if you would turn in your Bible to the Book of Amos chapter 5 and as you're turning there let me remind you of a few things first of all we're in the third section of the book which is actually three sermons and these three sermons Amos is trying to convince the Israelites that what he has prophesied against them will actually come to pass because they just didn't believe it and the reason they didn't believe it was because they were God's chosen people so in their mind they were safe God would never bring judgment on them the Gentiles in the pagans yes but not God's chosen people or at least that's what they thought and people were guilty of that here in America in our mind we're safe God would never bring judgment upon America because we're a Christian nation China maybe Russia yes but not America or so we think but that's exactly what Israel thought so to convince them that what God was going to bring judgment upon them Amos preached three sermons now we're halfway through the third sermon which takes up two chapters chapter five in Chapter six tonight we're going to finish chapter five and we're going to pick up where we left off which is verse 20 so turn to Amos chapter five and let's read verses 21 through 27 and in doing this we'll finish chapter 5 we still have to go into chapter 6 because all of chapter 6 is part of this third sermon but here is verses 21 through 27 I hate all of your show and pretense the hypocrisy of your religious festivals and solemn assemblies I will not accept your burnt offerings and grain offerings I won't even notice all your choice peace offerings away with your noisy hymns of praise I will not listen to the music of your hearts I've heard people say see you're not supposed to have loud praise and worship do you see that away with your noisy hymns nevermind okay that's just me I will not listen to the music of your harps instead I want to see a mighty flood of justice and endless River of righteous living was it to me you were bringing sacrifices and offerings during the 40 years in the wilderness Israel no you served your pagan gods Sukkoth your king God and kai Wan your star God the images that you made for yourselves so I will send you into exile to a land east of Damascus it's the Lord whose name is the god of heavens armies now those of you who are familiar with the writings of the Prophet know that normally the Prophet will spell out what a nation is guilty of and then it will pronounce punishment upon them but in this sermon amos tuss things a little bit differently he starts with the punishment and then he tells them what they're guilty of in verses 18 through 20 amos toed israel that the day of the lord was coming and it would be a time of punishment for them not a time of blessing it would be a time of darkness not a time of light it would be a time of evil and not good and then he dropped a bombshell on them and verses 21 through 24 telling them that God had rejected their worship of him then in verses 25 and 26 god accused them of committing the very same sins as their fathers in other words he accused them of making the very same mistakes that their parents had made so instead of learning from their mistakes they were repeating their mistakes and then finally in verse number 27 Amos restated what was going to happen to them on the day on the great day of the Lord in other words he stated what their punishment would be which would be they would be carried into captivity and that's an overview or summary of this part of the sermon so let's go through this section verse by verse starting in verses 21 through 23 here's what he said I hate all your show and pretense the hypocrisy of your religious festivals and solemn assemblies I will not accept your burnt offerings and grain offerings I won't ever even notice all your choice peace offerings away with your noisy hymns of praise I will not listen to the music of your hearts so what were they guilty of in God's eyes well they were guilty of hypocrisy in other words they were acting like they were faithful Jews worshipping God the way they were supposed to obeying the Mosaic law but they weren't worshipping God the way they were supposed to they were worshipping God the way they wanted to worship Him not the way that God told them - not according to the Mosaic law therefore God rejected their worship look back at verse 21 and I'll show you what I'm talking about he said I hate all your show on pretense the hypocrisy of your religious festivals and solemn assemblies now the word festivals is translated from the Hebrew word called kaga and it refers to the three Jewish feasts that every male was supposed to attend in Jerusalem every year turn to Deuteronomy chapter 16 verse 16 and I'll show you what I'm talking about three times in a year shall all my males appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose in the feast of unleavened bread and in the feast of weeks and in the Feast of Tabernacles and they shall not appear before the Lord empty and other words don't show up empty-handed you know what you're supposed to bring when you come to these three feasts so you had three feasts they were supposed to attend the feast of unleavened bread which also included Passover and firstfruits in fact you need to understand the first feast is actually three feasts in 1 the Jews referred to it as the feast of unleavened bread because it took place over seven-day period but it also included the feast of Passover and also the feast of firstfruits then you had the feast of weeks or what we call Pentecost and last but not least the Feast of Tabernacles which also included the Feast of Trumpets and the feast of the great Day