Bulls x Nets 1998 ECFR Game 1

[Music] for eight more teams this is opening night of the NBA Playoffs good evening everybody I'm Ernie Johnson the Chicago Bulls have their fingerprints all over the Larry O'Brien trophy five times in this decade they have claimed it as NBA champions and tonight they begin their run for number six it's the opener of our playoff double-header here on TNT Michael and the Bulls hosting the New Jersey Nets and just a bit later we're gonna make tracks for LA Colby and company hosting the Portland Trailblazers meantime over on TBS the action is already started between bitter Eastern Conference rivals the Knicks and the heat in Miami and the TBS nightcap Kevin Garnett leads Minnesota into Seattle to face Gary Payton in the Sonics Chuck Daly and Kenny Smith will offer their playoff insights as the night goes on but right now let us head to the home of the champs the United Center Thank You Ernie and welcome to Chicago where the United Center is hopping it's playoff time once again for the two-time defending champions the Chicago Bulls and the question that won't go away is this the last dance for the incomparable Michael Jordan and his Chicago teenager so tonight Game one of the best of five first round matchup in the Eastern Conference between the New Jersey Nets and the Chicago Bulls hi everyone I'm dick Stockton's along with Hubie Brown the Bulls begin their journey for what they hope will be their six NBA title in eight years but all year long they've been playing under the cloud of the uncertain future as to whether Michael Jordan Scottie Pippen or coach Phil Jackson will return next year but he'll be this is a team that won 62 games this year when you consider the injuries the distractions that overcome it is really amazing that they did win 62 I think I think you have to start with the entry factor first and that is Scottie Pippen and Luc Longley two starters and in two key subs Steve Kerr as well as Billy wedington missed between 24 and 38 games in spite of that they win 62 and then in games with teams that have over a 500 record they were 35 and 15 they're different she'll be in the key they were third in the league at 7.1 doing at both ends of the floor now somebody had to step up and have outstanding years to anchor this and you can see Michael Jordan wins his 10th scoring title 28 points 7 points and then Dennis Rodman 7th and rebound 7 straight rebounding title at 15 a game and when you think about that dick he not only played power forward he also played the center position more than an unsung hero for the Chicago Bulls the New Jersey Nets really are an unknown entry coming into the playoffs people around the country do not really know much about this team they are in the playoffs for the first time in four years but they come in really with one hand tied behind their back and here's why their leading rebounder Jason Williams has been bothered with a broken thumb but he will start tonight after being out Sam Cassell their leading scorer also start although he's bothered with a groin and at 90% and they're sensational rookie Keith van Horn suffered a stomach virus and he will not start but will play in this game so the New Jersey Nets in the playoffs what are they all about about dick they win 43 games they're the number one scoring team in the Eastern Conference at 99 points they have seven guys in double figures and they have a very deep and experienced bench now you say wait a sec how do i score so many points they're in the bottom third in the league standings in field goal percentage three-point shooting and assists well in order to get this you've got to force turnovers and get more shot attempts now we'd like to show you a graphic right here they are first in offensive rebounding at 16 a game second in forced turnovers at 18 they get to the foul line they're third in the league at 29 attempts and then the steals are there but it still comes down to since 1991 the Bulls have been at 7 playoffs this is an outstanding record 21 and 1 in the first round they do indeed take care of business in the first round and move on well there was a mob scene when Michael Jordan arrived tonight Ron Harper and Michael Jordan at guard and Scottie Pippen Dennis Rodman and Toni Kukoc upfront Ron Harper was a possible scratch because of a strained back but he is alright and his starting tonight Joe Crawford Luc Grillo and Bernie fryer of the officials and the opening tip and it'll be pols possession to start the game we're understand that the Bulls naturally will stay within their triangle once in a while play open court at the other end of the floor the nets are very quick and inbounding the ball getting it down and getting into an early offense Toni Kukoc and Scottie Pippen Biffen of course comes in with fresh legs into the series after being injured for the first 33 games to start the year Michael Jordan misses the first shot and misses the big straight for the boys we have the two best in the litigation Williams at right at seven a game Dennis Rodman at five offensive boards a game but Williams not starting and the Pippen in the backcourt ten on the shot clock for the boat or for the bills as Gill guards Pippen Rodman sets a screen and with three seconds to go stepping on the line a violation was Ron Harper and the Nets have the ball with no score