Before You Buy The Retroid Pocket 4 Pro For $199...

welcome have you been looking for something that's a retro emulator in addition to a bunch of other things like an Android gaming device a game streaming handheld and even something with Posh controls well this is the retroid pocket 4 and it's gotten much more [Music] interesting today we are doing a before you buy on the retroid pocket 4 lineup now before we get into that fantastic ftic Hardware we are giving away an AM bernick RG 35xx it's still a great emulator and if you'd like to Win It subscribe down below and we'll be picked in the next video this is a before you buy where we take a look at the physical overview of the product the software things I like and don't like the cost and the competition let's get unboxed this is the Retro pocket 4 Pro there are a few different models we have in the studio the 4 Pro for testing so if you're familiar with the retroid pocket lineup so far they've been smaller PSP sized handhelds that are Android gaming devices and on this one we actually got an update to a bunch of the hardware the sticks have been turned into holif effect sticks which use magnets and the triggers are analog so that means when you pull down the trigger it's going to register from 0 to one and that is fantastic for racing games and stuff like that so you can just hair pull those triggers to make sure you know you drift ever so perfectly and we know how this works the abxy buttons are squishy not clicky the sticks are nice and smooth and a little bit tall and they each have a click which are clicky the start and select buttons which are squishy not clicky along with the d-pad that is also squishy and not clicky the back triggers are analog and Squishy on the back but clicky on the tops while the power and volume up and down Rockers are clicky not squishy we have a micro HDMI on the top USBC for charging on the bottom SD card slot speaker holes and a 3.5 mm headphone jack and on the back we have the new retroid pocket logo in addition to a vent hole for the fan if you got the Pro Edition and the vent hole coming at the top and nothing on the sides that's all for the physical overview but we also have a few different color options on this one I actually have the transparent white one but there's a bunch of different colors on Retro's website if you'd like to look for them there Link in the description now let's move on to the software part of this review because this thing can emulate quite a bit and I'd like to start with the 8 and 16bit eras that's everything from your uh Magnavox Odyssey and pong all the way up to your turbo graphic 16 and Super Nintendo systems that's also including handhelds like the Game Boy and Game Boy advanced all of those consoles play great on here if they have emulators within Android moving on to the next generation of consoles which is like the Sony PlayStation and N64 era anything on from the PlayStation and Below runs great in addition to the N64 all of this runs very well on the retroid pocket 4 Pro moving up to the Next Generation which is as the PlayStation 2 Gamecube and Xbox eras the PlayStation 2 Dreamcast and Nintendo GameCube all run really well on this there may be some hiccups and stuttering some in some specific cases but most of these consoles most of the libraries run very well and if you're looking for Xbox emulation I would stick to Game Pass streaming for this because there aren't really a ton of great emulators on Android and most of those games are available elsewhere moving past that we don't really have a whole ton for emulation in PlayStation 3 era of things but you'll be able to get some things like the 3DS to run in addition to that I was able to get switch emulation running on here but it wasn't quite running at full speed so even though it is running it's not running at full speed yet we need just a hair more of a bump to get this to run basic titles nothing like your Zelda breath of the wild or anything it would be more or less the easier to emulate titles on the switch system the PSP runs great here and also I was able to get some of the Vita settings to run as well Vita does not really run on here but I was able to get everything installed and once this has a little more back end under it well we might even be able to get a lot more Vita titles to run on here looks like the software is running but it kind of crashes when it tries to compile everything anything past that I would look to streaming services which turn out really well or Android games on this device Android gaming on here is Fant fantastic because if your controls aren't ported correctly to the device you actually have that screen mapping overlay so you can use like something like Pokemon unite those controls never get mapped correctly so you can do that here some other handhelds like the Nintendo DS run very well on this console and if you can see the you can scale it in a way that it looks very close to what the actual device looks like in addition to comparing games on the Nintendo switch to the retroid pocket 4 Pro here this comparison is pretty cool cool too because these two systems are very close to the same size and are both running well Android either way there's a ton of different things you can play on this device and the software is immense so this brings us to what I like about the device the device itself is very well built the controls feel fantastic the sticks are nice and High versus the last iteration they were much too small and sunk into the device for me these having the little bit taller joysticks and sacrificing a little bit of that size is totally worth it for me cuz your hands don't cramp up nearly as quickly versus those smaller sunken in joyon style joysticks but what about the key mapping software that really makes a difference for games that have onscreen keyboard inputs but you don't want to see those anymore it's nice that you can actually map stuff to this I've haven't done reviews on some other devices because they don't have that function that is a big portion to why the retroid pocket 4 is great it's also great to see that the power of this this device is actually getting a little bit higher too so we were able to get some light switch emulation done in addition to some tried to get some PSV emulation done every time I launched mine I had issues and it just crashed each time so it's trying on that maybe a few more updates and you'll be able to run maybe some light titles but this does bring me to one portion that I don't like which is the stupid audio the audio is loud and it's Audible and it's not hard to hear and it's clear problem is they still haven't ported the freaking speakers to the front it's very easy to do they have plenty of space to do this the speakers still fire out of the back so your pinkies block the holes so if you're playing it and you notice that your sound sounds weird move your fingers because they will be blocking the sound there are a lot of good things going for it and that's kind of a small gripe but that's the one gripe that I always end up with because that's just I don't know why they don't do it the right way put them to the front you're facing this way not this way it sounds louder from the back other than that Minor Detail it's still a great device and it comes in into the next category which is the cost the cost of this device is $200 so in that price category what are we looking at well you're looking at a bunch of different retro handhelds but you're also looking at a well you're looking at the Logitech Cloud you're looking at stuff that is a streaming device like the io pocket air but that's $100 more and has an OLED screen and is a lot bigger this is an emulator first with streaming in the background it does it very well but it's not its main focus its main focus is playing retro games and having that front end to load all of your games and play it is really nice though having all of those Android games and streaming services right at right there as well so you want to keep that in mind where you could also get something like the Logitech cloud or the PlayStation portal but you have to have that ecosystem for the portal and same thing with the Logitech Cloud to kind of work this also plays your entire backlog of the different systems we've already men mentioned but overall I think this is a fantastic device if you either get the 4 or 4 Pro I have the 4 Pro here and I think it's a very robust piece of technology that gets a lot done so if you're looking for something like that or maybe you're looking at some of the competition well we've got you covered we've got all different options of handhelds and Technology right here and right here take
