Bacon Grease as Engine OIl? Let's try it!

I read every comment and I've had a lot of requests lately to test bacon grease is engine oil now this seems like a very interesting idea to me because after all bacon grease has a lot of fat in fat of course has a lot of lubrication properties so will this actually work as engine oil now I know this seems very unrealistic but in some instances you might actually have 10 pounds of bacon which of course can be converted into bacon grease and use this engine oil so in an extreme emergency such as on a camping trip with a lot of bacon in the middle of nowhere and you've lost all the engine oil could you use bacon grease to get you back out of the woods well I'm not sure if this is gonna work or not but we're about to find out so let's get the testing underway we're gonna compare the lubricity of bacon grease to 10w30 on this lubricity tester we're gonna test bacon grease essential oil in this small engine we're going to compare the flow of bacon grease to engine oil using this tester so anytime we work with an engine oil or any sort of product inside of an engine I always like to see what I'm working with so I couldn't find a safety data sheet for bacon obviously so I did find the ingredients what's the effective gradient that's going to help us with this test it's the fact fortunately there's 6 grams of fat and most importantly there's 2 grams of saturated fats so this should work pretty well I've had this bacon grease cooking on this griddle for about 15 minutes so I'm gonna go ahead and pour some of this into our testing cup that we're going to use on the lubricity tester and see what kind of films drink we have with it [Music] you all I can say is there's very little scoring on this bearing compared to 10w30 very impressive performance I'm gonna put these side-by-side now we'll take a close look at them tend to be 30 conventional oils on the left and bacon grease is on the right it's hard to believe that bacon grease actually has better film strength than 10w30 motor oil by a long ways very impressive I get a lot of questions on how I start lawn mowers using a drill I always like to use a corded drill because this will spin up to about 2500 rpm a cordless drill just doesn't spin quite as fast and sometimes that can be a problem using the drill though I also have a socket adapter the way this works is this sock adapter will obviously fit into the drill then I'll find the appropriate size socket that works with each lawnmower then of course use the drill to spin up the engine fast enough to get it started the only downside of using this approach is if you don't pull the socket away from the engine once it starts quick enough the socket could get stuck on top of the engine and occasionally the socket goes flying the size of nut varies from engine to engine so there isn't a set size I find that they're about three or four different sizes that are pretty common and the way this works is you just place the socket on top get everything in position and go to work getting the engine started we really want to know what's going on inside the crank case regarding engine temperatures so we're going to do is I've got this temperature probe inserted through the dipstick down into the crank case this thermometer only measures and Celsius not Fahrenheit we'll run this engine for about 30 minutes using 10w30 and we'll keep an eye on the crank case temperature as well as a cylinder head temperature and then we'll compare it to bacon grease [Music] you [Music] [Music] so the baking grease is about a hundred and fifty degrees Fahrenheit a little bit warmer than it has to be to flow but it'll easily flow into the crankcase of the engine so if you're out camping and you have to use bacon grease you're not gonna be able to filter out the chunks so we're just gonna pour everything on into the engine and see how it does [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] I'm let the engine cool down a while and then I'm going to take a compression test and then we'll drain out the crankcase to see what the bacon grease looks like [Music] I'm going to drain out the bacon grease now and we'll take a look at it see what it looks like [Music] I used 87 octane gasoline with a 10% ethanol blend even though I used the same type of gasoline that I normally do I used a different type of engine oil obviously I use bacon grease and look how clean this cylinder head is I've never seen a cylinder head this clean and all I can say is I'm really amazed at how clean the combustion chambers stay I just don't see this very often [Music] this is the bacon grease look at how little viscosity there is this stuff really thins out once it's heated I'm going to filter this and see if we see any sort of chunks [Music] I'm not seeing anything metallic on this paper towel so I don't think we caused any damage to the engine the bacon grease in the engine oil or about the same temperature let's see how these flow this stuff is thick it definitely doesn't want to flow at room temperature looking at I'm really surprised at just how well bacon grease worked as engine oil I really thought we would have a little bit more of an issue with carbon buildup inside the combustion chamber but obviously some of that bacon grease was getting past the piston rings and actually working as a cleaner inside the combustion chamber I really did not expect to see the combustion chamber quite so clean after such a long engine run however please do not try this at home because you could have some pretty significant damage to your engine also once this engine cools off there's gonna be a lot of bacon grease that's turned into sort of like a sludge inside the engine so I'm gonna have to do several different flushes in order to get all that bacon grease out we also noticed that the engine was running a little bit warmer than usual an indication that the oil viscosity was a bit of an issue anyway I went to Dennis video had I not had so The combustion chamber was so clean after! I'm actually shocked that it didn't seem to gum up or produce any kind of deposit from breaking down at sustained heat and pressure exposure. Super interesting!
