listener well last night set the tone for tonight and it's always been that way I think the last couple of years has been lackluster of a all-star weekend but last night Josh Smith set the tone for what's supposed to happen today and I tell you what he did child he made everybody go home that's playing in the all-star game tonight and say I gotta come with my best because he stole the show Saturday night and I want to steal his Sunday night you know it's like a boxing match you have all these preliminary fights and they can be great but here's the heavyweight matchup and the night the east versus west of the heavyweight events this is Foreman versus Ali this is Tyson Holyfield this is it mano-a-mano the best of the best and everybody's watching well I think both you guys hit it right on the head nail right on the head this is what everybody came to see three-point contest that's good slam dunk is good but this is the main event and you saw the cavalcade of stars warming up a hand up you know but they gotta guard us another and also I got the sword in the stick so I got a go at Duncan to the poles but we're gonna try to use our quickness and get out there and they gotta guard us so that's where we look at it congratulations suppose the about here again having a huge game tonight guys who's who's big well I'm looking for that's the two first-year players Dewayne Wade and LeBron James why because this is their first time and they got Shaq on their team so Shaq's gonna get the rebound kick it out to LeBron and he's gonna get into the open court where he plays the best that I got two names for you Tracy McGrady and Kobe Bryant I think they gonna try to put on a show tonight they've kind of been forgotten everybody's giving all the loss in LeBron to Wayne we trying to divide the minutes young Greg Popovich told us he spent five hours last night trying to devise a schedule where he can get guys minutes so everybody gets a chance to play then with eight minutes to go in the game the games going to be competitive and that's when you're going to see coaches go for the win and you know it's amazing because Gregg Popovich never spent more than five minutes worrying about my playing time but this is what it's all about all 12 of these guys on each roster deserve to play and show what they can do and get out and enjoy this game Stan Van Gundy told us that he's so concerned about everyone getting close to an equal amount of playing time he says tahaafe probably antagonize all 12 players the West with three straight wins they've taken four of the last five they won last year and Los Angeles overall the East has won 33 the West has 120 I miss an all-star game that presents the the NBA's faces of the future seven players 25 or younger taking part LeBron Dwyane Wade Gilbert Arenas Manu Ginobili Amar'e Stoudemire Rashard Lewis and yelled me tomorrow I think what you'll see here early in this game too when you look at the starting lineups we did this in our open the disparity of the Western Conference the size and the East so what both coaches will probably do they'll go to their benches early because when the East comes in actually with bigger players the West comes in with smaller so we're gonna try to get the matchups out there so that they'll be able to defend the way they'd like you because if you look at the West's guards are bigger than the East forwards but in a game like this as you know Doug it's up and down I actually think Grant Hill is going to have a big advantage early on he'll be guarded by either Garnett or Tim Duncan I think this game could be pretty fun for grant and we're keeping a close eye on the handshakes between the East and the West Kobe and Shaq did not come together incidentally they did not have dinner plans here in Denver over the weekend I thought we'd get a perfunctory greet well Steve and I didn't eat dinner either so hopefully we'll be able to get through this telecast tonight Marv I don't know a lot of tension here in the although you have been on talking terms yes we have yes we have our teams y'all me and Shaquille O'Neal and this 54th NBA all-star game is underway controls for the east being played here at the start by Tracy McGrady Allen Iverson put the step on Kobe Bryant and here is Vince Carter for 20 you can see right away Tim Duncan guarded Carter very unfamiliar with happy to cover a guy who's gonna shoot a lot of three-pointers so the batch ups already a factor here Vince Carter on a switch Connor now to Kevin Garnett of the t-wolves to Duncan up with a handle Grant Hill the Nets games passing on the three and as Yao Ming steps away Yao Ming that time was caught on the broad James only 27 and 27 after winning 58 games last season going to the Western Conference Finals and in Kevin Garnett has been playing hurt as a Blake Garnett leads in the NBA in rebounds and six off his first of the night to be interesting to see how they did with the beautiful barely contact with Gregg Popovich before he said look I've been hurting a little bit take it easy not too many minutes I wouldn't expect much more than 15 20 minutes for Garnett Popovich also telling us that Tim Duncan bothered by a D and an ankle limited minutes the same for Steve Nash although Steve said let's see how it goes during the course of the game for Grady with room yes Brillion yeah heard also from sources that was at least discussed was Lamar Odom going to Sacramento for Peja Stojakovic and Bobby Jackson now both the Kings and the Lakers went contacted denied that such talks took place which usually means they took place guys the Lakers point of view I could certainly understand that because getting these similar players down you know I never felt like when they were playing together that they ever got in sync Lamar Odom a sketball on top of the floor to make some plays in the post and he didn't get it much but the Kobe's did a lot of dominating in the basketball and they really haven't played much together this season because of Kobi Simmons you guys go for every hundred traits that are discussed about one of them actually goes through so who knows this could be this conjecture at this point is that a slap that David alders nearly a statement that I think is true I think Doug would agree but feel free but just try to get you in a little trouble here I start thinking about most valuable players this might be the most balanced all sports all-star game you've seen in terms of scoring I mean you look at Iverson James Duncan and Bryant all of them very you know able to beat the MVP but you know Iverson has 13 points 9 assists but he also is 414 the six turnovers so interesting to see who is the MVP here today Duncan's got the best number 7 for 