Nets x Bulls 1998 ECFR Game 3

last year's NBA finalist grandpa Wednesday night spotlight on TNT welcome back to the playoffs everybody I'm Ernie Johnson we're gonna tip things off with the Chicago Bulls they're in New Jersey tonight trying for a three-game sweep of the Nets there hasn't been a sweep in the playoffs yet this year meantime in the West later on TNT it's the number one seed the Utah Jazz playing in Houston that series tied at a game of peace and about an hour from now on TBS it's Game four between the sun's and the Spurs San Antonio just one win away but we get you started with Michael and the Bulls think and sweep in New Jersey the suspense is killing me [Music] it's always good to get it over quick as quickly as we can deal it we great last thing I do is give this team hope you know and a young team you never know what they can do with the hope [Music] here at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford New Jersey the Bulls attempt to sleep on the first round series against the young and still confident New Jersey Nets its game three the best-of-five and hello again everyone I'm dick Stockton's along with Hubie Brown and Craig Sager Phil Jackson decided he was going to pack for two games he's not taking anything for granted but also packing his uniform luc longley the big man of the bulls who has not played yet in the series he can be called upon if needed likely will not play he'll be the Bulls very interestingly is won two games by a total of eight points yet it is still two to nothing how do you interpret the way they've gone so far I think you have to say dick they're getting to the foul line for 39 attempts a game but they're missing 14 and so many points to giving away also a better job on their defensive boards Jason Williams eight offensive rebounds a game and then that's what a +10 in the painted area in points scored but there are people who are stepping up and getting a chop done Michael is averaging 35 point 5 and how about the fact that he's attempted 40 foul shots in this series Scottie Pippen very quietly 21 points 8 rebounds and that's for a small forward Toni Kukoc playing big and also quietly with the 16 points and the 6 rebounds the New Jersey Nets come into this game you'll be the healthy as they have been in this series as their first home game in four years in the playoff Sam Cassell despite the growing injury will dress and is expected to see some action not off the top however now the Nets have come close they haven't won what do they need to do to get over the top to win at least one game in the series I think they have to stay what's going on five guys in double figures they're spreading it around Jason Williams must continue his dominance on the boards he's never doing 16 Lawrence again now they have to shoot a higher percentage you can see only 42 29 and 3 they're only getting to the line 23 times that's poor because they're one of the best in the lay without Sam Casals 20 points thick Kittles Gil and Van Horn must shoot a higher percentage and by that we mean can they get up there between 45 and 48 percent and take the pressure off the front line people tough against a good defensive team like the Chicago Bulls play so that's the story here coming up Game three of our best of five series the Nets playing at home before 20,000 fans against the world champion [Music] well we got the Bulls in the Nets followed by the Jazz and the Rockets on TNT and moving into the guest seat Derek Harper who's NBA career with Dallas New York and Orlando has spanned 15 years and has included nine playoff appearances welcome to our Atlanta studio or any Johnson along with Kenny Smith once again and Derek Harper joining us tonight Derek it's great to see you again see you on Finny I know that you face mr. Jordan in the playoffs before you seen him in early games and you've seen him when when they can smell it and they can close you out how does it change with mr. Jordan well this is an obvious case of been there done that Michael Jordan and the Bulls I thank her 23 and 1 and first-round playoff when when the playoff is going and I think if anyone knows how to close out of series I think the Bulls and and Michael Jordan along with Scottie Pippen know how to do that guys breaking out an early stat on us already now but game 2 of our doubleheader you'll play my wallet is missing this guy and in my pocket so much over the years he probably got that too so I'm a little nervous in the dirt throw the ball so much but you kept him from a ring off now what's going on with Houston tonight against Utah just what the doctor ordered Utah for Houston and it's a sick team Houston was and all of a sudden that's the antidote Utah slow down team and I think they have a good chance of beating them tonight that'll be Game two of our doubleheader series tied at a game apiece coming right up though the Bulls in the Nets 1 of 3 games you're gonna see on Turner home court this year Sherman Douglas and Kerry Kittles at guard