what's up everybody i'm back with another reaction video you know i wasn't sure i was going to do another one after that first one but again too many people have been like dude you're a bass singer people know you you should be reacting to bass singer stuff so here i am reacting to jeff castaloogies far over the misty mountains cold low basinger cover i'm but a normal base he's a low base as we'll see um a few things i now have merchandise this is my official logo so here's the hat you can buy sweatshirts coffee mugs you buy sweat pants you can buy tank tops you can buy a lot of cool stuff so go check it out the people who have bought stuff so far absolutely love uh what they've got five star reviews all across the board and uh let's see other housekeeping um it might seem weird that i'm reacting to to jeff like it's my first time hearing i will say that although i've seen a lot of his stuff i have not seen all of his stuff i have not seen all the voice play stuff and most of the stuff i've seen i've only seen once so as much as i love jeff i do not spend hours and hours binging his content and his compilations so some of this will come as uh rather surprising to me and if it's not i'm going to give my analysis as a base singer because i know that's what you guys want so i mean i have without further ado let's uh let's jump in and do this thing i'm excited i did watch the premiere i did watch the premiere but you know uh i can't remember all the details only watched it once so let's do this thing all right jeff impress me here we go so i'll go ahead and stop here already what i like that jeff's been doing is he has in his own brand and his own image he has kind of separated a little bit from from pure acapella so he has the pure a cappella stuff with voice play but when he's doing his own thing he has really nice instrumentation which i assume he arranges as well i assume he has he has some knowledge of orchestral arrangement another instrumental arrangement um and i love that so you know he's he's doing the the pure acapella with voice play and then he's doing you know his own version his own genre where he's doing these low bass acapella acapella-like covers but he's adding instrumentation i think that's really fascinating and it works quite nicely especially you know a nice string section in a piece like this it's the chef's kiss [Music] what does he say what's what's he saying this thing all right we got a sub-harmonic let's see what oh g okay cool so we took he's got this down a half step nice [Laughter] mountains cold you know i like that intro a lot i like that intro a lot it's pretty standard as far as the texture and the harmonies are concerned he added a little bit he added some lower stuff in there but it all blends really nicely um something jeff does when he sings you'll see in this first line go back it's minimal effort i mean even to the point where his mouth is barely moving uh this is something you often want to strive for as a singer to maximize efficiency you don't want to get too caught up in a in a bunch of mouth movement when really the the sound is coming from diaphragm through vocal folds and that's it and then the shape of your vocal tract informs the kinds of sounds you make and what jeff does a great job of is not overdoing it at the lip mouth area he really or the oral cavity as it's called he really just uses the voice and puts enough texture and diction in it so we know what he's saying but it doesn't get chopped up let's listen to that again [Laughter] far over the misty mountains to dungeons deep and kevin's old we must aware to find our long forgotten [Music] naturally naturally you got to put the g1 subramanik in there and this time is the solo line not just as the fabric of the piece yeah this is really good i like a lot of jeff's stuff i like a lot of what he does something i'm not the biggest fan of truth be told is when he over darkens a little bit in his lower range uh on the on the phoneme two here um it sounds like he pulls the tongue back a little bit to over darken um i know he's a huge fan of phil ravenscroft who has naturally one of the darkest warmest roundest voices out there and i think i mean if i had to guess i'm guessing he when he gets in his low range either because he's listened so much or because he admires the sound so much he mimics it a little bit and range-wise jeff i think is even lower than thorough which is crazy but as far as timbre wise you know thorough's got a darker timbre so i think jeff brings a little too much into that occasionally in his low range but he's phenomenal i mean the guy's phenomenal he's the best let's keep going [Laughter] [Music] the wind was moaning oh wow i that that you know i have not heard this before in a cover of this piece and that bit of drive that adds so much i mean that then you feel like like we're marching like we're like we're going through the mountains now you know i mean you feel like you're in the you're in the dwarf crew in lord of the rings or the hobbit just just just trudging through there you know what i mean oh i love that great touch jeff the fire was the trees like torches i love this arrangement this is so much more creative than what i've heard people do on this piece he has these moments where certain parts will cut out while others continue