[Applause] 1d8 [Applause] I'm not proficient in this weapon what attack rolls and damage rolls what the hell is this [Music] welcome back and I hope everyone is doing fine amidst what's presently going on in the world in today's video we're gonna talk about weapons in Baldur's Gate three weapon proficiency weapon properties weapon damage and a lot more so you don't want to stick around for the entire video now keep in mind we haven't seen everything pertaining to weapons in baldur's gate 3 specifically so we will be going off the gameplay that we have seen as well as the 5e D&D player handbook as time goes on I'll be sure to update all of these videos but I think it's fairly safe to assume that most if not all of the information in this video will be correct without further ado let's talk weapons weapon proficiency your race and class choices in Baldur's Gate 3 as well as feats will grant you proficiency in certain weapons having proficiency in a weapon means that you will be given a bonus when using that specific weapon or weapon type this bonus will be a number that you will add to your attack roles in combat further increasing your chance of actually hitting your target so when you enter combat and it is your turn when you attack your opponent the first thing that will be done via behind-the-scenes instant computer calculation is your attack role your attack role will determine if you hit or miss your strike if you are successful with your attack role which means you hit your target then the game will do another behind-the-scenes instant calculation to determine the damage that you will deal which is called your damage role if you have proficiency with the weapon you are using when your attack role is calculated you will be able to add your proficiency bonus to that attack role further increasing your chance of successfully hitting your target so how does the attack role work I won't get too much into details for I want to focus on weapons in this video but an attack role in Baldur's Gate 3 will be a role of a 20-sided dice the results of that role after modifiers and proficiency bonuses are added will then be put up against your opponent's armor class number if you tie or exceed their armor class number you will successfully hit your target and a damage role will then be conducted if you roll less than their armor class you flat out miss and have to wait for your next turn this is why weapon proficiency is important to pay attention to for using a weapon that you are proficient in will add to your overall success in the game it's kind of like saying if every time you buy a lottery ticket if you come into the store wearing a black hat they give you two instead of one you can still foul but your chance of success is higher so you'll want to wear that black hat instead of a red hat not the best example ever but it's always good to increase your chances of success the two weapon categories for weapon proficiency are simple and marshal most characters will have the proficiency in simple weapons simple weapons include clubs maces daggers the types of weapons often found in the hands of commoners martial weapons include weapons such as swords axes pole arms weapons that typically require more specialized training to wield effectively you will see that some classes offer weapon proficiency specifically labeled as simple and martial meaning all of the weapons that fall into those categories you will be proficient in in other classes will tell you specifically which weapons you will gain proficiency in for example selecting the rogue class will give you proficiency in simple weapons and also hand crossbows long swords rapiers and short swords so you will gain proficiency in all of the simple weapons but only certain types of martial weapons the ones that we just mentioned the main lesson from this is when choosing a race in class look into which weapon proficiencies they will offer and make sure that your preferred weapon type is included once you know that you are proficient in a certain type of weapon and you start to use that weapon you really don't have to think too much more about it you're taking advantage of what the game is offering you so right here we have a rapier and underneath the type of weapon you may notice that it says melee in Baldur's Gate 3 there will be two types of weapons melee and ranged melee weapons are typically used to attack targets within 5 feet of you while ranged weapons are used to attack a target at a distance as you can see here the rapier is labeled as melee and this bow is labeled as ranged weapons will also have different properties associated with them such as being a two-handed weapon or a thrown weapon but we'll talk about weapon properties after we talk about the fun stuff weapon damage to someone not familiar with D&D seeing this 1d8 piercing in the rapier swap in description might make you say what the hell is this this is how much damage your weapon can potentially do 1d8 means that you will roll one eight sided dice well technically in Baldur's Gate three you won't actually roll the dice the computer will do that instant calculation essentially doing the roll for you so for one d8 the computer will roll an eight sided dice one time which means your dice roll will get a minimum of one and a maximum of eight and of course don't forget to add in your ability modifier and that is your damaged roll so if you are successful with the attack roll meaning that you hit your target then the damaged roll will be calculated now there are ways in situations where your damage may be mitigated etc but we're just talking about the basics in this video now if we change weapons here and look at this dagger it says one d4 so the computer will be rolling one four-sided dice for you to determine your damage with this specific weapon if you're using a larger more powerful weapon like this great sword it might say something like to d6 that means that you're rolling two six-sided dice and then adding them together and then adding your modifiers on top of that it might sound confusing and seem like it's too much to think about when in combat in a video game but really guys a lot of the thinking goes on before the battle starts and you're just making sure that you are prepared and offering your character the best chance of success with these instant behind-the-scenes dice rolls when you're actually in combat you're not doing every calculation in your head while some people might be believe it or not many other games use systems like this where when you're in combat and you hit your enemy a randomly