all right so grateful for your presence and for the next several weeks I'm going to be teaching on foundational principles I know that didn't sound fascinating people don't get excited about it but what I learned they know about the Lord is he he reveals newer deeper things to us when we have an understanding of the prior thing did he want to teach us some of us haven't been able to go to the next level of comprehending and understanding certain things because we haven't got being past the first grade look at you they say you ain't passed the first grade stop trying to get Graduate Studies and you still in the first grade amen praise the Lord glory to God bless his name and I I feel compelled to do a couple of things one you know we were moving into this dimension of doing life together but what we're really after is you being pastors in your own house I'm after you not having to call to pass but you know the Scriptures well enough that if somebody comes to you with an issue of question or concern a thought that you have the capacity and the ability with your own study and understanding of the Scriptures that you'll you'll know how to respond and handle for a long time in church people would talk to their friends and say well I don't know where it is in the Bible but you just come talk to the past and I'm telling y'all asking me questions all the time and then sometimes people are telling things that's just not true people are making choices and decisions and acting in ways that's not biblical and I think it's just critically important that as we go I believe God's taking us to higher levels and it's important that we have our core people understand basic truths what is repentance what is faith toward God what does it take to get save is it just faith alone the Bible says the devil's belief you notice how to eight minutes again lower and lower and lower so come on I want us to spend these next few weeks just diving in to these foundational principles what is resurrection is it dead when does the resurrection happen who gets resurrected eternal judgments who stands in the judgment how do what do we get judged for how do we get judged laying on of hands what does that mean does it matter who lays their hands on me it sure does we have people who go out and pay for a minister license and then come back and want the pastor here to accept these credentials that you got elsewhere that ain't how it works Bob said don't let your hands suddenly on anybody so we want you to understand these things and the main thing I want is that when the people that you relate with and you talk to you engage with ask you questions I want you to be able to have a solid foundation and understanding so you can give an answer and you don't have to depend on somebody else so it's been 15 years since I've even talked about these things and I'm coming to understand it we got a lot of new people coming into church that don't understand certain things and we got a lot of old people that they forgot some stuff and we got some old people who didn't learn in the first place and they've been here for a long time you know because people come and join the church they think if you think you can mature and all you do is come to church on Sunday you're gravely mistaken thank all 15 year old for that rousing affirmation so tonight we're going to talk about repentance repentance it's a nice graphic right there pastor the way you deacons did that nice job pastor Dee [Applause] let's we're gonna we're gonna just go through and talk about what repentance is tonight now what does it mean to repent how do you know if you have repented and what's the evidence that you've repented and how is repentance Express so we're gonna spend some time delving into this I have a lot of stuff in a lot of scripture so y'all try to keep up with me best that you can all right so repentance is defined both in the old and the new testament and i want to give you the definitions in both i want to start off by telling you that one of the hebrew words for repentance means to grieve to lament it means to have intense or aroused emotions it means that you have a passionate pain about what you've done it means that you ain't sorry you got caught you sorry that you did it in the first place it means and that and that grief is so intense that it brings about a radical change somebody say radical change a radical change in one's attitude towards sin and toward God about how you're gonna respond to God what you're gonna do with God it's a radical change it's an about-face it is a turnaround situation it is a radical change now we see a lot of people who come to church and join the church and get baptized but their life don't change somebody on your row fits that category go ahead and look up and down to see if you can figure out who it is and we we say we look at people when we say well I thought they supposed to be a Christian well the truth of the matter is just coming to church and saying you believe is is not an evidence that that's not going to bring conversion you need you need repentance and faith we will talk about this a little bit later I'm running ahead of my time but but conversion being regenerated and changed comes from you recognizing that you've hurt the heart and that you disobeyed the standard of God that you've missed the mark get you a sinner and you recognize I need to get off that page I need to stop doing what I'm doing I only just keep walking down that road you you can't get change if you think you can just keep heading in the same direction you've been headed in when they talked about repentance in the old script in the Old Testament it was about grief and lamenting and crying and recognizing that you've done wrong