[Music] so blue sky they sure were in animation studio while their movies certainly haven't been as widely acclaimed as those from studios like pixar and dreamworks they also haven't been as critically hated to quite the extent that movies from a studio like illumination have and the main reason i think that is is because considering the fact that they've only released eight independent movies the range of style and quality across their output is astonishingly vast and as a result of that it's quite hard to judge this studio as a whole like if it weren't for the opening logos that play at the beginning of any movie i would have no idea that like robots ice age and the peanuts movie were all from the same studio but nonetheless they've released some films in the past that i think are pretty neat and as a whole i would say i like blue sky studios and so the day i heard by way of the sards on sardonicast that blue sky had been acquired and shut down by none other than the slimy soulless corporation we know as disney i knew i had to make a video about it and so as my final send-off to this perfectly average animation studio let's take a look back at the films they've made and rank them all from worst to best and the best part about all this is that i'll never have to update this list because you know [Music] now before i tell you which blue sky movie is my least favorite you should know that it was a very difficult toss-up between two of them rio 2 and horton hears a who on the one hand you have a bad movie adaptation of a property that i already liked but on the other hand you have a bad sequel to a property i already liked and i could not for the life of me pick which was worse but after much much consideration i came to a decision horton user who is ever so slightly worse so what i'm going to say next will sound off topic but i promise it's related i hate illumination i hate every single movie that they've made except for maybe the first despicable me their movies are among the most pandering stupid ugly and unfunny i've ever seen accepting those rendered in 24 hours on a literal toaster movies like rata toying and what's up and the reason i bring this up is because illumination has made not one but two animated films based on dr seuss books both of which sucked absolute cucumber so when i found out that blue sky who are not illumination by the way just in case you're having trouble keeping up had made a movie on horton hears a who i was hopeful that maybe just maybe it would be good just just good that's all i asked for i don't need it to be a masterpiece it's it's dr seuss for christ's sake all i prayed was for there finally to be a good animated dr seuss movie but not one minute into my first viewing my heart sank for to my utter utter dismay in the opening credits i saw a name i hoped i'd never see again chris [ __ ] melodrandi how the hell did this slow down no good flea bitten bum sniffin toilet drinker worm his way onto this project mr melodrandi by the way is the same person who produces the illumination movies [ __ ] you christopher i hope minions too the rise of groove flops and you become homeless earning change by the side of the road dancing in a minion suit to happy by pharrell williams so yeah horton hears the who isn't that good it could be because the idea was flawed in the first place the 3d animation detracts from the charm the storybook had and the screenwriters had no idea what they were doing but i feel much better simply blaming it on chris the first obvious thing that would make this movie bad is that it's a 90-minute movie based on a 50-page children's book so the writers would have to take some creative liberties to stretch the running timeout and that's the exact same problem both of the illumination ones have it's in those creative liberties that a potentially good movie idea gets turned into a piece of crap basically every scene that deviates from the plot of the storybook is just super weird the scenes with the who counsel are really weird the interactions between the kangaroo and her son and the pouch are really weird the scenes with that vulture were really weird basically anytime horton did anything was really weird i'm just gonna take the pop filter off for a second for this part this movie is just 80 minutes of filler but there was this one scene in particular that was super weird and had nothing to do with the story at all so horton's trying to cross this old rickety bridge and he's having a hard time doing it and at the same time the mayor of whoville who lives on the spec on the flower is getting a root canal so the whole scene is just this elephant shaking around a flower while the mayor tries to get a root canal that was the weirdest [ __ ] sentence i've ever said in my life and the dentist ends up accidentally injecting his arm with the anesthetic isn't that funny no nothing important happens while horton's crossing this bridge and nothing important happens as a result of the mayor's arm being all floppy this scene does nothing at all to progress the story it has no consequences and it's not funny it's just stupid at least it retains the same message as the storybook but it just doesn't feel genuine like the other dr seuss movie starring jim carrey which is my jam by the way but that's a story for another day but the one aspect of this movie that i really didn't like was the subplot about the mayor trying to bond with his son it doesn't make any sense basically the mayor only has one son jojo and he's in line to be the next mayor but jojo doesn't want to be the next mayor but the mayor doesn't listen to him which is a fine conflict on its own but in this movie it doesn't progress in any sort of way that is logical now if you recall in the book and tv movie there is a part during the climax where they're all making noise there's one guy in whoville not making noise and the mayor has to go up to him and tell him to do the yap thing well this movie's version of that moment and also the attempt to tie the mayor's subplot to the main plot is that he goes up to the observatory to find jojo but instead of not making noise he's got this whole noise making contraption that he's using which is the entire opposite point from the original and then after that the mayor is all proud of jojo and they live happily ever after i well i guess i guess they live happily ever after and the mayor stops pressuring jojo and everything but like they don't show anything after the climax so i don't know we'll never know i may not have explained that very well but you'll know what i mean if you've seen the movie i can't tell you how devastated i was that they didn't include the wickersham brothers song from the tv movie that was probably my favorite part as a kid the wickersham brothers were in it and i expected him to sing the song at any moment but they never did and it even almost had me with the emotional climax at the end until they broke out into a musical number out of nowhere i didn't even like the voice cast that much one thing you'll notice about blue skies movies is that every one of them features really big name actors playing the main characters jim carrey's style was i guess kind of funny to hear in animation but unfortunately that's all i heard jim carrey not horton the elephant who cares about all people no matter how small it's just jim carrey and i've never liked steve carell that much in anything so jojo what's uh what's shaking what's happening but even though this is the worst blue sky movie how does it stack up against illuminations dr seuss movies well it really hurts my precious ego to say this but i think the lorax is better than this there i said it uh look i can't believe that i actually just said illumination film is better than something else let's hurry up and move on to the next one before i puke [Music] rio welcome to the jungle or as it's colloquially called rio 2 is the worst sequel i have ever watched to a movie that i liked no hyperbole no exaggeration whatsoever this movie this [ __ ] movie now og's of the channel may remember that i've already made a video about why i hate rio 2. but i have since taken that video down because a i've thought about it and my views have shifted a lot and b it was just a really bad video trust me i'm doing you a favor by not letting you see it so i'm going to take full advantage of this opportunity to convince you exactly why rio 2 is such an infuriatingly awful travesty of entertainment let's begin shall we [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] now rio is actually a movie that i really like and i'll talk about that later but when i first discovered that there was a sequel to this movie that i really liked i immediately went and rented it on itunes and watched it on a plane ride back from a vacation to france now watching this movie on an ipad screen on an airplane may or may not have contributed to my dislike of rio 2 but regardless i find it to be completely insulting to everything that made rio great which again i'll talk about later so if we were to google rio 2 we would get this nice little description of the movie and if you look down here you you just you see it's kind of scanned down here you see eh oh yeah comedy comedy what's that what's that [ __ ] comedy who comedy this movie is so unfunny it's not even funny how not funny it is i don't think i even smiled once for the entire running time every single attempt and making you laugh just falls completely flat on its face and ends up being cringy instead the most egregious example of what i mean by this is the new characters they added i strongly dislike the new voice actors they got specifically kristin chenoweth and bruno mars it's just something i put together with my strength and my brawn hey hey everyone subscribe to jonah yeah you telling bruno it's just two actors acting like themselves for 90 minutes and i don't particularly like either of these actors at all and then there's andy garcia playing this grizzled army grunt type bird with a buzz cut and uh almost every time this movie tries to be funny it just rips itself completely away from the plot and makes you feel like you're watching something else like the talent show audition scene and that entire subplot was so dumb and completely pointless whenever the side characters from the first movie got involved it just didn't hit the same way here and the new side characters all got on my nerves the whole blue is a clumsy idiot joke that could have been funny in moderation