nobody is born knowing how to sing michael jackson sam smith beyonce adele they all learn to sing over years and years of practice but how do you know if you're meant to be a singer even if you've never tried i'll show you let's go i run into students all the time that are convinced that they will never be a great singer and this frustrates me to no end because i firmly believe that anybody can learn how to sing i mean with any other skill people understand that years and years of practice and skill have to go into it to develop it tiger woods wasn't born a golfer and ed sheeran wasn't born a singer they learned over years of practice just check out this quick clip of ed sheeran singing when he was younger when people say artists are born with talent you're not you have to you have to really learn and really practice this is me playing guitar and singing i'm going to put it into my mic like this [Music] i mean he's off pitch his voice is cracky and strainy and now look where he is no matter who you look at even the most talented singers learned over years of practice but at the same time almost any singer you can name received the right training guidance and encouragement along the way so what are some ways that you can tell if you actually have what it takes to become a singer or at least give singing a real shot today i want to tell you three quick stories from my own life which gave me clues that i would eventually become a singer see if any of them resonate with you and give you the encouragement that you need in order to give this a real try and become the singer you're meant to be okay i'm 15 years old i'm living in cincinnati on the kentucky side of the border and i am just a total nerd in high school my best friend brian carruthers is the drummer in all the punk bands in our neighborhood so because i'm obsessed with music and playing guitar and punk music i pretty much follow him around to doing whatever he's doing hanging out in his basement watching other people rehearse just always dreaming that i could actually step in one day well one day brian's in the screamo band and he knocks on my door and tells me hey you know our singer for the span that i'm playing in can't play this gig that we booked is there any way that you could do it now keep in mind i had no idea how to sing but i learned kind of how to scream sing intuitively so of course i said yes we practiced insanely hard every day and for me i mean i was totally overwhelmed with memorizing lyrics learning new songs and trying to learn how to not destroy my voice i was screaming for hours on end and honestly it's really lucky i didn't permanently hurt myself but as we got closer to the performance date the show actually got cancelled and so we never ended up performing live but still the encouragement meant a lot to me even him just knocking on my door and asking me whether i would do it was just a huge feather in my cap now i still had no idea how to sing i was basically just imitating all my favorite artists the used strike anywhere rise against but it was my first experience with abandon i was totally hooked and this was so important because no matter what else happened in high school i knew that i had the secret talent that some people wanted has anyone ever come to you and even in a moment of desperation asked you to come and sing for them sometimes fate reaches out its hand and gives you an opportunity to do something that until then you didn't even think was possible be open to these opportunities sometimes all it takes is one performance six years later i'm 21 and i've just quit my career in advertising to go back to singing and songwriting again and i actually quit because i realized that if i was going to work so hard for something it was going to be for myself and not someone else so for the first time in my life i started writing songs for real and i started singing and playing every single day and pretty early on i started playing in the local train stations in san francisco it's the bart train stations i did these performances because i wanted to kill my fear of performing on stage in my songs my singing it was awful people would throw stuff at you and yell stuff like get a job but one day these two guys were passing me by and they slowed down and they said how great i sounded one of the guys got really quiet really serious and told me that one day a black limo would be passing me by as i was performing and it would slow down and inside there would be a record label manager and he would sign me to a big fat recording contract the guy who's telling me this looks super weird and is behaving really strangely but i appreciated what he said to me someone thought i was talented enough to be on a major label unfortunately my music career in san francisco was going nowhere i mean i still really had no idea how to sing and every day that i would perform in the train stations my voice would get sore and hoarse after just an hour i just knew i had more work to do so i started taking singing lessons for the first time and i eventually moved from san francisco to austin a true music city have you put yourself in a situation where you wanted to perform or sing in public even though it was very very likely or quite possible that you would be embarrassed well sometimes you do these performances and instead of getting embarrassed people actually compliment you or like what you're doing sometimes other people can see something that you can't even see in yourself and that's the fuel that keeps you going the next big singing moment comes just two years after i've moved from san francisco to austin i've been taking lessons for a good couple of years now and i'm still not really seeing the progress that i want then in the middle of one of our lessons my teacher gene tells me that i should start performing live again but i kind of wave it off i'm like dude i have so much work to do and that's when he says it he says you could be the lead singer for somebody there's so many bands in austin i mean at first i kind of took that as like a little bit of a dis like hey man you're pretty bad but you could probably be up front for somebody but after a little bit i kind of let that insecurity go and i let the compliment sink in prior to this i had zero confidence and from hearing gene's other singers while i was sitting in the waiting room i knew that i was never gonna become a singer but with jean's encouragement i decided to keep starting more bands because i knew i had to put into practice what i was learning in the studio if i ever wanted to become a real singer many of my students stay in the practice room for years and endlessly self-critique themselves and while it is truly terrifying you really do have to perform in order to learn how to put what you're learning in the studio into practice have you ever had a singing expert you know someone whose opinion really matters to you tell you that you have what it takes to become a singer it's amazing how little confidence we have in ourselves sometimes but occasionally hearing it from another person is all that it takes and an expert tells you hey man you're on the right track the main difference between the people that dream about being a better singer and the ones that actually do it is this finding encouragement at the right times it's this encouragement that keeps you practicing and keeps you working and improving your voice even if you don't have faith in yourself and the more practice and experiences you have the more you'll get the feedback that you're on the right track and so on and so on now you've heard my stories what about yours when was the time that you knew you had what it takes to become a singer and if you're not sure yet that's totally fine but tell me what is something that you can do today to start getting that experience share your story in the comments below
