now today i'm going to go through some of the kit i plan on using and taking on my backpacking trip across scotland there's a few bits and pieces i needed to get and a few things i also wanted to try out now when it comes to the shelter you would have seen my last video which was the tarp tent notch li which is up here just now you can have a look at that later if you want but there was a few issues with it where i felt it could do with some tweaks so i've done some modifications so the first thing we'll do is we'll get the tent set up and i'll show you what i've done to it and also these bits of kit i plan on taking and the reasons why when it comes to the ends of the tent i have really changed that i have basically just dismantled everything that come with it and done my own setup i'm going to try this out it might work it might not so yeah please don't go modifying your tent on this i'm just going to give this a give us a bash but what i have done is i've added extra long guy line on the ends here for pegging out it just makes it easier to find a spot on the ground and there was one of these adjusters or tensioner claps on this bottom corner and what i have done is removed that i cut the back of it with a hot knife and then unfed it from the loop so you have to be very careful when you're doing anything like that on this tent in case you damage it now once you've cut that clip off because you've got the small slot in it that's what you could use on the tab on the main doors so that then you could add an extra adjuster but what i've done here is i've added two dyneema loops just one inch loops and that lets me now use two shepherd stakes and this is what's pegging out the corners one of the quirks of this tent i noticed and it was to do with this door here and well it's on both sides was this extra long tab and i wondered what it was for and originally there was a metal clip you used to shut the doors on the older model and they've just left this tab now what i have done is i've added this guideline adjuster the self-tightening adjust onto it because i feel it really needs to be there i don't know why they don't just put two on there it's handy for pegging out the doors depending which way the wind is coming from you can tighten one side up for the other yeah i don't know why they didn't just add something like that you know than just a tab now the way i've added it on is interesting because i did have a couple of spare ones but potentially you could use the ones that are on the ends and when you see what i've done there you'll understand how to do it but without any sewing what i've done is i cut the back of this with a hot knife and then it let me slip it through onto the webbing and what i plan to do is then add some arrow date you know epoxy resin just to seal up that gap but to be honest it's a really strong clap and for just holding the door kind of closed it should be fine as we come around the tent here you'll see i have added these extra guideline points these were adhesive ones i've added on or stuck on and let it cure and i mentioned them in my last video and it's just giving me an extra pegging point on this big panel now so far it looks like it's going to work a treat it's just going to give that a little bit of extra stability to the tent in the really windy weather this is more so for autumn time come winter to be honest but i also have patches coming for the center panels here adhesive patches i'm waiting on i'm going to add guy points to that as well just to really strengthen or beef up the tent on my upcoming trip i have got some new tent pegs ordered i want to try out for the trip and hopefully they will arrive in time if not it's going to be the trusty groundhogs the groundhogs are an absolute pain pain in the backside to be honest to get in the ground because of the end very sharp and try push them in with your hand it's just a nightmare now somebody had mentioned in the comments below about using a bottle cap which got me thinking so i went on to amazon and i managed to find these plastic end caps and they're a 14 millimeter diameter and they seem to work great with the msrs these are the standard size pegs and a little bit loose they're actually tighter on some pegs rather than others i think it just depends how worn that the end is but they certainly fit on and what i would maybe do is put a hole through this plastic cap and then feed this pull cord through it and that way it's going to be on there and you're not going to lose it but for pushing into the ground fantastic what a difference now these smaller diameter ones do fit on the larger pegs these are the 190 millimeter cyclones they still go on with a bit of a push maybe go up a size i don't know but certainly works and honestly for putting into the ground what a difference so i thoroughly recommend you maybe try something like that save your hands i have also decided to get another sleeping mat and the reason being is that my other seater summit has sprung a leak and for the life of me i cannot find it i can't seem to fix it and i had been wishing i'd got this version to be honest because it's the woman's version and i'm hoping that this kind of yeah this kind of rounded shape is going to work well with the shape of the notch so it's not an ultraly matte but as i've said in a lot of my other videos you know you have to have a little bit of comfort and that's the one thing i will not skimp on don't mind don't try tents and things like that but the idea of not having a good night's sleep yeah has to be a good mat so let us blown up and we'll see how it fits