Bill Stafford // Romans 6:1-11

I mentioned several a long time ago or few weeks ago I should say that Richard Owen Roberts not the Richard Roberts on TV but Richard Owen Roberts the elderly man that knows that has been praying for revival in America for so many years Crisco filled asked him if he didn't get disappointed or discouraged praying for revival so long he said he lived in expectation of suddenly and there are so many suddenly in the Bible well this is one of those suddenly times for trosset Eve Aptus Church you know some time ago while we were an expectation that pill Stafford would be with us on a Sunday but then because of his wife's illness he was not able to be with us and so this just came to pass yesterday that he was able to be with us today and so I am so glad that he is able to be with us today and just the last moment and so we're just thrilled and let's just give him a good tri-city welcome home he is a wonderful brother for the bill come and bring us a word from God [Applause] it's only 79 years old and so he's just a kid so be nice to him almost Eddie unfolding you dis not there yet I hope you get there amen you need the journey if you'd never live by faith you will when you get this old amen jesus is alive but he's alive in me right now in his own person in the person of the Holy Spirit and we're going to talk about it today and pray they were gonna have an awakening but now brother roofing is a gracious guy he's a kind person he's a loving person he'll go he'll go around the block in order to straighten out the situation to my advantage but to tell you the truth I got the wrong date down I'm not supposed to be here listen to me listen to me really October the 7th and I'm gonna so tell the whole truth because he's so kind he'll make you think I'm still the most wonderful guy in the world and I can tell you I'm not I'm telling you if it wasn't for Jesus you wouldn't even won't be around me amen so I was bored to be October the 7th I didn't erase his name on this date that we're we changed it and so I called him and said I'll be there Sunday he said and it was on his answering machine and I said he didn't you know I figured he is right until he called me back and said I think that maybe we're a little out of sorts here but I'm gonna tell you I believe it's the will of God didn't that just like him amen he'll turn it in the godliness and listen that's a mark of a man of God to put up with a dumb preacher like me Amen you say man because when I friend you probably wish you had because I'm preaching to me hoping that you need what I made I haven't arrived in the journey I'm still in pursuit of him and I want you to know the glory of it is is what he uses in spite of us for his glory and that's the thing we need to realize today because we need a real genuine personal revival I need it and you need it because you've never faced for your go to face if America keeps down the true road they're going now and the only people that will have an answer are believers who are from another country who can live the life that Christ is in us and walk through the middle of Hell singing Amazing Grace because we are overcomers because of Jesus Christ turn to Romans chapter 6 and I'll get busy and pray that the anointing of God will be on me today if he is and I won't be long I promise but if he is I may be long you didn't get it but I took a shot at it anyway Romans chapter 6 and verse 1 what shall we save them shall we continue in sin that grace may abound abound god forbid how shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein no you not there's so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father even so also wish to walk in the newness of life for if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death we shall also be in the likeness of his resurrection knowing this that our old man is crucified with him that the body of sin might be destroyed that word means idols are put in neutral if you say it's destroyed you'll think you can do anything because you didn't mean to do it but you did do it but you'll never walk with God do you know that you didn't need to do it because you didn't know better and admit that it's sin if it's not of God amen and you that hadn't confessed lately undoubtedly you're holding on to a lot of stuff that room needs to be confessed now sin in me was not destroyed my ability to the sin was not destroyed I received a new nature a brand new nature when I was born again so we'll talk about it in the minute and he says so we wouldn't serve sin for he that is dead is freed from sin now if we be dead with Christ we believe we shall also live with him knowing that Christ being raised from the dead died out no more death hath no dominion over him for him that he died he died in the sin once but in that he liveth he liveth unto God likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed the sin but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord and as far as I'll read and I may proceed a little further in a couple of more things I've learned a long time ago in preaching the Word of God that there's things that I don't understand these things that my mind cannot grasp I can't even figure it out oh I didn't know you spoke turn it on house oh just add them automatically I'd get a volume a man but anyway Here I am you hear me wow you look better even now alright amen Romans five is a picture of salvation when it talks about we're hopeless godless helpless good-for-nothing and nothing that God can even invest in totally dead in our sins that's the fifth chapter of rule and all these people who think that God got something when they got you he got nothing and everything we are he has to be in us and reproduce through us his life because our life is not reproducible without sin amen and I can Amen