and it brings about a radical change in your attitude we live in a culture today where people don't want to change they won't keep they won't keep checking y'all they got real quiet on that point right there they want to keep playing the numbers I'm feeling something over here in this section right here we have to change and God will empower you to change God will give you the strength and the power to change do we have issues we all got issues everybody here got something they life everybody here got something they like that you know needs to change in your life everybody the problem is when you keep justifying and you making it okay and you keep saying well the good Lord anytime somebody call him the good Lord I know they got something going on in their life you got a little bit is going on but I here's what I'm here to tell you I don't care how long you had the issue how difficult it is never fight change you keep having an ticinese I'm gonna get out of this I'm gonna change this have that mindset in that mentality because that's what repentance is repentance is a lifestyle it's not a one-time deal it's not something that you just do when you get saved it's a lifestyle every day the course I get to God he keeps showing me I'm a jacked-up Joker and the closer I get to the Lord and think I got it together then he showed me something else it ain't quite right yeah so repentance means I'm grieving about what I've done that's the Old Testament definition let's look at the New Testament definition it's it's a a to have a feeling of concern or regret I'm sorry I did that I regret it went down that road I'm grieved at I that I walked down that path and it means to change your mind your attitude and your purpose they both mean the same just to find a look different but they both walk down the same path and that same path is I've made a bad choice I did something that I shouldn't have done and I'm making a change that's what repentance means making a change now sometimes when I by the way I didn't go through this today because I assumed job was here Sunday or the last two Sundays Hebrews six talks about the elementary principles of Christ and it lays down six things and the first one is repentance from dead works and that's what we're covering the night repentance and repentance from dead works so this means a total again change of your mind attitude purpose you've got regret and concern now before you before the Holy Spirit convicts you you you you think that what you're doing is alright or you you enjoy it this is the problem look at your neighbors say the problem with you and your sin is that you liked it go ahead tell them you liked it you enjoy a Comeau hot little brother you enjoy it but when the Holy Ghost gets ahold of you you realize that you lose the heart of God you can't keep liking sin dying if I had more members like you I would just be the greatest pass in the world she is so supportive you remember the year mad fact you remember the decade she always encourages me y'all be putting your head down don't say nothing all quiet she said Amen pastor since Amen so it's a change you recognize I need to change they need to drive that home and it's a lifestyle you'll keep hearing me saying that over and over and over again it's a lifestyle it's how we ought to live the Spirit of God speaks to us we want to make a change true repentance goes beyond human reasoning okay true repentance goes beyond human reasoning it must so affect our spirit that I'm you don't have to write all this down because you just slow me down just write diversity you must so affect our spirit that our motives are cleansed and we purpose to bring glory to God whatever the cost even to our own pride that's the deal that's what true repentance goes beyond your human reasoning and logic James chapter 4 let me just read verse 6 through 10 but he gives walk grace therefore he says God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble therefore verse 7 submit to God resist the devil and he will flee from you draw near to God and He will draw near to you cleanse your hands you sinners look at your neighbors they cleanse your hands you sinners and purify your hearts you double-minded versatile verse 9 lament and mourn and weep that you left to be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom lament and mourn and weep that's repentance right there the meant more and weep let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom humble yourselves in the sight of the lord and he will lift you up it is it is that incredible acknowledgment that I've heard the heart of God so what does biblical repentance looks like let's spend a few moments and delve into that and I want to define this is talking about the fruits of repentance because I discovered it sometimes people will tell you that they've repented and they haven't yes the first thing is a change in your values [Music] you're changing your values which you would use value to be important and true what you determine to be true so changing your values you begin to you cannot think like the world and say you've repented because the world makes everything old everything in the world is about the person humanism says whatever makes a person happy is ok but when when you repent you come to grips with it's not about me my purpose the reason God created me was not about my satisfaction go ahead and preach pass I'm doing the best that I can encourage myself it's not about your career your life your name some of my biggest arguments with people in church who get upset because they think they're at a certain level and they ought to be treated a certain way and respected a certain way and people approach them a certain way ain't about you doc it's