of Atonement so the 3rd feast was also 3 feast in 1 now what you'd understand the Bible were referred to these as three feasts but they're actually seven feast those numbers have special significance in God's kingdom we won't go into that significance because we don't have time to do that but I want you to understand there were three feasts they were supposed to go to and they were actually seven feast in all the first feast was three feasts in one and then in between the first and the last feast you had a middle feast which was the Feast of Pentecost or what they called the feast of weeks and then the last one of course was the feast of tabernacle that was three feasts in one also now the place God chose for them to celebrate these feast Jerusalem we've already covered that so I'll just give you two scriptures to confirm that and then we'll move on look at second chronicles chapter 6 verse 6 it says but now I have chosen Jerusalem as the place for my name to be honored now remember in Deuteronomy 16:16 it said that they were supposed to appear before the Lord thy God in the place he shall choose Jerusalem was the place he chose the place where his name was to be honored and that's what 2nd chronicles chapter 6 verse number 6 is saying before they came in the promised land God kept telling his people you're supposed to do this in the place I will choose and then later on he told them the place that I have chosen is Jerusalem now look in second chronicles chapter 12 verse 13 King Rehoboam firmly established himself in Jerusalem and continued to rule he was 41 years old when he became King and he reigned 17 years in Jerusalem the city the Lord had chosen from among all the tribes of Israel is the place to honor his name now why is that very important does anyone know good I'm gonna tell you why who was King Rehoboam king Rhea Boehm was the one who so foolishly split the kingdom now it really wasn't his fault it was really Solomon's fault because what Solomon had done God towed Solomon that I'm going to split the kingdom not in your lifetime but in your son's time and of course REO boom comes in and we all know the story Solomon had taxed the people greatly and they were so tired of the taxes they actually came to a son Rehoboam and said if you'e lighten the tax load that we will serve you faithfully and lowly all loyally all the days of our life and of course Rhea Boehm said what well let me take some counsel come back in three days and I'll tell you my answer so what does he do he goes and he asks the older people and the the wise counselors and they say yeah just loosen a little bit of the restrictions make it a little easier on that and they will be loyal to you the rest of their lives of course he went to his friends he says what are you thinking they so you tell him if you thought my dad was bad you wait for me and sure enough he took the advice of his friends and as a result of that Jeroboam and the ten northern tribes rebelled and Rhea Boehm came out to fight famine he realized I'm not gonna be able to win so he just gave it up and from that time on the Kingdom of Israel was split into the ten northern tribes and the two southern tribes the ten northern tribes took the name Israel the two southern tribes took the name Judah but here's the interesting thing here it tells us in the time of Rio Boehm that even though the kingdom of split and this is what people don't don't see Jerusalem was still the city that everyone was supposed to go to to worship notice the last part of second chronicles 1213 it says well let's just read it all again King Rehoboam firmly established himself in Jerusalem and continued to rule he was 41 years old when he became King and he reigned 17 years in Jerusalem and then it says this the city the Lord had chosen from among all the tribes not just the two southern tribes all the tribes and that includes you the ten northern tribes that have split that have rebelled that have gone your own way and made your own Kingdom you need to understand Jerusalem is the city the Lord had chosen from among all the tribes of Israel as the place to honor his name so even though they had Redell and split from the kingdom they were still expected by God to go to Jerusalem to worship in the temple and to go to Jerusalem to keep the feast they were not to do it anywhere else Jerusalem was the city and that's why that's significant so every man was supposed to go to Jerusalem three times a year to celebrate these three feasts and that's what Amos was referring to in verse 21 when he said God hates the hypocrisy of your festivals that word festivals is translated from the Hebrew word cog and it refers to those three feast the feast of unleavened bread the feast of Pentecost and the Feast of Tabernacles now why did God accuse them of hypocrisy well first of all they weren't celebrating these fee in Jerusalem instead they were celebrating them in Bethel and or Dan depending upon where they lived you see when Jeroboam made those two golden calves he placed one in Bethel which was in the south and one in Dan which was in the north and that's where they went to keep these feast secondly they weren't worshipping Yahweh they were worshipping these golden calves which is idolatry look at first Kings chapter 12 verses 26 through 30 and I'll show you what I'm talking about Jeroboam thought to himself unless I'm careful the kingdom will return to the dynasty of David so at the time the kingdom split King Jeroboam got scared and thought what if they go back to Jerusalem and start worshiping they're gonna feel bad about splitting and guess what they're gonna want to do they're going to want to reunite with the kingdom