Fitz thank you very much if the Huskies lose this game it'll be their first losing season since Don James was the head coach in 1970 physical on with Tom Ramsey the biggest story Matt Kegel starting quarterback for Washington State he did not reinjure his right shoulder talked with the Washington State coaches about that but they said he simply couldn't get down the ball down the field so they go with Josh Walker well and Josh Walker came in last week against Arizona State Steve 14 to 20 over 200 yards game a real shot in the arm and he did just that in the last minute in the first quarter in the first half he really sparked Washington State down the field he got 50 yards passing which is what hiegel had prior to that so each team around a hundred fifty yards total offense the turnovers have been a difference so far in the game Washington has had some problems early on and of course Pickett getting intercepted going into the end zone trying to get the ball to Reggie Williams and Reggie Williams right now we don't have a we don't have a report on him just yet hoping toad soon well Reggie Williams has come back to the football field and is on the sidelines there is Josh Walker who likely will get the opening call for Washington State in the second half Washington State will be receiving they won the coin toss to start the game and defer their decision to the second half so Washington will be kicking off down by six points and needing their defense to hold they're doing a much better job than they showed last week when they allowed 54 points and seven football team it is Washington State out past the 20-yard line here's the key injury to Reggie Williams that that we saw at the close of the first half he left the game and Cody Pickett would go to his secondary target Charles Frederick for their first and only touchdown Williams went to the locker room but has come out for the second half and you can see where he is testing that left knee he's a Dale don't limp and if he's available Steve a big plus for the Huskies Josh swagger is the quarterback the 65 240 conredge from Vienna Ohio laid at Youngstown Ursuline high school and he hands off to challenge me to take [Applause] but not so boy Steve with his second fumble recovery tonight Terry Johnson grabbed the whole of the facemask then the ball comes out hope boy right there when the second bubble recovery but what after opportunistic kumamon the Huskies this time it was Washington State all in the first half cause of bubbles get the short field now the Huskies defense steps up and gives their offense a grand opportunity Reggie Williams top of the screen Cody picking to go right side the front Ricky at his office fingertips out of bounds second and 10 so Smith with the turnover and we have seen that ton of turnovers early in this game Washington State forced five husky turnovers in the first half but there's Reggie Williams a key part of the offense hope boy trying to give Washington a chance to claim their first lead in the game good news for the dogs Williams great wide receiver speedster not have a lot of bounce in that giddyup does he he may have enough bounce he's in the slot and he is in single coverage blitz is on picket fires incomplete intended for Cory Williams the true freshman from Las Vegas Nevada Jason David was in the area and the little anger coming from the Washington wide receiving coaching staff Bobby Kennedy who is their wide receiver coach Williams was a star in Las Vegas high school 64 catches for over a thousand yards last year ten and you bet he'll see a cougar blitz [Applause] derman comes from the right side pickin throws underneath and right there was Don checks in the middle linebacker incomplete fourth down and a field goal try now Donnie Jackson really has played well in at that middle linebacker position Steve he's really besides will dirty probably the most important player on the field Baker's lace and here is Evan Knudsen you see four of his seven misses were blocked so he has been accurate but the interior has not been able to hold out the opponents Knutson from 40 he was throwing for Adam Siri his fullback and Siri would have had first down the Running Room Gilbertson taking a chance and it looked like he would pay off but it comes up empty-handed set up watch Siri comes underneath and tries to get outside though the kicker Knudsen lay in a blog and the ball was underthrown Steve the ball the ball was underthrown Pinkett just didn't get the ball out handy heady throwing it to him he would have had an opportunity because they had it was a great play call they just didn't execute swagger and swagger throws it to Smith and Smith this hit knocked down by Marquis Cooper there is Jonathan Smith the top running back this year came in with over 700 yards swagger getting the call over Kegel in the second half Josh is thrown for over 400 yards passing this year closing as he did 452 post and I think you got to find ways to get Jonathan Smith the ball Steve he didn't wasn't real effective running the ball in the first half he only had 13 total yards on six carries [Applause] left side when he gets it out in the hall right and he completes the pass to Sammy Moore who's had only five catches in his last six games Sammy boy it's been kind of quiet that Josh Walker you said the ball comes out big guy he is Sammy more 20 catches Washington State has six players six wide receivers with 20 cancers aboard they've really spread it out well swagger so far on the day five of seven 63 yards I just I just like the way he gets it out and the timing Smith [Applause] Ste territory 27 yards on the longest run of the night moment I'm Steve I think the team that can run the ball effectively in the second half [Music] washing the seat didn't do a good job running the football in the first half they only got seven first downs Jonathan Smith though right there taking the toss and getting some nice lead blocking Smith had a great game two weeks ago against UCLA carried the football 36 times and also caught four passes for 85 yards so over 200 yards offensively play-action swagger rips it downfield complete to the 22 to Benham and his tight end even when they're dropping back and throwing they got a little play-action going they're doing some things underneath where the receivers there's no long you know it's all quick rhythm passing you're not going to take a sack right now and especially Washington State they're quick offense it's just like a running game Steve the three step offense three-step drop back offense works off well Lundy in the slot now there's the three step drop he throws incomplete for Scott Lundy but swagger took about 50% of the snaps in Wednesday's practice Kegel took the others but as Mike Levin settlor told us it was more handoff and hitches by Kegel but he said we needed Matt to throw about 70 to 80% of the stick the snaps on Thursday swagger though took almost all the snaps before last week's win over Arizona State and there is Matt Kegel again man he has a second degree sprain on his right throwing shoulder what is it fifth sixth degree you've got to do surgery Mary Smith to the 15 [Applause] nineteen yard run for Jonathan Smith first and goal for the Cougars boy Calvin Armstrong Steve big number 67 out in front Lundy the wide receiver out in front as well getting nice blocks out on the perimeter and then Jonathan Smith just hitting the hole full speed and leave him in with it they seemed to have really been energized by swagger late in the first half and then starting off third quarter swagger over the middle of ball is tipped in the air and had Rock Alexander just turned around the ball would have rested right in his arms but it was on his backside intended for Sammy more incomplete second and goal from the four Sammy more leads Washington State and all-purpose yards per game Steve 125 yards a game kickoff returns punt returns and receptions second goal for the Cougars the way Smith has been running the ball let's see if he gets it here and he is cut down there by Kevin Benjamin the strong safety Benjamin playing one of his better games Smith with a gain of 1 and Jonathan now has 61 yards on 10 carries build Oba trying to get that ball in the end zone and provide a 13 point lead which would be their biggest of the evening Washington right side and de Voort is in single coverage he's six three against a 510 defensive back [Applause] his fingertips out-of-bounds and complete fourth and goal with swagger noticed it right away big receiver on smaller DB just a little bit too tall had a chance eight ball just took him out of balance Steve and you know again it's that throw it to the back of the end zone but don't take the receiver out of bounds you just throw it up high enough where he has a chance to catch it we saw Mike Williams do that today quite successfully against UCLA and the Trojans win over the Bruins dunning just pumps it through and he has been magnificent not only in this game three for three but this entire season [Music] to beat them three [Music] Alexander passed the 35-yard line a fine return by the senior from Colorado Springs look like Alexander almost had a little break there the Nissan scoring drive Steve WSU a nice drive 10 play 72 yards Josh Swagger leading the way and Jonathan Smith getting a couple big runs on the drive and it was really the offensive line opening the holes that time for WSU dirting and Don Jackson there is Josh Swagger he has come on to replace Matt Kegel and twice he is led his team on drives on his two possessions a field goal with just 35 seconds remaining before the half an excellently executed Drive and then he took his team 72 yards he's taking over from Matt Kegel the senior who is thrown for over twenty-eight hundred yards this year but out because of the right shoulder problem that his costume really the last three weeks pick it on second and five [Applause] a setback [Applause] [Music] [Applause] they've been stymied several times trying to run the football Steve although they didn't get it he's a gain on first down in the first half they were really hampered by long yardage situations on third down I thought it really affected their third down conversion production right now third and five WSU of course coming into the ballgame number one ranked in the pac-10 and third down conversion defense washington comes in clicking about 41% on third down they're only 4 of 11 today ticket looks over to williams who's covered by Jason David a lobster Williams David much Charles Frederick excuse me but it was Jason David who delivered a vicious blow Jason David really got up underneath Charles Frederick Steve watch him break on the ball he'll break on the ball and then BAM its shoulder toss a great tackle Jason David one of the top corners in the pac-10 likely to be a high draft pick come springtime see if they've got to run within i-formation it will be the option to Kenny change close to another first down well they found something Steve in the first half that allows them Dan Cozzetto the offensive coach gets taken down here at the end of the play James when he goes out of bounds eight foot that's Dan Cozzetto take down Donnie Jackson boy just blew him up two Huskies down two bowling pins Cozzetto bounced back up though he showed his resiliency which Steve they found something option does work against the fast Washington State defensive team misses a team that has not run the football recently they only averaged one yard for carry last week against California 34 yards rushing by Washington on 33 carries C Washington State that