not about you it's hard to say that you when you become a child of God and you under his authority you understand it ain't about you it's about his kingdom it's about his name it's about his reputation it's not about you your values change I was talking to a relative of mine a long time in church they grew up in church and yet we got him to discussion about abortion and they saw nothing wrong with abortion they didn't see anything wrong with the taking of an innocent life everybody who for abortion is already here y'all missed that let me tell you all that again everybody who is for abortion is already here okay let me go ahead and talk I see right now I might need to break some verses out right here to show y'all that it's is sin it hardly hurts the heart of God when when you were conceived when you got conceived God already knew everything about you at the point you got to see all right let me leave that alone going to the next thing it is number two a change in lifestyle a change in what you do every day a change in how you approach and live your life when you repent you things your values change what's important what makes decisions in your life what you would you think be true that changes but also your lifestyle changes and number three biblical repentance is there's a change in relationships you can't keep hanging out with the same people used to hang out with [Applause] because either you gonna pull them down are they pulling y'all down you have heard me say it out a hundred times and you you got it you know because your values change because your values change because you think differently and what's important to you it's different you're not you don't allow other people's opinions and let me tell you some when you accept Jesus people won't talk about you and they're gonna call your names and you you think you holier than that and you think your Holy Roller now and they're gonna say all of that with you and that's not the way you are you don't think you any better than they are you're just marching under the different banner you're under a different authority and you got to learn to let people talk about you amen let them say what they say when I grew up we used to say sticks and stones may break my bones words don't hurt me say what you want to say about me cuz when it's all said and done you ain't glancing my prayers when it's all said and done you can't deliver me you can't break your chains in my life I'm now listening to a God who has and who can yeah we're serving a god now who Hansen who can and so my relationships changed look at your neighbors say my relationships have changed tell them on the other side my relationships have changed so my values change history fruit my lifestyle change my relationships change number two repentance involves a firm decision of the will somebody say firm decision a part of the problem with with with us --is is we repent until the opportunity to sin again comes back around I can tell when I'm hitting y'all cause y'all get real quiet ya'll don't say nothing yeah when that opportunity comes to do it again you slide right back on the end of you you repented for a day it's not really a firm decision true true repentance is a firm decision it is a firm commitment firms mighty say firm it's a firm decision of your will in Luke chapter 15 we read the story about the prodigal son who decided to go back home yeah he he went back home he said I think I'm gonna go back to my father where he's got hard hands we were doing better than me he made a firm decision it was it was embarrassing and humiliating but he said what I'm gonna go back to my father and say to my father I have sinned against heaven and before you I'm not I'm a longer worried that he be called your son make me like one of your hired hands he had he made a firm decision he made an about-face and I guess it helped it he didn't have no more money hey listen why don't you go ahead and make decision to repent now before God has to take everything away from you before you have to lose your job before you've destroyed your family before you wreck the lives of your kids before you've created heaven why don't you go ahead and repent now because deep inside you know it's wrong y'all hear what I'm saying so go ahead and make that decision and it also means having a renewed of mind change we've already talked about that I want to read Ephesians chapter 4 to you for just a moment repentance involves a firm decision and Ephesians 4 verses 22 and 24 let me read it to you for just a second this is put off concerning your former conduct the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts and be renewed in the spirit of your mind that you may put on the new man which was created according to God in true righteousness and holiness and and and what the scripture says is you you just you put off and put on there's a put off in verse 22 I put on in verse 24 and what makes that happen is verse 23 having your mind changed and one of the reasons we our church spends a lot of resources on classes and discipleship because that's what brings about change changing the way you think our problem is we try to teach people and show you what's right but you so arrogant that you walk I said I ain't doing that [Music] because your flesh liking it go ahead tell your neighbor your fleshlight did it your flesh liked it you enjoy it but the scripture says in Romans 12 we had to be renewed in our thinking our mind that's why Bible study and discipleship programs are so important it helps change the way you think I was I was I had to go to a store one day and you know anytime I go to the store is always a a bet among my kids how long am I gonna be in the store cuz you know we're not going to