of David and I'm gonna lose my kingdom so notice what he said when these people go to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices at the temple of the Lord they will again give their allegiance to King Rehoboam of Judah they will kill me and make him their king instead in other words they're gonna want to reunite so on the advice of his counselors the King made two golden calves he said to the people it is too much trouble for you to worship in Jerusalem it doesn't matter what the Mosaic law says it doesn't matter the city that God chose it doesn't matter what his command say he said it's too much trouble to worship in Jerusalem look Israel these are the gods who brought you out of Egypt he placed these calf idols in Bethel and Dan at either end of his kingdom one was placed in the north and one was placed in the south of the kingdom but this became a great sin for the people worshiped the idols these are idols and travelling as far as Dan to worship the one there so Jeroboam made two titles he set one up in Bethel and one in Dan and that's what the people worship which is a violation of the first and second commandments of the ten commandments they weren't supposed to worship any gods before Yahweh which is the first commandment and they weren't supposed to make any graven images or idols which is the second commandment so what they were doing was a clear violation of the fir two commandments now think about this good lord they had just started their own nation and before they even got started they'd already broken the first two commandments of the Ten Commandments yeah how do you get off to a worse start than that from the very beginning of their kingdom they broke the first two commandments and last but not least they weren't celebrating the Feast at the appropriate times you see in Leviticus chapter 3 the Israelites were told to celebrate these three feasts on specific dates in fact if you want to know more about the feasts just go to Leviticus chapter 23 because the entire chapter is about these feast but they were toed in Leviticus chapter 23 to celebrate these three feasts on specific dates on the 14th day of Nisan they were supposed to observe the feast of Passover now again you would slay this lamb then you would take it out and you would roast it but normally you didn't eat on it till the Sun went down which meant because Jews reckoned a day from sundown to sundown so if they killed this lamb in the middle of the day on the 14th and then they started roasting it it wouldn't be time to eat until the Sun went down so now they're on the 15th day which was which is when the feast of unleavened bread begins so they actually ate the feast of Passover on the day of unleavened bread that's why the Jews referred to it as the feast of unleavened bread instead of the feast of Passover did you know that anyways on the fourteenth day of Nisan they were supposed to observe the feast of Passover you'll find that in Leviticus 23 verse number five fifty days after the feast of firstfruits they were supposed to observe the feast of weeks or what we call Pentecost you'll find that Leviticus chapter 23 verse 16 and on the first of Tishri which is the seventh Hebrew month they were to observe the Great Day of Atonement and the Feast of Tabernacles began on the fifteenth day of Tishri and if you want to know about that just read Leviticus chapter 23 so as you can see the Israelites were told to celebrate these three feast on specific dates but they didn't do it instead when they split from the kingdom they made up their own feast in the end their own time in which they would keep it turn with me if you would to first Kings chapter 12 verses 32 and 33 and I'll show you what I'm talking about and Jeroboam instituted a religious festival in Bethel now that word festival is the Hebrew word cog and what does it mean it means feast so he instituted his own feast it's not God's feast it's a feast that he's instituted and I'll notice this held on the 15th day of the eighth month no feast was supposed to be held on the eighth month month the Feast of Tabernacles the last three feasts were supposed to be observed in the seventh month which is the month of Tishri so he's just making up his own time and notice what it says held on the 15th day of the eighth month in imitation of the annual festival of shelters in Judah there at Bethel he offered he himself offered sacrifices to the calves he had made and he had pointed priest for the pagan shrines he had made so on the 15th day of the eighth month a David he himself had designated and that's put in there for a reason to let you know that God did not designate it he designated it Jeroboam offered sacrifices on the altar at Bethel he instituted a religious festival for Israel and he went up to the altar to burn incense so as you can see their religion was a sham and God hated it and he despised their hypocrisy you see they were acting as if they were good obedient Jews and worshiping Yahweh at the way that they were supposed to in other words according to the Mosaic law when in reality they were nothing more than idol worshippers with a man-made religion now look at verse 22 Amos chapter 5 I hate all your show and pretense the hypocrisy of your religious festivals and solemn assemblies I will not accept this is God speaking through Amos I will not accept your burnt offerings and grain offerings I won't even notice all of your peace your choice peace offerings now does everyone know what a burnt offering is well if you if you don't let me explain a few things about the burnt offering the burnt offering is the very first sacrificial offering that's mentioned in the Book of