myself I just told the truth you say I don't understand I don't either but God said it and you know what he did he let me know about it and you only let me know is that nobody can stop me from walking with God except me you can blame the preacher the deacon the Sunday school teacher what somebody said about you I Got News for you get in the ministry they'll find a lot about you amen and but I just rather throw them a catalogue so they could know it all that way they can pick one every day until how sorry I am but that won't work because I don't live the old man I live then you man and when I relapsed to the old man a sin and when I don't confess it I keep that sin I must be adequate and quick to make sure that anything that comes out of my life that's not of God has to be produced by my own will and by my own choice which means our sin and we got to understand this because we're facing a time in America whenever the only hope for the world is going to be the church but not just the church but the church that knows how to trust God believe God and let the world know you're not my supply you're not in my course you're not my force I have a new life and it's his life in me right now amen and I pray that for the goodness sakes you'll hear me and let's go through it real quickly about our gift as dry as I am your hope it's not but anyway I hope my preaching is not dry if it is I'll quit I'll quit early chapter 6 jumps right into something beyond salvation and it's really how to live sanctified what is the sect what is sanctification what is God talking about when he jumps from the fact that in Romans 5 I am a helpless godless sinner I received salvation and I have life and I have life abundantly but what it jumps in the Romans 6 to show us is what that life is all about and how to keep appropriating it so we can keep in victory and we never arrived in the Christian journey for you this thing's salvations on arrival that's why your mean is a snake salvation is not an arrival it's a beginning of one who came to inhabit me new life new love new everything it's the life of Christ reproduced in me because salvation is the divine implantation an impartation of divine nature in a human body but the sad thing is he didn't change our capacity to sin the old man is still there ladies and gentlemen we have refused to accept that I can't help the way I am I you say why because I think they're in the minister I've been hurt I think somebody says some about me I've been lied on I've had big uns than one that killed me but not loved me and I've had a lot of things that happen in the ministry and I tried and Front and I worked at it and I got disgusted I said why don't they like me until I found out there's nothing about me to like it's not me that is it it's me that Christ wants to teach how to die to me so Christ and his life can overcome and resurrect me to a life I can't live and neither can you that's why God made it that way so nobody could glory and we all have to come to church depending on God believe in God and walk in that door full of God why so the atmosphere will be permeated with a presence and power of God over brother bill I think didn't get much out of message maybe you didn't have nothing to get it with and it the way we do oh he's not my kind well who said you had one our kind is the same it's Jesus in you and Jesus in me knocking me out of me and knocking you out of you to where we can't put up with our stinking self life whenever it's sin and can produce nothing but I have a new life in the divine impartation and implantation of divine nature who is the Holy Spirit who came to inhabit me so I could live godly how do you live godly quit letting everything your flesh produces be your lifestyle it's gotta be dead too so that Christ can live through me what Stafford can't live and people even like me and I can't brag about it why because if it wasn't for Jesus nobody would want me nobody would want to be around me and I wouldn't be an instrument for God I didn't arrive when I got saved I got on a journey to where God can bring me to sanctification godliness to where when I do sin I can't stand it amen all right now look at look at this verse no I know you're not that admit so many of you ever were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized doing this death and here's what I like we take people in the baptismal pool and we just sort of duck them and say boy we got one more to report to the convention well are they going to think we're a great church if we got number timings you baptize that means you baptize that's not the issue the issue is that baptism is whenever a person is saved they go through the process of showing to everybody that when you see me baptized I am being buried the old man I'm burying what I used to be I'm living what Christ is in me that's the only way our church can survive that's the only unity you can have you can't produce unity with people they're trying the Christian life is not trying the Christian life is trusting and believe in God to reproduce in me his life his life not mine improved why you can't improve us hello ain't getting much help why because we have got churches packed with people trying to be a Christian but they will not die to the old man and they're trying to incorporate themselves without learning to die and say I'm sorry Barrett if we're with him in baptism what are you saying I'm buried with Christ then raised to walk in the newness of life that's what baptism really is it's me showing to the world I'll never be the same again I'll never live the same again I don't care if I lose my temper and if I whatever I do I will make it right whatever is wrong in my life I will now deal with it according to the Word of God and when I come to church I ask God your Lord show me me don't show me my