1190 wlib is your gospel inspiration and information station i am lady nicity niecy tribbett holding it down right here in the wlib studio so excited i am so souped today you guys just don't know this is just a moment in my life to be able to sit with new york's number one best-selling author oh my god bishop t.d jakes how are you sir i'm great it's so good to be with you oh it's awesome to be with you i'm so honored and humbled oh thank you oh my god oh my god now you're here in the city to promote your book uh called destiny and that's on the heels of instinct yes so how does the two tie in well you know they are connected i think in many ways they are twins if they were been birthed they would have been twins because instinct really helped you to discover who you were at your core and what you had to bring to the table destiny deals with where are you going with what you have it's about progress it's about moving forward it's about stepping into your purpose and moving to your destination do our destiny ever change does it come with i think we have detours um you know in the book i talk about detours i think we have setbacks i think we have obstacles we have roadblocks we find ourselves in situations where we have to reroute ourselves in order to overcome the obstacles of divorce downsizing lost job loss houses sometimes lost confidence it can be the kind of setback that sets you back for a minute but every setback is a setup for comeback and if you understand that you can rise above it and still reach your destination how do you know when you've reached it how do you know when you have when the grinding stops when you when you find a place where you i'm not saying you don't have problems i'm not saying you don't have issues but the problems are within your capacity when you have fulfillment when you are feel full of what your life demands you can supply that demand and be fulfilled by it you become frustrated when you've built a life that demands things that are not in your inventory the frustration is your life is pulling things out of you that's not really you you know that you're there when life is still demanding still challenging but hey i'm stocked for it i'm built for it it's in my inventory it's within my reach i can do it a lot of us are frustrated because our life has been become contorted by other people and we have responded to their needs at the expense of finding out where we needed to be hmm that's so exciting with you you are so involved in so many things pastoring movie producer you know and you know arthur how do you find the time and i know you heard this question so many times to be a family man to do that adequately to give them the time that they need to give your church the time and also to promote a book how do you how do you filter all that out well it was tough it was tough when i had kids at home my kids are grown now i'm in the grandparents stage it's getting a lot easier but when the kids were home you had to play the game differently my wife was the superhero of the house she was the glue that held things together i was the one who made things happen and did the provision but my wife certainly has a huge part to play in holding the house together and i think that's important but i'm not any different from anybody else who has other activities or people sing in the choir and still work a job and still have something on the side and selling ribs on saturday night you got to do what you got to do to make it work and i think because i came from parents who were grinding and hustling and working and always doing something i didn't expect to just sit down on the couch and wait for the next sunday this morning to come you have a tv show tell us about this yeah i have a tv show we did a test tour uh for a month uh four weeks of television 20 shows that we shot and played every day in atlanta in dallas in cleveland and in minneapolis it went really good we're mad it wasn't in new york i know you watch it on youtube here's the worst part i filmed it here what i filmed it here i was here for almost a month every day here and a lot of people from new york came out yeah but it was filmed here and uh in series uh in syndication i don't know whether it would be here or dallas or california but those are my three choices yet to be negotiated but it is very very close to syndication it has been greenlighted for syndication and if it sells to the way we think it is i'll be on 2016 in the fall what makes your show different from everyone else you know i'm different you you only bring to the table what you are yeah you know yes yes and uh the show is unique because it's not about celebrities it's about struggles it's not about fame it's about falling it's about finding your way back after you fall it's about working with drug addicts and families in crisis and stories like i did with angie stone and her daughter very powerful story like that stories like i did with the braxton stories like uh i did with trayvon martin's mother and sandra bland and all of the parents of of of black children who have been victimized by what we call uh justice and uh and and really getting down into the nuts and bolts of it from a very unique perspective because i am a pastor i've been counseling for 40 years so i bring a unique perspective to it you know i'm going to ask you this and we'll go back and let you go with the bill that has been passed down by supreme court how do you as a pastor handle that if there should be a point where a gay couple would come to you and ask you to marry them right now at this point that's something that i wouldn't do but that doesn't mean that they can't go outside of me and do that and the supreme court was not legislating that churches would have to do it they just made it possible that gay people who chose to do so could go to some other facility if they like and there are some churches that will do it but right now the potter's house is not one of them okay because there are a lot of pastors who have put this as some type of disclaimer in their by-laws right to protect them for that from that yeah yeah absolutely that's good that's good you know religion religion doesn't agree we don't agree about communion we don't agree about what day to worship or we don't agree about a whole lot of things and that's why protecting religious freedom is important that's what this country was founded on but i think that we have to share freedoms with other people who have other views agnostics atheists and other people the country needs to do that but when i come into my sanctuary i can be guided by my convictions about the bible as i understand them yes and that understanding evolves and it doesn't evolve through outside pressure it evolves through prayer and study and a deeper understanding of god's word so your thoughts on kim walker who took a stand against signing licenses because of her religious belief i don't know that i'm qualified to make a statement about that because there are a lot of issues to consider she has a personal religious conviction to which she wants to adhere and she has a job to do i'm not sure at what point you need to step down from the job if the job is going in a direction you don't want to go i'm not sure that my faith can control my office when i work in a secular environment i'd have to look at the employee's manuals and bylaws and all of that to see whether she's within her rights or not but many of us find ourselves in situations where our job wants us to do something that we're uncomfortable with and we have to decide do i want to work here do i want to stay the office can't always change the policy to fit the person awesome awesome and you you're a voice to the nation and what you say you know weighs a lot on people so i just wanted to hear your opinion on it and i appreciate that what's your favorite meal oh what is my favorite food you know food baby i eat everything it'd be much easier to tell you what i don't eat uh everybody's teasing me though because just last week on instagram i i did some cooking i don't cook a lot now but my wife was out of town and i didn't want her to come in town and have to cook so i did some cooking and i put it on instagram and everybody was tripping because i i cooked neck bones oh my god and and uh sauteed spinach and fried potatoes real country real country but it was real good awesome awesome that sounds good what's your favorite movie my favorite movie uh a beautiful mind i think might always be my my favorite movie it was it spoke to me in such a powerful way wow maybe because i'm crazy favorite actor who that's tough denzel is hard to beat for me i think the the greatest actors are the actors who can act without lines when your face can talk with your lips you're still you are a master at what you do and i don't know anybody who can do that any better than he can turn his head and look at you and never open his mouth and convey thought without speech that to me is acting at its best wow would you ever run for a political office never in my life really if i come back in another life i wouldn't do it you don't ever have to worry about me doing that really i like myself too much to go through that i am more worried about the overall structure of our government than i am who's in office because you can change the chef all day long but if the oven is broke there's going to be something wrong with the food and i think we have a system that is becoming increasingly dysfunctional and does not reflect what the country needs right now i think we need to take a look at our criminal justice system take a look at how we're funding education i think we need to take a look at our health care program and continue to amend it until we work it into something that really does work i think we need to take a a look at how companies and private sector corporations can control through lobbyists the policies of our politicians until we fix the oven we can get any chef we want but we're not going to get the result coming out the kitchen that we'd like to see wow powerful thank you so much sir it's really for stopping by and giving us time we love you so much thank you and we get you godspeed love everybody listening all right god bless thank you
