i wonder what would happen if i asked for a gaming pc recommendation from best buy they sell a bunch of gaming pre-built from various sis or system integrators and of course you could reach out to those size individually and probably get better results than if you contacted best buy but a lot of people don't know about sis you know like let's say you're new to pc building or if you're a parent who's looking for a gaming pc for your kid you don't know who i buy power is or abs you're probably just going to go to somewhere like best buy now there's two ways we can do this we can go online to their website and use their shop with an expert feature get somebody on the phone who can actually recommend us a pc or we can walk into a physical best buy store and have somebody on the floor recommend us one there i say we do both because it'll be interesting to see if their recommendations line up with each other or if we get two wildly different results so we're really pitting best buy against itself to see how well it can recommend a gaming pc to an average non-techie customer who i'm going to pretend to be today in order to see how well the pc fulfills that person's needs and i think i'm going to make some stuff up here let's just say i have a 2560 by 1440p monitor i have a budget of two thousand dollars pre-tax i've got a few games picked out let's say they're all let's say they're all like nvidia favored titles like cyberpunk uh red dead redemption 2 control games that leverage rtx and dlss which should prompt the reps at best buy to recommend a pc with modern nvidia graphics but we can't make it too easy for them because i'm just an average non-techie customer i'm going to leave it to them to ask me those questions to find out what my needs are and then make the best recommendation for it let's do the phone call first before we continue this video is brought to you by cdkoffers.com a one-stop shop for reliable gaming software keys right now they're offering get a best buy team member to help you out your call may be recorded and monitored thank you for choosing best buy this is with the national sales team how can i assist you today hi um i'm just looking to buy a gaming pc i'm not super tech savvy so i was hoping that um someone could give me a recommendation sure uh was there anything specific are you producing it for yourself or yeah it would be for myself are there any specific system requirements that you were hoping to have i do have like uh i'd like to keep the budget under two thousand dollars um pre-tax i mean i already have the gaming monitor and like i know what games i want to play but i'm not i'm not too privy with like the specs and stuff okay what games are you gonna be playing uh so like um cyberpunk would be one of them um red red dead redemption 2 and uh control would be another one okay do you have any particular brand that you like to stick with uh no no i'm not not too certain of of the brands either okay perfect let me pull up some options here i actually have a pretty good um asus gaming computer option that's on sale right now so it's actually a really good deal it has a good graphics card it has a one terabyte hard drive that's the fastest processor on the market 16 gig memory and it's 14.99 regularly priced at 18.49 i could actually give you the best buy sku number and you could pull it up on our website to see like everything about it if you'd like yeah that'd be great it's 646-4203 core i9 okay rtx 30 oh wait uh a laptop actually popped up oh yeah oh were you looking for a desktop i'm sorry i missed that part yeah it would be for a desktop sorry i didn't specify sorry i thought you said i could have worn you this laptop okay let me go ahead and go back oh i think i just said gaming pc so technically a laptop counts as that but but i think you also mentioned that you had a monitor so that was my fault oh it's all good okay all right let's go back now let me see if i can find something comfortable to that i have a good option with one of the newer graphics cards so this one i'll give you this item number so this one's 1949. it's also on sale it has an i7 processor with the rtx 3080 graphics card so that's definitely a plus there that processor is brand new so or that um graphics card is brand new so i think that computer is a really good buy for that price okay cool um do you think this would be the like the best one that you'd recommend on the on the whole site i would say yes everything else that's kind of between the 1600 to 1900 price range has like a 30 60 graphics card 360 ti 30 80 graphics card you really don't find in unless you're spending over two thousand dollars so i think that's a really good buy i would say yeah i'd go for it okay cool yeah that all sounds good um would it be possible because i have one more call to make just to cross-reference stuff um do you have like a direct line that i can contact you back at if i'm ready to buy this guy okay not too shabby honestly i'm kind of impressed she did a pretty good job all things considered i thought customer service was more or less top-notch she was very nice kind inviting accommodating answered all my questions and patient with me being a tech noob i feel like she asked me some good questions like exactly what kind of games that i'm