brother or my sister or that drunk back there show me me and show me what I'm harboring because I like me I think I'm all right I think I'm pretty good we'll get over it amen all the trouble in the church and in the believers because we don't know that I'd buried with him and now I'm raised with him to walk in what newness newness of life amen that's why I love people I don't even like why because my love can't do it I ain't got it I'd rather tell them what I think about him and don't y'all look so spiritual you just did that to your husband this morning amen what are you saying we're trying to look holy in that totally listen holiness is the work of God in me bringing me to an awareness of my helpless estate and nothing I can do spiritually without the resurrected power of God performing through me a life that I can't live but he will live through me if I will get off of the throne and let him have the glory you said but somebody said something about me but probably not as bad as you are they don't know at all what fella walked up to me would not long ago and he said I've heard that moan you I said you want to list he said Hart I said fella if you knew how sorry I could be you would wonder why God even saved me because I still have the potential to sin and I will if I don't see myself as a total failure good-for-nothing amen and my only ability my only power whatever I am I am because of the resurrected Christ and that puts everybody on the same level and when that bunch of folks like you start saying wait a minute I'm not going to church to get I'm going to church to worship and praise and love the Lord and praise God you say how do you feel don't matter if I'm half dead I still praise God why I've got resurrection power that's kind of weak but I told the truth anyway why I'm glad that God brought me to this place because the first thing about sanctification is you finding out that you've been buried with him in Baptism and that when you raised up out of that water you're looking to the people and saying I no longer will be what I used to be you're going to see a different temper or different personality and you're going to see me when I can't let anything get by that I know it's totally produced by my flesh in my opinion and one of the biggest problems in the church is opinions well let me give you mine ain't got none why don't matter you can't stop me from walking with God unless I let your opinion hurt myself life and I defend myself we've got church members defending themselves who have no clue about the spirit for your life not nothing and we're wondering what's wrong in America I'll tell you what's wrong in America the church is living on a lot of self life that needs to be put to the cross died to and say I'm sorry from her attitude I'm sorry for my disposition I'm gonna walk in the newness of life why it's not my life it's his life it's new life he won't Stover come me he wants to show me what he can do through me and I'll never be able to take any glory because I didn't do it he did it because I let him and Obeid died to self and cried out to God in the middle of a country that's dying churches that are trying to change worship into nothing but entertainment never will they said and listened to a message like this but Romans 6 is needed just as bad after almost five and that is die to the old man and everything your opinion produces it's not of God is sin and me also if y'all don't listen little faster I won't be here longer this shape you don't like us I love you oh not with my love cause it wouldn't last I would only love you is long enough to get all the credit of you and say use the cause of why I can't live for God the quarter you hurt me somebody said something about man you did it bless God I'll go to church and I'll sing but bless God I'll never get away come on get over it why you have resurrected life Jesus came to live in you giving you his life in the person and power of the Holy Spirit you said brother but you never had any problems I said but have him God must send me a lot of driving in traffic is enough to make me backslide sitting behind one the other day sitting at the red light and she must have belonged to some organization but anyway she had on her bumper sticker says honk if you love Jesus well she waited through two green lights I'm sitting there needing to go after a while I said bless God I'm on a home I dare you to honk why and I didn't get no love I got a sign she must have been a Baptist called only Baptist can act like that and go back on the front seat on Sunday morning and saying like they're full of God it's no wonder the power of God's not moving to the glory of God the revival and if I've ever seen a time when I wanted to see revival I want to see a moving of God that was shake America and I want to see it in this church where this pastor and you have been faithful over the year you've stayed by the stuff now let's believe God that this church will be a lighthouse and a powerhouse in the days ahead for people to come to not to hear people but to meet were the holy God and learn how to walk in the fullness of the Holy Ghost amen we we can't just keep doing what we're doing same MO same MO I've got to doubt to me amen is there what you do I just honk and she gave me a sign and I just world around him now which which part of that was Jesus you said well I've got my right side of the road no only right I got is to die so Christ can be seen right and by the way if you're not gonna live it don't put a bumper sticker on all right amen amen I say well you preach too hard ladies and gentlemen we're in the throes of a disaster we're in trouble in America churches are organizing churches merely to drag a crowd to get a crowd and they know how to perform and how to entertain and they know how to get them but I'm