yet in the opening minute we have two outstanding offensive rebounding teams the nets are first in the leg got close to 17 and then right there Chicago third that right around 15 and a half the game good matchup right here Van Horn against Kukoc men came Van Horn who's been in bed the last two days with that stomach virus but having a spectacular rookie year gives the Nets relieved now he's seeing the Nets are picking up down the floor and the reason for this is that they want to run time long and then possibly eliminate one of the options out of the Train they've been posting up with castle on a mismatch inside the lay up is missed by Pippin but a foul is called let's check in with Craig Sager's for the latest on Keith van Horn obviously had the stomach virus which developed into an upper respiratory infection and a sore throat as Nick mentioned he was sick spent the last two days John Calipari didn't think he'd be able to start however after working him very vigorously for 20 minutes earlier today he did not develop a fever nor did he ever relapse of the flu when the coach came out just moments before announcing his starting lineup Van Horne buried a 3 from the corner gave thumbs up and they put him in the starting lineup and a good thing for the New Jersey Nets because van Hoorn next to Tim Duncan has been the most productive rookie in the NBA this year one free throw by Pippen here is copling a good shooter and he is been playing well as of late chris gatlings gives the net support on lady now Sam Cassell is the man that makes this ballclub run and you can see there you are going to attack the Bulls they feel that they can potentially wear them down over the 48 minutes upper leaves it for Robin 10 on the shot clock and here is pitbull working against Gill if it has a height advantage on Kendall Gill Robin the offensive rebound and it's last touched by the bowl the matchup of Gatling in rotten this this is a ripen can overpower Gatling on the glass here is Van Horn Van Horn and Cassell I've had outstanding seasons they feel they have nothing to lose and they are loose punch coming into this series Kukoc uses a screen problem epiphany to switch him all over one second on the shot clock Rodman gives it to Pippen and Scottie Pippen gives the pose nearly three minutes long by Kendall Gill and Van Horn he's overmatched with diamonds these new guys have back in there as far as the center position is concerned no basket as Robin fouled Gatling before the shine Rony Seikaly now a member of this team and of course Jason Williams will also play and in fact Williams is coming into the game now Jason Williams second in rebounding behind Dennis Rodman at 13 and a half the game they have taken out Keith van Horn right now and he's holding his stomach over there while the trainer is talking to him now in Jason Williams we know that we have a real stud on the boards at both ends the cell misses and Williams gets the offensive rebound and yes all right too hard on the layin and the poles and all-star for the first time in his garage since I've been in league I've never seen a guy average seven [Applause] the spectacular move inside but couldn't Bulls are playing without luc longley they're probably not playing as serious as Michael Jordan gets his first points of the game Longley have played only two of the last 24 games out with a bruised left knee not expected to see action right away in the series Pitons misses from outside and here come the Bulls who trail by 7 Jordan guarded by kettles and the Nets will put several different players on is working in New Jersey's favor now it comes down to shot selection can they maintain a solid shot selection over the 48 minutes Sam Cassell who is bothered by the groin and a back injury but the man John Calipari said who got us here gets his first points of the game Jordan over kettles him points if you're trying to trap cycle join you've got to come a little bit stronger than ed Casal came on the trap and we'll get split into these but the Nets very active to start this game UB now you're going to see a baseline move by Kukoc then we have a little shop lock there by Kendall they shoot the down the offensive glass and scar Sam Cassell in Kendall Gill gills shooting over Scottie Pippen Toni Kukoc position for the rebound so the Bulls coming back in his first quarter handle the pass out of bounds Nets ball Craig Sager well Keith van Horn complained of a stomach ailment also came out to talk to the trainer's head our Sonico they gave him fluids and I talked to Coach Calipari and says he's feels good enough to go back in so next dead ball we'll see Keith van Horn all right Craig thank you very much dears gatling and he cannot convert on the good pass [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the trail John Calipari Stan he missed the layup at one ends of the floor it's amazing how quick in the NBA they score at the other end usually within three to four seconds the New Jersey Nets who lost all four games to the poles in the regular season and Jayson Williams with a good feed from to sell on the screen and roll and New Jersey up five Green before the ham display the first quarter now by Sam Cassell now here we have the Bulls coming on a break this is a three on one a good decision and a smart move by Cassell do not foul a man because they needs