Kendall Gill Jayson Williams Keith van Horn up front let's check in with Craig Sager it may sound far-fetched but there are some of the Nets organization who feel with us healthy Sam Cassell would be the Nets would be f2o instead of the Bulls vixx is an exercise bike that they have brought out just for Cassell who is bothered by a left groin injury and a lower back injury you'll probably come out here and ride the bike late in the first quarter play a couple of minutes and they hope to have letting the NBA's top playmakers run this show at the end of the game acted it all right Craig Sam Cassell is going to see action early to spell Sherman Douglas but not too early and then of course late in the game where you need Cassell's points remember he was a top scorer this year for this club he'll try to go late in the game well dick when you think about it Van Horn averaged 20 during the year he's only averaging 10 because of the stomach virus to south 20 points he's only averaging 2 but gives Sherman Douglas a lot of credit he has stepped up with 18 a game Jim Clark Steve javi and Nolan vine are the officials working this game and you mentioned Keith van Horn stomach virus both he and Chris Gatling who seem to catch that stomach virus are all right they showed no effects at all so they're ready to go thus the nets are the healthiest they have been considering Cassell's problems ready for the jump ball the nets are in white the Bulls in their traditional read under way and it's controlled by we're going to jump it again deep javi will have it reach him Phil Jackson whose mom Elizabeth's celebrated her 91st birthday in Game one of this series she's living out in the west where Jackson might find himself after this year controlled by the Bulls in the regular season the Nets played the Bulls to an overtime game at home here but lost all for Robin this is the first shot of the game ain't incra New Jersey is to push the ball at every opportunity kento Gayle Hicks [Music] in game 2 despite foul trouble as the Nets get the turnover unfortunately a better team he could see a little age on the when they double-team they're late getting tonight the diagonal fashion Kendall Gill with his second field goal and this is an athletic team with a lot of energy and the frankly understand why the Bulls want to get rid of his team as soon as possible as Gil by full glory it's always dangerous for the hand check and what you do not want tonight is to shorten the minutes of Kendall Gill now you see he had him and a note like with the reach see he grabbed them and put his hand right on his hip now you do not want Gil and Kittles to be in foul trouble Amy both of these guys because of their athleticism and how they bring down the full defense off the dribble and they weren't foul trouble in those first two games which hampered the net effort billions ow [Applause] who put the Nets away with a bass 19-point effort and eight rebounds on good shooting on Sunday on the early gull and I don't like what I see with the nets because any time that they need a quick rotation it is definitely late going inside against two coats he passes out to Kindle dude the Nets look good offensively when they're blowing out on the break in and off the dribble they have the quickness to beat their defenders and the first turnover of the game and the Mets lead by one they have the ball little more than two minutes gone by as New Jersey three of four to start this game shooting wise at all three baskets by Kendall Gill is his first Miss and it goes over to the top to Chicago how is a nice staggered screen a kind of a an interesting angle thick right towards the corner that freed up Kendall Gill and a reason is they caught Scottie Pippen's going under the second string no coach is guarded by man horn and even the nets extended their defense to make board on that instance here is Rothman and Harper gets a screen from Dennis Rodman and hit so the ball starting to hit perimeter shots Harper playing despite the screen back that's one more since the first quarter of game on three outside shots and Chicago's may have been easy it's like playing horse in your backyard tipped away by rocket notify defensive play by Dennis a new hair coloring style which we'll get into shortly now to cover all areas during the playoffs including Dennis Rodman's color of his hair coach [Applause] and the Bulls lead by 3 9 to 6 right now the Bulls are in cruise control they're getting everything that they want after one or two passes Gill guarded by pimping Jordan right now is on Van Horne giving up several inches Gill working against Pippen tucked away and another defensive play related and the Bulls are toying with it that's early on and we're going to get a 20-second timeout by Calipari well dick they just got away with this town Scottie Pippen definitely Bank Kendall Gill but anytime that you're on the old defensive team as many times that's why Calipari is out on the floor right now yelling at the referee because he