gonna tell you something there's no entertainment in walking with God until he is Lord of all then its glory no matter where you are why I'm a total victor because the new birth was the divine implantation and impartation of divine nature who's the Holy Spirit the other comforter who is the Jesus in me to give me victory in the middle of the biggest enemy in the world why because I'm here and by the way you say he'll kill you all he does is send me the glory is all I want to live not when you find out how sorry you are and how great Jesus is then you'll only want to live to be an expression of His grace and love and to touch people for God we got so much performance that's not anointed no power just entertainment we need a touch of God right so newness of life now watch this enough I got a hurry then he says if we've been planted together in verse five and the likeness of his death then don't you know that the old man is crucified that's not your husband that's the old nature in you has been crucified with him why so that the body of sin may be rendered addled and put in neutral and will not go in gear unless I put it in gear but I still can sin by the way this is where the Roman Catholic Church misses it because they believe that Virgin Mary is deity they believe that she birthed the Lord Jesus and that makes her very divine Mary was a sinner Mary was a sinner saved by grace God used the Holy Spirit the perfect one to be the seed in the womb of Virgin Mary Jesus produced the seed by past her sin nature and brought into this world the perfect Lamb of God by the by the work of the Holy Ghost and ladies and gentleman to glorify Mary is godlessness amen Jesus is the one she was an instrument thank God for that but the Holy Ghost did it and he fathered him so that I could stand here today and tell you salvation is not something I have it's a person who lives in me the Holy Spirit amen and if he's not in you you're not saved amen you can try to be religious play the game but you're not saved unless the Holy Spirit comes to live in you now let me let me show you this in verse 11 a verse in that verse 9 when verse 11 knowing this that Christ Christ being raised from the dead out no more death don't have any more dominion over him for any died in the sin once but now he lives them to God now his world hears the word likewise since he died there be no more death he's alive forevermore and that he's raised from the dead death don't have it in dominion over him he died to sin once not he liveth he lived under God now you say well oh let's consorted but wait a minute he says in verse 11 likewise reckon you also yourselves to be dead indeed in the sin but alive unto God through Jesus Christ the Lord you know what the word record means count on it make it count count on that through the imputation and divine work of Jesus at the cross he allowed himself to go to Calvary surrender to the cross and on the cross God unleashed on him the wrath of God for all sinners who syllable will that have come the wrath of God Jesus took he took soul that I could be born again and have him to live a victorious Christian life if he's not in you you can play all you want to play singing all you wanna sings preach all you wanna preach but if he's not in you in the new birth you are bound for a damnation that you wish you had never done he came in me to take me over by knocking me out of me and making me repent try out the God because of my temper I'm well and I went to left and drive to Ferg pasture when I was just a young one and I inherit the Deacons and some of them didn't like me sweet as I am but I never will forget Leonard cronin Leonard didn't like me so he come to deacons meetings and he was sit in the corner like this that's the way I mean he saved he said can a saved person keep on acting like that not unless God deals with them in chastisement because God gave you the victory over that and gave me the victory over there and if I don't confess it that sin will conquer me and I will miss God and won't live to the expectancy of what God's will is for my life so I've said the other they can say well why don't you put him out I said no keep him in here this is the spiritual but let's go stay full of God and when he sits here like that God's gonna sit down on this deacons meeting one of these days and heavens gonna break out and sure enough I shook hands with him I was nice to him I loved him not in my love I didn't have it but I loved him in God's love thank God for God's love right amen and listen everything went good till the Sunday morning his daughter came to the pulpit and haline pronin walked up and grabbed me around the neck and said God's calling me to the mission field I've got to go to Nicaragua single only daughter he had Leonard begin to get shaky he put her dollar bill in the offering plate wadded up in fifty different ways and now that's the ocean why are y'all out there so long he said what we're trying to get that dollar bill loose so we can see what it is I said you were kidding so I saw it was him while I was sitting behind one then I saw you hit the is about this big around hit the plate bounced about that high and I said Linda would you see me in the office after church I said I want to talk to you he said okay so he walked in after church I said Leonard I love you and I'm glad you're still in the Deacon B but I want to ask you a question why do you want that dollar bill up and put it in the offering plate and the ushers miss half of the sermon he said I don't want my right hand to know what my left ones are doing I said Leonard neither one of them would get shocked if they found it out amen right you said you shouldn't have said that wait a minute God will use the person you need to bring you to repentance when you know they love you but they're not