Nice job! It was really neat to see all the metal work you did machining those parts on the lathe. How did you go about learning all that?

I question the time and materials in doing this to obtain a mediocre tool, but to each his own, this was a labor of love.

hello and welcome back to the current creation shop today I'm going to take this rusty old hand plane and see if we can bring it back to its former glory so as you can see this plane has had a fairly rough life before it came to me it was actually buried underneath a barn guy found it and said hey this uh this looks like it's something that's right up your alley from what I can tell this is either a stanley 180 or a 190 the only difference being on the 190 there's a little nicking blade right here the kind of scores the wood this thing is still rusted up I can't even tell if it's got one the 180 and 190 we're used to cut rabbets and grooves in your wood very similar to this duplex rather plane the 78 here you can see right underneath this is that nicking blade that I was talking about right here it basically just cuts the fibers of the wood to get them out of the way for you so what we're gonna do is basically I mean first things first we want to soak this thing a little bit of phosphoric acid and see what we can get to underneath all this rust and as you can see right here the chip panning is still there so we might be able to salvage this thing oh look at that looks like we have a a 180 - so now that we've had nice little look at this thing we're gonna see if we can get it in the ass and clean some of this up and see what we have left for solid material see if there's even anything worth trying to save in here so first things first we're gonna need something to put it in this is just a standard basic kick sheet you can pick them up at any grocery store and for our phosphoric acid we're just gonna use regular coke that should burn off a lot of it leave us with a pretty decent looking finish depending on what's underneath either way we're at least get a better look at it so let's uh see what we can do so here we are we're back it's the next day take them morning hope you slept well Jefferson bacon let's take a look and see if we got anywhere first off it's to give this little rock out of here like there she'll accept one day of soaking as you can see it doesn't really look too pretty but it definitely looks better than it did yesterday so let's take our handy scrub brush here remember only use your Knollys oldest looking scrub brush when it comes to something like this we'd only use something new when risk contaminating the old metal with new yeah and see if we can loosen you this up get that out of the way before we make a much bigger mess than we have already like that look at that don't know if you can see it but we're certainly able to see that old Stanley logo with the old texture that they have so I get the plain soda got the vents all cleaned up we can see that they did a bit of work actually we're not expecting a lot from it that's why we're using coca-cola as our acid you want something that's going to work nice and slow so you gotta see the progress see where we're going I'm not I'm not thinking we're gonna be able to get this into a usable plane a lot of these pieces are very hard to find so we want to be very careful not to destroy them while working on it so we're going to kind of have to step back a little bit we do want to get it nice to look in the nests and I think we can this is actually a lot better looking after the first dunk that I was expecting so let's let's put it back in another that and let it sit overnight again and see where we come up with this time I just wanted to take a look here at the the soda as its reacting with the plane this time we didn't have the same kind of reaction last time so I'm very interest to see what this actually pulls out of it but you can actually see where the bubbles are just kind of forming around the shape of the plane hopefully that means it's slowly eating away some of that rusty junk metal and we'll see what we end up with tomorrow we're back on day three here we've given this thing plenty of time to soak in the phosphoric acid and we've probably gotten as much done as we're going to with the coca-cola I think it's about time to pull it out of the chemical stripper and start doing something with a more mechanical stripper so what I'm going to do is pop it into the drill press place over here and I know what you're thinking why a drill press twice because it's my shop and I do it wrong basically the drill press place is a very adjustable vise I can set the height of it I can set the angle I can spin around and do all that and as of right now this is still a moon shop so this is the most versatile vise that I have set up right so I figure why not use it while I can so now that it's out of the acid and has been properly scrubbed with the grinder and the wire brush we can see that it's actually in a lot better shape than I was expecting given the time frame that it was in there it's still not in good shape but we can make out the stanley number 192 which means this should have the nicking blade over here and we can actually make out the stanley logo over here not well but it's there I think our next step is to try to try to break it down see if we can get this thing apart so we got you up nice and close here try to get this thing in here and see what we can do we're gonna go through this this particular bolt right here first I don't want to go too hard and risk oh well that was anticlimactic not that came out a lot easier than I thought it would see if any of the other ones want to play just as