generated number will determine if you are lucky and get a critical hit or if you miss or do low damage etc baldur's gate three is just specifically following the rule set from the 5e players handbook from Dungeons and Dragons and imitating the dice rolls now let's talk about your weapons damage type back to the rapier here you will notice that next to the one d8 you see the word piercing and Baldur's Gate three different attacks damaging spells and other harmful effects will deal different types of damage some examples of different damage types are acid bludgeoning cold fire forest lightning necrotic piercing poison psychic radiance slashing and thunder I won't spend too much time on them specifically I'll save that for a later video but let's use piercing as an example with our rapier he is described as puncturing and impelling attacks including Spears and monster bites so depending on your opponent they might have a resistance to a certain damage type or they may even have a vulnerability if an opponent is resistant to a damage type the damage that you deal will be cut in half if they are vulnerable to the damage type your damage will be doubled resistance and then vulnerability are applied after all modifiers to damage so how do critical hits work well if you roll a 20 on your attack roll it is considered a critical hit and you will then be able to do two damaged rolls only the weapons damaged dice will get doubled not the bonuses applied on top of it so say we're using a weapon which had a 1 d 8 damage and you had a strength modifier of +3 if we roll a 20 on the attack roll granting us a critical hit our rape here essentially turns into a 2 d 8 plus our strength modifier of 3 hopefully that makes sense so during the attack role if we don't roll a 20 we're doing 1 D 8 damage plus our strength modifier of 3 if we get lucky and get a 20 on the attack role we roll to D 8 plus our strength modifier of 3 you can do quite a lot more damage if you get that lucky 20 it's pretty sweet now let's talk about weapon properties many weapons and baldur's gate free will have a special property or properties related to their use let's go through them starting with ammunition if a weapon has the ammunition property it means that you can only make a ranged attack with it if you have ammunition to fire from the weapon each time you attack with that weapon you expend one piece of ammunition if you use a weapon that has the ammunition property to make a melee attack you treat the weapon as an improvised weapon what we'll talk about soon finesse if a weapon has the finesse property when making an attack you will use your choice of your strength or dexterity modifier for the attack and damage rules an example would be when using a scimitar you can use your strength or dexterity for the modifier depending on which ability you have a higher ability score end if you're a dexterity based rogue you might better benefit from using a dexterity modifier if you're a strength based barbarian you might better benefit from using strength as your modifier Hevy if a weapon is labeled as heavy small creatures will have disadvantage on attack roles so make sure that your race isn't too small if you plan on using heavy weapons an example might be if gnome is a playable race it might not be beneficial to use a halberd light a light weapon is small and easy to handle making it ideal when fighting with two weapons these are great weapons to use when wanting to do a wheeled or while using another object in your offhand loading when using a weapon with the loading property you will only be able to fire one piece of ammunition from it per turn when you use an action bonus action or reaction to fire at this is because of the time required to load em range weapons with the range property will typically have in parentheses two numbers the weapons normal range in feet in the weapons long range when you attack a target beyond the normal range and into the long range you will receive disadvantage on attack roles you cannot attack a target beyond the long range length reach reach weapons will allow you to add 5 feet to your reach when you attack with it most melee weapons allow you to reach up to 5 feet with the reach property you could essentially now reach up to 10 feet an example would be a lance or a pike special weapons with a special property have unusual rules governing their use depending on that specific weapon an example would be a nut which has its own set of special rules in a lance which when attacking a target within 5 feet of you it will give you disadvantage thrown if a weapon has the thrown property you can throw the weapon to make a ranged attack an example would be a spear or a hand axe both can be used as melee weapons but also can be thrown two-handed it's basically self-explanatory these weapons require two hands when you attack with them and last stop is versatile weapons these weapons can be used as either a one-handed or two-handed weapon an example here in the actual game is this quarter staff you will deal different damage depending on how you wield it the last two things we will talk about in today's video are silvered weapons and improvised weapons if they include silver weapons in Baldur's Gate 3 some monsters will have immunity or resistance to non magical weapons so to counter this your non magical weapon can be coated in silver which will most likely cost you some coin you what your lovers will probably not hesitate to have this done and I don't blame you improvised weapons will be used when you don't have a weapon to attack with so you improvise this may be broken glass a table leg frying pan or even a dead goblin oftentimes an improvised weapon is treated like an actual weapon for example a table leg would be akin to a club and if your character has proficiency in simple weapons this will carry over to the table leg an object that bears no resemblance to a weapon will deal 1.d4 damage which is rolling a four-sided dice one time this goes for if you use it as a melee weapon or a ranged weapon I thought I actually heard during the gameplay reveal that we will be able to throw characters which if true will most certainly offer some unique and memorable experiences so that's the basics for how weapons and weapon damage will work in Baldur's Gate 3 there's still a lot to talk about but hopefully this video at least gets you acclimated to what's going on anyone wants to add to any of this feel free to do so below in the comments we are all one community sharing the love and passion for an amazing upcoming game thanks so much for