gonna side with you because they don't you to live that life of defeat and sorrow and hatred self-centeredness it's meal amen and I'm glad for the people he run by me to make me so mad I could spit amen and God would say I run them by you because you need to get right with God amen everybody has to have God to put him in whatever is necessary to get them sick of themselves and alive to God but it's not I it's Christ that's way nobody can walk out glowing in the service you pat me on the back and say ball that's wonderful I Got News for you I have the capacity to be mean as the devil at any given moment were it not for the Christ who lives in me and for the rest of you trying to look so spiritual just get over it and cry amen why let's get honest buried with him reckon the old man dead what does that mean when you sin the Holy Spirit's gonna what is sin tempered jealousy gossip greed unkindness tanginess harboring ill feelings or you know trying to get even all these old self sins that that's what they are then are killing folks is just stuff that keeps us from being full of God and I want to praise the Lord for one thing that he give me the people necessary to teach me how to reckon and that means he substitutionary have substituted for me so that I could count on what he did as appropriation to my life in his life in me so there are sin and I know it I'm going to say Jesus that wasn't you and me that was me I can still sin but I'm sick of it I'm tired of it forgive me forgive me you wonder what we need in the church is a good Holy Ghost revival of saying the Lord I had men on the alternator's and I've got so much in my life I need to deal with don't worry about what people think about you think about the revival that's going to happen when we get right with God and sure enough Leonard got right with God with his doctor came my daughter came to the altar and we started an offering on a Sunday we needed 15 thousand more dollars to get her to the mission field so she could buy her own car and we started the offering and Leonard jumped up before it started he said brother bill I can't tell this from that crying brother bill could I help just a word I said what are you gonna say he said brother be able to look at me I'm sick of me and I didn't know you're gonna take my daughter my only daughter to the mission field brother bill I've been in misery trying to get this thing together and come to find out I wouldn't let Jesus be the Lord of my life but today I've got two checks in my hand to catch up on my stingy lifestyle one for my daughter one for the church man I'm telling you when he gave him one for the daughter I said that's glorious when he gave one from the church he really got right with God amen but revival broke out we were there two four o'clock in the afternoon people would go home and and get their loved ones they go and get their sons and daughters the glory of God came down the power of God fell and that said let's and drive on a course of revival because I'm a good preacher no any bush will do if God can control it and make it confess keep it clean keep it godly and somebody says you're sorry tell them you don't know how much I am but thank God God love me Jesus died for me I'm saved by grace hallelujah amen for the Lamb of God now you listen to me this church has potential powerful potential it hasn't reached it near what is gonna reach if we can quit looking at anything except what can God do through me if I would let Jesus be my life and when I sin with my temper jealousy gossip spending this or whatever may God forgive me and may I confess it get it right with God and come to church a clean vessel hungry for God and hungry for revival that's what God wanted me to say to you today you say you preach in to us and though I'm preaching to me hoping you can get in on it because I'm a sorry scoundrel were it not for the indwelling Christ who substituted for me on the cross paid my debt so that whenever I sinned I could count on his finished work to forgive me even as a Christian amen reckon the old man did I know you're alive - Jesus Christ can we do that today and for you that are here playing Church for God's sakes walk away from that get on your face and say Jesus I want you to come and live in me today I'm a sinner I confess my sins I want you to come and impute to me divine life so I can live and overcome me and then why don't we just say to those that are saved what is it in your life that keeps you from having the Spirit of God to fill you and pour through you spiritual power deal with it whatever it is if it's produced by self you say but my daddy was this way he don't want you like daddy he won't you like Jesus am i right let's stand together that's as far as I'll go every head bowed every eye closed we're going to sing in just a moment I never preached this but what I don't get to tears because of the many years I didn't know this truth and how to appropriate Christ how to deal with my stinking self I'd get hurt by people not hold on to it I could remember it forever but oh thank God when you wind up and find out get over it get free in Jesus let Christ be Lord of your life let's live victorious living let's come to church full of God Father in Jesus name I pray you won't let lost people leave here people that are not saved because they're trying to be a Christian and may you let them know you're ready to and dwell them if they'll confess their sin repent and turn to the life of Christ there's work on the cross that he paid our sin-debt saved people today and then bring us who are believers to the point of surrender confession repentance and clean up our lives come to church full of God and let us see revival shake this whole countryside by the power of God and we'll give you all the praise and all the glory in Jesus [Music]
