don't let that happen I'm talking about go out there on the first plate and knock the crap out of now clean I talked about playing mean but I do not want dirty football but man that's what makes you different from those students out there you're tougher you're tougher and it's legal to get out there just don't get penalties offense now the first play of the game seven waggle z post I want it to look exactly like a run linemen when you get your assignment make it aggressive like you're really bucking for the run fall backs attack tailback tailback make a great fake and make them think you've got the ball quarterback let him see you give him the football and then hide it and get back and let's throw the Z Z Post now man I'm not doing that to loosen them up I want to touchdown I want a touchdown but if they do happen to play it at least we get that safety out of the ballgame then our square hands and everything I think it'll be pretty good later on in the game let's do a good job on that and get it huh it looks like a pass it's off slow this here just make you a good fake and just get that post here touchdown know about it I said oh about no just have a good time [Applause] next real good right but we get we won the toss we'll take the second half option right now if they want to receive then you fight with that wind's blowing we'll pick that way now if they win it will take will receive the football and then the second half will decide where that wind is so if they take the ball we get the choice then you want the wind on the kickoff if they are they win the toss and they say we would like to receive then you find it win yes I did that wind yeah won't it won't kick with the wind I know that's what I know it has it's changed you like it the first in the third quarter but if it's if I got if I got a kick off I never want to kick off into the wind yes so in 30 you want to get it out and get you a good start so it got to the point where you couldn't feel like he couldn't wait any longer something had to happen soon we were into the fourth quarter and the only guy that had the arm strong enough to possibly pull this thing out was chip Ferguson a freshman so it's kind of a desperation move and we put him in the ball game and he responded he responded he hit two passes in a row one for 68 or 70 yard touchdown pass got the momentum going and then our football team did the rest but even after that success I was still leery because that's not like having a whole ball game and playing 60 minutes of football that's going in on a couple of series and doing your thing and and responding well to it but at that time I think you could see the potential that this young man has [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] then I want you to play real clean but aggressive real clean but boy you're going I know I know what Auburn thinks they think they'll I'll hit those Seminoles they think that I'll hit those beach boys those guys from the beaches hell out hitting them you see so lets us be sure we out hit them now on the first play of the game show that guy what a tough day is gonna help hey man are you going where you want to go through this for 60 minutes because this is what you're gonna catch every now and let him have it now listen to me make Bo Jackson take himself out of the ballgame like he did against Tennessee the coaches didn't take him out he said coaches I'm not going back in my leg hurts well he might have said my leg smarts I'm not sure which one but he wouldn't go back now man make him take himself out again and I didn't go come easy he's got to know he's got to know that he's going through 60 minutes of hell if he stays out there now if we don't do that he can get us hey coach I called him hey what happened I called I you know and so that happened two or three times early in the game and enough to when you feel like it's gonna be a dogfight here and and we're not gonna win this game if we make a couple of critical mistakes you know we cannot afford the critical mistakes and so after a couple of series he was having trouble and he got hit one time he went back to past he ran and got hit you know anything get hit in the head hitting a chest but I imagine that shot in the chest shook his head a little bit you know and I think he became a little incoherent and dizzy and so the next time we got the ball he took us right down to the goal line and then made he called a play wrong again our formation and then he fumbled which he done never do he he don't learn that's not his thing fumbling and made a couple mistakes and I'm thinking to myself now here's a ball game where we're ahead 14 to 7 and and Danny cannot think clearly let's don't leave him in there and let us lose because he can't get his thinking together you know and that was that was a whole thing there and then and yet when you talk to Danny Danny is it got enough courage and enough pride that he don't think he's heard you know and then he's not and if Danny's hurt and he don't want to tell you because he don't want you to think he's not tough because he is tough he's a tough individual and but there's a time when you're better off letting us know well how do you really feel you know [Applause] are you okay there was a hell of a crucial play out there there are you sure you okay expand your mouth okay tell me what if we sure let your coach is all kind of turned the head and laughs OH which I used to do when I was in system C you're nearly ashamed to approach them with it and so I've stuck my name on it and said Toma coaches and the players if it don't work and I'm the guy that's to blame y'all don't have to take the blame for it so it fails you just say hats bound roots gets his plate at dummy put that