he's very concerned about that last plane across the Millea here limited to how many athletes you have who can play Scottie Pippen and that was a smart move by Chicago they took Hill right into the post posted him up and study whether she wanted to the rim Gill is listed at six five but he's more closer to six three so a big height advantage for Scottie Pippen who hits the free throws you mentioned how the Bulls have been horrendous from the line no one more than Pippen who came in to 53% from the stripe well Jordan is missing five the game Pippen is missing four and Kukoc three now there are three guys that you want to send to the valley so when you hit the misses there and just shoot a conservative average thick these games would be by anywhere from eight to ten points per contest lucious Harris comes in for Gill so Harris who has seemed action and actually more playing time that you would have expected from him skilled who has six points on three field goals it goes to the bench Bob Harris is at Long Beach State six foot six and he's a good athlete it'll be a good matchup for Scott nutless Kendall skittles has yet to attempt a shot after leading the nest with 23 points on Sunday and here is Kerry Kittles [Music] boy shooting he's now 4 for 9 from the trifectas and it's a 13 to 211 game shooting has been outstanding on both teams gets inside not a easy to force upon dell'arte what the dick to my advantage Dennis Rodman was definitely percent now at playoff time he's down at 44 right now the main thing that is taken away dick is his ability to be a 3-point shooter he was always fun times launching four or five a game now here in replacing Michael Jordan who goes out with them if you have not seen any of the games this year they played six times Chicago's won all six new jersey has not scored a hundred points in any of the games the guy who hurts them because you can see it tonight because of if you rotate the ball against the New Jersey traps the second pass will always open up but wide open Chuck that's where car is in this first quarter not not so much for the 33 points but how about the fact that we have not mentioned Jason Williams name at either end of the floor he's averaging 16 rebounds 8 on the offensive board in this series he has been invisible in this first quarter and the Bulls yet to miss from the free-throw line Bill Weddington checking in in the final minute of play on earth 34 to 26 those playing a very efficient and impressive first quarter against a heads [Music] Gatlin is getting the measure of Dennis Rodman who appears upset got Lynwood nine off the bench well that's twice in a row they've done for the steel and they've allowed him to just be back your and one and take the other off the dribble why do that why not if he efficiency he's gonna gifts the bass conceded possessing to because the ball ran right through his hands [Applause] Phil Jackson said I expect the Nets to come out as a frenzy let's take our best shot and then take over later but they have not come out of the frenzy no they have not they're looking for the nets to shift gears on defense eight on the shot clock cuccos tries to go around sightly and here his money just cut the corner and that's where he could kill ya he's got that perimeter shot see when a shot clock does go to a bill Weddington in the corner you have to close him out by that we need Jim him does she know he's going to shoot me Jim he's not going to drive from the corner there is no place to go if there's a visit man both teams shooting the lights out thus far five points goals lead here scallions [Music] Gatling now has 11 points on 5 or 7 shooting coming off the deathbed call he's opening up his arsenal because he's a little fun to get you moving to criticize in line that first fadeaway - newbie you're coming to the early here in the second that's trying to avoid elimination and three straight Douglas goes up and lost the ball driving to the basket and we'll have a timeout with 934 remaining here in the second Bulls on top five three I'm talking with AJ Williams Jason's father and what are your thoughts about this series and Jason's comments are they gonna win minutes they were I think me a bullet out of it Chicago and Chicago is just cruising right now there they are executing beautifully they are looking for transition they're beating the nets in the open floor at every opportunity with clear reserves they keep going to man orange and they continue to give him an opportunity to work from either wing he can take to coach off the dribble that's going to give me a high percentage potential Kukoc has won they gave out earlier Murrell Scottie Pippen has come in the game for Bill Wennington so not only to the Bulls it matched their biggest lead of the game of eight but they have all of their starters it with the exception of Harper out and Randy brown in there van Horn with the free throw nets abduct one of the line marks fussball their 2 / 4 from the line Chicago is already 10 to 11 44