time the gang tackle and then when they had to be honest up with a stood him up Steve they started ripping at the ball they're trying to get the turnover we'll dirty 51 Donnie Jackson 52 the top two tacklers that defensive unit it helps for second and three to open up plays for this man Reggie Williams he's in the slot right side Williams he gets a block retching inside the 30 that was almost a lateral [Applause] let's see how they rule it apparently it was a backward pass so this will be a rush for Reggie Williams [Applause] the boss completed [Music] that's what Mitch Reinhart Arte who told me and he is a direct connection with the official scorekeeper I'm glad someone is and our official scorekeeper right next to us is Jeff Chapman by outstanding stats man all year long in the pac-10 conference Cody picket beautiful drive play-action pass eludes the sack and has cut down after a two yard run but there will be a flag down and it likely will be holding will dirt in can run man he's fun to watch number 51 Steve he can run he makes plays all over the field their top blitzing linebacker on the offense 10-yard penalty previous spot first down so pushes Washington back see if we could see the hold here play-action nice yeah I'd say I'd say that's a pretty good takedown Nick Newton kind of had a big pork chop arm around DD Romano not salon who's been disruptive the whole time in the first half against the Huskies and yet only six penalties in the game three for each team now pretty clean game 16 to 7 Washington State leading 22 and a half minutes remaining in this Apple Cup meeting number 96 [Applause] dirty' he is some kind of player will dirting who only wanted to become a cougar I mean when you've got three uncle's three aunts four cousins all going to Washington State you know where your head Okanogan the Washington family owns a cattle ranch he's a grand champion befitting and showing at the County Fair two straight years he got the blue ribbon and now he's gotten blue ribbons from build Oba because of his excellent defensive play as a linebacker he's had two games this year with three sacks [Applause] and he would have gotten about ten more yards and he finally got more than that Stevie put a little move on will dirty and dirty miss Tuiasosopo to Isis opal just running watch he's gonna run just a little slant underneath then watch 51 dirty will miss him at boy hit - hee-haw Soquel hell on the ball he might still be running well the important thing was on second and 18 it looked like picket him he Gilbertson were trying for field goal position just get the ball in the mid of the field and give them a better chance now it's third and 18 and check the Blitz coming from Washington State yes - linebackers come by Solano third set by the Cougars and all about number 17 every time Steve and the top sack master for the Cougars watching he's going to work against a tight end now gets by then he's just a straight line guy beating the tackle again beat two guys that time beat the tide in and the tackle he might catch Dwayne Patterson today boy I just think he's so nimble off the edge great feet we've had problems patna ball today too Erikson again a line drive kick very poor [Music] 40 yard line this can't happen Rams Washington's trying to come back on Washington State and Garth Erickson has to give his team a chance they should have that football inside the 20-yard line although there is a flag down was there a hold on Washington State's return I think the whole is going to go against the Huskies a penalty will be declined Steve as you said net punting net punting of four yards hurts don't you have work to do the mortgage there I'm done at the mortgage application with 80% less paperwork from Bank of America hi GI Joes we don't sell action figures Pickett has led his Huskies to one touchdown but they still are nine points behind the Washington State Cougars in the 96th Apple Cup a fine return by Sammy more than five yo decline by 30 hope oi did not bite but nice oh boy nice hope boy having a nice game Steve interior defensive end comes in not fooled they tried to get a flea-flicker and Washington was Blitzen Devin Benjamin came on the Blitz as well 27 see him come in he's right there with hope boy putting the pressure on swagger bringing him down but you got like the PEC Washington state trying to get the ball down the field second showing flex from the middle here swagger throws right side darling is there for about a five yard catch well let's go back to Apple cup 1997 it's the last time Washington State won Ryan Leaf was the quarterback his receiver was Chris Jackson marvelous or Jackson [Applause] first century great guy I'm filled OVA always watched a pet Mike price of the back [Applause] guys he's quite with my Prescott [Applause] Steve the Phil snow defense three blitzes in a row watch Gap all of a sudden a lot of pressure on swagger throws an errant ball Evan Benjamin right there to make the pick second interception of the night by Evan Benjamin when Benjamin has given Washington a chance to get right back in this game with this interception his second of the game now Cody Pickett from the 40 runs the screen throws it over the head of Shelton Sampson and it's the rare appearance we have seen from Samson let's keep Gilbertson has mainly gone with James at tailback so Steve the guy that made the play Tim Galloway the inside linebacker puts pressure on swagger Evan Benjamin there to make the pig and you know what that's just that's good defense good execution good blitz coverage and swagger just not seen it not read my mom used to say you can't get right things from wrong decisions that was a wrong decision from the 39 second and 10 with Sean to state [Applause] single coverage Washington state coming back showing blitz team but did you see what Cody Pinkett did he held his cadence at the line of scrimmage and then they're able to gap protect so they closed everything down no chance of a sack pay him a pushing Reggie Williams flag comes a hasn't beat right here hasn't beat and payment not getting his head around Williams doing a nice job drawing the flag Heyman's the bigger corner out of the two he and Jason David David only goes about five eight payment goes about 6 foot 200 pounds rob a key talking to Bill Toba like that read by picket yeah I just like what you did to line of scrimmage I like to be held him and then got his lines set and they were able to gap protect and not take a sack get the ball down the field [Applause] that's a seasoned quarterback defensive play by time [Applause] 318 pounds senior from Monterey California Steve Samson's not running hard and you know right now he's running tentative tentatively into a real tenacious defense and just maybe when you hit the hole you got to hit it 100 miles an hour to PI e goes 320 pounds and Washington's best run game has been on the option with either Pickett keeping the football or pitching it out to Kenny James Gilbertson now facing a second and 11 of Washington Enfield [Applause] in credit is tied up by Carl payment as the past too tall and now on third and 11 we'll probably see more pressure than just for Washington State Cougars third and 11 Steve and you know you got a pick you got to pick up a big you got to pick up maybe not even a first down here you got to get three points out of this drive but you need a some one significant gain here you need to gain a five or six do you throw something underneath the tuiasosopo he might consider it as an outlet in the second half for six yards [Applause] [Music] I was just thinking you've got to get the points [Applause] turn over with the interception but a bad mistake by a senior Cody Pinkett and a great play by the senior Eric Coleman playing centerfield and look at Pickett stay alive Steve I tell you he does such a great job you know keeping things going but then just at the end to make that throw and to burn up this series of downs when you had a golden opportunity hit in the red zone I mean that hurts and that's what the senior quarterback look at the amount of turnovers for the game - today so Washington has given the Huskies plenty of opportunities but this is not like Cody Pinkett he has thrown so many interceptions he's 1 for 9 in the second half with an interception as toothpicks in the day and both were bad decisions I mean the old Swamp Fox Francis Baron in the American Revolution I love the quote he who fights and runs away lives to fight another day you've got to take the points did you get through you're within the touchdown taking the line [Applause] to defend this delusion you got to stay on the attack take the points you got to stay on the attack well you just can't make mistakes like that especially with the opportunity third down and nine we had that virtual question earlier what is the best rivalry in the pac-10 conference in 54% of her audience say it's UCLA and USC the game the Tom Ramsey used to star in Washington Washington State second best at 20% than Oregon Oregon State [Applause] at the 10-yard line it will be fourth down and a punting situation big hold that time by the Husky defense Steve foreseen Washington state into a punt situation but Basler has been awfully good hunting this year Steve he's driven the ball with a great defense and a strong punter you could you could gain back some field position he's number two in the conference behind Tom Malone from USC funny how good punting and defense goes together slurred gets it off this time we'll take it [Applause] college football presented by Kyocera returns to Fox Sports Net Romney with a college football special when Arizona battles Arizona State in a pac-10 shoda within state bragging rights on the line college football returns Friday beginning with the kickoff show at 2:30 Eastern 11:30 Pacific right here on Fox Sports Net check local listings at foxsports.com for the start time in your area first and 10 Washington James to the middle a gain of about 2 maybe 3 yards this game of extreme reports for Washington State they know that Michigan beat Ohio State for the number two team in the BCS TCU lost to Southern Mississippi on Thursday USC beat UCLA today so a greater chance an opportunity for Washington State to get a BCS vulgar [Applause] back at the 46-yard line how many mistakes can an offense make well they get 5 turnovers watch what happens ball gets jarred out Isaac Brown Steve lucky Washington awfully lucky to recover their own fumble that time and pick it doing the heads-up thing but your third 15 again you're in two down territory to get the first you may not want to give it up on a punt with 112 left in the third quarter single coverage on Charles Frederick [Applause] too much pressure now you got a pun if you got a portion of it there you could go for it on fourth down if you had a Ford's fourth and six fourth and five but fourth and 15 you're relegated to punt it away and hopefully you can gain some field position here well their defense has given them several opportunities Washington State is an offense that has scored quite well this year averaging 31 points per game and the Huskies have held them to 16 despite the number of turnovers of the Huskies it happened at the 11 yard line Sammy Moore will make the fair catch 53 seconds remaining the third quarter here is our email from Matthew in Colfax Washington the question is if there was a playoff system in the NCAA what format would you suggest and top branch Ally you are no fan of the BCS so let's go first but hasty leave the current bolt system in place I've been saying this for a