good afternoon everybody good afternoon good afternoon thank you for being here hey i learned from the best danny uh thank you all so much for being here um as we um continue the journey through um book of acts if you are streaming anywhere else thanks for taking the time to join us in the middle of the day grab your bible whatever it is you're going to use to take notes with we're going to begin acts chapter 14 today um i hope you all have enjoyed this kind of verse by verse walkthrough of the book of acts um it is it is one of my favorite books of the bible just to to walk through as we journey through what life was like for the early church and hopefully it's not just a history lesson but it becomes something that we seek to embody as the church of the lord jesus today um we're not just walking through acts so that we know what happened in the story we're actually walking through it so that we learn what the lord seeks to do in the local assembly right this this stuff isn't just ancient history it's actually an opportunity to actively participate in the lord's work if we seek to embody that which we see in the scriptures right does that make sense to you i think if we can go back to understanding what this is like church 101 right the very the very basic tenets of the church um we'll start to see that the same sort of momentum as the early church does that make sense to you one of the things that i hope you'll also see is that as we start to gather i mean start to walk through paul's missionary journeys and see what happens in the different local churches that have been established because the gospel spread one of the things that i hope you'll see is there was no such thing as usual church one of the things that you'll discover is there was a no like this is what they do every time you get what i'm saying it wasn't a religious gathering there was constant activity and movement of the holy spirit and the people were just in line with the spirit's movement does that make sense i don't believe usual church a biblical model does that make sense to you yes they prayed yes they studied the word yet but there was there was spirit activity among them and there was nothing that was just usual about their gatherings right and so i think that's important to embody at any rate uh we're in acts chapter 14 um super grateful for pastor dwayne hi in his walk through acts chapter 13 last week the end of acts chapter 13 but one of the things that happened at the end of action 13 is so important because it is a thematic thing i mean that that we we really gotta uh take note of and and it's this what what what happens at the end of acts chapter 13 the paul and barnabas at antioch they're in the city antioch you put out right these jews some of the jews put them out they ran them out all they were guilty of doing was preaching jesus right that's it most of acts chapter 13 is a sermon you hear what i'm saying they preach jesus they're the these these devout jews the ones that that are not converted by the message they put them out right get rid of get rid of them but y'all got to get out of here acts chapter 14 verse number one now what happened in iconium that they went together to the synagogue of the jews and so spoke that a great both of the jews and the greeks leave let's let's pause end of acts chapter 13 they get put out they go to the next city their city city called iconium and what happens they start doing the exact same thing they got them put out of the last place opposition did not stop purpose they were going to talk about jesus everywhere they went no matter if people felt the way about it or not do you see this in the text they would rather hear me they would rather move to a new place then stop talking about jesus now i need to put a pen here because this nuance is actually something i don't think we see enough they decided to move rather than get away from the message so if me and jesus can't be here i don't want to be here at all i'd rather move somewhere where i can talk about jesus stick around in a place where i'd be comfortable by being silent i think too often we compromise our purpose for convenience it would be so much easier to not say anything so i'll just pray silently it'll be so much easier to uh just kind of you know do it quietly than than to live my faith out loud because they don't want to embrace it or accept it so instead of being accepted they moved instead of staying in the relationship because they like that person and that person wouldn't come to church with a would they couldn't talk about jesus there but i'ma stay here because i'm just so in love no they got out instead of hanging with the friends that was always doing the wrong thing i'd rather get out if you can't stand on your convictions you should probably move because the center of god's will is not always a place most times it's your purpose and if i can't walk in purpose here it's the wrong space for me i'm making sense to you verse two and and let me go back and say this too there is fruit from it because what happens at the end of verse one a great multitude of people believe sometimes you staying where you're comfortable is actually keeping you from being in places where you'll be fruitful lord have mercy i got to say that again so nice got to say it twice sometimes staying where you're comfortable will keep you from where you're supposed to be fruitful they moved spoke the same message and got a great response don't allow your comfort to keep you from fruit great a great amount of people believe first two but there were also some unbelieving jews who stirred up the gentiles watched this and poisoned their minds against the brother what what in the world does that mean that they convinced them they convinced these gentiles of something sinister they poisoned their minds what what could be used and i need to spend a little time here how do you poison a mind there's some sort of drug that they use thank you dean misinformation words can poison the mind that's why you got to be careful about what you say are y'all are y'all are y'all seeing how how words can impact others i i need you to note this that's why the new testament epistles to the churches are so intent about talking about words and corrupt conversation your conversations can poison minds the enemy uses the weapon of words to convince people that there's something wrong with the cross and if we're not