thing in so we just started calling it that and so now then any time we use the term Baton Rouge ski or ruski our kids know that some kind of a play a gimmick type of a play to take advantage of something that the other teams doing that that if it backfires you look you look stupid you look like The Three Stooges if it don't work [Applause] what bad ruski where did it baby we can still win now keep out when you you or if you ate if you ate the wrong food you're out you're playing a game you someones trying to digest that food and actually takes away from you so they're trying to get just nothing it'll be touched Allen teams good so it's very important that they call plays fairly they're gonna miss some you know and so we're gonna stay on them we don't stay on them pretty good about they know they they happened and I don't know maybe and now getting back to what I was driving to we had approached our kids our staffs that we're not gonna drive Florida down their throat we're gonna mention them every night and we're gonna drive it down a throw because we think they bit too tight we think they're so doggone tight day that they've got to give the ballgames away you know so we're gonna stay let's try ballgame if they played anything other than their best you Florida played anything other than best we were gonna have to beat them and we were but they came out in Florida Florida had a they they remind me of our 1980 football team here at Florida State it was a fourth year of some we had some Andersons playing their senior year and we had some John elds and we had some Alonzo Johnson's planned their senior year and they had a lot of pride and they wouldn't lose either you know they refused to get beat hey hey let's make something happen you guys on the kickoff y'all get a chance to set the tone get out there reckless and wild you know how to get your name you let me tell you how to get get your name on TV take your body down on that opening kickoff and when a guy comes up the block you dive right over the top his head hurdle yourself another guy with a ball you know then something outstanding do something daring do something dangerous like I said just kind of people over at Clarke every now and then see how he's covered and kind of do like him I think that might do the job 60-minute football game now whatever happens or they don't mean a thing 60-minute football game they score first don't mean nothing we score first don't mean nothing you play over down like it's nothing nothing listen I told you I want to throw that football first play the game two tights are a freshman and I really wanted to see what he had so we gonna come out fire the football no matter what and see what he can do yet in many cases the finality of the chair of the drives that you had up and down the field wasn't there you satisfied with the 30 nothing score no but the penalties were we look like a team that's been off for about a month we're getting talented penalty penalty and stopping ourself a lot I think if we could if we can stop the poaching business I believe we can do all right you were scared with the use of this team that's what you said to me yesterday and I haven't seen very many freshman mistakes out there that's the key it would really help us next year if these kids could get a win tonight got a tough 30 minutes to go but it would really help us and leadership that you've given us mantle more tell you something ten years from now when you look back you'll remember that guy right there more than any other individual other than your daddy you'll game they could say well that's it but they had too much pride because their mamas and their daddies raised him right and I hope this leads us on to greater things we tied the second half of the Florida game we outscored in 14 to 10 and I think that is the beginning of a great things that are fixed now to Florida State football well the thing that excites me about Florida State University is that it is a relatively new school in the field of intercollegiate football and basketball there is no doubt about it when I was a kid there wasn't a Florida State University football team you know there wasn't a Florida State basketball team and yet as I was growing up in college I was able to compete against Florida State and saw that new young school down there growing I was up in Alabama but I you know Florida State was in Tallahassee and I was watching them grow and I felt like you could see big time written on Florida State and so being part of a university that again all of us that didn't have tradition yet but I think right now we're in the middle of it again I think the fact that some people are complaining about an 8-3 season tells you something about some tradition that's being built and butBut know it know it also that thirty or forty years from now I will have been on the ground floor of Florida State building some great tradition that's exciting to me that's very exciting to me and I hope I'm 56 years of age and I'm getting up to the age where you you start you know people start saying hi how many interviews can you think I've had lately where they said how much long can you go you know well boy I hope I can go longer where I can contribute to Florida State and yet I realize if we start going backwards with me then then we'll have to get somebody else younger to take it over but it's exciting to meet trying to try to build a tradition here I stay close to that line of scrimmage is hey or chill stay low where they keeps fine you stay low where they keep find you chill that's a chip that's good Casino look you can just imagine that safety back down there he can't see you if I just dropped back and raised up he sees the ball up I thought you know