couple years now leave it in place take the winners of the four top Bowls right and let them make a 2-week playoff it's three games so you have an undisputed reigning national champs right Matt Matt from Colfax wanted to know what would happen and I believe I've heard it I've heard it suggested several times you take the winners of the Rose a Fiesta the sugar the orange and let them play it off because the teams that are hot at the end of the year Steve a team like USC lat last year they beat Iowa they could have beaten someone else let him go play the Ohio State last year brother pcs met last Sunday and then decided they will not go at the division 1 double a format 16 team playoff but they are trying to improve access to smaller conferences well and the reason I said what I said when teams are playing 12 regular season football games I think that's too many in the regular season Washington's defenses fired up Mehnaz hope oi crushes Chris Brown the running back right there is Jimmy Newell blitzing from his free safety spot as well Washington's defense last couple series playing stellar football Steve they've had they been up and down all year long it's been a rodeo ride sometimes they play good last week they got gas for over 700 yards and you know you're amazed when you put on the tape of last week and you look at tonight's game two different teams entirely [Applause] what [Applause] and get about five yards back cut down by grit Carruthers and outside linebacker but the BCS was created in 1998 by the six most powerful conferences biggest ACC's FCC big 12 Big Ten in the pac-10 we'll talk more about that as this game continues we head to the fourth quarter here in Seattle for the first time since 1997 when Ryan Leaf led them to victory taking over for senior Matt cable [Applause] Scott Lundy for viewers in the northwest stay tuned for the applica postgame show including reaction from both teams and presentation of the governor's trophy now there's one guy who's no he's going to the scholarship removed or what but that's eight degrees outside it is one of those Barney chillin pools Schlag on Washington State I'm just happy I got my little space heater here nice and toasty yeah the Napa game summary 10 turnovers in the game five by each team Dunning has been perfect for Washington State and Cody Pickett in the second half just 1 for 10 this is one of the outstanding quarterbacks in college football but the Cougars have just put pressure on him throughout it's beginning to rain and it was you who convinced me like snow to go back to my room [Applause] [Music] loosen [Applause] by Washington State Derek Johnson leads the Huskies in interceptions deep down with six on the season he's really played well the last few weeks and swagger is careless with the football Steve he whips it down the field and where he got a little lucky at the end of the first half right here a careless throw leads to a big mistake and they do a nice job again hope boy shuts it down from catching the corner then Johnson with the pick and a nice return again giving the Huskies an opportunity with the football the red zone is incomplete one of eleven but that's not pickets fault Steve they're trying to get some simple place underneath little drag there and they got to get a score here you got to get points on the board they started four drives inside the Washington State Territory Goose a nothing and that shows it right there guilty with his head down shaking it not understand and what they're thinking about half the time and again it just boils down to simple execution second and ten [Applause] almost fumbled the ball a Steve James almost fumble the ball he got about halfway through the hole watch they do a nice job they get a ball on jet get a block on Jenna - and they come off freeze up James watch ball almost comes out right there almost the strip weird Virgil Williams was the one that came across and get some nice blocks tuiasosopo gets his man down payment was turned the ball out he's got to take care of the football he's already fumble twice so they have Sampson back in the game Washington state showing boots makes a mistake it wasn't Cody's mistake I think it was the offensive line Washington state showed blitz against even in the veterans signal caller held about the line scrimmage he held about the line of scrimmage take a look Kenny James came off the field a moment ago limping off getting treatment on the sidelines they have one running back that has experience left and that's a redshirt freshman Shelton Sampson who is in the game now they lose him they may go with Zach tuiasosopo at tailback [Applause] line its Corey Williams the true freshman from Las Vegas nice controlled throw that time to Williams by Pickett and again this is where Pickett shines Steve that the controlled passing game you know quick rhythm stuff where you're not going to take a sec babies haven't been able to protect him you know world class song he hasn't got his gun to John Lyon is tight in not done time now they have it and they usually use the tight end quite a bit a lot of injuries at that position this year Joe Toledo of course a starter out [Applause] Samson maybe one yard but again he did not hit the hole hard like Kenny James was firing in there and he won't look at the film Steve and he'll see that he's not hit the hole 100 miles an hour and we play running back at this conference any any big conference across the nation you got a break in a hundred miles an hour Williams comes back in it's Cory Reggie Williams of course we'll stay in the game Corey Williams will go right side [Applause] and Reggie Williams will come left side Reggie in the slot in single coverage [Applause] for Washington [Applause] making the defensive coordinator for Washington State Steve really selling out plenty and that time Washington getting hats on people at the line of scrimmage and let Sean Samson break free picking the senior one's right side Samson [Applause] the offensive line does a nice job they get a CO block right there Tuiasosopo balls his man Steve the lead blog just crushed the corner and Sam's it takes the corner and goes in for six Samson their fastest running back and he sprinted towards the end zone and now the Knudsen will try and close it within two flag Knutson spheal go or extra point is good let's check the flag so Steve maybe what once Samson once he gets going he is fast it's just getting him unwound and getting him busted through the line of scrimmage to get on tract once it gets his wheels under if he's dangerous he went to Clover Park High School in nearby Lakewood Washington and won three straight state 110-meter hurdles championships so yeah he's got plenty of speed we saw him rip through several touchdowns in one game earlier this year yes eight now on the season the extra point is good is Washington right back in it down by two to the number two number eight team in the nation more time and Seattle sold that Husky Stadium a Nissan scoring drive 31 yards sick plays set it by Derek Johnson's interception it was Shelton Samson dancing in from the right side for the touchdown now they freshmen to protect a lead maybe stretching [Applause] 23 yard line tomorrow Fox NFL Sunday begins with America's number one pregame show then the Panthers battle the Cowboys in a showdown between two of the most surprising teams in the bears take on the Broncos in the game with huge implications to playoff chances or other regional action coverage begins at noon eastern nine Pacific the biggest stories are in the NFC and the box Cowboys in the Broncos to the best-run stuffing teams Oh Steve they do and there's a flag down able to stop the run boy it frees up a lot of things defense Tim Galloway doing a nice job for Washington to go watch the lead block by Tuiasosopo Steve he's going to come out and just put his man on the ground crushed then Sampson catches the corner he beats Eric Corbin and you know what the Huskies their crowd right back in the game great block by Tuiasosopo just punishing Sampson hits the corner and we've got ourselves a ballgame keep Gilbertson the said the keys would certainly be emotion are we ready to play [Applause] feel where Benjamin makes the tackle [Applause] awfully nice blocking this time a plate covered to watch Benjamin come up he gets nailed that's a great block on the outside Devorah darling the wide receiver Steve ended up picking up force doing a great job Jonathan Smith hits the hole 100 miles an hour 88 yards now for Jonathan Smith 13 carries its first down for Washington State at their own 48 yards movement right side looked like Cody Boyd or rather Veneman the tight end Jonathan Smith of course Steve the JC transfer out of Pasadena City College [Applause] and remember fans you can email the booth we have an email from Ryan and Ventura California there are some great Heisman candidates out there but how about us C's Matt Leinart and Mike Williams you cannot ask us because both Tom Ramsey and myself for the Heisman Trophy so we can't give an answer but we can tell you some of the guys in the river plan and complete swagger to Sammy more but in the pac-10 conference you have to talk about Matt Leinart and Mike Williams Steve baby minor down touchdown passes this year that liner and when you consider that early in the season they weren't sure if he was the guy and he's proven he's been the guy he's put them on their back and carried him great efficient efficiency by liner and of course Mike Williams one of the top pass catchers in the country just keeps stories a touchdown machine and he's only a sophomore to a 45-yard line Greg Carruthers on the tackle all of a sudden this Washington team which was beaten by Arizona and hammered by California has a look on their face that they have confident that they can win this game a huge series of downs here Steve Washington's played really effective defense here in the second half they've shut down Washington State Washington State see they have become a little conservative but right now they're showing four wideouts [Applause] [Applause] lundi had three purple jerseys around him and it is fourth down and hunting situation for the Cougars well they like trying to get the ball in Lundy because he reads the defense is so well Steven if he has someone over the top he's going to sit it down underneath at that time swagger trying to get the ball into him just misfires Scott Lundy had two big touchdown catches against Oregon State the last touchdown catch he had won the ballgame now Steve this is crucial that Charles Frederick's catched the ball before it hits the ground it says left side and goes out of bounds they keep it away from the dangerous Charles Frederick its 1614 cougars over the Huskies in the Apple Cup Randy Hart spacing that sideline like a caged husky do you believe young man they are playing great football in the second half Washington has been really shutting down the Cougars in the second half [Applause] almost intercepted looked like he didn't have enough on the throw he'd slamming through a pass to John Lyons his tight end well he slipped his his plant foot Steve when he went to throw Cody picket that the field is slick and in he ended up slipping and he didn't get anything on the ball and almost picked off by the Cougars the Apple Cup just isn't it's about good games last year 29:26 and three overtimes anyway about Charles Frederick Jason David a terrific play by Jason David well let's go back two years to 2001 Washington State was ranked ninth in the country [Applause] she was to botch it winning 26:14 