store hey pastor do you have a minute I need to learn what my wife does because she says she just put her down put her just put the head over haters I need to try that anyway I went to the store D I went to the other day and this lady the firing got to the store she caught him on a parking lot and we got she got to telling me this and that and another and she said I won't go to church so I used to go to your church but I don't go to church no more and I don't need to church I resisted the custom spirit that was rising up inside but some of your friends don't feel like they maybe they had a bad experience at church or maybe you know they went to a church that didn't help them one bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch but what troubled me is when people think that on their own without the benefit of other gifts and other people and the power and presence of God that they can survive this staying at home you cannot become what God wants you to become but sitting at home you can't do it you know why the church is important because their gifts in the church God has put gifts in the church and the purpose of those gifts want to help bring you to maturity and you cannot be exposed to those gifts sitting at home watching television you need to be in relationship somebody say in relationship what helps us become what God wants us to become are they're people that God has put in the body for you for you to stay home by yourself is like the foot saying I don't need the rest of the body I'm just gonna sit over here by myself the foot can't go nowhere by itself the foot needs to make the eyeball king can't do nothing by itself you can pull your eyeball out and sit it on the floor it can't survive by itself it can't seen it by itself it needs help and all you go see is some shoes that's always gonna see a shoe it needs the body they take it away y'all understand what I'm saying you'll faint your fingers your fingers can't do nothing body itself they need to be attached to a hand and your hand needs to be attached to an arm and your arm needs to be attached to a body don't ever let the devil convince you that you don't need the body you need the body [Applause] and a part of what the body does is to help you think right that's why classes are important that's why you know we had a lot of people I'm sorry yeah because that feel I'm going off on I just going off and going off I'm sorry every week some I come up to me can they get counseling good we got a little can't we have a counseling department need one counselor everybody want one-on-one attention see when I take my my take my eyes off it means I'm stepping over here that I'm not gonna be the past I'm gonna be John Tigers over in the Saints up for a minute we have you know so much help for people in the church and if you say you remember this church and United in the ministry not taking no classes wait wait hold it don't shout yet shot when I say this right here if you haven't done what we've instructed you to do in that arena why would we think that you would do what would you should do if we put you in a private town don't come and ask me about counseling if you ain't in no ministry if you ain't November if you ain't take no classes you ain't been in no discipleship program it take everything I see in me not to cuss you out and say [Applause] now the person is faithful in church and faithful and serving and been in the ministry in a two classes and they still feel the need that's a different story it's the people who wants special attention because they special we ain't we are not a mental institution we got some mental people in here but it's all about changing your mind it's all about getting a god thought life it's thinking the way God wants us to think and you ain't gonna get that sitting at home I know I'm preaching to the choir cause y'all are here it's the people who don't come that I'm concerned about who think that they got it all together they smart enough you need help and you need help it's a renewed it is changing your mind somebody look at your neighbor say changing your mind it is getting the mindset that God wants you to have here's a number three underneath this part is God and Abel's us to repent he helps us to repent God will give you the power and the grace to change and that's what I love about God if you make a step toward him he'll make some steps towards you you make an effort he will help you he will empower you can I get an amen right there from anybody go to I want y'all to look at Acts chapter 11 verse eight Acts chapter 11 verse eight let me read it to you just jot it down when they heard these things they became silent and they glorified God saying then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life God gave his Jewish people to talking and they say God gave the Gentiles the power to repent to have life repentance leads to life it's a part of the thing that gives you life let's look at 2nd Timothy chapter 2 I've read this this is one of those life-changing verses for me but I want to read it to y'all real quick 2nd Timothy chapter 2 verse 24 25 and 26 and a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all able to teach patient in humility correcting those who are in opposition verse 25 if God perhaps will grant them repentance so that they may know the truth and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare the devil haven't been taken captive by him to do his will I love that verse right there oh my gosh I the servant of the Lord don't fight don't argue with people correct them in humility because we believe God will grant them repentance so that they can know the truth and come to their senses somebody on your own need to come to their senses look