was taken way too far so i think it's safe to say that nothing in the comedy department works at all every time i come if i gotta get it then i gotta go and then i gotta get it then they gotta blow and then i gotta show that any little thing about that they're gonna be doing cause it doesn't matter i'm done meanwhile the movie's attempts to create serious conflict also fall flat on their faces there are a total of five separate conflicts in this movie that i was able to identify and none of them work number one blue's conflict with andy garcia is that andy garcia hates humans and so he hates blue by association because i guess blue likes humans and he might betray betray him or something and so he confiscates all of his human stuff and yells at blue a lot and he tries to train him and i know somewhere they tried to give us some sort of reason to sympathize with this guy but if this is trying to be serious i sure can't take it that way like i don't understand why do you immediately hate him so much why doesn't jewel vouch for him it feels completely forced right off the bat number two blue's conflict with jewel is that jewel essentially forces him to fly halfway across the country to find more of their species in the jungle then gets mad at him when he wants to go home because he clearly doesn't enjoy living in the jungle i mean didn't he literally just move halfway across the world from minnesota to rio and now we're gonna do the i don't belong here thing again how could this be home i have done everything i can to fit in and help out but no matter what i do it's wrong you need to figure out what you want and maybe stop thinking about just yourself and start thinking about us what are you talking about because to me it kind of seems like you're the one who's only thinking about yourself here i just don't know why the main arc had to be with blue again i think it would have been great if the sequel focused more on jewel because the story is all about her finding her family how they could have done this i don't know but at least an arc with jewel would have been new number three blues conflict if you could call it that with nigel and his gang of forest animals is the most insanely weird thing i've ever seen first of all there's no way he survived getting shredded by a plane propeller in the first movie i'm sorry he's dead but secondly he's just straight up a worse character and antagonist here and it's just painful watching him try to stay relevant after his defeat in the first movie they really emphasize how he's gone even more crazy since then but all that does is make him less menacing funny when he says something that's supposed to be menacing funny i'll talk more about nigel later when i get to rio but the reason he works so well in the first movie is that on top of having this dramatic flair and wit he's an actual threat to our main characters but he's so unthreatening in this movie and so unimportant to this story and i guess it was the intention to make him more goofy but it just makes every scene he's in so lame he played his role and had a satisfying defeat already why did he need to come back and jermaine clement still does his darndest with the voice acting but the script he's given is just so weird uh yeah so so like i had this idea we could add this scene where nigel he like auditions for a talent show uh and he's he's he he performs a parody of i will survive sorry what how high are you right now extremely what do you think yeah [ __ ] it why not [Music] like seriously how am i supposed to feel about this character now is he supposed to be a threat is he supposed to be just comic relief is he supposed to be both whatever the case may be everything he does in this movie is just so unmemorable it's incredible how sharply he fell from one of my favorite movie villains ever in rio to one of my least favorite in rio 2. and the thing is there was no reason for him to be in the movie at all because guess what there's already a more menacing villain the logger boss the threat that they pose is enough i don't need to see 90 minutes of this frog getting moony eyed over this bird number four the bird's conflict with the humans takes the absolute most obvious and predictable route you could imagine of course after a movie where we thought that these two were the last of their species they pull a 180 on us like psych yeah remember all the stakes from the last movie well forget that there's a whole jungle full of blue macaws now [ __ ] you and in a movie about an endangered species of birds in a jungle what could they possibly make the villains lagers of course lagers and this time around the environmental psa is shoved down your throat way too hard andy garcia's hatred of humans is way too exaggerated and so is this lager boss man he's the most cookie cutter generic evil boss who hates nature and will do whatever it takes to run his business i guess it's supposed to be funny that instead of smoking a cigar like you'd expect he sucks on lollipops but to me that juxtaposition just made it really weird linda and tulio were also kind of just in this movie and they ran into the lager boss guy and he tied them to a tree what this conflict was just completely uninteresting not because they're not a potent threat but because you know exactly what's gonna happen blue is gonna get all the other animals to help him drive the loggers off there's nothing else that could possibly happen and number five there's the conflict with bruno mars where jules starts spending a lot of time with him and blue gets jealous and his jealousy sets off this ridiculous chain of events where blue tries to get some nuts to impress jewel but accidentally goes to the side of the grove that belongs to the red birds because segregation and they get mad at him and challenge him to a football game because for some contrived reason this is the way that they resolve territorial disputes i guess it's supposed to be funny because oh isn't it funny how brazilians take soccer so seriously but this means war what does it have to but this football game is the major turning point in terms of the inner character conflict blue who despite having proven himself to be very good at football still scores an own goal by accident losing the game to the red birds and then everyone hates him because they won't get nuts anymore what why is this all so contrived what is the point and also if these birds want to avoid humans finding them which they do why do they put on these huge loud football games in a wide open arena that can be seen from the air for miles around who wrote this and i don't know how to logically segue into this next bit but i have to say this okay the most absurdly stupid scene in this movie is during the climax right after we think the birds have won the battle against the loggers but the scene keeps going it cuts away to the logger boss lighting sticks of dynamite to explode the trees and he says the most cliched villain line of all time i have to do everything myself blue then flies over and grabs one of the sticks of dynamite wow what a hero and they even have the gall to play blue's orchestral motif desperately trying to recreate the moment where blue learned to fly in the first movie and is just not a powerful moment at all because kind of like everything else in this movie it just happens with barely any build up to it okay then nigel grabs on to the dynamite for some reason what does he think this is gonna do exactly and then the dynamite explodes in midair and when the smoke clears blue and nigel are like hanging from vines upside down right next to each other how did this happen how is this even physically possible and then they start having a slap fight what is going on this is so weird and then the anteater shoots a poison dart to try and kill blue but he hits nigel instead whoops couldn't have seen that coming and then nigel falls to the ground while reciting a shakespearean poem and everyone gathers around to watch and kristen chenoweth commits suicide sure sure why not at this point anyone with more than two brain cells has stopped taking anything seriously in this movie but then but but then it turns out that the frog he got the poison from on the dart wasn't actually poisonous her whole life she thought she was poisonous but it turns out she was lied to but by who it's a very common mistake but she's a harmless pseudo-denturebait you can tell by the pink spots okay sure i get that the humans might mistake her for being poisonous but what's her excuse has she never touched another living organism before why write this twist in when nigel could just die or how about you just let him die in the first movie so he didn't have to be such a bad character in this one just just oh my god it makes me so angry i mean what kind of a resolution is this to a story this this is the climax this is the climax of the movie what is this and for all the focus put on the logger boss there's not even a satisfying moment where the good guys take down the logger boss because it just cuts to a shot of a snake with a giant lump in its throat implying that the bad guy just got eaten by a snake seriously who who wrote this i am angry i'm really angry right now okay no i need some i need some water [Applause] this writing is so bafflingly next level bad to the point where i'm legitimately convinced that this movie is a joke this movie is just one big joke everybody that's the only logical explanation it has to be a joke i refuse to believe that whoever wrote this script actually thought it made a shred of sense all that i really wanted to see in a sequel to this movie was to see how blue and jewel were doing in terms of their relationship that's it i had no other expectations about where the story might go but this movie created new standards that i didn't even know i had and then went below them isn't that nice [Music] the only thing and i mean the only thing that i liked about rio 2 was the songs the musical numbers i must admit were pretty fire the opening musical number what is love is a really good introduction back into rio with everyone partying and dancing and stuff although the majority of this movie doesn't actually take place in rio so and beautiful creatures just go so hard whatever you call this music style i love it it just makes you want to clap along so badly and as much as i would love to play the full song for you just to show you what i mean i'd obviously get copyrighted so instead i'll just play a few snippets [Music] [Music] i encourage you to just search up this song and listen to it on your own it'll make you feel really good the songs in this movie were seriously so unbelievably amazing and they trick you into thinking the rest of the movie will stay on par with the energy and tone of those scenes but unfortunately no honestly it's really hard for me to accurately pinpoint exactly what made me dislike this movie so much all i can say is that after i watched it i was left with the worst kind of unsatisfied feeling in the pit of my stomach despite that final battle of epic proportions or the extravagant final musical number it just goes to show you how it doesn't matter how much crazy you shove into a scene you can't enjoy it unless it's earned and none of this feels earned at all why should i care that andy garcia suddenly respects blue now what have they given to me about this character that i should like that he stopped being an [ __ ] why should i care when the villains are defeated this movie does an awful job of balancing these two villains with completely independent motivations and i don't know which one they want me to care about more like i can't focus just pick one pick one and why should i care that blue and jewel are happily living in the jungle now you sure you can make the amazon our home maybe we can do summers in rio you're my one and only jewel i mean sure this is a sweet moment but practically the same thing already happened in the first movie blue finally learned to fly at the end symbolizing how he overcame his lifelong fears and blue and jewel are happily married oh hey honey hey you hungry feels kind of weird using human marital terms to describe birds but blue couldn't very well go through the same journey again so his handicap this time is that he's way too reliant on human technology which again wasn't even a huge problem about his character in the first movie there's nothing really wrong with having this trait but they force it into becoming a source of conflict i simply could not get invested in any of what was happening here these two movies just felt like they were on completely separate planes of existence i mean they don't take place in the same setting there's an entirely new ensemble of characters all of which are annoying the plot is just so stupid it's not funny and generally they just had completely different tones but i still don't really know if any of those things could accurately describe or explain the feeling i had after watching rio 2. my experience watching this sequel was truly something i never felt before i guess i was at a point in my life where i still wasn't fully familiar with the concept of studios just making a sequel for the money instead of because they had a vision for the franchise i thought there was at least a chance that this would be good silly me of course it's a failure of entertainment from any perspective but being a fan of the original makes the aftertaste even more sour i mean this movie is just so heartless i think that's an accurate word to describe it heartless the problem with sequels in general is that when you have a first film created with a genuine intent and a message that the creators wanted to convey with it and people want a second movie the creators will then be forced to scrape together a new theme or message to use but with the same characters in order to capitalize off the success of the first movie and so the result often doesn't feel genuine because often it's not either because the new themer message comes off as a huge stretch to fit with the same characters again or because the events are so disconnected from the first movie because they never intended to make a sequel in the first place if making a sequel was never part of a creator's original intent for the love of god don't make it but now i think it's time for the million-dollar question why is this movie ranked above horton here's a who didn't this movie make me considerably more angry yes while it's true that rio 2 outraged me far more on a personal level it has really good musical numbers that's seriously the only reason this movie's ranked slightly higher there's not a single damn thing i could point to in horton hears a who that justifies why on earth blue sky thought making this adaptation was a good idea but at least for 5 fleeting minutes in rio 2 i can jam out while watching birds dance so in conclusion thank god ryo3 is never coming out if i didn't make this clear enough already rio 2 is just so colossally lame if you want more of these characters after watching the first movie just go and play rio match 3 party i imagine you get about the same level of plot and character development from this mobile game as you would out of this animated feature soaring [Music] let me ask you a question when you think of the word epic what comes to your mind besides aquaman well as it turns out epic is actually the name of a popular game developing studio largely known for creating the game for okay hold on well as it turns out epic is the title of an animated movie released by blue sky in that i had no idea even existed until i googled blue sky movies for this video so i found it on disney plus and i gave it a watch so i just watched blue skies epic and it was surprisingly okay i guess but that is far from a compliment because this movie is probably the weirdest out of blue sky's entire catalog the first thing i have to okay i'll stop with the yms impression the first thing i have to say is that the title has nothing to do with the movie nothing whatsoever i mean the movie isn't all that epic so i'm not sure what they were thinking when they named it or maybe they just weren't thinking about how the connotation of that word would change over time from shakespearean poems to fortnite hello hey hey hey bro okay so i'm filming a video right now and i just have a quick question for you so what is the first thing you think of when i say the word epic uh i don't know like like among us epic or fortnite epic now you may be asking what is this movie about because there's a very good chance that you haven't seen it yet of course i may just be stupid and everyone's seen this movie but i'm gonna be giving this review as if nobody has well in the words of chris wedge the director epic is an adventure on the scale of star wars right so in a sentence i would say the plot of this movie is an odd amalgamation vocabulary word of elements from avatar how to train your dragon and honey i shrunk the kids okay let me explain the premise of epic is that there is this society of little leaf people that live in the forest and there's this scientist man who's trying to prove they exist so he can prove to his family that he's not crazy his daughter whose name is mk gets so fed up with her dad that she wants to move out but she gets shrunk down to the size of the leaf people and ends up having to save the forest now there's a lot of complicated lore around these leaf men that they attempt to shove into 100 minutes of movie so there are points where i was very confused about what was going on but i'll try to explain the rules of this weird universe to you as best as i can so basically how this society works is that the queen of the leaf people has this magical power that keeps the forest healthy and she can like control the forest and stuff and it's important that she is is protected and she's alive and the way they choose new queens is not by like descendants or anything the way they pick new queens is very strange and unclear basically there's this ceremony there's a scene in the movie where the queen goes to this pond with a bunch of like flower bulbs floating on the surface and she picks one of the flower bulbs to like pass her energy onto or something don't ask me how that works but the important thing you need to know is that that bulb is going to be the next queen or something i don't know [Music] quick side note the queen is actually voiced by beyonce which i did not know until i read the credits i mean with such iconic voice actors as beyonce and pitbull you know this movie's about to be good so the movie starts to get interesting well interesting the movie starts to get interesting when like this gang of black bug monsters attacks like launches an attack on the queen and the the queen dies and then the forest no longer has the magic but for some reason mk is vitally necessary for the deliverance of the bulb thingy i have no idea why but movies got a movie so yeah mk gets shrunk down and then is entrusted with the safety of this bulb thingy which is in turn the safety of the entire people and the entire forest and i'm like why did the queen just give her this thing when she just like ugh she gave her the the the next queen or something the bulb is the next queen i don't understand i still don't understand how it works okay let's get back on track um that gang of black bug monsters that i mentioned is now hell bent on like destroying the forest and stealing the bulb thingy to make sure the new queen is not born or whatever and the leaf people have to make sure the bowl blossoms in moonlight uh and that that way the queen will be born or i have no idea what i'm talking about okay so yeah there's a bunch a bunch of stuff happens there's there's a teen romance subplot between mk and this other guy who i don't care about uh there's this whole thing about the like mk is part of a prophecy and there's scrolls and they tell the future uh meanwhile while all this is happening mk's dad is back at home and is losing hope now because he thinks mk ran away when actuality she's like in the backyard after all this shenanigans happens uh the they managed to take down the leader of the black bug monsters uh the bulb blossoms in moonlight and uh and like the bulb delivers its energy to this random girl that we saw in the beginning the movie for like two minutes uh mk learns that you should listen to people because even though you don't see it that mean that doesn't mean it's not there uh or something it kind of kind of lost me at the end i don't know man the emotional resolution didn't make any sense the pacing was just awful and don't even get me started on the climax it was just so underwhelming now back to the title of the movie why is it called epic i can't for the life of me figure it out maybe they just named it that so their movie would pop up when you googled epic movie this has to be the most vague and confusing movie title i've ever seen which i suppose is fitting because this