playing and she did actually recommend me an nvidia graphics card which i thought um was was good she didn't actually explain why she recommended an nvidia gpu i think that would have been a nice touch to be like just as a reassurance to a customer oh these are the games you're playing this graphics card's really going to take advantage of the technologies that these games support um that would have been cool there were a couple things that she missed though initially recommending me a gaming laptop as opposed to a pre-built desktop i think that should have been one of the first questions are you looking for a mobile gaming solution or a gaming tower she could have just misheard me it's very possible that she thought i said laptop when i said gaming pc and the other thing is that she didn't ask what my monitor resolution was that was a really simple and important question that would have easily helped her justify me spending two thousand dollars on a pc versus 1500 or something more budget-oriented i would have just given me that extra reassurance as a customer that i actually do need this extra horsepower to push more pixels let's take a closer look at the desktop she recommended for 1950 just shy of my 2 000 budget core i7 11700 kf that's an 8 core 16 thread processor 16 gigs of memory would have been nice to get a 32 gig system for 2 grand but this could just be a limitation of the sis this one is from asus by the way it's an asus rog gaming desktop should have led with that nvidia geforce rtx 3080. i was actually surprised when she said this has a 3080 in it for two grand i was thinking that the best we would do would be like an rtx 3070 maybe a 30 70 ti so this is actually pretty sweet two terabyte hard drive and a 512 gig ssd i don't hate that that's fine but let's have a look at the pc okay so thermals honestly thermals in most pre-builds is going to be garbage so i can't really fault her for that that's more on the sis uh it's got a handle i like the handle is this an acrylic panel honestly it's fine uh i don't know i didn't say anything about aesthetics maybe she could have asked more about aesthetics aesthetic preferences but i'm not complaining that her main focus was on performance of course oh look at the gpu okay so we've got a this is like a turbo card we've got a blower style card here on our 3080 so this is something that she could have pointed out she could have said you know it is a blower style card which means it is going to get a bit warmer it's definitely going to get a bit louder but i think the performance tradeoffs for a 3080 versus something lower end like a 30 70 36 pti are well worth it that would have been a helpful tidbit of information for her to share with me overall surprisingly i'm not disappointed with this recommendation although did she nail it or is there something better on this website for under two grand like is this the pc that i would have chosen knowing what i know as a tech youtuber if i were to have just gone on the best buy website and looked up the options myself or is there something better out there that alexa missed why don't we check it out laptops and desktops gaming desktops my budget is two thousand dollars click that i want nvidia graphics card up there's only one pc in that price range that has an rtx 3080 is it the one that she recommended yes it is i mean unless my goal as a customer was to get something other than the fastest possible gaming pc for my money this seems to be the best option on the site so yeah nailed it honestly bravo best buy your call center staff seems confident and well trained enough to make a decent recommendation for a gaming pc but let's see if your in-store employees are just as good now i don't expect anyone at best buy to recognize me but just to be safe i've covered myself up best i can hopefully my poo brown eyes aren't too recognizable and obviously the brick and mortar store is going to have way fewer options available than best buy's website so i'm kind of curious to see if they only recommend me options that they have in store or if they're going to hop on a computer and look at everything they have available on the website like alexa did i'm gonna let them know from the get-go though that i'm not necessarily looking to bring home a pc today i'm just looking at my options so hopefully that'll prompt them to show me more than just what they have in store and unfortunately i don't have a stealthy way of filming video inside the store without being obvious but i can record audio relatively easily without being spotted so i'm just gonna go with that i'm not sure what b-roll i'm gonna use while you guys are listening to the audio maybe some videos of my cats at any rate i've just arrived so let's see how this goes all right i'm back i just returned from the store i was in there for about 20 minutes or so i had a conversation with two different people about the gaming pc and there's a lot to talk about here we're gonna go through the audio clip i'm just gonna play it back and stop it periodically so i can discuss notes and my feedback we'll talk about the good the bad and everything in between and uh unfortunately i don't have any b-roll clips of my cats i figured that would be too distracting you wouldn't be paying attention to anything