here is a quick and easy way to ensure your televisions picture settings are properly calibrated for the NTSC video standard this certainly won't be the most scientific method but it'll get you close and without the need to use a lot of sophisticated test and measurement equipment you will need a way to feed a test pattern to your display the HDMI out of a capture card or similar is best if you opt for an image using a USB in the TVs media player be sure you have full control of the picture settings as some displays limit what characteristics can be calibrated go online if you have a smart TV and find an image or loop use the Society of motion picture and television engineers color bar pattern for this test as seen here make sure your displays brightness and contrast settings are at their mid point that's usually the default starting place once you have confirmed that you are ready to begin the first thing you will do is calibrate your displays brightness level to start turn your chroma or color control setting all the way down until you get a monochrome image on the screen like this look at the black boxes on the bottom of the screen examining the larger boxes you'll notice that the second in from the right has various strips of gray or black adjust your monitors brightness setting until the middle strip is not quite visible you'll find that the strip next to it on the right should be barely visible once you've properly set your displays brightness level one additional way to check is that you will no longer be able to distinguish the line between the other two skinny strips next to this one on the left now turn your monitors contrast setting all the way up the second box from the left along the bottom will become very bright and the middle strip we were just looking at may once again become visible if it is back off the contrast setting a little bit bringing the amount down otherwise leave it you'll know you have properly calibrated your displays contrast setting when only that one skinny strip from before is visible once again next let's turn our focus to properly setting up the colors look to see if your display has a blue check or blue only mode under the Advanced Settings higher-end models may have this feature otherwise you may have to resort to using a filter while some people suggest using gels by Lee and Orosco they may not work quite as well turn on the blue only mode and adjust your color or chroma setting so that the tall outside left bar and the tall outside right bar at the top both become equally as bright you'll notice that their reference to underneath each other your goal is to match these levels to each other it should appear as one continuous bar this is where you may see it not 100% match the goal here is get it as close as possible now adjust the hue until the inner - cyan and magenta bars are equally as bright once again they're referenced under each other you want the goal to be one continuous color bar once you have done that that's it your monitor is now calibrated you can turn off the blue check mode or remove your gel and enjoy