is a very vague and confusing movie but seriously though i was surprised at how not terrible this random movie i'd never heard of was compared to these last two now epic is far from being epic but i can at least respect the originality in its premise that you don't see a lot for example i thought the detail that the leaf people perceived time faster than humans was pretty neat i don't think i mentioned that but basically one of the gimmicks in this movie is that uh when you're small you perceive time faster than big humans and in that way they can always avoid detection when a human comes out comes around uh and that was that was pretty neat i also appreciated its restraint from just turning into a huge slapstick fest to appease the children like horton hears a who however there were those two slug characters who were just comic relief and their only purpose in the movie was to keep the bulb moist yeah those are their words not mine however comma i still didn't like it all that much for a number of reasons first i found the animation style and color palette they used to be just kind of bland which is kind of a big problem when your movie is animated actually come to think of it maybe there's just something i don't like about the way blue sky animates jungles so it had that going against it from the beginning the first like 15 minutes were just boring and the exposition wasn't that great and if you couldn't tell from my summary of the movie it was very hard to follow what was going on i probably would have turned it off if i wasn't watching it for a review it gets slightly better towards the middle though to me it seems like the writers just had too many ideas for what they wanted to put in this movie uh both related to the lore of the leaf people and just like side elements there were two main plots going on in this movie one about the leaf people trying to save the forest and the other about mk and her dad and neither of those plots got developed very well again as you could tell by my rumbling rambling and confused uh summary as like i'm doing now i mean first off the leaf people lore holy cow is there so much lore and they do not explain any of it i can't stress that enough there's just so much going on there's beef going on between the leaf people and these the black bug monsters there's the whole thing where the queen has to choose a new a new queen uh she has powers that can control uh uh she can control uh the forest oh there's also this caterpillar who's like a future teller but wait no he's not there's scrolls that tell the future but uh he hasn't read some of them and apparently the queen dying was in the scrolls the entire time but he never read them what why are the slugs in there why why are these slugs characters they're so annoying there's a big sack of shut your flat face over there by that tree why don't you go pick it up i i still don't know why the queen chose mk to to be the deliverer of the bull thingy she you she was just living she's a human why why did you shrink her why why did you who told why and on top of all that confusing stuff there's a bunch of loose ends they leave which just leaves you feeling frustrated at the end of the movie for example they hinted the fact that the main villain and the general of the leaf people are father and son and i thought oh that they must have some personal beef with each other and that's why he wants to take over the forest right but they never confirm nor deny any suspicions you may have and there's a bunch of separate weird details that have nothing to do with the leaf people they're just random details about like at the the other plot with mk and the dad like mk's dog has three legs and i i thought that might be some sort of symbolism or something but it's like no it's it's not significant at all i don't know why they gave the dog three legs mk's full name is actually mary katherine and they made they made a big deal of stressing that in the beginning actually i go by mk now oh mk well i like that it's uh it's more um grown up make yourself at home mary kathy oh nope who's married catherine mk i mean and i thought that little detail may come back at the end in some sort of emotional resolution between the two of them but no it doesn't of course not because [ __ ] you i honestly tried so hard to find meaning in this movie as i didn't want to go into it with the mindset that it was going to be awful but i truly feel like they didn't quite know where they wanted to take this if they had better fleshed out the leaf people society better explain the history maybe worked on some of the character designs because holy cow if they had done all that maybe i would have actually cared about what was happening but sadly i regret to inform anyone who hasn't seen it then epic is not very good when i a person who watches pretty much every animated movie comes out since i was very young somehow managed to not only not see this movie but not know it existed for eight years after it came out well that says something about the impact it left in people's brains which is probably none i'm giving this one a four out of ten closer to a five than a three if it makes you feel any better i'm never gonna think about this movie again because it's just it's just a whole lot of just oh there's nothing really matters nothing this movie doesn't matter nothing matters probably taking at least a month from the time i watch this movie to write my thoughts organize a script and record this and by the time i'm editing i'll have absolutely no memory of what past me was thinking did it show can you tell how confused i am right now oh my god let's just move on [Music] every studio has their thing disney has mickey mouse pixar has the lamp dreamworks has moon fishing boy illumination has the minions and blue sky blue sky has this squirrel why ice age is probably the most overrated franchise i've ever encountered that's not to say the ice age movies are awful they're they're fine movies i guess but i'm not going to spend a lot of time on them i mean what am i even supposed to say about these movies you've all heard of them and some of you may even be fans of them but me i i have no opinion on this franchise at all like i i i i could not give less of a a care about this this franchise obviously they have good things in them or else they wouldn't be so widely known and there wouldn't be freaking five of them or maybe they're only widely known from the memes either way i honestly don't think ice age is good or bad i just don't care and i simply couldn't be bothered to rank each movie individually because my feelings on the franchises all are about the same i remember watching all five movies as a very younger child and not giving a single thought to them since i hardly remember what happens in them and i don't care i seriously cannot stress enough how little of a crap i give about the ice age franchise all the movies kind of blend together in my mind none of them really stuck with me and i can't remember what happens in each movie and i certainly couldn't be bothered to re-watch any of them so i'm just going based on what i do remember let's see i i hate i hate the squirrel he's just really stupid i hate sid he's annoying the saber-tooth tiger was kind of cool i liked him what was his name diego i i refused to google anything oh i remember the baby that baby can be thrown into a volcano yeah i think that's about it if it makes you feel any better i think my least favorite would be the fourth one followed by the fifth third second and first there that's my ranking i truly have nothing of value to say about these movies like at all i i why they are blue sky's most well-known property i will never know [Music] i wanted to rank for it an entire i truly did but it's gonna have to settle for number five because while i think it attempts to have themes for slightly more mature audiences mature being relative of course because we're still watching a kids movie i do have to give it credit for trying to be more introspective and intelligent i don't know if i'm using the right words because again this is all relative we're still talking about an animated kids movie but anyway i thought this movie was pretty good the first time i saw it but the more and more i thought about it the more i thought no no this movie isn't good don't get me wrong i like this movie all right it's just that it physically hurts me knowing that it could have been so much better if they just cut some of the stupid crap or or all of it this movie tries way too hard to be funny at times with a bunch of characters that have genuine emotional moments one second but the next they're back to being comic relief namely the stupid goat the stupid horses the stupid hedgehogs the stupid bell fighter the stupid anthony anderson bowl and the stupid scottish bull why was he scottish well put that in your tilt said smoke it there was that one bit when ferdinand got back to the ranch and everyone was obsessing about how huge he was which that was just kind of weird my thing is just that further themes that ferdinand seems to be dealing with maybe i'm completely misunderstanding this but it baffles me as to why they also tried to cram it so full of stupid slapstick and jokes for babies this is the trap that i see a lot of animated movies fall into especially when the characters are animals dialing down some of the more mindless and distracting humor like haha they're speaking in a funny accent or ha ha they showed a butt they said but definitely would have made it an acceptable level of baby humor while simultaneously maintaining the messages it conveys of looking out for each other and avoiding fighting now that i think about it it's kind of like the reverse book of life a perfect example of what i believe ferdinand could have been is pixar's coco coco is a great film that is funny and emotional at the same time something pixar does phenomenally there are great themes that aren't hindered by the humor because it's well integrated with intermittent jokes and well-timed physical humor also the whole mexico vibe is maintained by actually having actors with the accent that way you're not taken out of the movie by stupid voices like this in ferdinand there were times where i just completely forgot that this story was taking place in spain because the voice cast and oh my god can we talk about the scottish bull why why is one of them scottish what genius down blue sky decided to give one of these bulls who live in spain a