BA Textile Design - Winchester School of Art

the textile design program at Winchester School of Art offers a unique exciting and comprehensive learning experience for students in knitted printed and woven textiles when students come in first they will explore all the three areas and then they will select one of those I chose to do print you get to explore all different types of technique and I think also you get to choose if you want to be kind of more abstract or more commercial more illustrative when you get given your project you then get to like research around it and do sketchbook hang which they're really big on here and then when you've got your designs you then can like print them onto fabric and you can do digital and I prepared and then see which works were the collection just you to select knitted textiles you have the opportunity to start on the flatbed knit machine and then develop onto the do BA machines and the sheer mashiki machines in woven textile they start with the traditional smaller looms and then work up to the 24 shaft looms we have a jackdaw machine as well you have to prepare everything before you can sell anything it's not just an instant thing it starts of a lot of research a lot in the library of wicked by brain it's lots of like textile magazine so we can get a lot of fabric inspiration for us then we go to the yarn store then we decide on our warp and then we do lots like experiments with our work like testing different structures different yarns there's a very good atmosphere Winchester school of art is a very student-centered experience we have studio spaces for student they can make it their own they can put their work up they have close communication with staff we get to see the students every week sit and look at their work and have cheat Orioles with them help them in their development our students will also benefit from a year in employment they can take a year out after their second year the end result of all of the areas will allow students approach both fashion industry but also the interior industry and accessories industries as well they want you to be creative especially in your final year it's all about what you like and what you want to do when I came to visit I really liked the campus because it's just a dedicated arts campus it's for art courses here as part of a Russell group University we encourage students to become really strong intellectual researchers we look to the individual we look to developing that individual student into an individual designer