Leviticus and it's the first one mentioned because it's the most important sacrificial offering you see it is the only sacrifice that belonged completely to God in other words no portion of it was ever consumed by the priest or by the worshiper himself remember usually the priest would get a portion of what animal whatever animal was sacrificed to God but not with the burnt offering every bit of it was consumed upon the altar the priest didn't get a portion of it the worshiper didn't get a portion of it every bit of it was burned on the altar in fact the Jews called it get this a Holocaust offering because everything goes up in smoke you see the Hebrew word hula means all and cost means smoke so it's an offering where everything goes up in smoke because all of it is burned on the altar to God in fact it was the Jews in the German concentration camps during World War two that called the extermination of the Jews the Holocaust did you know that if you ever want to know where that came from let me explain where that word came from in the concentration camps especially in the camps that they had the crematoriums the rabbi's would look up for me they would see these big chimneys and they would see the smoke going up and the smoke was coming from the crematoriums of the Jews that had been killed in the gas chambers and what they were doing was cremating them and when the rabbis looked up and they saw this smoke coming up from the cremation of all of these innocent Jews had been killed in the gas chambers they referred to it as a Holocaust a burnt offering to God in fact their heart was broken in fact many of them lost their faith because this is what they said they said God we're your chosen people we're your chosen people and yet we're being killed and cremated and that's our offering to you are you pleased with it and they were actually saying that because they were angry at God now I will say this we're not Calvinists I don't believe that everything that happens is God's will I don't believe when people are murdered that's God's will I don't believe when people die of cancer that's God's will the Bible doesn't teach that fact you've got to have a certain kind of twisted 'no Stubbe leave that god's that way the Bible is very clear that the reason that things like that happen is because we live in a sinful world but here's what Roman says Roman says all things work for the best for those who love the Lord and are called according to his purpose it doesn't say everything is his will it just says that God can use things even bad things for his glory he didn't cause it to happen that wasn't his will for it to happen but good things can come out of it for those who trust him and I'll be honest with you Israel would not be a nation today had it not been for the Holocaust let me tell you what took place our American soldiers liberated those camps and when they came in and they saw these skeletons and they saw what they did it's because America stood up against all the other nations and when they gave the vote they swayed everything in Israel became a nation but it's because of what our soldiers and leaders saw in those camps but that's where that word Holocaust comes from but let's get back to the burnt offering now because all of the burnt offering was consumed on the altar it signified a complete surrender to God and this was considered to be the one essential offering that had to be made to God of all the other offerings this is the one essential offering that has to be made to God so it was offered every morning and evening in the temple before any of the other sacrifices started this was the one that they would make and when the temple was ready to shut to closed and shut down this was the last one I made it was also offered at the beginning and closing of each and every Festa or feast and it was also the basic sacrifice that a person made when he was surrendering his life to God along with his will now the main purpose of this sacrifice was to make an atonement so the worshiper would lay his hands upon the head of the animal signifying that the animal was dying the Charis lee for him in other words in his place and his guilt was transferred to the animal by the laying on of his hands now while his hands were on the animal the priests would cut its throat and it would catch the blood in the bow in a bowl and then he would throw the blood on the side of the altar as a public witness that a various sac a vicarious sacrifice had been made because the life of the flesh is in the blood according to Leviticus chapter 17 so it signified life for life then the person would skin the animal he would cut it into pieces you'll find that Leviticus chapter 1 verse 6 and verse 12 and then the priest would take all of the parts of the animal and place it on the altar according to Leviticus chapter 1 verses 7 through 13 now as I said the main purpose of the burnt offering was to make an atonement for the person look at Leviticus chapter 1 verse 4 and I'll show you what I'm talking about this is the first chapter it's the very first sacrificial offering that's mentioned because it's the most important notice what it says and he should put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering and it should be accepted for him to make an atonement for him so through the burnt offering an atonement was made which meant that the wrath of God had been appeased so this was a propitiation and the person was now reconciled to God so now there's no more enmity between God and that person instead that person is reconciled to God in fact I want you to notice how the NLT translates a little bit of kiss chapter 1 verse 4 here's how it translates