scottish accent it was weird enough that they got anthony anderson to voice one of them but then they got this scottish guy to voice one of them and it's just so distracting and these horses these horses are even worse they're like german and and they speak in the most annoying german accent you've ever heard you see horses we have the beautiful legs for the dancing the boys have swatched yeah look at me why just why why why do they do all of this and of course i know the answer to that question the answer that question is that they had to find a way to make the toddlers laugh as much as possible i could just imagine the casting calls they sent out for this movie instead of asking for any spanish people they asked for people who could do the stupidest voices but you know what the most baffling part is you know the most baffling part is some genius down at blue sky was like hmm who would be a good person to fit this role oh how about the how about that guy john cena how about the wrestler how about the how about that you know you know his name is john cena that guy let's get him to voice this bull that that that's totally fitting right right guys and like he he had he had everyone else tied to chairs with guns pointed their head and like right guys that's a good idea right john cena as the main character let me remind you again that this movie takes place in spain he's supposed to be spanish why did you call john cena to voice this ball the world sees ferdinand as one thing a fighter i know exactly how ferdinand feels the movie sends a message that resonates very strongly with me don't judge a bull by his cover the only bull whose voice actually made sense was valiente and i actually liked him i like that guy valiente may be my favorite character in ferdinand but notice how pretty much all of my complaints come from the jokes and not the essence of the movie itself it's not a completely stupid idea like horton hears a who it's not completely heartless like rio 2 and it doesn't suffer from a lack of development like epic it's quite evident that someone had their heart on this project ferdinand is big-hearted and he sees the best in everyone while valiente is like a war-hardened fighter who is determined to prove himself in the ring everyone sees ferdinand as a monster but ultimately he proves valiente and everyone else wrong that's a great setup for a potential masterpiece of a film unfortunately the scriptwriter unfortunately the scriptwriter okay unfortunately the scriptwriter why can't i say that word unfortunately the script brought oh my god unfortunately the people who wrote the script were too paranoid that no kids would actually appreciate a story like this for what it was so they had to throw in a bunch of dumb jokes and dumb characters that ended up throwing off the entire tone of the movie such a shame but what are you gonna do about it [Music] now robots was also an interesting one to rank because this movie along with ferdinand was another pair of movies that i had to spend a lot of time thinking about placing because one of them is a movie with a great theme and message that gets overshadowed by a bunch of stupid and distracting humor while the other is pretty much nothing but a bunch of stupid and distracting humor and eventually i decided that for what they're both trying to be robots is the better movie if you think about it this movie works much better on pretty much every level than ferdinand does it's actually a surprisingly good time and i haven't really heard a lot of people talk about it online but the few movie critics who i have heard mention robots haven't really had much good to say about it which i can totally understand because on the surface it just looks like nothing but a stupid kids movie with shiny animation and dumb slapstick but like it's an animated movie about a society of robots like like what do you want from it sometimes especially with a premise like this just having a simple message like fight for what's right or follow your dreams or a corporation bad that you know that's enough that's enough for me in case you couldn't tell i'm not a professional movie critic over here and also yeah my views on this film may or may not be biased because i watched it like a million times as a ten-year-old and loved the heck out of it but i was a ten-year-old with standards okay i could tell a good kids movie from a bad kids movie so right off the bat i think the world building is excellent setting up a fun and interesting premise about a bunch of robots that live in a society together the design of this entire robot city and the impressively diverse cobbled together looks of all the robots were really cool and i would say have aged pretty well so right away 10 year old me was sold on sitting through this entire movie but from there it actually tells a decent story with likeable characters played by good actors everyone from the wide-eyed dreamer rodney the comic relief robin williams and the wacky main villain ratchet were super fun to watch because of their fun designs and the comedic dialogue they were given the story was thoroughly wild and unpredictable as you might expect from a movie where everything is a robot and a lot of the jokes surprisingly were actual jokes you know lines that are actually funny of course this movie doesn't bring anything really special to the table but there was enough exposition for me to actually care about what was happening and so i was invested through till the end with a satisfying resolution that's all i really ask for in a movie you know but obviously this movie has its fair share of moments that are purely there for the entertainment of children like that part where all the metal sticks to rodney the part where robin williams sings a parody of singing in the rain for some reason and jennifer coolidge's entire character just being a butt joke in fact one of the most memorable scenes for me was the one where rodney and fender were zooming around in that discount marble madness public transit system but unlike ferdinand it never tries to be super serious making this kind of baby humor acceptable what i think makes robots actually good children's entertainment over others is that it strikes a better balance of visual comedy to comedic dialogue to actual story progression the messages are all very surface level yes but the story and characters are nonetheless fun and entertaining so overall i would recommend this movie for your group of kids to watch in the other room while you have a book club or just something like that they'll find it funny if nothing else i know i did [Music] i'll be totally honest with you i'm a sucker for spy movies that's the only reason tenant made it so far in my 2020 list it's why cars 2 is my favorite cars movie and it's really the only reason this movie is so high in this list sure the messages and themes are good but telling a dope ass story about an epic spy with gadgets and he's a pigeon and just just boom lies in disguise was the only movie of 2019 that i was actually looking forward to because not only was it a spy movie but it had freaking will smith and tom holland in it come on if that's not enough to automatically make you see it i don't know what is but seriously i think this movie was really well done and put together with great characters and funny moments to accompany its genuine heart so if you've seen any of the trailers you pretty much know the gist of spies in disguise agent will smith is the top agent at his unnamed agency until he gets turned into a pigeon and he has to stop the villain from using his army of drones to take over the world with the help of tom holland and his gadgets antics ensue that is just such a wild premise that they make work so well i mean the fact that it was a spy movie alone pretty much sold me but it's all these additional little details that make the experience so much more enjoyable right away i have to say that i really like the style of this movie's animation which i don't quite know how to describe basically it has a really heavy emphasis on lighting and sharp detail which really fits with the spy vibe and the character designs i think are fresh and unique which is a good change of pace okay but how about this story well it actually reminded me a lot of the emperor's new groove both cuzco and lance start out being egotistical rude pushing other people away and have to learn a lesson about teamwork through being turned into an animal right the potion the potion for will smith the potion chosen especially to kill will smith will smith's potion and pacha and walter serve as the companion character who teaches their friend the value of others actually walter and lance's relationship is almost like that of a father and son because of how walter is grown up without any parents and needs someone to look up to which makes this dynamic even nicer to see play out and using the guise of an epic spy thriller to tell this story is almost genius i definitely did not go into this movie expecting to get hit quite as hard in the feels as i did now the characters this movie has a pretty standard set of character types but the characters are fleshed out really well like in the beginning it seems like lance is just a generic oh i'm the best i'd i work alone i hate people kind of guy but the way his character develops through walter's influence is really great and contrary to what i was expecting especially considering the last animated movie he was in dan king will smith's voice acting was pretty good and he never distracted from the focus of the scene okay scratch that i hate will smith tom holland is back at it again playing a nerdy socially awkward american teenager who doesn't have a dad but still charming we love you tom the ensemble of secondary characters who were hunting down lance never felt like they were dragging down the story their subplot is actually pretty good and the movie manages to give a lot of personality to these two minor side characters eyes and ears and they collectively have like less than 30 lines of dialogue almost a third of which are just dj khaled saying a single word this man tripping even the robot hand villain man who they easily could have written off as just a generic power hungry guy has some really interesting character moments and finally the action i cannot go along without talking about the action you guys already know that i'm all about the action and the action scenes in this movie are so incredibly phenomenally epic the