the coach was Rick Neuheisel let go in June [Applause] as a team now [Applause] to pull the upset against the Cougars [Applause] it's the middle linebacker Don Jackson huge loss because it's a huge field position swing here Steve taking a big sack like that ball comes out doesn't get the ball from Center down man Donnie Jackson right there puts the hammer on him put some way back inside the tent Erikson he has not hunted that well today and bounces a short one that will be taken by Sammy more [Music] and he'll be tackled near the 46 yard line time out of the field we have eight 43 left here's worth the football at the Huskies 45 Jonathan speck stuff 35 yard line to the 30 well they've run off the left tackle a couple times to nice deep for big gains Calvin Armstrong 67 then Sam light body pulling getting a big block Evan Benjamin there to finally pull down Smith well he just went over a hundred yards rushing in this game he had three long runs one of 27 another of 19 and now this one of 15 yards for a hundred 60 [Applause] right side there's Benjamin Benjamin has to have at least ten tackles in the game he has two interceptions and he has to be the defensive star for Washington tonight he's one of a manaso coy Evan Benjamin playing as well as any game they've played this season Steve but right now the offensive line of Washington State really really started to take control up front the two tackles Lightbody and Armstrong kind of pave the way [Applause] those over six feet eight inches tall 310 pounds there is a flag down on the play Josh swagger taking over for Matt Kegel who was not taken up because of injury infraction on the there is build oboe a win by doba in the Apple Cup would give the Cougars a third consecutive ten win season I mean Rams Ohio State Michigan Tennessee Georgia Florida and Nebraska can't even say that they're 29 and 7 their last three years now good company Miami has the best record at 32 and 3 Oklahoma has the most wins 34 and 4 number six second and 15 did somebody jump with the offensive lie because certainly Jerome Stephens was offsides dead ball offside on the defense by contact good use of capes at time by swagger check out the hard count here hard count [Music] there's a nice job moved his foot to move the motion guide to put money in motion second town for the Cougars big series seven minutes left Steve [Applause] like more sweet darling turned before he caught the football and with his eyes not on the pigskin he drops it third down in ten and I believe mr. swagger is gonna see blitz here the one thing he can't do is turn it over because three points gives you a five-point lead and in this game the way the Fugees defense is playing that might be enough well right now it's about a 48-yarder for drew Dunning and it's long on the years 49 steed so you'd like to pick up something here - in the back [Applause] my eleven seller the offensive court you know you got a good football team when you have third and ten because you could wrap the football and still get a first down and that goes to show you how effective they are at the line of scrimmage again light body seal look at that block puts down the defender Jonathan Smith Steve just driving his legs and getting up field and he gets his shoulders up the field and he hits the hole [Applause] 20 yards most of those big yards in the second [Applause] Steve the footwork of the offensive line watch Big Sam Lightbody is setting 6-9 320 pounder watch his feet watch his feet he stays up on his feet he doesn't go down drive block and takes his man right out and then Jonathan Smith with great vision able to hit the hole look at that nice job protecting the backside they got a nice running Lane Evan Benjamin again coming up to make the hit for just a few yards too late stop my yard shy of the line of scrimmage so he'll lose one it will be third down into he is working from the middle of the football field and Steve the most important down right here if they stop him hole into three they still got a one score game this play this point this play boils it down right here take a look at Smith's numbers 13 rushes in the 100 second in the second head long he was held to just a two yard in the first half almost nine for carrying the second [Applause] huge stop huge stop by the Huskies Carothers the linebacker Cooper the linebacker were there with an in the next job slanting that time watch the defensive front Steve they end up slanting taking some lanes great Carruthers comes off the edge hit Smith in the backfield and holds on Carothers another one of those guys senior leader captain to the defense [Applause] drew Dunning is 4 for 4 with his fugle tries and he gives Washington state a 5 point 1914 leave well last year we saw Washington come from behind and this field go tied the game to send it to overtime and in three overtimes this was the wild play Kegel drawing to his wide receiver it was ruled by the officials a backward pass a lateral ending the game rather than making at third and 10 call Washington one in three overtimes knocking off the number three team in the nation Rams when I look back at that it's too close to call I'd say incomplete pass well Kai Ellis was the one that made the play the defensive and came through got his arm up Stephen and the play was interesting they ruled a lateral and you thought it was you thought it was I did have the field pass he thought it you don't thought it was just an incomplete I just hate to see officials decide the game and I thought it could be a do-over it's third and ten and you still have enough opportunity to win the game through the Huskies or the Cougars versus do-overs in golf [Applause] Tom Ramsey's the guy who was the star in football check it out that goes that way let's eat my lines but no I was gonna throw up the field where his receiver can go get it they ran that play a couple times through the game look how far the pass goes it only goes two feet how do you call that a lateral didn't have to go it has those two inches will remember the officials did not intend was right away it took about two minutes to make the call well here's Cody Pickett Steve I guarantee he won't throw a lateral how's that he'll throw up down the field after hurting his leg and James's to the 30-yard line there's four and a half minutes left Washington with all their time out Steve four minutes 24 seconds they got to go quite quite a ways here I gotta go 70 with a win today by Washington will keep the Huskies Bowl hopes alive because of the 500 record it would not guarantee Washington a bowl berth they were hurt because Cal beat Stanford today [Applause] is a flag and I think brown is also in steam on the snap of the ball and think AIESEC brown ended up jumping but right now Steve with under four minutes left 84th down count on it that they're going to go for it on fourth then you can't give the ball back to Washington State now offside Mike Brown you see him early take off their had pick it knowing that I don't know if he saw it he probably would have thrown it not taking the sack there wouldn't have hurt to throw the ball down the field so now you got second and two which isn't a bad down to try and chunk it down the field eight penalties for each team [Music] [Applause] up near a first down marker I believe he has it yes he does it is a first step but we've seen Cody Pinkett do this before Washington one of the top come-from-behind teams in years past we saw picket in one of the most beautiful drives executed a few years ago against Arizona State take the Sun take the Huskies now in the last seven minutes he took seven minutes off the clock was it like 18 plays and they would win the game we've had about two turnovers today Steve [Applause] to keep count picked off by [Applause] Benjamin 10:50 for the Huskies couple interceptions ah so coy with a couple fumble recovery his second pick flames were but the good place right [Applause] pick the ball off great job by Mike Wilson in the tape room boy I tell you keep those guys busy 11 turnovers tonight Washington State with six that may be the you know it's interesting Washington State has two games this year that turned the football over seven times in a game and they've won both games they've turned the ball over six that guy wants to for a touchdown Steve you mentioned a moment ago to Cody Pickett is the guy to lead your team to a comeback victory because he's done it before he's comfortable they're patient and they got the players on offense get the ball down [Applause] five yards smart football I'll tell you what Bobby Kennedy is hot he's hot because they ended up tackling the receiver on the sideline Charles Frederick got tackled and then they sat on it I mean it's a hole no essentially it's a hole wash it in with two timeouts okay so hey hey Steve what why not take a shot right here second for 327 I take a shot down the field line I try for the 30 yard game to the Reggie Williams Reggie Williams in the slot they're walking Wilk turning out on him too so he's going to get doubled now we and they run the football for a very short gain probably nothing it'll be third down in four yards to go Josh Shady's on the tackle okay so remember you're not going to give it up on downs third three you're gonna take two shots you can run or pass here now if you bring dirting over against Williams is the only thing that can get him off the play action yeah right now Carl payment a must on here Steve with Williams [Applause] they lost arts yeah now what do you do you have two timeouts left oh I tell you what you don't have a choice you got to throw it just fruit you couldn't run it boy they got knocked off the ball watch Ilan ooh James he's not running as hard as he did earlier and you wonder if his leg is bothering 2 pi e precious seconds rolling off the clock here to Steve fourth and four season on live for Washington here we go fourth and four Williams motion throws underneath first [Applause] you know there's another Cody Pinkett in a phone booth Steve and he about 10 guys and no one gets a hand on him he's able to get the ball off watch the foot footwork and the patience by picking in the pocket he ends up moving up getting hit from behind and throws a little sidearm soft ball nice touch on the ball to Charles Frederick who's coming across a whole formation got a first down two minutes left under two minutes that is cool under fire where it is and it was they burned a lot of time off the clock Steve but you know what most important you see how soft the ball he just kind of just kind of let it a nice touch and that was with a defensive lineman hand on his left shoulder just two minutes I thought it was two minutes two minutes and then watch Fredrick come underneath okay and then watch softball comes out good hands almost busted one there too was a nice tackle by Carl payment nice open field tackle 39 yards the distance [Applause] the second he dives forward near the 32-yard line when he gets out of balance t35 laughs did a nice job hard play to the sideline fans of his left knee with just seconds remaining in the first half and left the game we had a big question mark about of the Brendan played the entire second half but that was only his first catch Hatch's now in the game for 59 yards he is given Washington a second and three situation the Cougar 32 [Applause] John Lyon on the catch Bryan Hall on the tackle first down Huskies a minute and a half to play the scrimmage there on the line of scrimmage no no use of timeouts here they got two remaining they want to conserve the timeout so they get inside