that verse lay your hand on the animal's head and the Lord will accept its death in your place to purify you making you right with him who's him God now of course Jesus was our burnt offering when he offered himself as a vicarious sacrifice in fact the reason he was our burnt offering is because his soul went to hell to pay the price his soul was offered on the altar to God to pay the penalty for our sins he was a propitiation not just for our sins as first John tells us but for the sins of the whole world so he was a burnt offering but my point is this the burnt offering had two purposes if you're taking notes write this down the first purpose was to make an atonement for our sin there by making us right with God the second purpose was to show that you were committing yourself to God now people this is interesting because what do you have to do to be saved you have to believe that Jesus died for your sins he was the propitiation he was your burnt offering and you have to make him Lord of your life so the second purpose was that you were showing that you were committing yourself to God in other words just as everything was given to God on the altar you were making the commitment to give every part of your being to God you are completely surrendering yourself in your will to God so even in the Old Testament you had to give this burnt offering to make an atonement for your sin but it also you had to give it to show that you were surrendering your will and making him Lord of your life so that was the two purposes of a burnt offering but according to Amos God rejected their burnt offering he didn't accept it because if they were truly surrendering to him they would obey His Word and they wouldn't be committing idolatry or making up their own religion so no he would not accept their burnt offerings or any of their other sacrificial offerings people let me just tell you something right up front there's only one way to heaven and it's God's Way it doesn't matter what our culture tells us about we need to be diverse so you know we need to be open to all of these other religions you know one religions not greater than the other let me just tell you right up front there's only one way to go to heaven and see the Israelites thought when they split and the ten northern tribes went and formed their own kingdom that they could make up their own religion that they could read the Mosaic law and say well you know we don't want to do it that way we're doing it this way and let me tell you what God told them I don't accept that at all that's hypocrisy so he didn't accept it look back at verse 22 you'll see what I'm talking about says I will not accept your burnt offerings and grain offerings I won't even notice all of your choice peace offerings listen to me surrendering to God means doing things his way not your way and if you don't do it his way he won't accept your burnt offering or any of your other sacrifices and that's what he's telling Israel you know we're a little bit different here we teach the lordship salvation I've told people that I wasn't saved till I was 20 but I want you to understand I said the sinner's prayer when I was a little boy and I said many times baptized over three times but I'll tell you why I wasn't saved till I was 20 because I always wanted to do it my own way I was only accepting Jesus Christ so I could go to heaven not to make him Lord of my life when I was 20 years old I felt like the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said if you keep going you're gonna die and not just physical death he meant being separated from him and so I accepted Jesus Christ and made him Lord of my life people let me tell you you have to do it God's Way that's why a burnt offering is so important that's why he says I do not accept your burnt offering now look at verses 23 and 24 away with your noisy hymns of praise I will not listen to the music of your harps instead I want to see a mighty flood of justice an endless River of righteous living now what most of us don't realize is that music was a part of the worship in the temple if you remember in first chronicles chapter 25 David had 288 professional musicians that were divided into 24 groups that was twelve musicians in each group and they played during the hours that the temple was and you also had Levites who sang as part of the worship at the temple look at first chronicles chapter 9 verse 33 and you'll see what I'm talking about now these are the singers not musicians and first chronicles chapter 25 just go back and read that you'll find out he had musicians but he also had singers now these are the singers head of father's households of the Levites who lived in the chambers of the temple free from other services Wow for they were engaged in their work day and night now didn't mean that at night they would come in and do it it means that whenever there was a feast or whenever they were supposed to have any type of worship there was always music and there was always singers well Jeroboam in the north in northern Israel copied what Judah did and they had musicians and singers worshiping at their false temples and Bethel and Dan but God hated it and he refused to listen to it look at verses 23 and 24 again away with your noisy hymns of praise I will not listen to the music of your harps instead I want to see a mighty flood of jeslis justice an endless River of righteous living in other words if you're not living righteously if you're not being just gotta listen to your singing you know there's different churches that have different models open doors open hearts open minds you know they're showing that we need diversity we accept homosexuality