10 from the field as we saw 15 points 9 boards but they're gonna lose probably so this is a tough one Dwyane Wade is come on late as head tomato Neal five from downtown this game's not over yet Abreu and it took you four controls he might be the inmates right mother's 5 of 8 from the omelet three-point line here comes the west-allen from way downtown backed up by the bits key McGrady past on the three come to you however the games flowing and that's the way you play and the game is easy for me like this just having four other guys I didn't get double-teamed all night you know I didn't get the attention that I used to get and it just makes it that much easier for me Liz Robbins New York Times Ellen you didn't get a lot of the attention because you had other guys doing that like Shaq and and LeBron with Shaq now in the east and LeBron coming on do you think that the balance of power has really shifted towards the east yeah absolutely when you take section killer nail from the West and then branding the east you know 9 times I think you can say to the east is stronger regardless the other four guys you have on the floor I mean cuz you're gonna make everybody so much better and he's gonna do so much 14 and it's not what is just his scoring or his passing ability always rebound anything like that is his presence you know you got a guy on the floor and so many people give him that much attention it just makes the game easy for you he's the easiest player in the world to play with you know and I found out firsthand and night you know I thought about coming into this all-star game and everybody was talking about you know why is this one so special well one of the main reason is I had opportunity to play with somebody I thought was most dominant player in the world and I missed something that I remember in church back corner Allen Bob Holtzman ESPN just curious the alley-oop to LeBron James in the first quarter how'd that happen he was just on a break and um my man took his eyes off LeBron he came to pick up the ball and once I saw a mom make a move towards me I just do I just do the ball in a hat I mean with LeBron events those guys you don't have to throw a perfect pass I mean there make it look perfect Allen this is second time that your all-star MVP the last time a lot of controversy swirled around you we've seen you go through some ups and downs tell us what's gonna be different about this this all-star MVP Allen Iverson compared to the last one I'm older it's simple as that I mean I you you can't expect me to stay 25 26 years old forever you got to grow up you know a lot of the mistakes that that I made before in my life you know I wish it never happened but um I'm happy that I made those mistakes make sure I don't make them again and learn from it's all just in becoming a man when you're in the NBA and you come to the league everybody expect you to be some God as groomed already grown man and you know cannot make mistakes but I mean I'm from the ghetto and you know people give me a million dollars added 21 years old yeah I mean I I didn't know how to hack you know but I mean I'm a grown man I'm a husband I'm a father you know what three kids and one on the way I mean I got I got a ten-year-old daughter that can read the paper now understand things that she see on TV so I think about that before I make a lot of decisions that I make now and the whole thing is just me maturing and getting older a lot of things that I've done in my life I'm not proud of but I'm proud of the fact that I recognize that you know those things weren't the right things do and I move forward in my life and I'm trying to be a better person first and then a better basketball player Alan Phil Jasmine fell off your daily news on TV you dedicated the game to the passing of your best friend's mother can you expand a little bit on your best friend and what kind of relationship you had with his mom I mean he's my best friend you know we've been friends since I was 14 years old you know you know he's the guy that you know always coming me as no Allen Iverson the friend instead of Allen Iverson a basketball player you know he always kept it real with me like that you know he was always there for me when I was down you know and he's gonna be there when I'm on top but um just just a best friend like anybody else in here has somebody there's not dead blood today close to and felt like their blood that's who he was to me and I know how much he loved his mom and um you know a lot of times I couldn't talk to him I didn't know what to say to him because I never experienced nothing like that I can never imagine anybody losing their mother and for him to go through it you know it was tough for me but you know I I felt good about myself because I did everything that I could to try to help him get through it and I think he loved me even more for that Andre still last question over there um Chris Thomas in Rocky Mountain News could you just talk about LeBron James's play and a lot of people were calling this kind of a coming-out party for him and all that and how was it like lining up alongside him in the backcourt I mean it was good you know I played with him before on the Olympic team and I watched more TV all the time he's a he's a good friend of mine you as well as his mom and rest his friends so you know a lot of times instead of me getting hype about the things he do on the court I just feel good about him being able to do it and and the feet up that he that that he gets from from y'all guys you know I I feel good about you know the things that you people say about them and other people say about them um and it's just a great feeling but you know I always let them know that you know LeBron James right now is on the top of the world you know but don't ever forget that these same people that put you on top of the world it can put you under you know and long as he realized that long she realized the people with the pen and a pad and those cameras in his face not his friends and they just doing their job he'll be all right it's not personal with any of y'all but you know because you're doing your job you got to make a living but be aware of it and don't get caught up you know cuz I thought plenty times that reporters with my friend laughed in my face smile in my face but their first opportunity to knock me down when I made a mistake in my life they were right there at my front step and they weren't smiling so that's the only message that I try to get her to Braun and I hope he never had to go through anything you know people talk about the maturity level that he has hopefully he didn't learn from some of the things that went on in my life or other guys like to whereas he