careful with our conversations we can be guilty of doing uh some mind poisoning you can get somebody to not like somebody based on what you say about them that's why you don't like some people you ain't never actually had a conversation with tom wesley you you have ideas about people you've never met based on the words of somebody else you've believed people about other people and you don't even know who they are and here's the sad reality y'all ready it happens in the church all the time i know we i know uh-huh all right let me move y'all don't like this kind of talk look at look at the a clause of verse three verse two the unbelieving jews stir up the gentiles poisoned their mind against paul and barnabas a cause of verse three therefore they stayed there a long time wait y'all that doesn't even seem to actually connect they had opposition therefore they stayed you would think that the the connecting clause would be they had this opposition so they shook the dust off their feet and went to another place right you would think that's what happened in the last chapter this opposition stirs up they put them out cool we'll leave he here it is one i need you to know the difference between weapons in the end of acts chapter 13 and and what happens here in verse number three um force being forced to be removed is not the same as opposition there's a difference between being put out and walking away okay there's a difference between being put out and walking away some places you are forcibly pushed out of other places the enemy wants to make you so uncomfortable that you'll leave on your own here's what i want you to see for paul and barnabas the evidence or the for paul and barnabas opposition was actually evidence that they were in the right space because the devil will never attack what's not purposeful and the moment the opposition showed up they knew this is where we're supposed to be that's why verse number three starts with therefore their staying was directly connected to the opposition do you see it in the text unbelieving jews stirred up the gentiles and poisoned their mind against the brother brethren so they stayed speaking boldly in the lord do you see this i need i need y'all to stay here i need y'all i need y'all to see see this what comes against you is oftentimes evidence that you're right where you're supposed to be we have this sad sad sad view of suffering that that somehow suggests to us that if it gets too hard it's the lord's way of trying to pull us out of something but if you study the narrative of the early church you will actually discover the total opposite often times the evidence of something against you is that you're actually right where you're supposed to be you you're talk well ain't no more peace here so i guess i'm just supposed to leave because it's actually the more opposition oftentimes is because the greater the assignment and you're right in the center of god's will how do i know study the ministry of jesus the life and ministry of jesus suggests to us that the presence of opposition takes place because you're right where you're supposed to be that's actually what the apostles pray in acts chapter four remember at the end of acts chapter four right after after their release from after healing the man of the gay call beautiful they have a prayer meeting and in the prayer meeting they say lord give us um the ability to stand in the middle of the opposition don't stop the opposition give us strength for it because the more opposition exists the more we know we're doing what you've called us to do you do do you see do you see how important this is sometimes you gotta embrace antagonists because that means you have an assignment there therefore they stayed speaking boldly in the lord watch this who was bearing witness to the word of his grace granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands watch this part of the reason that they could not leave there they knew they couldn't leave there is because the more opposition took place the greater the power of the holy spirit at work was in them so what's what it's suggesting is there is this power that is attached to the gospel there was some power attached to their preaching that there were signs and wonders being performed too we are not called to preach a gospel we don't get to experience every day so if they're preaching that jesus showed up to heal send sick diseases and then somebody gets healed it affirms the word signs will follow those who believe jesus says this idea is that there is there is a witness to the word and that is transformation in their midst so part of the reason you need to embrace opposition is because whenever there's the gospel and there's opposition there's also power that's going to be displayed these are thematic things that we see through our acts are y'all walking with me check this out this is good verse 4. but the multitude of the city was divided part sided with the jews part sided with the apostles do you see what the gospel at work and power will always do it will bring division do you remember g there there is there is something that jesus says that is one of the hardest texts to rationalize and that is he says i came to turn people against each other if i mother against daughter father i'ma turn people against each other this is actually what jesus is talking about when when when you embrace jesus it will cause a line in the sand to be drawn you you've heard it say it this way you can't serve two masters look at what the next part says you will you will love one and hate the other battle lines in the sand whenever the gospel moves in power one of two things is gonna happen you gonna love jesus or you're going to hate him somebody can hate jesus jesus said the world hates me whenever the gospel moves in power it will create some division and i know we think that um the gospel is the bomb or the cure-all to all the world's aches and that is true but because the gospel is foolishness to those who are perishing there will always be division that happens because of the gospel that's why the moment you started living for jesus for real the people that you thought loved you all of a sudden started distancing themselves from you yes the moment you said as for me and my house we gonna serve the lord your kids walked away have you experienced it before the city was divided homes get divided behind the gospel friendships get divided behind