up and down and see who done lost their mind or your role right here I get amazed at things people do and say and don't realize that the devil's using them yeah let me I saw anybody here ever did and said some and you know it wasn't right and you recognize maybe later that the devil was using you my wife and I was having intense fellowship one time the pastor Bert she said I ain't saying that ain't no new endo neither the devil using both of us [Applause] I said I don't know what you talk about the devil using both of us speak for yourself but the devil will sneak in and if here's what he does he makes a suggestion to you he appeals to your flesh one of our managers on the staff here had to deal with an employee an employee just walk left walked off the job just went home or left the building didn't tell nobody the middle of the day just gone and then when the person got challenged on it they became belligerent about it you mean you don't didn't your parents teach you that you don't have a home training if you you don't just walk off your job and just I'm going home [Applause] are you crazy have you lost your mind y'all hear what I'm saying do you understand what and if this is what stresses me out I'm glad it wasn't me cuz I were to tell you keep on going don't come back if you don't understand that basic concept okay here's number four I'm sorry it's requirement repentance is a requirement for salvation and at some point I don't know how get this tonight I'm a try but often the scripture puts faith and repentance together mark 1:15 says that Jesus is talking he says the time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand repent and believe in the gospel repentance and believe go together I think we missed the mark that we tell people all you have to do is believe we definitely be just believe and just keep living the way you live in no repentance must be a part of the deal I want to tell every altar counselor when you take a person in the back ask them are they willing to repent from the way they've been live in their life faith without works is dead [Applause] so repentance has to be a part of that I got with me hey hey okay let me let me just go through this real quick five specific and I'm not gonna make it through here tonight and then we try five distinct ways that we expressed repentance number one is confession of sin and notice is specific confession of sin not you know general like if I did anything I think it becomes critical that you that that you recognize it's not if you did anything you know exactly what you did and we want to be the live a life that when we go to God we don't be being lollygagging around with him we need to be his specific and say to him you know I realized what I I said I did wrong and here's what I did I acknowledge my sin in psalm 32 verse five it says I acknowledged my sin to you and my iniquity I have not hidden I said I will confess my transgressions to the Lord and you forgave the iniquity of my sin it's confession somebody say confession acknowledgment my sin first John 1:9 if we are faithful he is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all of our unrighteousness God will do that first John 1:9 confession is a part of it if we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from our unrighteousness acknowledgement of what you've done and then on this part we don't try to blame other people no blame-shifting when when God came to Adam in the Garden of Eden he had sinned he said the woman you gave to be with me she gave me of the tree and I ate he tried to pawn her off on his wife Lord I wish I could pawn some stuff off on my wife you don't blame you don't shift the blame you don't try to put it on your fire you didn't know your father you don't say no no you take all this you take on this you take responsibility for your own choices [Applause] repentance you take ownership for your own choices and you don't try to put it on somebody else Adam tried to put it on his wife God gave the command Adam and when she reached up and took from the tree and took a bite he should have say a woman what that wouldn't you do it [Applause] almost slipped up right there [Applause] you don't blame hee-hee-hee when she was sitting there talking to the devil he was right there with him he was standing right there with her and when he saw her reaching up he should have tried to talk reason to it and I dunno talking reason can let me do that let me roll on to the next thing I'm bout to get myself in some trouble then we leave that alone okay here's another second expression is forsaken sin and that forsaken sin means that you have a genuine hatred for it you have a genuine hatred for sin and like I've been saying all night y'all like sin you know the devil the devil knows what you like I'm not tempted by drinking or smoking never was I went into the car washed yesterday I think I told you all this before and sitting over there against the wall was of rack of single packaged Twinkies it one two it was one one [Applause] that devil was talking to me that's my that's my shortcoming I ain't never seen no zingers in a single package the devil knows what you like you not continue with stuff you don't like and you got it we have to learn to develop a hatred for sin and the consequences of our sin and how it impacts us that's what this means how we express it by this by that and we not only confess it but we forsake it somebody say we confess and forsake walk away leave it alone confess and forsake sin No proverbs 28 is a profound verse verse 13 I want to read this to you and I think it's verse that everybody should highlight in their Bible proverbs 28:13 this is he who covers his sin will not prosper but whoever confesses and