action is endlessly creative with the devices it utilizes like a gong that doubles as a rocket platform an accidentally triggered oil slick that when driving backwards will turn it into a ring of fire and all those wacky gadgets that the agents use to defeat the army of drones in the final battle it's all just so fun but what's great about the action scenes in this movie in particular is that they beautifully double as story progression scenes for example during the car chase at the beginning which is probably my favorite action scene in this movie lance and walter argue over whether or not they should use the car's weapons to attack the people following them which establishes lance and walters differing viewpoints on being pacifist and while that's happening the autopilot on the self-driving car malfunctions and they end up driving backwards through a tunnel and unintentionally making an epic escape from their pursuers oh my god do i love this movie oh yeah and one more thing this movie is funny as hell dude every line of dialogue is just so masterfully written spies in disguise definitely has personality and while there are many instances where the attempts at both serious and funny moments fall flat it's definitely the best kids movie about spies i've seen yet so yeah great balance of heart and laughs that will be entertaining for audiences of all ages and as their final project before being shut down i think it was a really good note to end on congratulations will you did good [Music] god is the peanuts movie a breath of fresh air just when i thought there was no hope left for movie adaptations of nostalgic childhood properties blue sky swoops in and saves the day i mean these awfully written shoddy cash grab movies trying to take advantage of nostalgia are really making my life a grind these dirty money-grubbing studios that don't give a single care about actually making good movies that have any sort of personality or nuance to them make me so angry and when another one of these awful movie adaptations of a pre-existing property gets made i think are these people and i thinking of the same source material because the whole point of why people like the original property is almost always completely lost in translation and the result is a pandering and soulless movie that does nothing but devalue the original property that people actually loved and enjoyed but the peanuts movie captures everything that i and i think everyone loves about the penis cartoons the people down at blue sky clearly really put a lot of thought into portraying these characters on the big screen and they're one of the only studios i've seen to get a movie adaptation right and keep it true to the source material i can't stress enough that this is the perfect movie adaptation they absolutely nailed the animation style somehow making the 3d look work even though the characters were about as 2d as you could get in the comic strips and cartoon it's always difficult to pull off a 3d rendition of an old 2d cartoon exhibit a the freaking captain underpants movie the animation in that movie was just awful everything was so ugly because they tried to adapt these characters into 3d i mean look at this guy who who looked at this guy and thought gee this guy needs to be rendered in 3d but the stop-motion he vibe the animation in the peanuts movie gave off made it so much more charming to watch they got a really great ensemble of voice actors that capture the same energy as the old cartoons actually i'm not even sure that they're different people they could be the same people and i just don't know but it was so much fun to see these beloved characters come to new life on the big screen it was so fun to see the classic lucy therapist scene and ultra 4k resolution the peanuts cartoons were truly something special and there's never been anything quite like it every time you hear a line that one of these kids says it's so unique and quirky and you can't help but think how did they come up with this like for example how everyone calls charlie brown by his full name i don't know why they do this but it just fits the way they say these things just makes it sound completely natural one of my favorite lines in the peanuts movie is when charlie brown is talking to lucy about the little red-haired girl and he says if i was something and she was something then i could talk to her if i was nothing and she was nothing then i could talk to her but she's something and i'm nothing so i just can't talk to her that is such a classic example of the utterly unique language of the peanuts world and the way this movie so accurately captures that is impressive all the characters you love are back exactly how you remember them with the same charm personality quirks and witty dialogue i don't think i need to go too far into detail about that because we all know these characters but let's talk about this movie for what it is and not comparing it to its source material the story itself takes a simple yet elegant route by really exploring the character we all know and love on the outside an awkward clumsy blockheaded loser but on the inside a lovable kind kid it's so incredibly charming funny and heartwarming i really don't know what it is about these characters that i love so much every event in the movie is really cleverly written from charlie brown giving up his act of the talent show to this standardized test mix-up all of them opportunities for the little red-haired girl to see what he's really like and charlie brown finally finds a girl who understands him i especially like the interlaced scenes of snoopy and his fantasy about fighting the red baron i mean they really thought of everything when they wrote this movie so all in all blue sky did a great job of honoring the charlie brown we all loved while simultaneously telling a great original story using the characters ironically the one part i didn't really like was when they made direct references to famous lines from the cartoons like the classic i've been kissed by a dog thing from the charlie brown christmas special they try to find a way to make lucy say that again and it just doesn't sound natural but i don't have much more to say than that because it really is just like the old peanuts cartoons just in 3d but as much as i love the peanuts movie i couldn't bring myself to give it the number one spot because it was already entirely based on a property i already love and so my choice for the number one blue sky movie is one with no nostalgia attached no wildly outlandish premise no epic spy action and yet a movie that i quite unexpectedly have grown to appreciate even more than peanuts and by now i think you already know which movie that is [Music] i don't think it's possible for me to fully explain my love for rio in fact i don't even know if the right words exist but i'll sure try i mean just the experience of this movie alone is so much fun and not only is it a fun time but it's an incredibly heartwarming love story that has never gotten old on my multiple re-watches no other movie has even come close to making me feel quite the way rio does with its genuinely great story and characters not that this is the only movie with a great story and characters but there's something special about rio and i absolutely adore it but i don't think i've ever actually talked to anyone about how much i love this movie because they probably just stare at me like really rio that g-rated animated kids movie about birds yeah that movie i know what it looks like but there's some really good stuff in here just just hear me out okay this should have been the movie that blue sky got famous for this should have been the movie that launched blue sky into popularity this should be blue sky's most iconic movie the main character's name is blue for sake he should be the mascot for this studio not this goofy squirrel [ __ ] ice age this is indisputably blue sky's greatest film i don't want to hear it in the comments shut up and i'm not even saying this as someone who grew up with this movie as a large and meaningful part of my childhood or anything like that the first time i watched rio when i was like what seven i didn't think much of it at all besides oh funny movie about birds haha and then i basically forgot about it until as fate would have it i was on a plane ride to france for a vacation and i saw rio on the in-flight entertainment list wasn't flying first class or anything i'm pretty sure i had a middle seat so yeah but i sat there on that plane and i watched an animated movie about birds in brazil anyway and the second time around at the wise old age of 13 i appreciated this movie so much more every element you could criticize in a movie is executed spectacularly from the animation to the voice acting to the writing to the humor it's all just so fun to watch i don't actually know much about the production history of this movie but from the final product i can at least tell that these people had a genuine intent and a vision from the start rio is the story of blue and jewel who are the last two remaining macaws of their species on earth we're not going to talk about the sequel okay who go on an adventure across rio de janeiro partying it up evading capture and eventually falling in love which is genuinely a great thing to see unfold we also follow linda tullio and fernando as they try and track down blue and jewel the antics of the city birds we meet along the way and the villainous schemes of the three smugglers this movie immaculately balances comedy romance and psa about smuggling all rolled into 90 minutes of pure entertainment i realize that last statement makes me sound like i've never heard of a romantic comedy before but this movie still really stands out to me in that way and you don't see a lot of this kind of thing in animation either but now let's really break down everything that makes this such a great and fun movie starting with our protagonist blue and the award for the most creative character name goes to blue is a clumsy yet funny and intelligent bird perfectly portrayed by jesse eisenberg who has no offense one of the goofiest voices i've ever heard hi my name is blue and i like the cheese with the mold on it i read this [ __ ] hilarious review for the movie on imdb here let me read it to you jesse eisenberg should be forever grateful that the oscar nominated the social network was released before rio that's because his voice as blue the macaw is so distinctive and perfect that in my mind