the gospel now we know that there's a right side and the wrong side but the reality is everybody's not going to choose jesus check out verse five it was one thing when it was just words and when a violent attempt was made by both the gentiles and the jews with their rulers to abuse and stone them they became aware of it and fled to lystra and deerby cities of lassonia into the surrounding region they were preaching the gospel there this is this is an interesting part of the scripture because i need you to see that holy boldness does not mean foolishness right they according to verse 3 had boldness but they knew that every fight wasn't their fight to fight discretion is the better part of valor and the same holy spirit that'll lead you into a space will give you an awareness of certain things going on and let you know when it's time to leave that space the text says they became aware that there was an attempt to abuse and stone them now here's why this is just an interesting thing to ponder paul and and really not just while the apostles up to this point have dealt with abuse they've been arrested and beaten stephen has been stoned philip has been beheaded at this point that or james rather james has been beheaded at this point like they have shown a willingness to die for the sake of the gospel yet in this text they ran does it mean that somehow they're not as saved or spiritual as the others no but it was not their time yet and you gotta learn which battles are yours to fight and when it's time for you to move on don't sacrifice the rest of your assignment trying to prove that you're bold am i making sense to you the same spirit that'll lead you to a place and let you know when it's time to leave that place don't stay when the spirit says it's time to go that doesn't show um boldness that actually shows pride they were submitted enough to the holy spirit to know when it was time to speak up and when it was time to leave here's a here's a good way to say it it ain't in the scriptures but i think it's a biblical principle that we see in the text you got to know when to hold them know when to fold them go in the walkway know when to run get out of here you see it in the text and who gives that discernment but holy spirit that's why it's so important for you to be in tune with his voice he'll give you boldness for the seasons it's time to speak up and he'll give you directions for when it's time to move and and and here's here's here's how how you know y'all remember when um because yeah let me explain it this way i'll show it to you in the text do you remember uh when elijah is sent to this brook uh in the middle of a draw when you know when ahab and jezebel after they want to kill him he's he's at this brook being sustained by the brook and ravens and bringing the food there is there is something showing up to feed him every day so that he knows he's in the right place and what was the evidence that it was time to go the brook dried up there was certain evidence that said it's time to move because your provision is no longer in this space there's actually a similar thing that happens in this text that's not seen if you don't look at it what's going on at the end of verse three opposition shows up in verse two verse three they stay they get this boldness and there are these signs and wonders right place a violent attempt is made my my belief is that that stuff dried up because it was time for them to move on there are certain things that start to dry up when it's time for you to move express that's a that's a good sign for you to know okay the lord is moving me to a next place because something different is happening here michael says to you the holy spirit says there's a plot on your life don't stay here and die ooh make sense so they move to the next place they're preaching the gospel there watch what happens i'm about to i'm about to affirm or prove the point that i just made to you and then lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting a from his mother mother's womb who had never walked this man heard paul speaking paul observed him intently saying that he had faith to be healed verse 10 and said with a loud voice stand on your feet stand up straight on your feet he leaped and walked uh-oh verse 10 watch this miracles transition from the place that they were to the place that they moved to because the brook was in another place now the flow was in another place now the power was in another place now that's the evidence that you move to the right place making sense to you do y'all see that in the text okay now let's let's go back to this quick uh healing conversation because there's some beauty here that i need you to see what is paul doing in in verse by the time we get to verse number nine he is preaching he's preaching paul's preaching and as he's preaching there is a man who who's been crippled from his mother's womb no strength in his feet with the texans he he never walked but he's sitting in church lack of a better time hearing paul preach and and two things happen almost simultaneously he's looking at paul intently so there was something about the word that had an impact on this cripples man's heart how do we know because the bible also says that paul saw it here it is i need you to note this if you're taking notes somewhere i need you to write this down the the strength of your message is not as impactful if you don't see people i don't care how good you preach if you can't see people y'all need me to prove it don't worry i got time today acts chapter number three peter and john are going to the temple at the time to pray and they show up to the beautiful gate and there is a man who's been there lame can't walk for some 38 years and the bible says that peter and john see him now why is that so important because if you follow the ministry of jesus the ministry of jesus will show us that there are at least two or three times that peter and john have been with jesus walking to that same temple meaning that jesus peter and john had passed that man by before but now that peter and john got the holy spirit they see somebody they hadn't paid attention to and because they saw him he was healed i know you got word but can you see people while peter's speaking he's also seeing because oftentimes i need you to hear this god wants to do more than just give them a message he often wants to give him a miracle too and if you don't see