Hi guys welcome back at Mikrotik Tutorial and this time we will continue to discuss QoS. Now is about Burst. What is actually Burst feature about? After we upload the video about the first QoS which discusses what QoS is there are many questions how to use can it be like that? before we go to QoS implementation before we exemplify in real terms we will discuss one of the features of the Mikrotik QoS There is Burst. For example we have a total bandwidth of 10Mbps and we have 10 clients then logically simple each client will get 1Mbps bandwidtrh. This condition is actually no problem, because everything is evenly divided. if all clients use Bandwidth simultaneously it will also not be a problem because it doesn't interfere with each other but for clients that use Bandwidth not too often he will still be able to access the maximum with 1Mbps even though there may still be available bandwidth which can be used but of course if there is a client who accesses the bandwidth used to download continuously we will keep this cllient to only be able to access up to 1Mbps so as not to disturb other clients sometimes the features that make it maximal The bandwidth that clients access can increase beyond the limit will be able to make the client feel that the bandwidth he gets is fast this is what is called the Burst feature in QoS on Mikrotik this is called Burst which can be used for allocate additional bandwidth above the max-limit to clients who do not use Bandwidth continuously here we will learn how to calculate it For example, there is a client that uses Bandwidth only for browsing. He just open the page for a moment and long time reading on one page which means Bandwidth is not used continuously. This client can feel the effects of the Burst feature so if we already have a max limit of 1Mbps we can allocate for clients that don't use maximum bandwidth all the time he can get burst up to 3Mbps for example or 5Mbps depending on our Burst count as an example of its use and this feature is very good for the experience of our users / clients so the client does not feel that the bandwidth received is slow / little and if we use the Burst feature we can set up to 5Mbps and for clients that use Bandwidth to download or continuous large access or using the maximal bandwidth all the time then the client will continue get 1Mbps max-limit we try to see through Winbox this burst feature is on simple queue and queue-tree the simple queue is on the General tab after determining the max-limit is parameter settings for Burst then the queue-tree also exists under parameter settings limit-at and max-limit by default the Burst is 0 That is, there is no burst. So if we don't configure anything Mikrotik routers will not give any burst. That was the concept of burst and examples of its use. Now we will discuss 3 main parameters for burst The first is burst-limit then burst-threshold and burst-time The three parameters that we will use and combine with max-limit to determine whether the client can get additional bandwidth as burst-limit or just to max-limit. From this explanation, we know that burst-limit will always be higher than max-limit So don't ever set the burst-limit lower then max-limit because it won't work. Because burst is an additional allocation after max-limit reached. Then, there is a burst-threshold, is the value used to compare whether the average usage is above the threshold or below it. For example, we specify a burst-threshold of 2 Mbps if the client has an average usage below 2 Mbps then the client can get bandwidth up to burst-limit But if the average is above the burst-threshold, then the client can only get a bandwidth of max-limit So, this burst-threshold will be used to calculate whether the client can rise to burst-limit or only up to max-limit Then there is one more thing called burst-time. Many Mikrotik users misunderstand, considers that burst-time is the time allowed to burst Forget that understanding because it's a big mistake. Burst-time is the time span the router uses to calculate the average. For example, for example 8 seconds burst, This means that the average usage is calculated in the last 8 seconds. Or if the burst-time is 16, then the average is calculated in the last 16 seconds. So, this burst-time has nothing to do with ... how long can the client burst. Burst-time is the time used to calculate the average to determine whether he is over the threshold, or above the threshold. so after we know the burst-time then burst-limit and burst-threshold The router will do an average calculation 16x during the burst-time so For example we set 16 seconds burst-time then the Router will do calculations every second, because router will do calculations 16 times. Because burst-time=16, then the calculation will be done every second. Now we will see an example. It will easier to understand when we see the example. Here is a diagram. We set max-limit=8mbps if there is no Burst then the client will always get maximum 8mbps traffic. Then there is a burst-threshold we set burst-threshold=10mbps then there is a burst and we set burst-limit=20mbps so 20Mbps for burst-limit burst-threshold of 10Mbps max-limit of 