and hold the suspension is what's that's what that's called when you hold it when you hold a note that's not in the triad of the cord it's called a suspension and he's got a lot of those here will hold one and then he'll resolve it i love that that may that adds so much suspense to the music i mean it has that name for a reason and um i also loved how he comes in with the he comes in with the the like high i don't know i don't know if he's up in falsetto we can fact check that but up in his up in his higher range he comes in with a lighter breathy harmony comes in there um and we're only in verse two i mean we got a ways to go in this piece i have a feeling and from what i remember from the premiere that it really does build verse to verse to verse and then comes back calm on the last one and that is pretty standard practice but this arrangement is sensational let's go back a little bit [Music] [Music] also these outfits the man's got a budget now i mean he's built up a following and it makes a lot of money on patreon he's got a budget and he uses it really well this is a beautiful production [Music] that's what i'm talking about [Music] in the octave up that's what he's doing the one ah ah you know what i mean it's like he hits the chord and then these high harmonies come in and they fill it out beautiful jeff decided every time someone does something crazy in one of these reactions i'm wearing the pit vipers for at least 30 seconds hold up that was a thick thick thick with three c's g1 and chest that is insane god hold up hold up jeff are you good did you have four liters of rum the night before you recorded this that is absurd all right thank you pit vipers i'm sure you'll come back at some point good god one more time that's that sounds so good dark things [Music] um i mean really he's a great singer he's got crazy range but seriously his best asset might be his arrangements they're beautiful i mean those are like uh like tommy p is another one of in my opinion one of the best arrangers of a cappella music i've ever heard in my life and there's there's a lot of similarities between these two in terms of uh creativity and and taking the original content and putting their own amazing spin on it and those two do it like like no one else in my opinion i mean it's incredible i mean if you just have this down section that doesn't exist i don't think uh and it's just a beautiful arrangement and now i can tell he's now he's going to this last verse and so far there's no there's not even a bass solo he says oh oh the famous bass song how about we just remove the bass solo and part of it that's creative that's thinking outside the box [Music] see the the on the word the to me it's a little too over dark and there's a little too much tongue in the pharynx action see what i mean it's very subtle it's very subtle he has a lot of these first beat hits and then the chords come in first beat hits and the chords come in super creative i love that i have not heard that take on this piece [Music] he's making us wait you know he's going to finish this song on ig i'm going to get my pit fighters ready wait and get my pit vipers ready because we know it's coming we ride before yeah yeah jeff you know uh that was sensational man you earned double pit viper status i have a feeling that's going to be rare in these reactions now that final low g i did not like as much as the one in the middle the one in the middle was cleaner it had more higher partials you know that middle one you put that in a choir setting you would hear it i mean you would hear that you know if you got the whole choir like an ooh something soft um you would hear that the end one a little breathier almost growl-like i don't think it was growl i think it was chest but um that's just my opinion middle actually let's go let's go let's to the middle part of the fourth time where was that we're gonna find it that's so good torches next one next the next one that is insane now listen listen i'ma play one more time a fifth time and then i'm gonna jump to the final g and you i think you'll get the difference i'm talking about we ride before the break of the day [Music] maybe it is a growl i mean they're very different timbres i mean it sounds it sounds different enough to be intentional you know what i mean it doesn't sound like he flubbed one it really this one sounds different so all you experts out there i know a bunch of you guys who love identifying technique in the contra register let me know you think it's a growl do you think it's chest is it a breathy chest you know is it like a it almost sounds growl or like imagine if avi with his like very breathy warm tone like forced it a little bit you know what i mean imagine if avi forced a g1 instead of just like did his thing [Music] i don't know guys i'm not in the business of iding i'm in the business of singing um that was wonderful i mean so many wonderful things i hope i highlighted enough of them double pit viper status for jeff and a beautiful arrangement i mean he's the best in the business we love him for it and uh yeah that was absolutely sensational i think i enjoyed it more the second time actually you know because for the reaction i'm really paying close attention everything uh awesome i'll see you guys next time and thanks for joining peace you
