[Music] hello and a very warm welcome to you i'm haley palmer great to have you here with me on the show this evening now this is a show where my guests get to pick their favorite songs of all time and tonight's special guest is radio and tv personality and author lady colin campbell yes we'll be catching up with her in just a couple of minutes that is after a song to kick off the show lady colin cowboy it's lovely to have you here how are you thank you very much it's wonderful to be here and welcome to castle goring i know i thought it was a privilege it's absolutely beautiful here and your dog which we will show everyone later on uh she's called mickey and she's absolutely gorgeous isn't she she's four years old she is one of the three loves of my life well thank you so much it's an absolute pleasure to be here uh now we're gonna go into your first song yes nina simone my way um it's a brilliant version this song why have you chosen this song today well i chose it because i'm a great nina simone fan oh i actually saw nina simone live at ronnie scots oh she was a wonderful performer oh she was a fine musician she had a really interesting life she was a little bit abrasive etc etc but when you take into account her life and her circumstances you made allowances for it and i thought she was a really great talent and my way is one of the premier songs of my generation yes and [Music] the nina simone version in my opinion yes is the best of them all i know paul anchor wrote it for frank sinatra and frank sinatra's cover is wonderful but i don't think anything beats nina simone i agree i've heard a lot of versions of this song but this one is just brilliant we're going to check out the video to this and we will see you after no lady colin campbell i've got to say i saw you when i'm a celebrity get me out of here and i thought you were just fabulous you won me and my parents around we were rooting for you throughout the whole series just brilliant what was it like in there well it was a little bit of a nightmare if the truth be known although i loved a lot about it and i think it's a wonderful program and i can't sing the praises of the people who produce it highly enough uh and i actually like the setting because i was born and brought up in jamaica i'd always wanted to go camping we weren't allowed to go camping so this was 60 years later i was having a childhood dream realized having said that some of the campmates were insufferable and uh you know they were busy pressing my buttons because two of the men wanted to have me leave the camp because they thought i was gonna win and they wanted to win and neither one of them stood the chance of winning i never thought it never even occurred to me that i could possibly win it you know uh because i'd never seen the program before so i didn't really know anything about it there but anyway it was it was an experience but i think also people were quite surprised that somebody who's from a prominent family uh and married into another prominent family could have the mouth of a sailor when it was required well of course they only need to listen to princess anne when she lets rip to know that in fact all ladies irrespective of their rank know how to cuss when this situation warrants this is true and what do you think about it this year it's not going to be in the jungle it's going to be in a castle yes yes i think i think actually it's a good time to recalibrate it because in my opinion since i did it the show has got so much harder and it was already hard when i did it you know all those challenges i mean you know sort of i don't know how you did it lady c honestly absolutely impressive stuff and then we're going to go into your next song choice this is one of my personal favorites as well uh will you love me tomorrow which was written by jerry goffin and carol king of course just beautiful isn't it yes it's a wonderful song i've actually seen the carole king's show oh beautiful yes wonderful show isn't it yes and uh she had an amazing life and uh that song means a lot to me ah because it's it reminds me of my first great love and he used to whenever it came on he used to mouse the words you know like because he was an american footballer and i was what in those days was called a society girl and he thought that our backgrounds our knights not gel for the long term well i actually was so in love with him that i would have gladly sacrificed everything for him i love this and by the time he came around to the realization that maybe it could work he talked me out of it but we still remained in touch for many years he's a wonderful man i have nothing but good memories good memories well i'm glad it means a lot to you and um it's a beautiful song i hope you enjoy it at home as well here it is this is the leslie grace version um which is a beautiful version and i hope you enjoy it now we've got a question from one of our viewers angela she wants to know you've had such an interesting life if you had to relive one moment of your life again what would it be that's quite tricky to answer isn't it but is there anything you just think wow i'd love to do that again yes there is oh but it's a sort of two-parter it would be when i first saw each of my boys oh the moment that i saw misha yeah was in the orphanage and they brought him to me stalk more naked except for a cap on his head and they pointed out what a fine figure of a boy he was if you get the drift oh because very you know russia is very down to earth and i looked at him and i took him in my i held him up and i looked at him directly and he was only three months old and three-month-old babies don't normally make absolute eye contact and i said would you like me to be your mummy and he gurgled with delight and from that moment to this yeah and then after i asked if i could see the baby that had been airmarked for me which misha had replaced and i saw dima sleeping peacefully in his carts i knew that the reason why they didn't want me to have him was because they said he had a double kidney right and then i saw him and i asked what was going to become of him and the idea of leaving that angel who in an orphanage was just beyond comprehension so i sort of agitated with the agent who spoke to the people responsible and