8Mbps. As shown in diagram, burst-threshold is higher then max-limit, and burst-limit is the highest. Then here we set a burst-time is 8 seconds. Now we will make a simulation to count every second. not like a router which will do calculation 16 times, we will count every second. Because the results will be the same For the first time the client accesses the network and haven't used bandwidth in the first time the client can get Bandwidth until the burst-limit Why? because the average usage is still 0 then the client can use bandwidth to burst-limit Client can get 20mbps bandwidth. because we calculate the average usage in the last 8 seconds before there was no traffic the count is 20 divided by 8 equal to 2.5 so the average bandwidth usage is 2.5Mbps in the first second then in the 2 second because 2.5Mbps is still lower from the burst-threshold we set 10Mbps then the client in the 2 second can still access use Bandwidth to 20Mbps burst-limit after that we calculate the average again average Bandwidth usage now 5Mbps from the result of a count of 40 divided by 8 then the third second the client can still access using Bandwidth to burst-limit and now the average is 7.5Mbps then we enter in the fourth second and still be able to access using Bandwidth until burst-limit of 20Mbps and the calculation of the average bandwidth usage now is 10Mbps previously we already set that burst-threshold is 10Mbps and average Bandwidth usage at the fourth second we get here is 10Mbps What does it mean? means that the client is now can only get Bandwidth access according to max-limit here we have set the 8Mbps limit so in the next second the client can only get Access bandwidth of 8Mbps it can't reach 20Mbps bursts anymore we will calculate the average usage continuously in the fifth second the average is 11Mbps because of the average usage still above the burst-threshold Bandwidth that can be accessed only up to max-limit with an average count of 12Mbps then in the seventh second The bandwidth that can be accessed is only up to a max limit of 8Mbps with the average usage now being 13Mbps in seconds to 8 clients might reduce usage he only accesses up to 4Mbps if we calculate the average usage here still above the burst-threshold then in the ninth second the client might reduce usage only up to 2Mbps and the average access count has decreased to below the max-limit and burst-threshold then in the tenth second the client for example accesses only up to 2Mbps if calculated the current usage average has dropped to 9Mbps because the average access is 9Mbps and the count is below the burst-threshold because before we were set burst-threshold of 10Mbps then the count after ten seconds the client can access using Bandwidth until the limit can access using Bandwidth until bursts and that is the client's choice in the example here client may still access under max-limit using 2Mbps Bandwidth so the average usage will continue to decline in the example count here in the 12th second the usage is still low in the 13th second, the usage is still low in the example here maybe the client wants to download something and on average the usage is still far below the burst-threshold and in the next second when the client requires Bandwidth then the client can access use bandwidth until bursts and on the count of average usage will definitely start going up again in the next second maybe the client still uses Bandwidth to burst then you can see the average usage starts to rise again and continuously using Bandwidth until the limit and this is done continuously if according to the calculation of the average Bandwidth usage in the 17th second 11Mbps and this number is above the burst-threshold and in the next second or at 18 seconds then the client cannot use Bandwidth to burst and can only access use Bandwidth to max-limit or in a matter of just 8Mbps calculation of average usage will continue if it counts the average usage under burst-threshold then the next second client can access use Bandwidth to Burts-limit and the count will continue like this so for clients who don't always access use large bandwidth then the client will be able to get Bandwidth to burst limit imagine if you subscribe to an ISP with a speed of 8Mbps and for example here can access using Bandwidth until a burst of 20Mbps this will make the experience very good for our client that the bandwidth we provide can be fast if used for small Bandwidth access like browsing and others this is one example or one of the features on Mikrotik which we can use to provide Bandwidth access above the max-limit namely the Burst feature actually there is one more feature on Mikrotik which we can use and the way it works is almost the same as Burst but the way the calculations are different let's look at the simple queue menu there is something called Bucket is on the Advanced tab there is an option for Bucket Size and by default a ratio of 0.1 is written then on the queue-tree menu there is also a Bucket here the default Bucket Size is also written 0.1 if we don't change the Bucket Size settings by default the Mikrotik Router provides settings value for Bucket Size is 0.1 how to use Bucket Size?
