[Music] Oh [Music] hey guys thanks for watching we're gonna start out this video with a little bit of beginners metal detecting advice now a lot of you've been commenting here recently in the videos and saying hey I'm will be getting into the Hobby pretty soon and that's cool I hope you enjoy it it's a great hobby and it wasn't that long ago right where you're at doing exactly what you're doing watching a lot of YouTube videos trying to learn we're going on a hunt today with a new detectorists his name's doc and he's got a really good machine he got a CTX 3030 which just intimidated me to pieces because that seems like a complicated machine I know it's a good one it just seems complicated for my little brain but what I did was contacted Wayne from over at metal detecting in WGA and asked him for some pointers and he emailed some programs I read that email it make any sense to me Doc's a smart guy and he's already got some good things figured out about his machine but here's what I learned while I was on this hunt no matter what machine you're swinging and no matter how it displays information you're gonna end up relying on your ears to determine a good target now watch a lot of YouTube videos of detectorists and and you're gonna pick up on something especially guys that have been doing it for a while there's some terminology running around you're gonna hear words like squeak or chirp or a grunt like an iron grunt these are words that are used by guys have been detecting for a while and it should tip you off that what they're using mainly to identify their target is their ears it's what they're hearing it's not necessarily the vdi or the number display on their machines and that's important now here's how they learned to do that they dug a lot of holes that's the only way that you're ever going to learn the language of your machine I'm not gonna recommend one machine over the other I think metal detectors all do the same thing some do it a little better than others for sure some have better capabilities in certain areas but you know what for the most part they're all gonna say there's something right there in the ground it's just up to you to try to identify it and the longer you do it the better you get at it so here's an example we dug some coins in this hunt and what we were doing I would go over it with the 80 Pro and I would say all right I would definitely dig that signal I suspect that to be a coin doc would bring his machine over and he would swing over it and listen and something happened something clicked in my brain even though I did not know anything about the CTX it did the exact same thing that the 80 Pro did it gave a short sweet tone a high tone clearly identifiable to me as a coin signal even though I've never been around the CTX before that's just something that takes time a lot of trash rings up really good and you're gonna get fooled everybody gets full you're gonna swing over a target and go oh my goodness that sounds beautiful and you're gonna dig up and it's gonna be a piece of aluminum flashing just part of the Hobby smile and go on every time I dig something like that you know what I tell myself that could have been a coin this place isn't hunted out somebody missed that target it's a good thing to actually define some junk that sounds nice because the next good sounding target might be something good so get out there dig a lot of holes dig it all that's good advice that's how you learn and good luck hope you enjoy the Hobby it's a good one all right guys how do you like that view couldn't ask for a prettier place to hunt today and today I'm hunting with Doc and he has got CTX 3030 and we are trying to learn this machine but he's got access to this property here and we think there's an old house site on it so what the plan is is I'm gonna take the 80 Pro and I'm gonna go over targets that I would dig and he's gonna run the CTX over it and do a little bit of learning that way so we've got on anything interesting we'll be sure to show you all right so we're getting lots of signals a lot of it's kind of big trash stuff but we did just manage to dig an old luster cream lid there is some old stuff here we just got to get through the trash and find the place that has it we'll keep going all right well we just got a first coin don't know what it is yet just saw the edge of it it is nice and green though look at the color of that coin that is a good color rang up low like an Indian head but it's not it's a we do so let's see if we can get a date off of it and clean it up a little bit better good fine all right well we may be on the first silver this was a very weird signal it was right on the surface but this rock was here so may have a silver quarter I'm pretty sure it is let's do a wipe well none of your coin guys freaked out it's just too Washington it is 1942 silver quarter how cool is that let's see if we got a mint mark denver mint mark - very cool first silver on the property we're getting it was owned in here a little bit maybe we'll pull some more all right well got a quarter signal over here and so Doc's learning the numbers on his machine and we've already dug a silver quarter so you've got the numbers off that and we're gonna check this one out where's your spot think you went past it [Music] [Music] I think what's the depth read - okay let's see if we can just give it with a pin pointer that's why well I think it's modern of course it was shallow too but I'm getting like an eight or seven get mistake Porter Louisiana all right we'll take it anyway this is just ridiculous get out of the road your bum you all right I'm here at the tannery doing a little hunting and I was walk along and I was thinking about advice that I wish I'd been given when I first started detecting so here's two things that I've noticed I've done them and I've noticed that people that really have never detected before they tend to do this kind of naturally with without thinking but it's two things you shouldn't do all right so here's the first thing when you first get that detector and you start swinging it for the first little bit you're gonna be kind of overwhelmed with the amount of noise that you're hearing more likely if you're in a real tragic spot like this okay so here's my feet the tendency is to want to swing about like this a two or three foot wide swing and if you ever start detecting when somebody knows what they're doing you're gonna of course get out hunted but part of the reason may not be because the detectors not what theirs is part of it is is that they're probably covering twice the ground that you're covering in the same amount of time by broadening that swing take advantage of every bit of the swing that you possibly can get cover more exams find more stuff all right here's the second thing we'll take this leaf right here let's say that leaf is our target and you're swinging along and all of a sudden you hear something there's a tendency to want to do this to put that detector right over where you heard it and do something like this like a hover and you really you don't hear anything that way you have to feed the detector information and the way that you do that is by swinging so don't be afraid when you hear that target to swing nice and rapidly and your weight you're waiting for that sound to repeat don't hover okay two tips alright guys I just got a signal it was so crummy that I didn't think it was a coin and this thing was just I felt crumbly so I was kind of in disbelief that it was a coin but it rang up in the low 70s I'm hoping that's an Indian head will clean it off something about it feels weird I don't know we'll see alright well it is an Indian head but it is so crusty I don't know that I'll get a date off of it but I'll give it my best shot after that it's a dented I don't know if that maybe was what was going on with the signal it's a little bit dented I'll take it though love find an Indian head alright guys doing a little grilling here and I got makini out while I'm waiting take a look at it I'm gonna hit this with a brass brush that tip came from okey surf-and-turf metal detecting and it's worked really well for me on Indians I can't say I'm gonna pull it out but I think it's the best chance I got it'll be prettier when we're done I'll show you what it looks like well I don't know about prettier but I did get a date all I see right there at the very end is Oh - it looks like can't swear to the - but I definitely see that uh 1900s that's cool haven't done the back yet [Music]