they allowed me to have both boys it i think it was good for them oh i don't regret having done it i think it was the best thing i ever did in my life but i think it would have been in terms of my relationship with them easier if i had had one than the other but you know life throws up choices that's right that you have to really make a choice and stick to it and not everything is easy and sometimes things are colored by downsides because really two children of the same age at the same time he's a lot tougher than one child and how old are they now they're 27 coming up for 28 early next year goodness and they're wonderful boys they are wonderful boys just brilliant you've met them haven't you got them i have met them they're an absolute delight so uh shane they couldn't be with us today but uh i know but this is why we've got uh mickey who's uh still sleeping here so so mickey is not a bad substitute you know i'm a big dog your next song summertime ella fitzgerald recorded this in 1968. um now this is beautiful isn't it i am a great fan of gershwin oh i'm a great fan of ella fitzgerald oh i would actually have preferred to have heard this willard white version right i haven't seen willard for a few years now but i have very fond memories of willard but since i couldn't use the willard white version i think the ella fitzgerald version is a very commendable substitute because he's a wonderful tone but she was a marvelous torch singer just i agree well i know we've got a lot of people tuning in at home that will love this too enjoy it and we will both see you after this now i want to talk to you about your book which i have here um it's called megan and harry the real story and i think a lot of us are very intrigued by this and i feel like this would be definitely a good read well it's got some wonderful reviews it's got to be said yes uh which i'm very pleased about uh it's also got because megan and harry have a very effective pr team uh who they pay a vast amount of money to trying to always shut down any of their critics so it also has had uh quite an interesting ride in terms of sunshine sex their american pr people are getting agents of theirs to denigrate the book etc etc uh to such an extent that amazon had to call into question some of the reviews oh i so you can we'll put details on the screen of uh how you can get hold of the book yeah i'm sure we're very interested to read that now your next song choice i'm going to try and pronounce this correctly ladonna er mobile yes [Laughter] why this song choice it's bad verdi from rigoletto which is one of the great operas and verdi is one of rarely the great italian composers of opera and it's sung by the three tenors i remember the three tennis concerts in hyde park uh it was a huge thing at the time uh it was i've met jose carreras as well who basically domingo and pavarotti joined forces with him because he had leukemia and his medical treatment was so expensive that he was going to be wiped out financially and possibly not be cured if they did not intervene so i mean what a you know what a wonderful human's interest story and so they actually did the three tennis concerts to raise money for him right and so i knew the background yes because i come from a musical family uh in fact my cousin sir peter jonas was for many years the managing director of the english national opera and then he went to the bavarian state opera uh and my brother wanted to study music but my parents wouldn't allow it so we come from a very musical background and i love opera and i particularly love rigoletto which i first saw performed at the met in new york and i have to tell you there is no production in my opinion that ever beats a metropolitan opera production in new york because in england we now at covent garden and the eno sometimes sort of modernize things and uh the met is pretty traditionalist and you know you can't improve on perfection so don't even bother to try and they have the money to get the top singers which of course we actually get the top singers and conductors as well yeah but they they have more money to have more lavish lush productions and new york here we come now i need to make it happen well i'm so glad that we can play out one of your favorite tunes for you ladies here it is and we will see you after [Applause] [Music] ah lady c it's been such an honor to be with you and to be here at castle goring thank you so much for having me oh my dear it's been my pleasure it's been an absolute delight to see you again after all these years i know that's been three or four years ago but you're looking marvelous thank you so are you yes we're going for the queen today aren't we yes we're working this so uh we're gonna go with your last song choice again i hope that i get this right uh quindizi from verdi's la traviata by jane sutherland and luciano pavarotti yes yes yes yes quite a song well the drinking song from la traviata is really one of the great songs of all time and joan sutherland was really one of the great well both joan sutherland and luciano pavarotti actually were two of the great singers of all time so it's a wonderful combination of greatness and it's also very joyous and it's you know indeed right now yeah and opera is either very tragic or very exuberant and i mean there's a reason why they used to say in the days when people were rather more classically educated than they are now that oh somebody's operatic was rarely a put down it meant that they were hyperdramatic and uh opera is hyperdrama and you know it's either or it's and bring daisy is absolutely at the top of everything positive about opera and i just it's a wonderful song you can't at the end of it can't help feeling roused amazing well we're going to play out that song but lady c thank you so much it's lady colin campbell everyone thank you my dear for coming and thanks everybody for listening thank you ah we've now come to the end of the show but a huge thank you lady c just wonderful and a huge thank you to you at home for tuning in and supporting the show weekly it is very much appreciated now i'm gonna leave you with one of my favorite songs i hope that's okay and i will definitely see you same time same place next week i'm haley palmer i'll see you then [Music] you