that was being said so instead you could look at something less interesting like my face while we do this excuse me uh do you guys um have anyone who could recommend a gaming pc would i be able to recommend you a gamer suit what do you have what kind of games you're trying to play with uh so i guess like cyberpunk um red dead two okay uh control control this is about it right no streaming nothing on the side you know anything not just gaming for the most part yeah sure i mean honestly you can't really go wrong with any of the gaming desktops in that case that have at least like an i7 or even an amd seven you know i7 or amd7 uh you can even game with an i5 but you know if you want to eventually explore into like really graphical intense games like where that's when pressure hasn't like topped out sightings that even a little bit struggle yeah i would just stay like r7 give or take okay i have decent robotic ram um this is going to be one of them right here okay there's also going to be some microphones there but that we have on display i'm not 100 sure i'm still new to the store so i'm not 100 sure what we got there's no like uh gaming pc expert here yeah you want someone who's gonna be the guy right behind him he's building his own pc and all that kind of stuff oh is he yeah okay cool should i ask him then yeah just go ahead okay cool thank you okay so this first guy that i talked to first guy i talked to in the store uh he was nice he was very friendly and let's talk about what he got right first off he asked me right away what games i'm trying to play and he also asked me if i was just gaming or if i'd be streaming as well maybe multitasking that sort of thing so that's that's good right off the bat that's good but that's sort of where the good things end with this convo he then goes on to say that you can't go wrong with any of the gaming desktops oh you can definitely go wrong with many gaming desktops so i'm not sure what he was talking about there and then he suggests that as long as there's an i7 or an amd ryzen 7 processor in the system that i should be good he even said that i can game with just a core i5 um there was no mention of a graphics card no mention of a gpu so i'm not sure if this guy is aware that you you definitely need a discrete gpu if you want a game reasonably well i'm not going to lie this may be very skeptical as to how the rest of this experience would go and also i had to ask him if there was somebody else in the store who knew more about pcs than him that should have been something that he immediately suggested to me like oh there's a guy right there that knows way more than i do and can make a better recommendation go ask him these things that would have been the right thing to do what would have happened if i didn't ask that would i have just gone home with an intel nook with integrated graphics i don't know let's let's see how the second guy does excuse me he uh you were the gaming pc expert yeah yeah some level what can i do with it i'm just looking to get a gaming fee i don't really know much about it so a pre-build or are you looking like a pre-built okay there's a gaming laptop or an actual freak actual pre-built yeah we have a couple of options now we don't have a kind of options unfortunately right now okay order some online okay uh really it goes into what you're trying to use for gaming though like yeah like games like csgo or you playing more intense games um so i was i was telling him i'm looking like to play cyberpunk uh red dead redemption two high graphic games there okay yeah and uh yeah control maybe yeah okay so this guy right out of the gate already seems much more knowledgeable than the other guy he did ask me if i was looking for a laptop or a pre-built desktop that's good and he also asked me what games i wanted to play as soon as i said cyberpunk and red dead 2 he immediately knew these are graphically intensive games let's see what he recommends um with that in mind i mean we have options like this one cool build cyber power 1879 why the price is so high on that high-end processor high-end graphics card so it's going to be able to handle those games as well okay what what uh g graphics card is it this one has a 60 um 6600 or 6800 xt if i'm not mistaken oh wait 67 it's just 67. there's yeah okay one above it that has a 6800 xt um and then there's also one above that one as well that's the 30 70. okay i would say sticking with nvidia is probably going to be the better vet nvidia gaming okay um if you're doing like video editing at all yeah would be good but yeah video are gaming wise and video is gonna be the better okay okay so the first system he shows me on the floor is a pc that has radeon graphics it has an rx 6700 xt which to be fair they only had maybe two or three gaming pcs on display at this store it was it was pretty measly so maybe he just wanted to show me something physical like look we have computers here i promise but uh i thought it was interesting that he immediately showed me one with radeon graphics he then goes on to suggest however that an nvidia gpu would be better for gaming as he said but he doesn't explain why that is so i'm not sure if he just has a personal preference towards nvidia or if he was actually taking into consideration the games