hi my name is Vicky and today I'm going to be carrying out an inspection of my lands hi my colony is here in my garden the colony arrived as a swarm on the 30th of May 2020 it was a fantastic experience the colony arrived of its own accord we'd already had the Lions hive in the garden and Scout bees were showing some considerable interest in it so I made sure it was in the right position and hoped hoped and hoped that a swarm would arrive and on the 30th of May it finally did it was an incredible experience I was in my lounge and I looked out of the window and there was a kind of golden cloud at the bottom end of my garden so far they seem to have been doing really well they are taking up the space inside the Lions hive plenty of comb building we've seen the Queen there's brood you see worker brood there and so today really I'm keen to see how they're getting on and how much space they're utilizing within the Lions hive behind it natural beekeeping I was inspired to use this kind of a hide some of my subscribers have asked that question why did you choose the lay inside well I actually attended of course in Monmouth put on by the bees for development charity and over two days dr. leo sure Ashkan explained the whole ethos behind using the Lions life and I was quite struck with how it would work for me both in terms of being natural being treatment free and also being quite easy to use as a beginner beekeeper so the principle is it is a horizontal hide right one of which there's less opportunity for robbing but this isn't like a national hype there's no stacking of frames over the top this is the full the full hide here so in just a minute I'm going to be taking this lid off and we're going to see what's going on inside the hides but before I do that I am actually going to get some bead Katan see you in a minute as some of you have commented yes I do have chickens in my garden they're also very much enjoying all the all the undergrowth at the moment and they seem to be quite a good symbiotic friend of the bees so it's it's not a problem some people have asked me that how do you make sure that your your chickens and your bees get along well they just seem to know how to get along so all's well there so first of all I'll take off the lid and one of the things that's different about the lay inside is that your bees and automatically exposed but with your hands you can actually feel where the brood is so as I put my hand across the top here there is warm flat this end this is definitely the brood chamber and I would say it's extending here obviously the entrance is near this brood chamber as well so everything is where you'd expect it to be but what I'm going to do today is I'm going to look I'm going to take out a couple of brains perhaps and lift a couple but I'm not going to be lifting them all I don't want to cause them that disturbance it's not necessary but I would like to see how they're using the volume of the of the hive space so these frames are empty as I'd expect they have [Music] and again there's more and more topless so here on about the seventh frame here in a half weeks ago this wasn't yes this is all beautiful trash comb belt it's absolutely glorious that is wonderful this fifth frame is an absolute weight it is really really heavy so it's got a whole load of uncapped honey here at the top but at the bottom can you see that you've got like a little hanging little clusters of these that's the position that they're in when they are making work plans expending a huge amount of energy to create this wax from their abdominal glands so there will be amazing in this in this frame sorry and I came out they've done an amazing job and so you can see the capped honey on that side is amazing and here too we have another very heavy brain that's also full of brood there in the middle you can actually see bees coming in and out at the top you've got capped honey and uncapped honey this is a very encouraging sight and this is wonderful yeah well done bees as you've noticed I don't tend to use the smoker but I'm just cleaning to make sure that as I put this all back together but any be sort of squashed on me I'm putting this back so tightly so I just give it a tiny little bit to make sure they're well clear anyway so I'm now going to put all of this back tightly I'm really pleased that as I've done this today there seems to have barely been any disturbance of the bees and they don't seem to have been at all upset by me I'm not sure whether that's to do with the type of bees that they are I don't know I didn't buy them of course it was they turned up of their own accord and perhaps the fact that they actually chose this hive in its position I didn't catch them in a bait hive they actually just turned up and also this hive is supposed the lands male bees to replicate what they would have in the wild the volume of the land's life is meant to replicate the the ideal the volume that bees would use in a tree which would be their natural environment so this is all very much a learning process for me thank you for your notes [Music] it's been a real help to to learn some some new things from you all and I'm going to be doing some more hive inspections this year and if you're interested in my videos then I'd be very grateful if you subscribe so thank you very much so my plan will be to do a further five inspection in the next three or so weeks and hopefully continue to see this colony prosper thanks for viewing