nice or if we just got lucky in that one now this next one here it's probably not gonna be a fun one these old flathead screws are known to be a bear to work with so we kind of want to tack this one a little bit gentler to make sure that we're nice and safe with it and just see if I can clean out this groove at all first all right that looks pretty clean let's see if she'll come out I want to get you a little bit closer on that let's see if we can get this out of here now there comes our lever cap not too bad another actual blade Wow so now that we've gotten it broken down this far and all this stuff has come out of here this is actually coming away a lot easier than I ever imagined but we still do have one more piece that has to come out this piece right here holds our depth stop and it looks to be in the worst shape out of all of them so this one's gonna be fun let me try putting the wrench on it first just the wrench or players want to see if that'll give us anything can't tell if that's breaking loose or just breaking oh she's loose she's uh she's broken never mind we broke it but I think we can still work with it sewers are coming in here looking at this see we have a little seam right here in the road that was easy enough so you can do to clean this off this one broken stud and the whole thing is actually pretty impressive to pull something this old that's been sitting this long apart and only faced one casualty is a lot better than I expected now we got to see if we can get this out though let's sing it to the drill press so let's see we can do I'm gonna use one of these bits to start this these are centering bits to the middle eighth they're very short and very stiff so that'll get us started into this hole and then we can go through the regular twist bit all right that should be good for putting on a regular drill bit down through let's uh let's give that a shot now that we got everything apart let's see what we can do to clean up these the iron and the cap iron they've soaked enough so we're gonna try it out with just the grinder [Music] nice and clean I think you might as well try to keep this blade this iron here just take off that front edge where it's all rotted away try to put an edge on it starting to really like this old Mad Max style dystopian destroyed finish on it see what we can do okay so now that we've gotten this thing broken down and we can kind of see what we're working with we can get to get a game plan together as far as what needs to be done still these knobs I'm gonna go through and replace they they work but I think we could do a little bit better with some brass I think it would give it a little bit nicer look the blade definitely will need to be sharpened this little hole here needs to get the stud knocked out of it and a new piece made and speaking of making that new piece without having the original it's gonna be very interesting doing this however we do have the 78 Stanley plane right here it's got the same basic the same basic knob for the adjustment of the death stop and the same basic depth stop too so we can kind of model it somewhat off of this we can also see the nicking blade here on this one it's completely toast we're gonna see if we can get anything out of there but I can't make any promises that looks rough Tom after that's all done we want to give it a nice finish I like this whether finish here but we're gonna take it a step farther you're gonna try to knock out all the Japan get it down to bare metal I'll probably give it a gun blue so it's a nice dark black and then we're all of these highlights and accents are on this plane we're gonna try to do the same thing just with raw bare metal and oil and a lot of that's going to come just from flattening out the bottom here we can wrap that up around and get some of that contrast to it so now that we know we have to do we might as well just do it so montage time [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] okay so now that we have our blade nice and sharp and polished to a mirror finish we have our knobs and everything made for all the adjustments the only thing that we really have left to do before we can put a finish on this thing is flatten off the bottom here so that we could have a nice smooth part to slide against the wood wood that we're working on and then square up these edges so that we can get into a nice tight shoulder with it so the easiest way to get this done is to clamp it up in the milling machine take a face cut right here flip it over index it again and take everything else off so that's what we're gonna do back to the montage [Music] well there it is guys I can't believe it myself from uh from gonna bend and basically nothing more than a boat anchor to an actual working playing I love the little rat rod feel that it has to it with the the patina from you know being buried underground for 50-plus years and then all the new brass on there just uses a little bit more life and that oil finish just really sets it off I mean it's definitely definitely taken on a life of its own and now I know you guys are all thinking take a chip well he had a lil so there you have it guys 50 years buried underneath a bond three days soaking in coca-cola and a few hours of the metal aid and we have a working functional tool it just goes to show you man this old stuff you just you can't kill it what is all this thanks for watching I really hope you enjoyed what you saw hope you lend a little bit of something if you have any ideas or anything please leave them below in the comments and as always like subscribe share all of that stuff it's really appreciated and now until next time have a good one see you later