forsakes will have mercy whoo that's so powerful right there confess and forsake God will give you mercy man that's profound for me to make that we serve a God that if we make we made the right choice he will have mercy upon us we need the mercy of God somebody say I need mercy go to the Scott Isaiah 55 verse 7 just write it down let me turn to a number read it to you let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts let him return to the Lord let me read that again let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts let him return to the Lord and He will have mercy on him and to our God for he will abundantly pardon [Applause] forsake your way and your thought life return to God proverbs 1:29 tells us it's a choice you make the choice choose you choose Bible says in proverbs 1:29 we did not choose to fear the Lord people God brings judgment on those who don't choose to they choose not to obey the Lord okay I'm trying to do better on my time and I got a whole sea let me just finish this section right here here's number three repentance means cleaning up relationships you hurt and bruise people get it straight if you stole from people go pay them back that felt something right there many I need to go to your bosses it happens stealing time from y'all yep be reconciled before you worship God Matthew chapter 5 verse 23 and 24 jot it down if you come to bring your gift to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you leave your gift there before the altar and go your way first be reconciled to your brother and then come and offer your gift cleaning up relationship also means being willing to forgive others I think it's amazing that people want to be forgiven but they don't forgive other people that they've heard we got to be willing to figure to get forgiveness and extend forgiveness we've got to be able to don't hold grudges against people to the degree that you want God to forgive you you have to forgive other people so be willing to forgive make that make that step y'all got that guess number 4 water baptism that's a public announcement that you're renouncing the way you lived your life water baptism it is your public confession that you're now under new ownership and finally we want Jesus to be in charge of your life we want him to be Lord I'm gonna stop right here and take questions comments from anybody who may have it I'm trying to do better on my time I'm trying to stick to the time I want us to be walking out here at 8:30 every night try to stick to that so I've got a little bit more to go but I'll finish it that's we can pick up [Music] Kohei at law but even a pastor I have a question in regards to earlier you talked about people that that come up to you for counseling and stuff so all the times office times I get questions for people that are asking about counseling and so I want to know like what's the best approach especially if I'm not sure if that person is like involved in ministry so let's say if someone is involved in ministry should I tell them to talk to like um talk to talk to their ministry director or leader or something so our church has 120 ministers and those 120 ministries is to help people become and do everything I want them to become okay so the first thing I try to point people in the direction of the ministry that can help them with whatever their need is okay we got Turning Point we got whatever whatever issue you have we have a ministry for it right so we try to point people to get engaged in that ministry or it may be it may be a class they need to take take that class or a discipleship program do that first we have ten eleven thousand people to come to this church we don't have four counselors they can't see everybody no they can't so I'm trying to point people to those others avenues first we have a ministry for it get plugged into the ministry okay thank you thank you yes ma'am Thanks I had a question that I guess not more about repentance I'm awaiting like a good two and a half months since Bible study like kind of ended so I've had questions about what what voice should I listen to so I've been a door has been open for me to go a different direction with my purpose but I've been hesitant because of my decisions last year and I've kind of spent it went I went to a whole whirlwind so I have family members close friends Tommy well don't do it because you're not ready and I don't know if that's God's on me just slow down don't worry how are you 24 okay so I want to encourage you to go to the book store we have a series on hearing the voice of God tell you how to determine when God is talking to you when God is not talking to you mmm get that series and listen to it it's gonna help hearing the voice of God okay if you don't have the money go Charles is gonna give you the money to buy [Applause] often in discussions about repentance or communion you talk about how you need to mend relationships with other people but what if you forgive the person and you understand that that's just where they are and the relationship is toxic for you so you can't really mend it in a way that would be completely amicable for both people how does God deal with that it's like he knows your heart kind of thing so I'm glad you asking this question because I think sometimes people think that mending means you have to give back in a relationship with a person it does not mean that what it means is that your heart is open forgiving you've expressed that but if it's a toxic situation if the paper if the person has troubling behavior we're not encouraging you to stay engage with anybody with troubling or toxic [Applause] tell that joke ally you along alright Amen let's thank the Lord for our study tonight [Applause] [Music] you [Music]
