oh the first Mallet in America went to work on the bno in 194 number 2400 was an 0660 it worked well on the flat but it couldn't navigate the curves on sandpatch at much more than a walk without climbing the sides of the rail a pony truck was quickly added between 1916 in 1921 the bno built 75 class El compound 288 o Mallet compounds used the same steam Twice first on small Barrel cylinders on the rear engine and then again on two huge barrels FR engine compound engine were expensive to maintain and by 1930 all but a handful were reworked into so-called simple articulators with live steam delivered to all four cylinders when World War II struck the B&O was caught with a fleet of articulated locomotives most of them more than a quarter of a century old they wanted diesels but the war production board turned them down the answer was 3 2884 the legendary EM1 which you see in the tapate these Yellowstone type locomotives built in 1944 1945 were the last of this wheel Arrangement ever manufactured they marked the peak of steam locomotive development and had virtually every mon modern device each axle including the tender Wheels had roller bearings yard men called them creepers they were so agile that three men could actually push them on level track their original Province were the heavy grades in West Virginia Cranbury and Terra Elda between Kaiser and Grafton they conquered the Fain 17m grade with 1500 tons of empty Hoppers without a distance eastbound from Kaiser to Brunswick they could handle 4500 tons here their huge fireboxes gave them extra speed when the alagan grades were dieselized they were shipped ran ore and coal to the Eerie Lake ports from Wheeling sounds of the EM1 Baltimore and Ohio articulat were provided by the railroad record Club in Hawkins Wisconsin the EM1 was the pride of the B and regarded by most B personnel as their favorite locomotive but oddly despite its huge capacities it was one of the smallest 28 fors ever built size was dictated by tunnel restrictions [Music] [Music] oh [Music] w oh [Applause] oh [Music] [Music] r [Music] [Music] [Music] I [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] he [Applause] d [Music] d [Music] that made The Marvelous EM1 something of an underdog and it wasn't even a Yellowstone just a 2666 but what a locomotive probably the most powerful ever built fully loaded engine and tender weighed more than a million pounds the enormous Firebox and boiler could generate more steam than any engine before or since there was a six- wheeel truck beneath the Firebox and an unusual combination of six and 8 Wheels trucks under the tender their total weight equal that of the Union Pacific 4884 big boys the Virginia monster two twos sound as if they ought to be bigger actually they had larger boilers but their wheels were only 56 in in diameter 11 in less than a chesse [Music] [Music] 2666 [Music] it was not until after these huge locomotives had been displaced by diesels on their regular run CLI and forged to Russell Kentucky the main line across the allig mountains that the CNO realized what an extraordinary locomotive they had on their hands slow slogging over Mountain grades left a large amount of their power unused it wasn't until they were Unleashed on the relative flat of Central Ohio that the CN finally saw it had a high-speed Freight locomotive on its hands some have compared a single 2666 to six ft units for Speed and power between 1941 and 1948 the CN ordered 60 of them the last articulated locomotives built by Lima 16004 which we see in this tape has been [Music] chams were made from a gondola on the rear of a fan trip in connection with the 1957 nrhs convention in Rono the train went down the branch from Bluefield to maaka and returned to Rono on the Virginia Railroad [Music] [Applause] [Music] he [Music] yeah [Music] this shot of the noran western power Town Arrow was made from the Virginia's great Trestle at Glen [Music] ly [Music] just east of Bristol the nor and Weston had a branch that ran from Abington to West Jefferson here's the daily mixed train headed south for West Jefferson when Branch line railroading was still an important part of life in Mid [Music] America [Music] yeah [Music] [Music] [Music] pacifics were a rare breed on the noric and Western here too double head on the Valley [Music] branch this is where the jewel Valley branch