back get inside [Applause] six yards to the 21 yard line the prevent defense appears to be on the field for Washington State and it's playing a little soft the second timeout has been burned by the Huskies they have one remaining with one left Kyocera smartphone call of the day how about picket to Charles Frederick Forsyth that wasn't not only a smart phone call in a day it was just the smart play of the day Cody Pinkett nice little touch underneath there Charles Frederick therefore the biggest first down of the season for them then right now Steve lined up at the 21 yard line u-dub with 50 fourth-quarter comeback wins on last five years didn't have a knee this year but remember the last two years had come into the Apple Cup as the underdogs they've unseated a very highly ranked Washington State team both of those years last year they were down ten with four and a half to go and climb back to beat Washington State bill dov'รจ was the defensive coordinator again now this is a huge weekend for both Washington State and the entire pac-10 conference USC won their game Washington State if they win the Trojans if they beat Oregon State should play for the national championship and Washington State should go to the Rose Bowl first things first and 1:15 left with a five-point cougar Lee [Applause] Vegas Steve a lot happened on the play they pump fake to Reggie Williams and then it's cory williams with an absolute spectacular catch and Cody pick it with the throw of the day that was his fifth catch all year long Steve I'm gonna hear a lot more from Cory Williams that was an absolute just a huge throw and a huge drive Cody Pinkett boy leading the way they went the distance great quarterback ain't Washington taking a final timeout we were willing to go for two points look at Gilby he he hasn't changed the expression Steve but spicket humping pump fake early hole to defense and then he just unleashes a bullet that's just a great catch it's a great catch of a hot ball I'll tell you if your Washington State you have to believe that you have one minute and ten seconds left for viewers in the northwest stay tuned for the Apple Cup postgame show including reaction from both teams and presentation of the governors trophy 22:19 Washington an awfully big two-point conversion because if they don't get it then withdrew Dunning you've got a chance to march right down and win it and this is dangerous you know you go for two points here okay you're trying to link in your lead to three points but if you foul up end zone it's 2219 the Cougars with a great field goal kicker Andrew Dunning 110 left a lot of time they must do it without their senior quarterback mat key [Applause] it's a man's down at the 26 yard line 106 to go college football presented by Kyocera returns to Fox with bragging rights on the line beginning with the [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the freshness to the 32 yard line in his Cody boy all three timeouts for Washington State Steve and they're in their spread offense three wives to one side to the other [Applause] over the middle egos Lundy with the catch of first down out past the 38 yard line the first down stops the clock through sculling is the man to win this game his longest istil 49 yards he is 4 for 4 in this game and he is now only missed three field goal attempts he tries 27 for 30 in an exceptional season for drew Dunning he's had a great year he's had an all-american dear Steve and you know if they get in if you get close and I just think you have to get they got to get to the 30-yard line to have to have a real good shot at it and it could be done 38 seconds you need to big chunks right here and you might have to go to Scott Lundy who's really been the hero down the middle of the field all year long for Washington State a great possession receiver a strong route runner great hands and you know another guy - Bart darling I tell you if you run Lundy fast down the middle and you bring in - Bart darling underneath Steve he got a big bodied receiver that you get the ball - he could go up high too [Applause] with his touchdown pass to cory williams he'll watch a redshirt freshman swagger lead the Cougars fires left side incomplete 34 seconds remaining what an exciting game I like I know everyone else likes it too but you know right now swagger Steve really really calm doing the right thing only for completion in his last 14 attempts oh and two INTs oh that's trouble - Bart Darlene the bars darling up top Lundy those are you two playmakers [Applause] call timeout Terry Johnson Jerome Stevens were both there to get Josh swagger 25 seconds left only one timeout remaining for the Cougars dangerous right here you know it's hard to tell but they got a great pass wrench Terry Johnson Steve that time and Jerome Stevens really came hard collapsed the pocket Terry Johnson really made the plate Jerome Stevens and hope boy there to finally put him down and really pushes Washington state into another usage of a timeout Phil snow on the sidelines for the Huskies Doba on the sidelines for WSU let's take a look at the pac-10 standings they're tied at the top USC winning today over UCLA Washington State had a half game lead now they can reclaim the lead by going down the field and giving Gunung a chance Oregon beat Oregon State Cal beat Stanford you see the teams that are on their way towards a bowl right now Washington State wants a PCS goal turned back by the Huskies the last five years with a great second just watch a chance [Music] that's what I call a comeback I call that a comeback and I call that an exclamation point barkis Cooper one of the top players on defense for Phil snows Huskies and Keith Gilbertson steam he's got to be happy now Keith Gilbertson has written written a rollercoaster last few weeks but it's got to be some sweetness in this victory for him well he told his kids it's the Apple Cup it's about emotion this is your season in this game the 96th Apple Cup a senior Kegel started a redshirt freshman Josh Walker [Applause] easier picket from hi-de-ho drove them down the field then the last five minutes of the game and Steve swagger you can't blame him he's trying to make something happen here pressure again Rock Alexander coming off the corner Cooper just jumps in front of the receiver and the Huskies today 21 points off turnovers seven takeaways for the Huskies and a great victory and they may they may have a shot they may end up having a shot at a bowl game now Steve you know you got it you got to be careful here on the kickoff again a couple great return guys by Washington State and just an 8-point liebe Keith Gilbertson he said every day's like a rodeo ride you just get up and hold on yeah it's been tough but he loves this football team he grew up in the Pacific Northwest he grew up coming to Husky games just remember the rodeo ride that a kickoff takes sometimes when a squib you're right [Applause] jonathan smith pitches it and he was a forward lateral with four seconds left three seconds left there is a flag down [Applause] our Kyocera player the game Cody Pinkett brilliant in the fourth quarter seven four eight and he is one of the 19 regular-season game and making their final appearance in Husky Stadium in a rather proud way now what it didn't show he was seven of eight in the fourth quarters even he was one of 11 in the third quarter how does that little change of ports in there [Applause] quite an effort by Cody Pinkett Dan Cozzetto they're wishing him Randy Hart scalpel her keep human see you deserve a teeth it's been a trying year but an excellent coach and a tough man he's bought all the way Washington trying to protect a 2719 lead confusion as they'll go for the Doug Flutie play right near the Hail Mary that's all they have and Washington has defensive backs all the way back to the 30-yard line in the other territory they run it underneath that should be the final play of the game as a flag goes down for the sixth straight year the Washington Huskies have stolen the Apple Cup from the Washington State Cougars [Applause] an incredible game an incredible comeback for the Washington Huskies [Music] 100 years you can add this one to the list of almost was and unbelievable comebacks depending him on what colors you're wearing Washington comes back after trailing 13 to 7 and half time with the major upset over the Cougs 27 to 19 is your final score it is bedlam in the middle of the field at Husky Stadium 75000 spilling over and just the contrast to up the tunnel near the Washington State locker room a 9 and 2 season Falls to 9 and 3 now the Rose Bowl is gone BCS gone and it looks like they're going to San Diego and the Holiday Bowl and if you look at that scene you'd never know that the Huskies are six and six on the year and four and four in the pac-10 because they win the Apple Cup to 96th and that means everything in this part of the country welcome back to the postgame show Jim Watson long with lead Casper he's a kook he can probably figure that out by his face and this guy smiling next to me of course is sunny six killer and as I mentioned a couple of times during our pregame show this is the first time I've experienced an Apple cup up close and I'm telling you i sat here and I could feel the two emotions tearing back and forth his spirits were falling Sonny was jumping up and down and now I started to realize what this what this game means we're getting agree to start with you clay let's talk a little bit about about how disappointing this this game is for the Washington State Cougars I'm 13 to 7 you had many opportunities in the first half in my opinion it should have been a two touchdown advantage at least at the half didn't take advantage of that then kegel goes out of the game it changes everything well it's tough to take going back to that tunnel knowing leak feeling inside that you gave the ball away you gave the game away that they nowhere near played to the potential that they have it's tough you're gonna go in disappointed probably some tears but if there is any consolidation it's that you do get to go to San Diego Holiday Bowl get to spend another month with these guys that you worked so hard with for they long season and for the seniors especially it's going to be a reward and unfortunately they just didn't play like they're capable playing today 7 turnovers the and overcome that there's just no way in the world that you're gonna do that time after time they did it against Oregon State and lucked out with a number of key plays down the stretch and they just couldn't get the ball in the end zone when they needed to too many field goals from the red zone and just tough tough day for the Washington State offense defense just played their ass off all day long but they were out there too long today alright we'll give you a minute to collect your thoughts a little bit meanwhile it must be a pretty good time to be a husky right now in it well you know this team is Jim you and I have just watched him so much and that man right there Cody Pickett fans were calling for his ouster they wanted you know Casey pasta be playing and you know as we said in the beginning of this programming today is that maybe he'd come out and have a big game and really really just forget about the rest of the season I know I was saying a little prayer for him at the end of Cody I have a lot of belief in you I believe in you and those players believe that I'm down them down the line and certainly Cory Williams a freshman receiver with a big grab for the touchdown and and the noise just went crazy I mean look at this