2023 updates! 12 must try food in Asakusa! Hi, I'm Samurai Junjiro, born and raised in Japan.  In today’s video, we will explore street food in Asakusa.  We will share with you 12 shops that we have not yet covered before. There will also be our top 3 announced in the end so keep watching till the last. Now let’s get started! We have arrived at Asakusa.  We have shared with you Asakusa street food videos before in the channel. If you have not watched it yet, please be sure to check that too. Additional to street food, we also went through No.1 hotel, the Hoppy street and souvenirs that you could purchase in Don Quijote in Asakusa. Now let’s get down to street food hunting. Our first stop is Asakusa Taco-taco. This is a Takoyaki octopus ball shop that started last October. The shop is known as a place, where you can eat authentic Takoyaki like it’s home in Osaka. There are other fried snack menus but we picked up Takosen, which are frequently bought by customers. On top of a flat rice cracker, Takoyaki is placed on top with mayonnaise and served. The rice cracker is made with shrimps and has a slight sweetness. The savory smell of the sauce is in the air.  Takoyaki is melty and creamy. The change of texture from fried tempura batter crumbs are great. It’s surely a quality that does not fall behind to those of Osaka. We will next be checking out Asakusachaya Tabanenoshi. It’s a green tea dessert shop that started in May last year. Their top seller is crepe. Out of 5 selections, we chose this one. This is green tea tiramisu crepe. On top of whipped crepe, the green tea powder writes Asakusa. Amazing smell of green tea! In the batter of the crepe is plenty of green tea too. Slight bitterness is a flavor for grown ups. Underneath the whipped cream is green tea ice cream. Its mild sweetness really goes together with the whipped cream. The cream contains mascarpone cheese. So it’s creamy and has depth in flavor. On the very bottom layer is a biscuit which soaked up espresso. The bitterness and the crunch from the biscuit are quite a nice change. Moving on to talk about Tomochan no Nikuman.  This is a steamed bun specialty shop, with regular menus of 20 or more different variety to choose from. There are buns with lambs and pork but we had to try out the shop’s recommendation of beef bun today. For the bun in this store uses milk in the batter so there’s hidden sweetness to it. Beef is spicy with flavors from chilli and Sichuan peppers. The flavor of the beef has been fused into the bun too.  This is a must try to those who likes something spicy.  Now to introducing Kobegyu Daia Asakusa Ichigoten.  This is a Kobe beef focused shop began in last December.  In the video about Tokyo tower, we mentioned another shop which is ran by the same company. There are menus like meat Sushi but we are having skewered Kobe beef. Only after the order is being placed, they start grilling at the shop so you get to experience the freshly prepared skewers. The smell of the beef is so appealing. It’s seasoned with salt and pepper so there’s no need for additional flavors. It melts in your mouth! The meat is very flavorful and there’s sweetness to it too. It also comes with minced fish called Hanpen, peppers and Shiitake mushrooms too so you can enjoy the variety of ingredients. Our next shop is a bakery called Pankobo COURAGE.  Its business has been running for over 10 years so has quite a passage. You can choose from many but let us show you this bread that many purchases. This is Asakusa Anpan. On top of square shaped bread, it writes Asakusa imprinted with iron. The dough for the bread is made with yogurt and has moist mouthfeel. The bread smells wonderful of milk and egg. Inside the bread is packed with sweet red beans paste and whipped cream. The beans paste with moderate sugar and whipped cream are perfect together. It feels very light and it has more of a dessert feel.  Now to taking a look at Senkaraya Asakusa shop. This is a fried chicken shop started in August 2021. The popularity of fried chicken from the shop has allowed them to win numerous awards. We have picked up this SNS viral chicken. For the coating of the chicken, rice cracker crumbs are included to be fried together. It’s a colorful and cute looking fried chicken.  The fried rice cracker crumbs have crispy textures like fried snacks. The chicken inside is juicy and the juice is overflowing! It’s well marinated with soy sauce. Despite its cute color, the flavor is no joke. And on next to explore Pie face Asakusa.  The shop serves pies and opened in September 2020.  Its origin is in Australia and currently has 2 stores in Japan. You see many pies lining up but let’s pick the most purchased pies of all. The pies have eyes and mouth written on the front and they are so adorable. Abundant butter is used for the pie sheet so it’s very aromatic. This pie has steak in the filling. The gravy sauce is very rich in flavor. The touch of black pepper adds nice kick. It’s a filling pie! Over to next is Asakusa Silk Pudding. It’s a 15 year running custard pudding shop. The popularity is often featured in TV and magazines.  Let us share the top seller custard pudding. For this pudding, only the yolk part of egg is used so the flavor is more richer when compared to pudding from the other shops. It’s very aromatic since it contains plenty of vanilla beans. The sweetness of milk is subtle since it uses milk and whipped cream. It’s very creamy and melts in your mouth. The very bottom is caramel sauce. The sweetness of the sauce is very limited and has a moderate bitterness. It helps to grade up the flavor of the pudding. Followed by that is Toyofuku. There’s only one menu of curry bread to choose from but committed to their product. Next to this shop is Asakusa Menchi, where you can try the famous ground meat croquette in Asakusa. We shall then be trying the curry bread. You can always get your hands on freshly prepared bread so what they serve is piping hot. The bread part is very chewy and bouncy. It’s packed with Japanese beef inside. The beef is simmered for 8 hours and more with the curry sauce so it literally melts. The curry sauce is not too spicy but has depth flavor like demi glacé sauce. What a gorgeous curry bread! And then next to Asakusa Monja Croquette. It’s a croquette shop opened in 2014. They fry their croquette with order so you can always eat it in the best temperature. Today we will be taste testing its No1 seller of Monja croquette. Sauce is fragrant and it increases my appetite! Inside its outer crumbs is packed with Tokyo’s local specialty Monjayaki. I’m sensing the crunch from red pickled ginger and cabbage, which really is exactly the same as the normal Monjayaki. Its small size is suited to eat while strolling. Let us now share Kagetudo. Its specialty is melon bread and this shop started in 1945. It’s definitely a shop that represent Asakusa and lines of people are formed everyday. And this is the bread that sells for more than 3000 pieces.  Its outer surface has biscuit like crispiness. Inside is unbelievably soft! It’s so aromatic with butter. It’s sweet and almost have a melty texture. The size is relatively big but it’s so airy that you could easily finish the whole bread. And to sum up the video, the last shop we will be checking is Asakusa Unana. The shop sells to go eel menus. Soon after lunch is often sold out so we highly recommend on checking out at 11, which is when the shop opens. From here, we are trying Unagi no Onigiri, a grilled rice ball with eel on top. The smell of its sweet sauce is fantastic! I love how the eel on top is pretty large. Aroma from Japanese pepper increases appetite too. Eel is fatty and melts in your mouth. Crisp surface of the grilled Onigiri rice ball has soaked up the sweet sauce and it’s so good! Such an amazing and fulfilling rice ball. If you are not so great with tingling spiciness of the Japanese pepper, you can order Onigiri without it so let them know in advance. If there’s a restaurant you'd like me to introduce, let me know in the comments! Please like and subscribe to my channel, too! Well, that's it for today! See you in the next video!
