Braves @ Cardinals 8/1/01 (Kile beats Maddux, McGwire Homers to tie Killebrew)

Louis the Cardinals are looking for a big attack from Big Mac but the task is daunting tonight it's Greg Maddux on the hill for the Atlanta Braves it's hard to get more consistent and more dominant than in the Maddox mode his last loss may 30th last walk June 20th Chipper Jones of the rest of the Braves have made their move they lead the East by three the Redbirds need to move in the central and they're hoping Mark McGwire gives them a big blast one that will make history tonight on Wednesday night baseball [Music] welcome to st. Louis Busch Stadium as the homestanding st. Louis Cardinals take on the Annelise leading Atlanta Braves the Braves starting to put a little distance now between them in the Phillies as they lead by three going into this evening's play the Cardinals won the NL Central last year have some work to do there goes to about 500 and find themselves in third and a half behind the division leading Chicago Cubs hello once again everybody I'm Chris Berman so glad you'd be with us here on Wednesday night baseball but this just in we're in the heartland it's August 1st it's hot it's about a four shirt three schmutz rag day about 96 degrees and the only thing hotter than the temperature now in st. Louis officially 96 degrees 85% humidity thank god it's grass are not a sport welcome to the heartland in the summer Atlanta feels right at home in this brother this is young Marcus Giles who had certainly made a name for himself as last week clubbing a couple of homeruns hitting a 288 younger brother of Brian Giles of the Pittsburgh Pirates five foot eight little spark plug and frankly the Braves love the way he and Mark DeRozan who was the shortstop have been playing during all the injuries that Greg Maddux was telling me yesterday that those two kids play hard up the middle before Sanchez was acquired and he said when they play hard and they do things right it's easy to pull for [Applause] slow bounder to short Edgar rentería over the Mark McGwire and the hustlin Giles is out and this is the way the Cardinals line up for Tony LaRussa defensively and it is a difficult left field to play it anytime for Albert pools let's not forget he came up as a third baseman they taught him to play first base in the Fall League he didn't start playing the outfield until spring training when JD drew got hurt he was playing right field now he's out there in a very difficult Sun left field and Albert telling me before tonight's game he doesn't feel comfortable wearing glasses he never got used to that so he's basically on his own with that son BJ surhoff who's played a few positions himself deep to right field and that's JD Drew who missed 35 games with a broken hand came back last night singled early hit a two-run triple wait and the Cardinals could not welcome him back any quicker so with him there Ray Lankford missing with the club an excused absence more about that little later you talk about where a few also playing Bellanca with bird the cat becomes the odd man out a little bit in this situation with drew back never an odd man out is Chipper Jones [Applause] Kyle was in there for a strike so getting ahead of hitters chipper you know his power is much more and always has been from this side of the plate the left side continue that bed of pools there's the Sun field you talked about and that's going to be it doubled at least it's going to be a double just lost it in the Sun you called it suck if he had glasses on he would have an opportunity to shade himself and possibly pick this baseball up but what happens I was out there in left field before the game the ball goes up through the Sun that you're looking at now once it gets high enough albert fools could finally pick it up but by then it was too late for him to get to that ball and just like it does as it goes up when it comes back down it comes through that same glare right there he gave up on it had no idea where it was going to land by then it's too late and Chipper Jones Rafael Furcal and killed me oh Barris up the middle those two guys both got hurt out for the year eventually varus was released ray Sanchez the best defensive shortstop in baseball the last two years and we should say the catcher as he is in most every one of Madison starts and Paul Bako Fernando V near going inside out in that school that just foul into the Sun field down left but how about a nice job you know what gonna be Greg Madison personal you think you might stay around a while he had that job I asked Greg about that yesterday I said what's so special about Paul Bako he said he knows the game plan might change which mean they have a plan going into the ball game they're gonna pitch a guy a certain way with nobody on they're gonna pitch them differently with runners in scoring position but that might change depending on whether Maddux has the feel for a certain pitch depending on whether a hitter moves in the batter's box or not Baco very aware of all of those things Baco getting the opportunity to to the lengthy rehab out all year long and Perez Baco coming over the middle of last year being in shops about this time for the Cardinal dugout different-looking well that's a much different looking Cardinal lineup but it is with JD druid ray lankford thought he was traded to San Diego a complained of a lack of respect for a guy that's been here over a decade clean out his locker the trade did not happen at the deadline he's been excused for a couple days to quote get his head together so he is not with the club but there's the name you won't see and JD drew his back meanwhile what's new Pina strikes out to start the game against Greg Maddux oh good realizing what happened on the previous pitch the pitch before this changeup here Fernando venya started to cheat he pulled the ball foul down the first base line Maddux realizes that he thinks he's going to come in Greg gives him a little extra motion as if to say I'm gonna pump up and really let this fastball go he puts the baseball back in his hand it's a changeup it's the first out this is Placido Polanco who in addition to be moving around a lot in positions like Albert fools has really been according to the manager Tony LaRussa I had a nice chat with before the game maybe not maybe their most consistent productive offensive player this year now drew was but he missed a month so he goes you know I withdrew back and right and then where do I play pool Polanco said if I play two balls a third that puts Polanco on the bench I'm not very smart he could play short could Polanco if something happened to Renteria Tony's convinced of Renteria the shortstop having his first real down offensive year in the bigs he's convinced he'll have a good last couple of months so that's really what the thinking is for st. tonight and then very early and his next start would have the national league record well if he's gonna make a mistake this would be a situation where it would happen if you were to walk a guy or leave another ball over the heart of the plate the leadoff man he was able to retire on a line drive but now all of a sudden he's got a man on first he's got a guy with speed he's got to get a little bit quicker to home and when you do that when you go to the little slide step you're gonna lose a little bit of velocity your locations gonna suffer a little bit and even the great Greg Maddux could make a mistake although now he's ahead of Renteria 1 & 2 retention gets divided a little bit we've already seen throw to first twice if you were facing the other teams number four or five starter we wouldn't be so concerned about a stolen base there alright you're there with one out if I get two outs before you get a base it you're not gonna score a run but when you're facing the other teams