he will always be blue and if rio had been released months ago audiences worldwide would think that mark zuckerberg the facebook founder missed his cage mirror and little bell it's the funniest [ __ ] thing i've ever read he's been domesticated and has lived with a human in a bookstore in minnesota all his life which is why he's such a dork the morning routine montage immediately following the opening scene where blue gets taken from the jungle at a young age does a great job of establishing this character his unconventional skills for a bird and his bond with linda but troubles arise when blue and linda fly out to brazil so blue can meet up with his female counterpart in rio now blue has to deal with the group of smugglers trying to capture him while also struggling to co-exist with our deuteragonist jewel i didn't have to google to make sure that was a word jewel is the aggressive rebellious bird that blue is paired with in order to save the species would have been a lot cooler if she was named sky but no no use cry never spill milk and this matchup of character types makes for a really excellent dynamic blue is funny mostly unintentionally through some screw-up or his habit of saying really nerdy things i'm changing the only bird in the world who can't fly actually there are about 40 species of fighters no ducks can fly yeah it's time to take it to the next level what's wrong with this level but he struggles with his lack of bravery on the other wing yeah you see what i did there jewel is everything that blue wants to be totally spirited independent and confident and on top of that jewel can fly while blue never learned to which physically represents how blue whether he knows it or not wants to have jewel's qualities it's a reminder of how drastically different they are all jewel wants to do is fly free and live in the jungle but all blue wants to do is sit at home and drink hot chocolate but the two of them literally being chained together for half the movie forces them to get along which i found to be a really clever plot device of course at first the two of them seem completely incompatible but as time goes on they learn to appreciate each other this dynamic works really well and so it feels real when you see their relationship develop naturally over the course of the movie good thing that they're the last two of their species on earth because they really are a perfect match for each other i am seriously obsessed with these two blue is one of my favorite characters ever just because of how quirky charming and funny he is and if i'm being honest i also really relate to his struggles the act of flying as birds quite obviously symbolize is the act of letting it go expressing yourself and just being free it's tough for blue to be in a foreign country where everyone else around him can fly but he's stuck on the ground kind of like how i always find myself sitting and watching everyone else have fun because i never know how to interact with anyone that moment when blue and jewel's chain comes off and blue watches as jewel lets it all out and immediately soars into the sky is a devastating reminder of how out of place he is flying speaking metaphorically of course is something that i'm still struggling to do and so i really enjoyed going through this arc with blue as for jewel i love how fierce spirited yet emotionally vulnerable and sympathetic she can be and plus i mean i mean it's just me or is jewel kind of hot my fur but seriously i love this character dynamic it's such a sweet relationship with really satisfying arcs to go along with it balloon forever moving on the movie's setting obviously rio de janeiro is a really fun location for a movie on its own and the exploration of its culture is really enjoyable rio is a city of love it's a city of partying it's a city of freedom although many of you probably know it as the city that hosted the olympics in 2016. now this setting establishment accomplishes many things it encourages you to have a good time it provides a logical reason for conflict because smugglers are prevalent in brazil and it provides the perfect environment for a potential romance to blossom and let's face it nobody would watch a movie with these same characters and same story but set in i don't know canada setting is probably the most crucial aspect of immersion in a movie and this movie setting gives the whole thing a vibe i can only describe as fun and keeping in line with the fun vibe everything visually here is just so exciting and fun to look at i mean just take a look at these character designs they're so colorful and expressive and to quote one ralph the minion maker you can tell what they're all about just by looking at them including a lot of these human characters too and the same goes for these immersive set pieces you got these towering apartments the colorful beaches the lively jungles the christ the redeemer statue that part where they all went to a rave for birds and who could forget karnaval in fact i'm realizing that another big reason that rio 2 was such a letdown for me is that all of these fun locations were replaced with this drab monochromatic foliage that became less and less visually appealing the longer we spent in it the actual style of the animation is nothing revolutionary but it still utilizes endless interesting backgrounds and the sheer diversity of winged wildlife in brazil to its full advantage but as much fun as this movie is to look at it's even more fun to listen to the songs in this movie just like i talked about in rio 2 are certified box reel in rio is a great tone setter at the beginning and the reprise at the end brings it all back beautifully and i want to party while the lyrics aren't the greatest works really well in junction with that powerful scene where blue and jewels share their first dance going on a slight tangent here but this scene in particular i think really captures the spirit of this movie the music animation camera work and the use of this ambient pink lighting all combined to create something wonderful it's an absolute bop of a musical number it's the moment where blue gets his groove back and it's the first real moment that sets off blue and jewel's budding romance [Music] once again you really have to watch this whole scene uninterrupted and i can't play it for you here without this video getting taken down i'll leave a link here for you to watch the whole scene yourself seriously it's great now getting back on track the key difference between the music in these two movies is that unlike in rio 2 where they kind of just play a song in the middle of a bunch of shite although i still think beautiful creatures is better than any song in rio the music here is used really well in general not only working together with the visuals but together with the plot and have i mentioned the score the score slaps dude on my second viewing i paid way closer attention to just the music in the background of every scene the score is really well composed throughout and every choice fit perfectly and enhance the experience there's plenty of examples of lively upbeat brazilian drums and strings [Music] there's more slow and calm samba music [Music] but the main example i want to give is actually blue's orchestral motif if you don't know what that means it's basically just like a certain character's very short theme song now i'm by no means an expert on music but to me a good motif is simple memorable yet diverse and blues motif is all of these things let me demonstrate to you what i mean [Music] [Music] wow as you could hear all of those sound bites use the same basic melody but played with different instruments for a different tone and it works every single time it's sad when it needs to be and it's uplifting when it needs to be if i was the type of person to listen to music on a regular basis i would listen to the rio soundtrack all the time i mean except for that weird song they played during the credits tell the world she's the one she's the one i say loud not a very good fit for the tone if you ask me just no you gross [Music] the party-hearty love expert side characters work themselves into the story really well and on top of immersing you further in the setting with their fun-loving outlooks on life these characters play important roles in blue's arc raphael acts as an encouraging force urging blue to feel the rhythm of his heart and just be himself for jewel and nico and pedro are the ones to orchestrate the party scene i talked about also i have to mention nico's little bottle cap hat that was a nice touch i liked it the tracy morgan character was less enjoyable though he was kind of annoying i don't want to make bold statements because i've never actually been to rio but from what i can gather these characters exemplify that culture well i mean they embody the two things that i've heard are very prominent in brazil being both experts in the fields of love and partying at least these guys exemplify their culture better than the bulls did in ferdinand i harped on this a little bit already but for the sake of making my point i'm gonna talk about this again the all-star voice casting on this movie i think was exceptional and every single one of these actors lend so much life to their respective characters like i said jesse eisenberg is the perfect voice for this nervous quirky nerd bird and i could not imagine anyone else in this role in the wise words of user einery on imdb in my mind he will always be blue george lopez will i am and jamie foxx all have voices perfectly suited for these brazilian city birds nico pedro what up family where you been hiding yourself bird then i thought you were dead and although i'm not sure if any of them are actually brazilian at all their voices still fit much better than the voices of tullio the smugglers fernando and all the other humans in this movie both fit well the characters nationalities and personalities hey this is only half of what you promised me ah shut up kid i'm not really built for this weather oh are you looking for some books and if i had a nickel for every time i saw an animated movie with leslie mann playing an insecure mom type character i would have two nickels which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice right as for jermaine clement oh don't you worry i'll get to him as far as i know rio is the first animated movie on all of these actors records what a great first experience with voice acting this must have been if i was forced to pick the