to Sal he needs major minutes in this ballgame now this is just a nice screen and roll with Jason Williams stepping up Kukoc very soft on the rotation he fan horn as Craig had anticipated has come back into the game replacing Chris got Lee Harper misses the first free throw there is Van Horn who has four points both on perimeter shots nikka nearly going defensively new jersey is trying to front the majority of the post of people and they are paying the price because chicago taking their time throwing the lob over the top and they're getting high percentage shots naturally layers select call for an mix-up and the Bulls in position to take their first lead of the game with 339 remaining in the first quarter that a 20-second timeout call by Chicago I like the game plan offensively for the New Jersey Nets they're doing a very nice job on screen and row staggered screens staggered screen and roll situation they're getting what they want but when you played the Bulls you have to be careful and that is you've got to take your time get high percentage shots and then defend right now the Nets are not defending they're very soft at the defensive end of the floor easier said than done and we might not coming up tonight it's Game one of the Minnesota Seattle series on TBS and following our game it's the Portland Trailblazers against the Los Angeles Lakers so a lot of basketball yet to be personal foul Douglas a big hero in the playoff clinching game against Detroit last Sunday and going to the basket is foul and upset they did affect the basket as he just slammed the post behind while Sherman Douglas is an offensive player he's always looking to score and this is just a strong move in an easy layup and he knows that he misses the bunny sermon Douglas who had 18 points and 11 assists 5 steals and 3 rebounds coming a big playing for the point guard Casella was hurt against the toy he was cut by Denver this year at age 31 and looked like maybe his career was on the downslide well he's won at least three games by himself with resinates this year in a backup role one out of two for Sherman Douglas and the Bulls right now the nets are really small you have to sound and he seconds that was the first foul in the last two minutes so not a shooting situation he's had the Nets will inbound with four point seven on the clock well that was a very smart foul mainly because Douglas had his shoulder ahead of the defender Gill will inbound and he's got Douglas hot running down Randy brown now guarded Sherman Douglas and Douglas fires it up Sherman Douglas giving the New Jersey Nets a boost him that they need it as dill trail by four after the first quarter now Sherman Douglas can get it done he is an offensive player and you just cannot say that he is not going to look for that shot attempt first so at the end of the first quarter here in the United Center sparked by Ron Harper's 13 points the Bulls lead events by a score of 31 to 27 a high scoring affair the Chicago Bulls with a 31 to 27 lead over the New Jersey Nets in the one and eight matchup as we start the second quarter Michael Jordan a relatively quiet first quarter scored only six points on two for six shooting hit both of his free throws that's because Ron Harper who's a bothered with a strained back homos did not start tonight leads the Bulls with 13 Gil tops the Nets with six at the end of the first quarter New Jersey 52% Chicago 50 Chicago six offensive rebounds seven points on the task right and they were easy baskets at that steep curve has come in the and Randy brown makeup the back door [Music] is my Brown into the hands of Alicia's Harris Owen Van Horn and Gil are the five in there for the nests here's Harris [Applause] van Horn tending his call against Scottie Pippen and the offensive glass and you're getting a good idea of how they ended up first in the league [Music] well the nets in a high-scoring games staying with the Bulls trailing by two here's what's on tap van Horn has been back doored to the desk Chris Gatling has come back in for the dance along with Kerry Kittles piddles with two fouls there is Gatling who has been shooting better lately and figures to have more playing time in this series as long as luc longley isn't in there so right now the Nets have been horn we just said six guys on the floor that balances it out because John Calipari for men on the floor when the Bulls beat the Nets in that overtime game back on January 23rd Jason caffee winning of the game on a basket with goaltending against Jason Williams he had four then six now it averages out to five you can see that the substitution was made and Maris did not leave the floor there is the horns hosting up against Burrell on a height advantage on stylist Dan a foul on stop Burrell will send keep Van Horn to the free-throw line soonish Van Horn went up on the shot you know Burrell bumped him below the waist and if that was the reason for the call I'd like what then horn does with this club this is a new addition we haven't really heard much about him in the latter part of the season and if he plays like he did in Toronto and takes over the game a little bit more to a residual effect as he goes into the playoff system around Kenny I wouldn't think so I mean first of all he's 19 years old he's in the NBA he has that means he has a great deal of confidence first of