weeks that transgenderism we accept all of these things well according to God that's not living righteously if we don't live righteously he doesn't accept our praises in our worship we have to come to him with a clean heart and clean hands I don't say that in a way that is mean or bitter God loves all homosexuals but we need to understand that you either do it God's Way or you're not accepted and that's the first thing we have to learn because if we don't we don't recognize that we have saying that we need Jesus we need Jesus people he wanted them to repeat and get things right with with him and with others you see God wants true worship in obedience to his word and he also wants justice on this earth with us living righteously and in harmony with each other now here's what's interesting about this passage of Scripture there wasn't anything about their worship that God accepted let me say that again there wasn't anything about their worship that got accepted he didn't accept their feast he didn't accept their sacrifices and he didn't accept their price I didn't matter how good the singing was it doesn't didn't matter how good the musicians were he didn't accept it so there wasn't a thing in the way they worshiped that God accepted or was pleased with which is a lesson for us and the lesson is this if you're taking notes write this down he that worships God must worship Him in spirit and in truth in spirit means in faith you see when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior the spirit immerses us into the body of Christ and we're joined to him and we become one spirit so we're crucified with Christ nevertheless we live and we died with Christ we descended into hell with him because we're joined and were one spirit so Jesus pays for all my sins and when all of my sins were paid for God raises him from the dead I'm in him so when he is raised I'm born again I'm regenerated and the same spirit that raised Christ from the dead now dwells within me and I'm supposed to walk in the spirit so he that worships God must worship Him in spirit by faith is what that means but then it goes further was also worship him in truth jesus said God sanctify them with truth thy Word is truth God's Word is truth it's not enough to have faith we also have to worship Him according to what His Word says that's the lesson for us now let's look at verses 25 and 26 was it to me you were bringing sacrifices and offerings during the 40 years in the wilderness Israel no you served your pagan gods sokka's your King God and Kai won your star God the images you made for yourself now as I said before Israel was committing the very same sense as their fathers so it was a pattern of behavior that was being repeated over and over again and it's kind of sad because you see this in human nature it's almost as if the sins of the father keep getting passed down from generation to generation but they were committing the very same sins as their father in other words instead of learning from the mistakes of their parents they were making the very same mistakes their parents had made when Moses was up on the mountain of God Aaron made guess this guess what a golden calf and what did he proclaim he proclaim this this is the gods that brought you out of Egypt look at Exodus chapter 32 verse 4 and you see what I'm talking about then Aaron took the gold melted it down and molded it into the shape of a calf when the people saw it they exclaimed Oh Israel these are the gods who brought you out of the land of Egypt now notice that these are the gods that brought you out of the land of Egypt here they are just starting as a nation and what's the very first thing they do they break the first two Commandments thou shalt have no other gods before me thou shalt not make any graven image isn't it interesting that as soon as Jeroboam starts a new nation they make the very same mistake and that's the very same thing though I want you understand that Jeroboam said when he made the golden calves look at first Kings chapter 12 verse 28 and I'll prove it to you notice what it says so on the advice of his counselors the King made two golden cats this is Jeroboam he said to the people it is too much trouble for you to worship look Israel these are the gods who brought you out of Egypt that's almost word-for-word what Aaron said so instead of learning from the mistakes of their fathers they were making the very same mistakes in repeating the pattern and that's what Amos was saying to them he was saying you're doing the very same thing you did this in the wilderness yeah now look at verse 27 so I will send you into exile to land east of Damascus as the Lord whose name is the god of heavens armies this was the punishment for them not being faithful to God in his word they would be conquered and they would be carried into captivity somewhere north and east of Damascus and of course that's exactly what happened what Amos prophesied came to pass but you see they didn't think it would happen to them just like America doesn't think that it will happen to us I'll be honest with you there's probably not a person here that really thinks that God's judgment is going to come upon us but I'm here to tell you it will come upon this unless we do what the Bible says to do unless we humble ourselves and pray and we repent as a nation and Christians truly become the salt and the light that they're supposed to does it mean that we're going to be made fun of yes does it mean that people are going to be upset with us yes does it mean we might be persecuted probably but I want you to understand as Christians that is our responsibility we do what others will not do that's what God wants
