today our family is about to fly nearly six hours from New York to Los Angeles on JetBlue mint if you want to fly Jet Blue Mint as well there's one really important mistake you need to avoid when booking so make sure you stick around to find out what it is and exactly how much we paid for this flight but first here's how we began JetBlue flies out of Terminal 5 at JFK and while I generally like the look and feel of this terminal one drawback is the airport security setup Terminal 5 does offer TSA pre-check but it does not offer clear so at busy times when even the TSA pre-check lines are long you can be in for a bit of a wait now one huge drawback of flying jet blue mint versus any other transcontinental premium options is that JetBlue mint does not have its own lounges recently JetBlue passengers were able to access the American Airlines Admirals Club even if they were not flying American as long as they were club members but I would imagine that access has now been revoked since the doj forced JetBlue and American to end their Northeast Alliance partnership so all that to say unfortunately there's no premium ground experience to be had when you're flying JetBlue mint now JetBlue mint rolled out a brand new mint cabin in 2021 with individual Suites in a herringbone Arrangement since it has a 1-1 configuration every Suite has direct aisle access we've flown the new JetBlue men cabin twice now first in June 2021 when JetBlue debuted the cabin on the JFK to LAX route on the a321 Neo and in October 2021 when they began flying it between New York and London on the Airbus a321lr I'll link to both of those flight reviews below today however we're flying the old jetblumen cabin it's our very first time trying this older product so I'm curious to see how it Stacks up the boarding process was smooth with mint and Mosaic passengers boarding first okay is the first impressions it's definitely very different obviously from the new mint Suite but it's pretty nice it feels like an older product which it obviously is one thing that I like immediately is that there's this huge counter space on my right hand side you know I love when business class seats have a lot of like storage space or like surface areas just to clear stuff and so that is definitely a really nice right off the bat now one thing that I'm not loving in the ifb it's the same basically interface as like the regular like coach life and it's that really sticky interface it's like really hard to like move around so I'm not really loving that definitely the Ife on the Newman is like significantly better before I continue telling you about our flight let me first explain the layout of the cabin on this Airbus a321 at the front of the plane is the mint cabin then there are five rows of even more space seats which is basically JetBlue's premium economy followed by seven rows of economy seats two more rows of even more space seats and finally the rest of the plane consists of 10 more rows of economy seats the men cabin has five rows of seats that alternate between a two two and one one configuration if you're a Solo Traveler you definitely want to opt for seat 2A 2f 4A a or 4f these seats are known as the throne Suites not only do they have direct aisle access but they also have sliding doors that close for complete privacy and they offer a few extra inches and seat width and seat pitch compared to the seats in the rest of the mid-cabin I was in c2f while my daughter's Sean and Ella were in seats 1D and 1f it's actually surprising to me that JetBlue doesn't charge anything extra for the throne Suites the way they do for the studios and the new mint cabin but it's definitely a first come first serve situation so you want to reserve those seats as early on as possible by the way if you enjoy videos like this about premium air travel be sure to subscribe I recently took a European business class product that I haven't flown before so you don't want to miss that video when it comes out also visit our channel to catch up on our recent flight reviews of a a the room Emirates Qatar Airways Q Suites Singapore Airlines zip air KLM and more in front of me of course we've got our Ife screen it's an okay size but pretty standard and here's my daughter being creepy and then here as you can see I do have a little door which I honestly was not expecting so that's kind of nice obviously this gets closed only after takeoff one thing that's kind of interesting is there's this like little storage bin here slides open and then you've got a little storage pouch here you've got another one here lots of outlets there's more on the other side as well it comes with a water you've got a reading light and you've got your seat controls here oh okay remote control I didn't even know this was here and then on this side you can see we've got this whole wide sort of surface piece which I absolutely love I love when I can kind of spread my stuff out especially with making content we always just have like cameras and battery packs and stuff like that so that's nice you've got two more Outlets over here and I'm guessing maybe the table will be here I guess we'll find out when it's dinner time as you can see we've got two windows of the seat of my action camera set up in this one and um so then under space you have this I guess you could put stuff here and then it will hold up there and then this is the footwell which is pretty spacious I've got this big blanket set here my shoes I actually have another little travel pillow in the back and of course this is a live flat seat as I so awkwardly demonstrate here and soon it was cocktail time okay so Serge and I both really love this which is mint condition we just can't lose like signature drink and the last time we flew gentlemen was when we went from New York to London and that was shortly after the London route had launched and so we were so looking forward to having this drink again and then the thing is when we boarded that flight this was kind of like still a height of the pandemic and there were all these like supply chain issues globally and for whatever reason they didn't have all of the ingredients to make them make Edition so we just couldn't have it at all on that flight that we had surge was so bumped because like that was definitely really a highlight the first time we had flown JetBlue bed and we were really looking forward to having it again so I'm glad that at least on this flight they're back okay let's talk about the food JetBlue partners with delicious Hospitality Group for its meals on mint this restaurant groups run several popular restaurants in New York the meals on this flight were from Charlie bird which serves italian-inspired new American fare we had five small plates to choose from two cold three warm I had panzanella a barley salad and some Cavatelli the food was not as good as on previous JetBlue mint flights we've taken so it seems like the quality of their catering has unfortunately gone down a bit so what's the big mistake to avoid when booking JetBlue mint well there are actually not one but two mistakes to avoid the first mistake is booking this Old Mint cabin when you are hoping to fly the snazzy Newman cabin JetBlue does not make it easy to see what product you're booking so you have to check the seat map to find out the old men cabins look like this alternating between a two two and one one configuration while the Newman cabins look like this with a 1-1 configuration throughout also it's becoming harder and harder to find the new mint cabin on domestic flights because they keep moving it to different routes it used to be available only on the JFK to LAX route but then they moved it to the Boston to LAX route and now I think it may be on yet another route I've honestly had a hard time keeping up at this point your best bet for flying the Newman cabin is to book a flight to Europe JetBlue currently flies to London and Paris and they'll soon start flying to Amsterdam as well the second big mistake to avoid is booking the wrong seat when you fly the old mid cap if you're flying with a companion it's totally fine if you end up in one of the odd numbered rows but if you're flying solo you'll have a far inferior experience and one of those seats versus in one of the throne Suites the armrest in the center is pretty small so you're likely to bump elbows quite a bit with the person next to you and while there is a small divider between the parrot seats it's not large enough to provide any real privacy remember if you're flying solo make sure you snag that Throne Suite so how much do we pay for these flights well we booked our flights in January and flew in May and we paid 1647.80 per person round trip from New York to Los Angeles and back that's not a bad fare for a transcontinental business class flight but we recently scored a much better deal can you believe that we pay just sixteen hundred dollars round trip for a live flat seat from Los Angeles to Tokyo and back but there is a catch check out this video where I show you which airline it was and the surprising reason the fair is so low