when it comes to blowing up my mats i've just always used this and it's the exped schnozzle pump sack and it works with the sea to summit as well and you can also use the bag to put your spare posing the question is will it fat [Applause] like a glove this mat is wide long and it's fitting in here perfectly i'm really pleased and i was hoping that was going to be the case i can't believe how well this mat fits time for a coffee and it lets me move on to another subject which is what fuel i'm going to take on my trip i'm not entirely sure to be honest i haven't really used alcohol stoves that much i've always relied on gas and i'm wondering whether or not i should take gas or the alcohol system i don't know yet i really don't now this is a speedster stove setup which comes with a little stove and a windshield come put stand one of the benefits of the alcohol system is that it's quiet when it was boiling away there you could still listen to the birds chirping if i'd been my pocket rocket yeah it sounds like a jet engine so that's one of the benefits of the alcohol system this particular stove setup i got from speedster stoves quite a while ago actually and yeah it's the first time i've used it and it comes with an integrated windshield com pot stand also has this fold up heat resistant base and he makes these to suit different titanium cups and pots in this case it was made for my alp kit 600 cup so it fits perfectly inside it and it just really does block the wind well he also supplies this plastic tubing which you can feed onto the handles it just stops them getting hot when it's boiling the water and so far i'm really impressed i wish i'd used the airline now and a nice little a nice little bad cut when it comes to food on this particular backpacking trip i'm going to take dehydrated food again the last time i used the expedition foods and i thought they were really good i enjoyed them they're all fairly tasty they also happen to be the thousand calorie version and i bought them with my own money and i kind of done a review each day on the trail of what i thought of them i would say that the chicken karma i had is number one uh that's number two this men's beef hotpot and the bolognese is coming in at number three the only thing that put me off with the bolognese was it started to get a bit sickly after a while uh oh i had to swing start checking as well that was nice as well apparently yeah they're all good they've all been absolute and they're really filling and i did enjoy them so this time i have got something to eat i'm going to try these because i was actually offered some from the company to try out on my walk which was very kind of them and i'm going to see how they compare the main meals are a little bit smaller the ones i've got this time hopefully it's enough to keep me yeah going but for instance this is spicy pasta so i'm looking forward to trying them and seeing how they feel in comparison but one thing i am also thinking about is changing the way i carry this stuff and how i cook it what i'm actually going to do is try a new way of eating these meals and it means in the future i might actually try making some of my own and what i have done is taken the contents out of this and put it into this a vacuum sealed pouch it just frees up a little bit more space packaging-wise and what i'm hoping to do is have you know four or five of these together an elastic band and then you've just got your kind of food block don't get me wrong you can still stack these up and it doesn't take up much space but what i did find when i was on the cape rath is that you end up with all these used packets they're all full of waste food they're smelly and although i'd put into a kind of big ziploc bag yeah you're carrying all this kind of smelly food shall we say i wanted to maybe try something a bit different now what i wanted to try is this and it's a pouch which you can add boiling water to and it's made by a company called green island i searched internet to find this and i'm hoping it's going to do what i'm planning on this trip and what you do is you can open it up has a kind of fruit base in it i'm going to add my dehydrated smaller pouches pour in add the boiling water and then you can just zip up the top like that and let it sit and rehydrate this way i can eat out of this and then just when i have the opportunity i stream or what not just wash out i can also put in my porridge in the morning or even during the night put porridge in with water and let it soak overnight and then that way i have a very light plastic pouch that isn't wet or full of waste food or anything like that and i can just put that away in a little ziploc bag and done i think this might be a interesting way to take food on long walks i'm going to try it on this trap and also because this might be dirty and needing washed you can just put the top on fold up on the mesh section on the outside of my rucksack so that's what i'm going to do for eating on the trail and no doubt i will take some stuff like this which i've just had you know energy bars and things like that i'm also thinking about making up a peanut butter and honey kind of gel uh squeegee tube shall we say use the same kind of pouches that i've been using for this but put honey and peanut butter in it so i can just tear the corner and have that when i'm really flagging and need an energy boost and that's that that's it for this one you might enjoy this video over here and again maybe not as always thank you very much for watching and i hope at least some of this has been useful and until next time take care
