hello everybody my name is katja and i'm a furniture artist if you're new to my channel what i do here is find old unwanted furniture and bring it back to life [Music] today i got this old buffet and what i'm planning to do is sand the top the front drawers change the hardware and paint it with sage green this piece is actually in amazing shape it's going to be an easy makeover i'm going to paint it in sage green because sage green is it color right now like everybody wants sage green so we're doing kind of like a modern a makeover so today's the prep day and the first thing i'm going to do is remove this hardware because i'm changing it because i simply don't like this style it gives me outdated vibes so first we're going to remove that then we're going to sand the top and front doors in this area on the door and then we're going to clean everything and that way we have a completely clean and prepared piece for tomorrow for painting [Music] these things are usually very easy to remove you just remove these nails and everything comes off but this one is so stubborn uh and it gives me hard time but we got it off [Music] hi so here i got the new hardware i will be attaching at the end and now i'm going to check if these holes are matching the existing one and actually it's a perfect match so i don't have to close this one it makes everything much easier now that i have surf prep i can just send inside today is a rainy day and without surf prep there was no sanding outside on days like this i'm going to send this and i'm going to use 120 paper i prefer 80 but i'm out of 80 so i'm i'll just have to go with 120. [Music] [Music] [Music] so now that i'm done sanding i'm going to clean it with tsp substitute cleaner from cut cutter and i'm going to let it dry overnight and tomorrow i'll come back and start painting do the fun stuff so the drawers have this stain from the hardware it's a hardware stain and i sanded it but it's still there so i asked on instagram how can i fix this and a lot of people told me i shall just mix water with bar bar keepers friend and make a paste and put it on and let's see what happens [Music] [Music] [Music] okay [Music] [Music] you have a shoe from your daddy is that your shoe oh my goodness where did you get that shoe my original plan for this sanded wood was to bleach it i was planning to take it outside and just apply a couple coats of bleach to neutralize the yellow tones but that is going to take a lot of hours and to avoid all of that i'm simply going to do a whitewash technique and here i got beverly cashew color which is a creamy color i'm going to pour some into this little container i'm going to get my brush make it wet completely dip it in paint and spread all over the surface and then i'm going to wipe it with a cloth so i got my wet brush i'm going to get a little bit pain there a little bit more water and now i'm going to start spreading it [Music] always go with the grain when you do any kind of wash [Music] now that i have covered the surface completely i'm going to get my brush wet and i'm going to go all over so that way everything is even and nice [Music] here i got a cloth a dry cloth and i'm going to start wiping everything i usually start with the edges first here us crazy but things [Music] so my wash is here lighter so i'm going to put some more [Music] here you can see the difference between uh wash and not wash it's much has more yellow tones so this is an easy way to get the bleach look which is so wanted right now everybody wants that bleach natural look so this is the easiest simplest way to do it and as you can see even though i did a wash you can still see these uh stains i think those are stains so i'm just not going to worry about it because i'm going to put a big handle and stencil it so nobody's going to notice but i couldn't get rid of it [Music] one thing i forgot when i was doing the prep work is to close these little holes from the nails on one door i did on one door and i forgot to do the outer door so i'm just going to use this dark walnut wood putty very little and that is going to dry fast just because you don't want those holes to show once you paint the piece it will be noticeable [Music] [Music] now we're going to paint finally i will be using waverly uh moss color which is sage green as i told you at the beginning of this video that's the color of 2021 so let's do a piece in that color i'm going to pour some into this little container just because it's hard to dip this brush into this little uh here i don't know what's called [Music] so this is actually a really pretty color now that i open it and i pour into this i can see how this is very pretty uh it looks different the packaging and the paint actually actual paint inside it looks totally different so yes this is very pretty i'm using zebra brush for smooth finish so we are just going to get a little bit and try to get a smooth and nice finish with [Music] [Music] this [Music] in case you paint over the white wash you will have to sand it and repeat the white wash process it's not the end of the world so if you uh can get the straight lines just tape it put the tape here tape here all around and you don't have to worry about that just don't get too much paint on your brush that's the secret [Music] [Music] [Music] even