I mean these guys are drained I mean they plate your rear ends off today you know barely get out of their seats it's just Jim when you play this game so hard and both teams have it's just amazing that you come out with a victory like that and and you want to celebrate but you're darn tiger you know I want to relay a story to you and to the people at home that that happened just to just a couple of minutes before kickoff all the Huskies left the locker room there too two people left to individual what inside the Huskers locker room and that was Keith Gilbert's in the head coach and Cody Pickett his fifth year at quarterback they had a couple of words and then Gilby turned and hugged Kody Pickett and said I'm proud of you well I saw it a few times on the sidelines as well Jim that he did go to him one on one again when things weren't going so well in the first half and and you have to do that you know quarterback sir man they go up and down and you got to stay with them and stay and keep that confidence level really high and I think that Coach Gilbertson really did that today with Cody Pickett it couldn't happen at a better time yeah let's talk a little bit about Cody and obviously this game is much bigger and much more important than one guy but if there's one guy who absolutely deserved it in not sitting here at least I I'm not you guys are openly but I'm not rooting for one team or the other but of course because I spent the year calling the games for u-dub and I saw what Cody went through and I listened to him get attacked on the radio in this town and in the newspapers and sure some of that is his fault but certainly not as much as he was getting and you have to be happy for that young man he started out the second half he was ice-cold yet he hung in there hung in there and he throws the touchdown pass to Cory Williams well you know we sitting in her papers quotes from him this week that you know I got one credit to go to graduate I don't know if I'll do it here it was that bad and for him to win this game with a touchdown pass a lot of credit to his character which we've all believed in sir and he's just done a great job you see it right there he doesn't want to take the helmet off I don't think he wants to he might work tonight when he goes home for five years and he always I'll tell you what at the press conferences on Monday after a terrible loss he was always a guy who would stand up look at me in the lens of the camera and say hey we're just gonna go back to practice we're gonna work hard and we're gonna try and get better and I don't think anybody believed him towards the end of it but you can see right there that is that as five years of emotion that is just bubbling out right now and and that is a relieved young man and let's point out and Cody Pinkett never lost the Washington State while he was here that is true he's on all those went out six in a row Apple Cup victories a part of five of them anyway but you know again we can't say I'm not enough about his character and and willingness to just compete gym and that's compete is all you can say about this ballgame now in the locker room of course there's a lot of hugs and the u-dub side and knowing well for Washington State it's the other end of the emotional spectrum and here's Pete Gilbertson talking to his guys hey hey hey I want to introduce I want to introduce the governor of the state of Washington you Washington graduate this is going to Gary Locke everybody get big outski welcome to the Huskies and all the fans what an exciting game you gave us today thank you very much are you guys proud to all the seniors to all the seniors we wish you the very best of luck you've learned a lot here at the University of Washington the pond and off the field and we hope that you'll remember the University of Washington and the Huskies all the education everything that you've learned here and that we wish you the very very best of luck in all of your endeavors upon graduation but now we have the the captains come forward seniors come on forward come on forward all right let's have the seniors come forward seniors [Music] [Applause] coach coach to the seniors of the University of Washington Husky football team and to all the Huskies congratulations on being the 2003 Apple Cup champions crowd continues to celebrate out on the field seventy-five thousand but it was mixed and I would say it was probably a 60/40 u-dub crowd in fact I heard a lot of u-dub people were giving away their tickets to Washington State people because they just didn't expect a positive outcome well you should have been here because this is what rivalry games are all about and there's one image that I will remember from this game and that is Keith Gilbertson as the final gun sounded actually smiling I don't think we've seen Keith gilbertson smile like that unless it was a brave smile at the press conferences after games but it was a it was a pure smile there was joy and emotion coming out of that guy and I'll tell you what whether you're a guilty fan or u-dub fan that man has been through an awful lot this year and he certainly deserved a victory didn't he there's no question about it you know taking over the head rains in July just a couple weeks before the two-a-day start and you know culture sorry had to hire another coach to take his place fortunately there's Scott Pulu around that was looking for a job made it a little easier in transition for him but you know Keith Gilbertson local boy everybody wants him to do well but everybody had some doubt as well and Keith the Overtoun as you mentioned raised locally here just just north of the U and he certainly understands what this game means and that's why that smile was reflected on his face let's go now - JD proof's who's standing by with today's winning coach so the media and non team members to please exit the room certainly a grand finale today at Husky Stadium it's been it's been a real roller coaster ride not just for the coaches but players and fans I just felt proud of my guys for hanging in there and believing they could do one more time I know you love good offense tell me about that last Drive you guys went on because certainly probably the best driver of the year well maybe the most meaningful Drive of the year it was real special and thought of key plays big first downs marvelous execution and a great great great play at the end faking the bubble screen and hitting the street grunt not a bad play by a true freshman making that catch in the end zone he's going to be a marvelous player all right keep the overstating this first year finishes up it off with an apple Cup victory alright JD thank you very much welcome back it's Jim Watson with Glee Kasper from Washington State sunny six killer and u-dub grad and of course the guy all the way over here you've been listening to him for the last two and a half hours Carrey and Steve fizzy och this is Tom Rams everybody we appreciate you coming down from the booth to spend some time with us Jim you're probably intimidate with all the quarterbacks around all I can say is there's not an athlete at this table how did you guys see it from upstairs a lot of turnovers it was kind of a sloppy game you know a great ballgame through and through a great Apple Cup I think one for the ages so you know at the end of the day you said it Gill be smiling they've had a rough year he referenced the whole year as a rodeo ride the whole time but I think it boiled down to quarterback play in the end swagger tried to take some chances with the ball and really it hurt them down the field and all of a sudden Cody Pickett comes back they go 70-plus yards they put a great drive together and and the pump fake to Reggie Williams to hold the DB and then get the ball into Corey Williams like you know that's a ball game right there and and I think you know all of us have been there you've tried to move DBS with your eyes and when you could get the ball in a tight place for a big touchdown but no better feeling Tommy you've been calling pac-10 football for a long time and you know what Cody Pickett went through and being a quarterback yourself I think you can understand how satisfying that was that last throw to Corey Williams him to win this game his last game at Husky Stadium regard whether they go to a bowl or not that guy never lost the Washington State what's he going through emotionally right now I think he's going through awful lot because you know this game we sit at the top of our show we ended up saying hey if Cody Pickett gets hot and the combination of the picket two wimps now Reggie Williams got hurt a little bit he didn't play really silent kind of third quarter but you look at Cody Pickett's leadership and even though they had a tough year they couldn't protect him a lot of times I thought he was under fired and even if you get your timing thrown off by a half a second it affects the ball coming out Pickett just was resilient he made the throws when he had to and the fourth down throw to Charles Frederick I mean clutch in the sense that he took something off the ball put a nice spin on it and allowed for the first out and next thing you know he throws a bullet in for a touchdown so give credit where credit is due I know it's a tough loss for Bill Tobin his troops they played great all year long and deserve a lot of credit again and a great outcome Tom Washington State is now 9 and 3 what does this leave them how good are they really you've seen them a couple of times well you know unfortunately it's not gonna put it at the Rose Bowl it looks like and and I think that's kind of a misfortune for the conference but they're gonna go to a good bowl they're gonna enjoy the fruits of the season and you know it's pac-10 football right Keith Gilbertson said it this week and I totally agree with it if you don't bring your A game to every game you got a chance to lose because the opposition is that good well you know your UCLA guy you played in the rivalry games down there but I just realized this we have this table pretty balanced out we got a cougar and husky we got a Bruin and a Trojan I think I didn't get the score Tom Ramsey we appreciate you coming by man thanks Ram travel safe Tom Ramsey avoid to pack 10 football on Fox Sports Net we'll come back to Husky Stadium so much more u-dub it's the Cougs at Washington State 27:19 we're coming right back this special edition of the Northwest Sports report is brought to you by Bridgestone tires advanced technology that gives you a grip on the future back inside Husky Stadium it is emptying emptying up at the parties now I've spilled out into the parking lot if you were in purple and gold it is an amazing night for you down 13 to 7 seemingly added this game your starting quarterback doing nothing on with 4 minutes left he caught magic little lightning in a bottle and drives him 77 yards for the winning touchdown he throws it to a freshman named Corey Williams all year long Keef Gilbertson was looking for that third receiver I think he would like to have found him in week 2 or week number three but he found him at the very end of thing study six killer and cleat Casper joining me I'm Jim Watson let's talk a little bit about Washington State's defense because that's the thing that I will take out of this will dirting and watched him all year long he had some problems at the beginning of the season but he's a fantastic player Jason David Alcala know he had three or four sacks tonight there's some talented players on that cougar side of the ball I think they just got tired they were on the field