least strong voice actor in this movie though it would probably be anne hathaway a few of her lines probably could have used another take or two and they probably should have considered casting a non-white voice actor because like jewel lives in brazil are brazilians white i i don't think so right they're people from brazil aren't white right am i being racially insensitive i don't know but her voice still fits jules personality just fine characters are nothing without their performances and to me a movie is nothing without its characters so great job in that department you didn't think i'd forget about the comedy did you honestly you think so little of me i mean there's not much more to say about it than this movie is funny at all the moments when it needs to be the jokes were incorporated really well and a lot of them actually required you to have more than two brain cells to understand and laugh at the deliveries were spot on the tone wasn't sacrificed and the pacing didn't grind to a halt whenever an attempted humor was made even though wacky high chinks that inevitably ensue because you're still watching a kids movie are generally pretty amusing to watch and so i can say with confidence that every laugh this movie got out of me was legitimately earned like i was [ __ ] dying during the scene where blue was trying to confess his feelings to jewel on the train i have beautiful eyes uh yeah okay sure they're they're nice sure there are a few things here or there like the monkeys or luis that i can tell they wanted to make a meme out of and sorry no but for the most part these people really knew how to write a funny movie i have no idea where the disconnect was in the humor between these two movies like they have the same writers but i'm not going to go back into a rant about rio 2. i'm done talking about that movie for the rest of my life and finally we're getting to the part that i've been dying to talk about this entire video the villain and no i don't mean the smugglers i mean the real villain for the main characters now take for example a movie like i don't know madagascar 3 europe's most wanted this is going to sound like a totally random comparison but hear me out obviously the main characters of that movie are animals and the villain chateau grabbar is this animal control lady who wants to capture the animals for financial gain this type of human villain animal character dynamic is something you see a lot in kids movies but what they do in rio is really ingenious and i don't think i've ever seen it done in any other movie because the animals take center stage to the humans they do have the smugglers as villains but they're secondary to nigel like i said before nigel is the perfect antagonist he represents the threat that the smugglers hold on the birds but at the same time he's a bird himself which adds a whole other level of complexity to the dynamic between him and our protagonist birds now the smugglers are actually pretty entertaining characters in themselves which is something that the logger boss guy from rio 2 lacked but in the end we don't really care about what happens to the smugglers because what we really want to see is blue and jewel taking down nigel by giving the bird characters the threat of being kidnapped by humans embodied by a bird villain hunting them down that makes it personal and it makes nigel even more evil for actively working against his own kind plus jermaine clement does a phenomenal job with the voice nigel is a washed up bird celebrity with this dramatic flair to him which this guy's voice encapsulates perfectly we find out about nigel's backstory when he tells it to blue and jewel in song i'm aware that jermaine clement is part of a group called flight of the concords i personally don't listen to them but i really liked his music style here and it somehow completely fit with the tone of the movie reminding you that you're still watching a comedy like an abandoned school i have no principle there's no doubt that nigel is insane and a sadist but he has this sense of wit to him that makes him a really entertaining character as well as a threatening villain well in this movie at least so i'll say it again this movie is such a fun time and i've yet to really talk about the most important part of a good movie experience the writing and structure which i think is excellent nothing feels like it's dragging or trying too hard because the pacing is on point with every event having a purpose every event's occurrence feeling natural and with every scene flowing seamlessly into the next the comedic timing is expert level and so in the rare instance when a joke fails to make me laugh that's all that happens it just doesn't make me laugh it doesn't feel distracting or anything every one of these characters has a distinct and well-developed personality and when you watch how they interact it's fun to see them all play off each other naturally nothing feels cheap or unearned because everything from the characters to the stakes was established and developed really wonderfully like the part where the two main characters fight and split up before the climax that happens in like every animated movie ever actually feels like it comes about in a logical way because once blue is no longer dragging jewel down and there's no reason for them to stick together anymore he just wants to go home because he doesn't think he belongs but jewel has really grown to like him by this point and even though he can't fly she wants him to stay this works because we know their motivations and have witnessed their progressions and now we really want to see them get back together and although this is a serious moment of conflict they still manage to keep it somewhat lighthearted which is really nice i definitely would have liked it a lot less if it just went full-on drama i already explained why the villain was masterfully written and in general the story is really fresh and original after all the time i'm likely to spend editing this segment and looking at clips i'm definitely gonna go back and watch this movie again just to feel something anything and you should too now feel free to call me a furry but animated movies that give character to animals are always my favorite because it's such a surreal concept on its own to have talking animals but when i find myself genuinely getting attached to a pair of birds that's a really warm feeling it's crazy how attached i got to these two cerulean birds that means blue by the way and how much i wanted to see them grow as characters making this one of the only movie romances that i've actually ever cared about it occurs to me that it may sound to some of you like i'm either talking out of my ass or way over exaggerating the positives here but i can assure you that i wholeheartedly believe everything i've said about this movie or else i wouldn't have been talking about it for 20 minutes i'll tell you what man this movie brought me so close to tears i'm man enough to admit it there are so many memorable moments to speak of but perhaps my favorite is the incredible emotional climax where blue jumps out of the plane to save jewel pushing aside his fears and insecurities refusing to let go of the only bird he's ever loved which is legitimately one of my favorite movie moments of all time and after all he's been through and a boost of confidence blue finally finds the courage to spread his wings and fly for the first time in his life this isn't flying this is falling with style but the bigger reason that i almost cried was just thinking about how refreshingly good of a movie ryo was as a whole and still is i was fully invested when they were partying i was partying when they were having a character moment i was rooting for them i really respected this cockatoo as a villain heck even the b-plot about linda and tulio was really strong this movie left me with so much to think about please go to disney plus and watch it yourself it's so genuine it's so fun everything comes together in such a satisfying way it is a magnificently crafted feel-good experience and i know i've made a lot of stupid jokes throughout this segment but i seriously cannot tell you how much i enjoyed and would recommend this movie now rio won't be for everyone to be sure and if you feel like making fun of me for getting so passionate about this duology as a whole well fair enough but you have to at least agree that this movie is significantly above average i mean what can i say i'm a relatively simple person and rio just really does it for me it just it just makes me happy it just it makes me happy okay if it makes you feel any better i think i definitely assigned the title of magnum opus to the peanuts movie that movie is far less niche and it's accepted to be enjoyable for a much wider audience am i just a little bit too old to be liking this movie as much as i do yes yes i am but hey my opinion's officially out there out of the ever-growing pile of kids entertainment garbage piling up at our shores at an alarming rate these days this movie continues to be a shining beacon of quality a reminder of not only what animated movies can accomplish but proof of what a smaller studio like blue sky can accomplish with the right people on board we'll see if my views hold up a year or two from now when i inevitably watch it again but for the time being this movie slaps someone at some point in time once said that all good things must come to an end and so this brings a conclusion to my ranking video and fittingly the legacy of blue sky as well we thank you for your service may you rest in peace whether it be by your great stuff your middle of the road stuff or your pandering and awful stuff you will never be forgotten [Applause] [Music] this animation studio in particular has held a special place in my heart for quite some time and that's because they're not quite big enough to begin losing their personality and turning into a manipulative and slimy corporation but the production quality is still there making the few films they do produce even more special i've stuck with this studio through their highs and their lows their ups and their downs their rios and their rio twos and now if you've watched this all the way through tell me what your favorite of these movies is because i'd like to hear your opinions and i'll see you in the next video where i rank movies uh it's probably gonna be illumination movies next because god do i have a lot to say on those movies okay bye [Music] [Applause] you