that i had mentioned and understanding that these have nvidia technologies that nvidia gpus can leverage so uh that was a little unclear but at least we're sort of on the right track he's guiding me towards team green i have options let me show you what i have though online or yeah well all of them are up there i don't have a lot of displays of them okay yeah they're just gonna be more and i don't i don't i'm not necessarily looking to bring a pc home today i was just kind of looking at my options yeah no definitely and like also this is like as far as budget goes like yeah this is actually not bad because i'm trying to stay under 2000 like pre-tax yeah so what i have i mean great option if you're looking to do something at a good price this one here i7 16 gigs with a 30 60 ti so a good one 15.99 okay 480 gigs of storage so low on the storage unfortunately okay um all right so i tell my budget finally it's two thousand dollars i'm trying to stand under that and that i don't really need a pc today i'm just kind of exploring options so he then proceeds to pull out his phone starts looking up options on the best buy website which is good uh because they didn't really have many options in store anyway the first one he brings up is an eye by power system that is well under my budget it's like 15 1600 it's got a core i7 and rtx 360 ti it's a decent system but not really as powerful as i'm willing to spend on so i give them a nudge at this point tell him that i'm willing to max out my budget for the right pc yeah i'm like i'm willing to spend like up to two grand if it's worth it you know but i just i just don't know like if 2000 is like if i need 2 000 worth of power or i'm being honest i don't think you do unless you're planning on streaming and recording all of the stuff that you're going to be playing as well yeah then i would say invest in the more money because that is going to help with that okay but for the most part if you're just gaming and you want to just enjoy it as much as possible maybe you're doing something like recording and edit yeah like editing and all that but nothing like crazy right then staying in like the 14 to 1800 price point would be good okay you shouldn't have a problem what is okay just hypothetical like what if uh i was looking for like the fastest pc that i could get for 2000. for 2000 um definitely wouldn't be in stock but i have options okay [Music] so i go on to ask him if i actually need to spend two grand on a gaming pc um and he says no he recommends anywhere between 1400 to 1800 would be a good sweet spot and i was kind of hoping that he wouldn't answer the question so black and white because the answer isn't really black and white right like two thousand dollars on gaming pc is completely necessary if you're gaming at 4k and trying to target 144 hertz this would have been a perfect opportunity for him to ask me what resolution i'm gaming at do am i trying to game on a single monitor triple panel you know am i doing 4k or 1080p uh that was sort of a missed opportunity i think that would have really helped him narrow down what kind of gaming experience i'm looking for and in order to make a better suggestion but let's see what he recommends me when i tell him that i want to spend the full 2k really what you want is something with a high graphics card yeah and honestly i would i would suggest this one here it's an i7 16 gigs of ram a 30 3080 graphics card which is going to be probably like one of the best graphics cards you could get okay um he recommended the exact same asus rog pre-built that did on the phone this is fantastic to see this is what we were hoping to get was consistency in the recommendations between the in-store employees and the on-phone staff and that's exactly what we're seeing here and this was the very first system that he recommended me so uh nice job good job best buy you're training your employees well or maybe i just got really lucky this time around i don't know but so far so good let's see what else he has to say and then there's other options if you're trying to go past that two thousand dollar price point to get something like way better yeah where it have like a better processor more ram or whether or not a better graphics card or water cooled because they do liquid cooling systems in them for example like this yeah you'll see the liquid cooling systems in the back okay goes into the processor so it just keeps the computer cool and quiet i see um when you go to the higher ones it'll be like a higher end model of this so it'll be like two fans to cool this entire system and just so overall better sound quality because it's gonna be quieter than the standard ones with the big fan god okay i get it okay so he's kind of telling me what i could expect to get for more than two thousand dollars if i was willing to shell out more cash he's saying a higher end cpu probably a higher end gpu and an aio for better cooling and acoustics so that's good i like that he mentioned the cool quiet factor because that's important to a lot of people um but at the same time like alexa he didn't actually notice that the gpu in that asus rog pre-built is a blower style card that is usually anything but cool and quiet so it kind of negates what he was trying to upsell me on the aio