an awful lot in the second half yeah that many times that you're going to be out on that football field and facing a wide-open offense with some quality receivers you're gonna you know be very lucky to only give up a couple touchdowns I just have to express a lot of appreciation for the seniors on that defense nine of them guys like Eric Coleman the captain Genet own DD at Solano Isaac Brown tied to PI e in the middle along with Jerry Jeremy Williams you know they've had a great season this is gonna be a tough one but they're young they'll bounce back and have a great time down in San Diego hey you know it was funny at halftime when I looked at the stats Sonny is that Washington actually had outgained Washington State and had controlled possession and I think a lot of that actually came from the defense at that Tim Huntley and Phil snow did a great job especially when swagger came in they knew they had a freshman back there so they began to give him different looks they were stunting they were blitzing and they kept the kid off-balance well I think the guys up front were the real big key though you know they've did blitz they did do some stunts but you know they put some pressure from the inside - hopefully it was one tank Johnson we've seen him all year when he gets his game revved up he's pretty potent up there in the front so I bet he brought his a-game today you know I talked to people around the u-dub program about who they thought would be the hero they talked about maybe Cody Pinkett having that game that we've been waiting for all season long they talked about of course Reggie Williams and they mentioned Charles Frederick then some people talked about Kenny James and Shelton Sampson the redshirt freshman in the backfield but no one that I talked to use the name Corey Williams well JD preusse caught up with him he's the hero the 96th apple Cup we're here with Corey Williams we've got the game when he touched up that's Chloe tell me about the blame with a bubble pump my coach he's being good telling me I could do it all time I knew I could do it I just knew the chance that they gave me the chance we're too fresh we've seen you gain more confidence as the seats go along how's this bird finish to the season always great it's a big finish to start you start next season this is what I needed you can get the next season going how does this feel your first Alva Cup victory feels grandpa thinking about it though the whole time I've been wanting to make the big play now look up and he's just like B games I just step up this is what I do alright the freshman from Vegas money tonight Corey Williams by the way I know we didn't super those two guys the guy who was screamin was all excited that isn't the guy who caught the touchdown pass that was our JD improves who seemed to be as excited as Kourt Cory Williams of freshman catch the winning pass in the Alva govern'd he was in more control and JD was alright let's check in back at the studio with with Brad Adam Brad I don't think I've seen JD that excited since payday it happened so rarely around here you're right you know I'd say the lose the Apple Cup last year and still made the Rose Bowl when USC got invited to play in the Orange Bowl now meizu was hoping for the same this year but the Trojans playing for the national title in New Orleans against Oklahoma but this year there will be no Pasadena trip of course they lose yep so but you can't blame the Trojans hosting UCLA tonight Keyshawn Johnson got nothing better to do cutting on the Bugsy's on the sidelines yeah the three-point shooters they want Oklahoma Mike Matt Leinart in San Diego in the Holiday Bowl and now we don't know about the Huskies bowl eligible after today's win six and six hey house Christmas in Vegas sound to you yeah the Las Vegas Bowl is Christmas Day Brad that's a good point and you know something else and we only touched on this briefly during the pregame show it has been 27 years since the University of Washington suffered a losing season on the football field they'll tell you after we left Berkeley I don't think a lot of people thought that they had much chance coming in here and responding but they did and so they finished the season six and six and so that streak continues on why is it significant it's the third longest streak in the country behind Michigan and Nebraska and of course we know both of those programs have winning seasons this year so it looks like at least right now USC beats Oregon State they will go to the Sugar Bowl and it looks like Washington State will now go to the Holiday Bowl that's your game winner right there Cody Pickett capping off a 77 yard drive to the unknown he was a nobody 25 minutes ago and now he's somebody his name is Corey Williams and he's the hero of the 96 Apple cup much more from Husky Stadium coming up on Fox Sports Net including an interview with et Charles Frederick we come back Titian of the Northwest Sports report is brought to you by your Northwest Chevy dealers in by subway eat fresh Beckett Husky Stadium was set in the 96th annual Apple Cup in Washington beats Washington State 27 to 19 but there was a lot going on in the last couple of minutes of this one in fact with four minutes to go it was 1914 Washington State Cody Pickett and the u-dub offense was wait faced with a fourth down and four your first option had to be Reggie Williams your second option was et Charles Frederick and somehow Cody managed to stay alive stay on his feet avoid some rush he got outside the pocket and he threw sidearm to Charles Frederick and Frederick with the big gainer moved the chains kept the drive alive and a couple of minutes later the pass to Corey Williams ended up as your game winner I can't meet sack I caught up with ET win 6 1 straight for the Huskies how sweet is it I don't know to say everybody's so happy everyone is good we knew who's down we knew we had to come back we knew we had to make big plays and when they gave us opportunity we just took it this has been such a breakout here for you is this what you always expected up yourself I'm very happy with myself all I was doing is going I having fun and making big plays for the team to see me win this makes up for it and now we got just work up or harden off Sita and get better for Nixon Thanks Charles Frederick for most of this season has been playing in the shadow of Reggie Williams and everyone wondering is Reggie going to come back as Reggie gonna have a big game what's Reggie think about this what's Reggie think about Reggie Charles Frederick is absolutely opposite of Reggie Williams off the field but on the field these are both superb talents and Charles Frederick we saw him break out against Oregon State that long punt return he set a record for all-purpose yards that's a special player why so quick and you know it banged up now he's healthy you know it's sitting in the stands fans are yelling at him to come up on those putts Charles what are you doing well you know what he Sparkle at the end with that great catch Jim and that was a great job by Cody Pickett that was just the beginning of a great Drive for Cody and Charles Frederick it's one of those drives that will become historic in Washington football lore and one thing that Cougs and Huskies can agree upon after a game like that is I think everybody needs a drink and for that we'll send it down to the Fox Sports Grill and our own Carrie Sayers I have to tell you if you didn't have a ticket to the game the Fox Sports girl was the place to be but it was about 70% Coug fans and I'll tell you what they were so loud no matter what was happening in the game you could hear go Cougs chants above all else that was of course until the Huskies interception return for a touchdown and then I'll tell you what if you would have late you would have missed them the floodgates opened they couldn't get out of here fast enough and I heard one cougar fan say congratulations Huskies you can beat our second string quarterback for the second straight year the Huskies response chances overrated and six of course for six straight wins in gym that sewed him up can you believe it unbelievably out his six straight wins that's that's tough to swallow I'm sure for the folks out in Pullman but Polly Kasper continues to to stay brave with us right now you know what one group that has been much maligned all this year on Montlake of course is the washington defense and about halfway through the season if you talked to Keith Gilbertson he would tell you we have to get better in the red zone defensively well one guy who was there consistently all year long and I'm talking about on the field and then talking to the media afterwards and kept defending this group was the captain Greg Carruthers and JD proofs caught up with him here with Greg Carruthers the senior co-captain great guy seen in good games lately yeah we just played him one actually that was a big game for us you know like I said we've been saying all year it hasn't been going right for us hasn't been going the way that we wanted it but that's obviously a big win for us I know you're a vocal leader on this team in the locker room down at halftime what did you say to your team we were in it I mean we didn't have much to say we're more focused we were just in it we knew we were in it we knew that we had to play it out so your last game is the Husky what does it mean to go out beating the Cougars the way you did that's sad sad time but you know it's it's big for us you know so emotional ups and downs I mean he fell down because you're never going to do it again but that's the way to finish all right good Crothers finishes his career and off to celebrate with his teammates in the locker room as the Huskies knock off the Cougars it was off to celebrate it wasn't him waiting for JD to finish never walk into JD's shot that's very very important Greg Carruthers mentioning what a bittersweet ending it is because as happy as he is about beating the yeah the Cougars in the Apple Cup in his last game it is his last game he'll never again wear the purple and gold unless they don't have an alumni game do they Sonny let's check in one more time with Brad Adam a very busy day in college football Brad know about this get interest around college football we've had Super Saturday showdown Saturday this is rivalry week that's all you need to say just ask Oregon and Oregon story in 265 straight games the 2p 2/3 audience all times forth they store enough Street real estate today streets are made to be broken unfortunately not for the foots in the alphabet that is now six straight losses as the Huskies come back thanks to the touchdown pass from Corey Williams we have much more coming up on our Apple Cup postgame we've got more from the Husky Stadium got most the Fox girl and more from here keep it right there Fox Sports Net Huskies big over the coupe with the literally thousands of people that watch these two programs play football only these two men can share that moment and know exactly what it means they both been through an awful lot G Gilbertson taking over or neuheisel Mike price leaves Pullman and Bill Doba all of a sudden becomes a household name in the pac-10 they share a moment at midfield after this one it had to be tough for Bill dov'รจ the trip back to Pullman will not be a pleasant one but they are going to the post season it looks like Washington State will head to the Holiday Bowl in San Diego and for Washington we're not sure there's six and six but they are eligible now for the Las Vegas Bowl so maybe there is a second season for the Huskies