OFFICER: 4 Adam 11 foot bail. Foot bail, Foot bail. We're running in the middle of the freeway. Stop. [MUSIC - INNER CIRCLE, "BAD BOYS"] (SINGING) Bad boys. What you want. What you want. What you gonna do when Sheriff John Brown come for you? OFFICER: We were driving around East Oakland, and I noticed a car that had no front plate. I saw that it had a rear paper dealer plate, and I didn't see any type of temporary registration in the window. So I decided to make a traffic stop, and he decided to go out onto the street and flee. OFFICER: People OCD [INAUDIBLE]. DISPATCHER (ON RADIO): 10-4. [INAUDIBLE] OFFICER: We are now getting on to southbound 880. Traffic is going to be moderate on the freeway for right now. Speeds are 40 miles an hour, and we are entering the freeway. The time of the day we initiated the pursuit, it was rush hour traffic, 2 o'clock in the afternoon. When we got onto the freeway, driving on the shoulder, that's pretty dangerous. Before I tried to terminate the pursuit for public safety reasons, and he actually crashed into a civilian car. He hit something. He rear ended this car, and 4 Adam 11, his car is disabled here. He's pulling to the number 1 exit. He just TCed into the guardrail. Stand By-- DISPATCHER (ON RADIO): 1014, [INAUDIBLE].. OFFICER: Don't move! Stop! Stop! 4 Adam 11 foot bail. OFFICER: When he foot bailed and crossed over, we had the same type of traffic coming northbound at us when we were running down the freeway. He crossed four lanes of traffic and jumped into a drainage ditch. He got up onto the bank of the creek, and he decided to make an emergency call to his girlfriend. Put the phone down, or else you're going to get tased, dude! SUSPECT: Why? What am I-- OFFICER: Put it down! Stand up! Stand up! SUSPECT: I can't move my leg, bro. OFFICER: You better stand up. You were able to run from me. You better stand up. SUSPECT: I'm right here on the side of the freeway. OFFICER: Put the phone down! SUSPECT: Where am I going to go with the phone sir? OFFICER: Cover me. SUSPECT: I mean seriously I'm not going do nothing sir. OFFICER: The bad part is he actually hurt some people on the freeway when he crashed into the civilian vehicle. They both went to the hospital with neck and back injuries. From talking to him, I guess this probably wasn't the first time he actually ran from police. He was on probation for burglary. He flat out told me he ran because he knew he had a warrant. You knew we were behind you. You pulled in the gas station. I was on you the whole time, and then you decided-- you had ample opportunity to stop. SUSPECT: It hit me in the head, like you have a warrant. OFFICER: OK. Do you know by doing what you did, man, you put hella people in danger out here. There's actually a couple of crashes. There might be some people hurt because of what you just did out there. You feel me? SUSPECT: Don't say that. OFFICER: I'm serious. I get that you got a warrant, but now you just made things worse. I went talk to the girlfriend on the side of the freeway. I told her that we're going to tell her car. Obviously, I told her it had major damage. She was obviously very upset. I've been in quite a few pursuits here in Oakland. This is the first time where I've actually had one where the dude crashed in rush hour traffic. And just running across a freeway during rush-hour traffic, that is a nail-biting experience. WOMAN: I think you should take him he better be evaluated because he's had mental issues since kindergarten. MAN: Thank you, Mom. Thank you. I love you. [BLEEP] I love you. I want to do suicide by cop Stop right now. MAN: I'm going to do suicide by cop. OFFICER: Stop right now. MAN: I know you want to kill me, right? OFFICER: No, I do not. MAN: Yeah, you do.
