ladies and gentlemen welcome back to another audacity tutorial I'm Josh Meyer of Josh Meyer Viacom I'm a professional voice talent and I've been doing this a long time and along the way I have picked up some pretty cool tips and tricks to help expediate your editing process and we know it can be daunting especially if you have a large chunk of audio such as a podcast or an audio book I can relate I've been there and I feel you however this is relevant to anybody who uses audacity we all want to expediate the editing process for sure so today I'm going to show you that and briefly just wanted to say thank you so much to you and the whole community for all of the kind words it's so flattering and it really has been my pleasure to serve you and to bring you value I've been able to really help people with private coaching and it's amazing to help people by diving into their personal projects and help bring their audio to the next level because if we're using audacity it's typically for a dream whether that be for music whether your dream is to record audio books whether your dream is to to record podcasts or it's a passion project so to be a part of that and to help bring somebody's dreams and passions to the next level has been really gratifying and big thanks to the audacity team for providing us with the best free recording software available hands-down make no mistake audacity is professional-grade and they've made it available to us for free so really incredible big thanks to Kate lavender and Peter Sampson who is a chief member of the audacity team Kate plugged me in with Peter and he was able to give me some some pre releases of the new version and allow me to do some alpha testing which has been great so anyway we have that coming up keep your eyes peeled for the new version and I will be doing a tutorial on what's new and how it can benefit us so without further ado today we're going to talk about how we can expediate the editing process so what I'm doing right now I'm simply just creating a track just so we have the sound waves here to play with and to listen to so you know we can imagine that this audio is any length so we're going through the process right and we all make mistakes when we're recording you know whether that be fumbling up a sentence we're reading the wrong thing or whatever and you know we want to get rid of that piece and keep what we like we always want to get rid of the bad and keep the good right so for instance let's say okay this was a mistake what I would typically do here is I would highlight that then I would go find silence and I would click silence and we want about a half second lead in to the audio so you know I would leave about a half second lead in and then I would cut that out and let's say okay I need to copy this and I want to paste it over here so we highlight that and we would go to copy and then we go over here and then we go find the paste again POW and I want to cut this so I go up here I hit the scissors I need to silence this and I go up here and I find the silence what if we didn't have to do that what if we didn't have to find all of those tools and run back and forth across the entire screen trying to click these tools what if there was a better way well ladies and gentlemen there is and I'm going to show you what it is okay so I'm going to undo all that stuff that I did what I want you to do is click Edit go down to preferences and when we open preferences we will find that if we click on keyboard we now have opened the list of all of our hotkeys and I've talked about this in my other tutorials knowing your hotkeys will save you so much time and hasil I kid you not and the more you use them the better you're going to be with them the more you'll remember more hotkeys so for instance you know whether it's Windows or Mac go to edit preferences click keyboard and now you have a list of all of your hotkeys and what we can do from here just briefly like we're running Windows right now for Mac users you know typically it's basically the same but instead of control you'd swap that out for command but if we want to know for a thousand percent what it absolutely is we go to keyboard and preferences and let's say we wanted to find duplicate what is duplicate duplicate we type in to the search bar and there it is amazing what is cut cut oops I need to spell that correctly cut ctrl X to easy let's copy copy there it is ctrl C so if you're looking for something specific to just jog your memory you can find it here but what I've been able to do that has been the gasps here is I have been able to change my silence to s I believe before it was ctrl L so what I did is I looked up silence an audacity did an amazing job of allowing us to customize some of these things just incredible so I clicked silence and it said ctrl L here and when I go to this bar anything that I type in let's say I typed in ctrl W it'll pop right up but what I did was I just typed s you and then I clicked ok and then afterwards I was able to highlight this s-silence it and then I want to leave a half second lead in time ctrl X cut and I wanted to copy this ctrl C and I wanted to paste it here ctrl V so much more quick I want to silence his space I want to silence his space you know I've got my finger hovering over the S because I know I want to silence a lot of these gaps right there's a lot of breath in there whatever it may be s just like that I want to give her that s s s okay s I need to copy that great ctrl C I need to pace that control V I want to duplicate this ctrl D you know this will save you an immense amount of time so once again ladies and gentlemen let's go to preferences and hey did you see that I saw a hotkey ctrl P Preferences boom just like that if you want to find something type it into the search bar duplicate okay ctrl D once again copy ctrl C cut ctrl X silence if you can change yours I recommend it but no matter what even if it was ctrl L and you couldn't change that still far more quick then doing the let me highlight this go find the tool click it furthermore I see a lot of people pressing play and there's nothing wrong with that is there a quicker way absolutely so let me just get rid of this additional track real quick is there a quicker way absolutely you want to play something spacebar you want to stop something spacebar you want to create a new recording just get rid of that I want to create a new recording record cool we're recording but instead of okay now that I'm done recording let me get my hand on the mouse you know because sometimes we're we want our hands-free when we're recording it helps bring the animation or whatever it may be but when we're recording often we don't have our hand on the mouse so when we want to stop it spacebar boom just like that I want to play it back spacebar boom just like that I want to highlight this and get rid of it silence I want to cut this control X I want to copy this control C I want to paste this control V I need to silence this area boom s there's breath here cool s s s ok I need to copy that sweet control C so you understand what I'm saying just knowing the hotkeys will save you an incredible amount of time but if you can change your silence to s like I've been able to and I showed you exactly how I do it so it doesn't work for you I probably don't have the solution but it will save you a ton of time trust and believe it so that is just some some cool tips and tricks on how to expediate some of this stuff we have a ton of breaths cool we can just highlight the breath silence let's just call that a breath we know it's not a breath but silence whatever you want to do whatever you want to do and if you make a mistake feel free to go to edit undo edit undo and you can go back so many steps so many steps look at that undo undo amazing so Tips & Tricks for you this will help you a lot I promise and the more you get familiar with the hotkeys the better off you're gonna be if you're in it to win it you're gonna do this all right so there you have it tips and tricks to help you expediate some of that daunting editing I mean we're lightning fast these days and I want you to be on that level as well so you can certainly get there now if you need help and your personal projects I am doing private paid sessions so if you're interested feel free to reach out until the next time take care stay safe and I'll see you soon you