as well all year long we've been talking about the offensive line during games and that they just haven't been doing their job at least up to par Dan Cozzetto came in as the new offensive line coach and one of the guys he leaned on all year long was Khalif barnes he was with JD prunes just moments ago all right perhaps the mouthpiece of the offensive life lead Barnes it's been a crazy season but certainly a dramatic finish here at the optica yeah it's been rode remote and then we went through a lot of things that could have brought this pin down kind of put us away in phases for good but I think this team's heart saw the law you know came off a devastating devastating loss to Carroll and Arizona brief after that and to come out here and put on the show like that in our home Carroll I guess the very good Washington State team their defenses it's great and the office can do the ball on you it's just it's just ecstatic Matt rare for this month and it's just great I'm happy for the seniors you know they get to go out one last time I get one more year but I'm happy for these guys and you know being a six and six and and beating the Cougars you know this gives you a little bit of a better feeling but I just feel good all right thanks for all your time this year Cleve Barnes goes out the finishes up his junior year with a victory in the alphabet cliff Barnes is sunny six killer joins me once again Cleve Barnes in this offensive line they took a lot a lot of hits this year because they were lettin Cody Pickett take a lot of hits boy I'd say the whole season Dan Cozzetto comes in and still some toughness and springball gym and tries to build that traditional thing again with the husky line men and took some time and they handed up with some injuries they had to move guys around to see Sal hasn't played the last couple games Robin meadow was out early so you have all this plan coming in with these great linemen all of a sudden you got it you know it's like you're playing chess where I moved in the guy next and for them to come out with a big victory and having a guy like Khalif Barnes I think back for another year is gonna really be good for Dan Cozzetto in that offensive line for next year you know my grandfather used to say in the in the game of life the winners laugh and tell jokes while the losers say shut up and deal there is another side to this whole story while we're talking about the Huskies and getting sound from their locker room a bunch of jubilant players have smiles on their face and a lot of relief the other side of the stories in the Washington State locker room that's where a chemita K is for us Jeremy Williams a senior you never won an Apple Cup does that make this one harder to swallow a little bit you know it's hard because you know you can't have that opportunity next year but you know we didn't get the job done today and you know they played a great football when they had to you know it's an empty feeling right now but you know we're bounce back and be ready for the ballgame the bright spot and this is you guys have more football left yeah that's true you know we get to go down to a ball game and you know spend one last time as a team you know as seniors and everything else and I think that's the most important thing is to you know make it to postseason play and have something to really be proud what happened on that last drive when they got the go-ahead touchdown they may plays when they had to you know I think we helped mount the beginning with the penalty you know that kept them going a little bit but you know Pickett he found the open receivers and somehow he squeezed that ball into Reggie you know they made a gutsy performance when they has to all right Jeremy Williams thank you a four-time All Academic pac-10 member and that is certainly something to be very proud of kami thank you very much in cleat Casper's back with us we talked about it a couple of times well we talked about it all week and we talked about it during the pregame show and that this is the most decorated group ever to come through a Pullman Washington State Cougars and and yet they didn't beat the Huskies and I asked you before well it tarnished their legacy and and I think earlier you said it probably would a little bit what are your thoughts now that it's actually come come to fruition it's happened it's still hurting yeah and these guys are you know a class act guys like Jeremy Williams not only are their excellent student athletes but they have a legacy that's going to be hard to surpass they're gonna have a great time down in San Diego celebrating it and at the beginning of the year pick number seven in the pac-10 fought hard through this football game just came up on the wrong end so they'll have a good time down in San Diego and celebrate some more we've all been around college sports a long time and the one thing that I've learned about this this game especially college football is that these guys these are young men and even though that they've lost and they're very disappointed right now you watch they'll shake this off pretty quickly they'll set their sights down the road all the way down the road Southern California the Holiday Bowl in San Diego we'll come back to Husky Stadium as her postgame show continues on Fox Sports Net he's been watching the 96th Apple Cup Washington beats Washington State 20 SEPs MasterCard and Visa at most restaurants now the scoreboard continues to be illuminated but not many people here to see it anymore Husky Stadium has emptied out those of those cougar fans have started to head home and and go off wherever you go after one of these things and the Husky fans continue to celebrate in the parking lot one other thing and I know this is important in this part of the country Washington not only wins the Apple Cup but they also win the Northwest championship remember they beat the Beavers in Corvallis they pounded the Ducks right here and now they get the Cougars so they're three and O in the northwest we continue to collect sound we go back into the u-dub locker room JD preusse all right with Terry Johnson the senior from Arizona and Terry obviously you've been through a very frustrating season what does it mean to actually finish this one off with a dramatic win like you did today it means a lot you know because the character of our team and our seniors that you know we fight back and I think that's to evolve Washington is fighting back and whenever you're down you know off the ground and keep going it feels great you've been really vocal about this team throughout the year about people maybe not giving a hundred percent effort outstanding I think there you know a lot of guys you know we went out there and we just put it to him and I think that it was important for us to do that you know to hold up the whole night it was a battle the defenses and we was great a winner beating the Cougs in the Apple Cup Terry Johnson with a grin on his face as most of the Huskies have right now Terry Johnson's been unbelievable all year long and I I finally learned why they gave him the nickname tank let's head you back to the studio now Brad Adam get you caught up on a very busy day it started in in Bozeman I think it was like 10 degrees out there Brad 10 degrees and snowing about eight hours ago you know some great football today started with that cat Griz game three things had to happen for Washington State to go to the Rose Bowl USC had to win they did Ohio State had to lose they did Washington State had well we forgot about that right the BCS standings top ten brought to you by Bridgestone our Bridgestone BCS rankings Oklahoma big winner Ohio State they lose to Michigan Michigan goes to the Rose Bowl their first Big Ten title since 2000 everybody should slide up one everybody win except for TCU which should have been in there anyway so this was a golden opportunity Jim I mean he was right there for wazoo who's taking which maybe we'll make this six straight loss in the applica just a little bit harder to swallow tonight the Cougs really controlled their own destiny they knew USC had already won they knew Ohio State already lost all they had to do and I know it's a big if all they had to do was beat the Huskies and cannot get it done tonight so Holiday Bowl bound they are Jim yeah it was the golden opportunity Brad and the well the Cougs just let it slip through their fingers and cleat let's get some final thoughts from you build open now how soon before he starts to rebuild this team because obviously they have another game to play and it's a big one well they're gonna take a little bit of time off have a nice Thanksgiving dinner let the kids go home for the break and then come back get the schooling part out of the way heading down to San Diego get a couple practices let me tell you going down the nice warm weather when you're from Pullman bouncing around the practice field they'll forget things real quickly it won't be so bad when they're laying on the beach in San Diego getting ready for that game well here he is he's been smiling for the last 45 minutes or so and when Cory Williams hit the endzone he was jumping up and down what's a husky always a husky don't lose it Jim what does this do for this program I know they're only six and six you want to keep it in perspective but in these parts they get to walk around their heads up for another year well a lot of bragging rights not only for the team but all the X all the alums all the Big W members the former players everybody because it it means a lot there's a lot of Cougars live in Puget Sound obviously a lot of husky fans so it's a little bragging rights for at least a year next Apple couple we'll see what happens but I tell you what big win for the program help recruiting all those good things that's what the program needs to have happen it certainly wasn't a wasn't a pretty game it was 12 turnovers who are numerous penalties and teams missed opportunities but look at that Wow how about that yeah there's their friends once again at least for another 364 days now Washington State did have their golden opportunity they led this game 13 to 7 at the break they were had 16 to 7 in the third quarter and still led this game which is four minutes to go up and then Cody Pickett took the skis on a magical drive 77 yards three minutes and 33 seconds and they capped it off with a touchdown to Cory Williams this was Shelton Sampson getting the Huskies back into it at 16 to 14 Washington State's defense was on the field an awful lot in the last couple of minutes and this is the one that they will talk about this is the one that Cody Pinkett will tell his grandkids that this entire town was against me that the university wanted my scalp and I found a freshman in the corner of the endzone and he gave me a chance to put my arms in the air one more time as a husky Cody Pickett the fifth year senior from C town Caldwell Idaho celebrates with a much deserved hug he's been a lonely man for a long time and now he's celebrated by his victorious teammates Cody Pickett and the Huskies win it 27 to 19 the flipside just down the hallway sometimes all you can do put your arm around a young man and say we'll get them in San Diego the 96 Apple Cup is in the books thank you very much for joining us congratulations to both programs build open and keep the person you've overcoming off a lot to get to this place good luck to both programs I'm Jim Watson for everyone here at Fox Sports Net thank you for watching Washington beats Washington State the 96 Outlook Cup is in the books raise the trophy [Music]
