Big Baits For Big Pike

oh wow oh man i was not ready for that this is a big fish that was such a bad hook set oh this is a big fish guys oh man it hasn't done anything yet come on let's see this beast oh my [Music] hike on it's like second or third cast we're back in the aluminum craft we're fishing for fall pike if you remember if you follow along on my videos i did a video very early in the season using this same bait it's called the fire tail the headbanger lures we've seen you do a lot of stuff with their baits and we're back same bait same target specie the northern pike we are now a couple hours north kenora kind of in the middle of nowhere this is um a yearly camping trip sam's family does and uh they normally time it around lake trout spawn just before season closes i had a a moment to sneak out with the cameras and here you are we're looking for a big gator sam's uncle used to guide up here and apparently there's some big pike in this lake so done some late trout fishing did some gross hunting but now we're looking for a big old northern pike this weather is just absolutely phenomenal now we're on ooh lost them there's a lot of pike kicking around normally like late season the pike will kind of move out of the weeds and into the rocks but i think they're still using the weeds with how warm it's been the water's still like 57 degrees i think so it's not too cold to fish weeds just got to make sure they're not like completely dead i mean pike will use dead weeds but the greener the weeds the better and i've noticed on this lake there's weeds like pretty main lakes so anyways we're gonna hop around enjoy the beautiful weather maybe catch a gator that's more what we're looking for the green stuff the green stuff is alive it's holding the ecosystem it's holding the bait fish which is holding the perch which is holding the big angry northern pike this is when you can catch some of the fattest pike of the year when i got it up north it was always the last couple weeks of the year you would just catch some of the biggest fish in the spring you can catch a lot of fish but as it gets later in the year you catch less and less and less but the average side just got bigger fish got fatter it's one of my favorite times to fish for a pike obviously you're not sight fishing them as often the odd time you'd see them sitting in the cabbage but you're just fishing a weed bed so you know obviously i have the luxury of livescope so i can see the weed beds ahead but i mean weeds grow on sand so when you're looking at the map you want to pay attention to like you know sandy saddles beaches that's obviously a great spot and then i kind of look for the biggest spawning areas like where you'd picture to see them in the spring and then kind of look for sand or spots there may be weeds nearby one more cast we're going to keep on moving [Music] all right guys here are my two setups this is what i've been throwing most the time so far this is a headbanger fire tale 180 pound floral leader i got 40 pound mainline braid about as light as i would go eight foot swim bait rod moderate action this is an eight foot musky rod with a buck tail on here uh i think this is a 100 pound braid a little bit of a bigger set up this is more typical musky setup but yeah between these two big plastics and a bucktail it's pretty much all you need for for late summer fall pike um something that they can feel something big is gonna help target in on those big fish because they're looking for a big meal but enough talking we'll get back to casting [Music] oh it just got hammered not tiny not tiny not big but not tiny oh look at this oh my goodness oh this fish just wants it that was one of the most aggressive pike i've ever seen that was insane wish i had the head cam on that fish was fired up that was one of the nicer ones i've seen we'll catch that fish yet oh that might have been him i just lost one didn't sting him too hard [Music] oh that's a nice fish nice nothing wrong with that i think she used all of her energy in that jump nice pike guys fish care is so important keep that fish in the net while you unhook them you're mad aren't you i know okay we got the hook out this fish has some weird markings on it there we go beautiful northern ontario northern pike [Music] she's gone i've shown this before but this kind of harness breaks off and i added a weight on the front headbanger is known for having that erratic action with their different cup lips but i put a little one-ounce pyramid weight just to fish it a little bit faster if i was fishing you know shallower and slower and wanted a little more action i would definitely be using that lip but for just covering a bunch of ground because i think these fish are going to be pretty hungry and pretty dumb i'm putting a weight on french is a great way to get it down pushing these hooks back in i like to hook both of them into the body so they don't foul and there you have pike candy oh that one just rocked it and after a bite i always like to finish that cast otherwise you bring it in to look at your bait and that pike is falling right to the boat and you probably would have eaten it if you would have kept it at a slower pace another follow oh got him didn't get him sorry he didn't get him we got nice green weeds in like 12 feet of water here so i'm gonna try to stay right on the edge and i think i think we're gonna get a big girl some beautiful weeds in deep water deeper weeds are obviously better in the fall time because the fish are just generally sliding out a bit yeah we got nice green weeds in like 10 11 feet of water that's what we call cash money homie oh my goodness did you guys see that suite i don't care what you say pike are sweet we're fishing a saddle so this is an island it's mainland behind and there's a shallow sand saddle which is just a very typical place to have weeds and to have fish do the weeds of the fish come first that's the question the spot is unreal so much weed so far out here it's all 10 feet of water just thick thick weeds this is a little more main lake which i like too oh wow oh man i was not ready for that this is a big fish that was such a bad hook set oh this is a big fish guys oh man it hasn't done anything yet come on let's see this beast oh my oh that's big oh that's big i was not expecting this it's just going up for a little afternoon session we got us a big gator i can't even see the bait this fish just absolutely inhaled it that's a big pike guys oh she's thick wow that's a big gator she hasn't done anything yet is she going to do anything i want to netter if she's green i feel like she's going to do something right by the boat man she's thick okay we're just going to net her oh she barely fit wow that's a big pike guys this is a big fall pike wow all right guys we got the hook out we're gonna throw it on the bump board real quick i'll give you a look guys that is a big big pike right there unreal okay i'm gonna throw it on the board we're gonna get this baby back 41. there she goes boom oh man that as soon as i set the hook i knew it was a different fish and i didn't get a good hook set on that fish and um she had the hooks pretty deep i had to cut one hook on the outside because got it wrapped in the net and i needed long pliers short pliers would not have worked with that fish so get the princess auto buy yourself some bolt cutters some pliers and you just got to be prepared for that because that fish it took longer than i wanted to it did it did a bad wrap in the net i'd way rather mangle my bait and hurt a big fish like that but uh we lost one hook of six points so i'm okay with that i'll probably just keep fishing with it like this but i made it right there [Applause] [Music]