i don't know if this was just a limitation in his knowledge or if he just simply didn't care enough to look at the actual gpu like the picture of the of the card um on on the website either way that would have been nice to know he's he's he's definitely helpful in some ways but also missing certain things that he could have added uh to the whole buying experience i'm trying to think like the flip side of going like you know fastest i can get for 2000 i guess the flip side would be what's like the best i guess value that i could get let's say like not necessarily the most expensive but the sort of sweet spot you know um two thousand dollars is honestly a good sweet spot oh yeah okay if you really need to invest in a computer for like streaming and stuff like i said like if you're doing more with the computer than just gaming um you want to make sure it's good say about 2500. okay i would just be gaming though like i'm not really interested in streaming so much some of my friends do but and that's where like the one that i showed you the asus one would be the best bet because it has a strong graphics card probably more powerful than most people have right now yeah i'm a good processor yeah obviously the processor can be better um but that's where the price comes in and then also ram it has 16 but you can expand to 32 gigs or even 64 if you want okay the benefit of getting that asus one asus makes great products and they're actually going to put an asus motherboard inside okay which is usually strong enough to handle higher end like ram or any like processor i see awesome thank you so much man appreciate it okay this was weird earlier just a few minutes prior in this conversation he said that i don't need to drop two grand on a pc that he wouldn't recommend it in that anywhere between 1400 and 1800 should be perfectly fine if i'm only gaming but then a few minutes later here he says that two grand is a good sweet spot so his advice is very inconsistent here and it threw me up i feel like it would confuse an average consumer or an average customer i mean i already know all this stuff you know like the back of my hand and i was confused when he said that i was like wait that's like not what you said five minutes ago so uh that was just weird uh but despite his inconsistency in the end he did recommend the asus pre-built um the same one that alexa did and reassured me that it has a fast graphics card for gaming it has an option for ram expansion and i like the fact that he also pointed out that it has an asus motherboard because it's an asus rog pre-built but i think that's important it also demonstrates his knowledge to a degree it shows that he's aware that there are certain prebuilts out there that have absolute garbage motherboards that are just from no-name brands or completely generic they have crap power supply or crap power deliveries or maybe only two dimm slots for your ram uh and so the fact that he pointed that out uh i i really appreciate it just as a tech youtuber and honestly even though that bit of information would probably go over the average consumer's head i think it's still relevant information totally worth sharing and if anything else it would instill a bit more confidence in the buying decision i mean overall i'm pleasantly surprised best buy could have royally botched this very easily like we've seen many sis do in countless videos across the web the staff was friendly they were helpful and the recommendations again were consistent between the on-phone staff and the in-store employees uh the only big oof here was the first guy that i spoke to at the store best buy needs to train their employees that if there's another staff member that's present that knows more about a topic that a customer is asking about than they do they should immediately point them to that person instead of trying to scramble together some half-assed answer that's going to misdirect or mislead a customer into making a bad purchase you know i'm so curious now if i had done this entire experiment yesterday instead and gotten a different rep on the phone and a different rep in the store would my experience sucked or would it have been just as consistently decent as it was today i can't really say because i've only done this one time but you know it's it's reassuring to know that this one time that i've done it it was it was overall very positive positive just like today's sponsor govi the govi immersion kit brings your tv and entertainment center to life by dynamically syncing colors to what's on screen the kit includes an rgb strip for your display and two light bars that emit bright vivid lighting for a viewing experience like never before the gobi glide is a wall mountable light bar that features rainbow-like effects and can display multiple colors on each of the six included bar strips choose from a variety of preset lighting effects diy your own or experience a light show that syncs to your music for more info click on the link in the description below so i'd love to hear what you guys have to say about it if you've ever gotten a recommendation for a gaming pc or even gaming laptop from best buy in the past please share your experience down below i want to see if it was similar to mine that's going to do it for this video guys