though i paint with the drawers on and that is because it's much easier for me to do this way then to take them off i still take all my drawers out and then i paint this area [Music] [Music] so for this curve here i couldn't get the straight line so i end up using a very little small detail brush [Music] so you can take your time doing this or you can take your time taping okay so i am now applying the second coat the first one is dry on the right side dried faster obviously because i started here i'm going to apply second coat and that will be it for the solid coverage as you can see this color has great coverage actually beverly has a great coverage uh any color of everly so once i'm done with the second coat i'm going to do some stenciling and then we're going to let all this dry overnight and tomorrow we will come back and put protection and the hardware and we will be done [Music] [Music] now we're going to stencil the drawers indoors and i'm using this redesign with prima stencil it's called eastern abstract i will be using the same sage green color and i will be using a stenciling brush which i never use i always use a roller or a regular brush so i'm going to experiment and see how i like so i actually kind of got rid of the stains i think if i was to put another coat of white wash i think that will all uh level out it will look even better so actually this is great we're going to stencil actually i really love stenciling stenciling is amazing you can take your furniture to the next level with just stencil like you don't have to be some crazy artist we're going to place this here and it's actually matching perfectly i'm going to put this a little down more like that all right you're gonna get some and when using these brushes you're supposed to dub i think so i hope so [Music] let me be honest i don't know but i don't want so much paint on when i see you my heart starts racing so so far what i think about this stenciling brush is that it's pretty easy but i feel like it will go much faster if i was using the ruler [Music] it's always a good day when your stencil turned out beautiful and gorgeous i'm going to tape this because it's just going to be much easier sometimes i just hold my stencils and that's fine you're risking of messing up a whole design and also eventually your muscles are burning it's not that easy as it looks so it's much easier if you just tape everything that way you're playing safe i still kind of hold it like this because i don't want any gaps gaps are the ones that give you a bleed through so i'm still holding it but i'm not like pressing so hard it's just like a soft holding [Music] as soon as i'm done with the stenciling i'm going to take my stencil to the bathtub and soak it in the warm water with a murphy oil soap and everything is going to come out easily be by [Music] i need somebody [Music] give me somebody somebody okay so we're here on the third day of this project and today i'm going to put protection and put the hardware and we will be all done i'm using a polyurethane uh matte finish because i like matte look and i show you at the beginning of this video uh the hardware i'm using these cup pulls i already tried one over there to see how it's going to look i have to remove that uh so i can put protection i'm going to use that and for the doors i'm using this little modern uh hardware i got at uh amazon as well amazon is my place to go um for hardware lately or tg max but you can find really nice hardware on amazon i was about to put protection and then i did notice cracking on here and that usually happened that tells me that i missed that spot and there was a some kind of buildups under and i uh probably miss that area so to fix this problem i'm going to have to apply a primer witch luck over it uh i tried before just a spring shellac but it didn't work so the best way to fix this is uh attached uh put a little bit of primary shellac let it dry and paint over it and it will be just fine and they didn't have any at home depot i don't know why but this is more than enough to fix the problem i'm just going to go over this this dries fast so i can just keep on moving but i will have to let it dry so now i'm going to let this dry and then i'm going to have to put two coats on this door because just painting over this it's going to uh not look even so i have to now paint all over this area two coats to uh cover this primer so i'm just going to leave this dry now and while that dry drying i'm going to go and apply protection all over except this door the collar will become more milky as you're stirring and i really love this production it's really good maybe some of you know i like to keep one brush just for protection and this is the only one i have at the moment and here it is the sage green bleached modern buffet [Music] [Music] hey [Music] we're all done it took me three days three working days to finish this piece start to finish we ran into a little problem and you saw how i fixed it uh i think this piece looks gorgeous fresh modernized and i just love it so much i really hope you like this video if you did give me a thumbs up leave a comment below and subscribe if you haven't already i will see you next friday when i will be bringing you new project and more ideas bye guys you
