this state park is amazing you got to come see it and it's all made possible by your local Missoula floods established a zillion fraking years ago [Applause] that's uh that's as steep not bad though I expected well it is steep I expected it to be a lot looser but there's some pretty good uh Rock steps here makes it really easy coming down well not really easy just take your time mind your ankles watch your step be down in 5 minutes eating breakfast hopefully all right final time up and down in an hour and a half but I was booking it and I didn't do the entire Loop had to get back I would say give yourself 3 to 4 hours if you want to go to a nice comfortable pace and just enjoy every view where's breakfast I had a visitor we were chatting so uh just kidding I'm a little behind on the breakfast that's all right I'm a little behind too how are you feeling how was it oh was amazing great yeah the Steep part is like stairstep rock so you going take a shower you filthy animal yeah do the dishes while I'm in there that's the only soap we have so and the one time I didn't bring a ton of I always overpack clothes and I'm out of clothes so whatever all right see you in a bit probably ready [Music] pretty amazing State Park here I do highly recommend if you're going to do the hike do an early morning hike try to catch the sunrise if you can by the time you get down you're going to be hot and sweaty hop in one of their brand new showers I feel amazing had a nice breakfast thanks babe it was a it was a nice little State Park definitely different than kind of the dispersed camping we're used to with no people around like the night before our previous trip um but again this was for a very special purpose we were surprising my parents um they had a plan to trip here and so we booked the spot next to them as a surprise so something different but still fun yeah could probably spend a week just exploring up here tons of great dispersed camping as you can see some great state parks if you're more into that Comfort lifestyle anyway we're about to hit the highway here it's going to get loud on our way to Grand Dam let's go [Music] [Music] Grand Dam generates more hydroelectric power than any other dam in the United States and irrigates more than 671 th000 Acres within the Columbia Basin the dam is 1 M long 550 ft High 500 ft thick and weighs over 24 million tons it contains enough concrete to build a highway from Seattle to Miami and is more massive than the Great Pyramid of Giza damn I mean you knew it was coming pretty cool is this one the one like where the cement is still curing or is that Hoover or both cement both I don't know I think we're about to find out work on the dam began in the summer of 1933 this Public Works project was one of the biggest under President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal and employed thousands of men during the Great Depression the third power plant is the largest and when working at full capacity over 1 5 million gallons of water per second pass through the generators to power approximately 4.2 million homes in the Pacific Northwest when you go be sure to stop inside the visitor center and if you're there in the summer months make sure to catch the laser light show in the evening we hope you enjoyed coming along with us on this camping trip if you missed the first night where we dispersed camped in Douglas Creek Canyon we've linked that video here also make sure to