people you wouldn't know here's another thing you need to see this is this how i know that's how i know peter saw because um how would he know his issue this well if everybody's sitting down listening to the word how does peter know this man's story without having a conversation with him saw him beyond what he wanted to show but look at what the text says when peter sees him he didn't just see him by his issue he saw him by his faith i wish i had time to lean into this like i feel it but i got to move quickly he sees him intently that's what the text says deeply there there is something that the lord showed paul uh he showed paul that that there is something in this man he's seen him deeply and saw that he had faith to be healed because as the word is declared faith is rising lord jesus if you want to know how to get your faith to increase it happens with the word first the word raises his faith his faith increases paul sees him and says get up straight on your feet he has so much faith he didn't stand he leaped and walked now now i need you to see what happens here because this this chapter is loaded and i got to move so quickly because i got so much to cover um when this happens look at look at look at what the text is now when the people saw what paul had done they raised their voices saying in their native tongue the gods have come down to us in the likeness of men and barnabas they called zeus and paul hermes because he was the chief speaker then they then the priest of zeus whose temple was in front of their city brought oxen and garlands to the gates intending to sacrifice with the multitudes um a couple things i gotta gotta hit on here so paul and barnabas are are there this man is healed the the people start to chant or say in their own language the gods have come to us um they call barnabas zeus they call paul hermes these are greek mythological gods zeus is the the god of gods and hermes is the messenger of the gods they they call paul hermes because he's the one doing the talking they call barnabas zeus probably because he's the one standing there but he has probably a regal oar to him now you also have to understand that there is a a story in in their culture that there was a time when when zeus and the hermes came to earth in the form of men to this this village and nobody received them warmly except for one elderly couple and so zeus gets mad and destroys everybody in the city except for this elderly couple so these people see this power at work and automatically assume that it's some other sort of god that they had always worshiped evidenced by the fact that the temple of zeus was in front of their city this is a idolatrous culture who believes in mythology and when they see it they don't want the same thing to happen to them as their mythology taught happened to another village so they are ready to to lavish all of their love on on paul and barnabas thinking that zeus and hermie so much so that they go tell the priest of zeus who who's on the outside of the city y'all bring all the stuff let's sacrifice to these men but they're not saying it in a language that paul and barnabas understand so when paul and barnabas you know he you know see that there's something going on they don't know that they calling them gods but they don't know until they start to make this big fuss about it now which begs me uh to take a minute and pause because i think in this teaching you just missed something extraordinarily beautiful which is paul and barnabas do not speak their native language the people speak in a tongue that paul and barnabas don't know there is a language barrier in the text do you see the length there is a major language barrier in the text paul and barnabas speak a totally different language than the people they're preaching to and the people that they're preaching to speak a totally different language than paul and barnabas where's the translator so when paul tells the man to get up and walk how does he know what paul is saying when paul and barnabas are preaching how do they know what paul and barnabas are saying do you see the miracle in the text how are they communicating with no language connection study study the book of acts you'll discover that the gospel goes to different nations with different languages and none of the apostles have a translator i will never forget um being on the mission being on a mission trip um with some of the seniors uh from being on a mission trip with to costa rica with a group of high school seniors that i had taken when i was a youth pastor we're in costa rica doing some ministry at a church and in a mountainous area well we're doing random community ministry and a man comes down to this community outreach that we're having i had some students who were bilingual and they were the ones doing the most of the communication i was standing off to the side oh observing this alongside a couple of our school administrators and the pastor of the church in costa rica that we were serving alongside and as we're talking they stop our conversation to ask me what language one of our students spoke this student was in a conversation with the man from the community say well she speaks english and spanish but no she can't yeah she speaks english and spanish with shock on his face he runs over to the conversation that she's having with with the man from the community and the pastor asked my student what what did he say say he lives in the mountains and he's has like this community of faith kind of like a church in the mountains and he wants bibles to take back because how did you know how do you know that what he just said except but you don't understand he doesn't speak spanish he comes down every week to try to get talk to us but nobody knows what he's saying because he speaks an ancient language that they only speak in the mountains and nobody knows what he's saying how did you have a conversation with him this is what happens when the holy spirit's at work all she said was i thought he was speaking spanish that's how i heard it i spoke spanish to him he doesn't know that language holy spirit at work language barriers don't stop the gospel this is so good to me y'all sometimes when we read when we read the scriptures we do so with the assumption that everything fits our ideas and worldview not realizing that there are miracles that take place that you don't even know if you don't think about it they don't speak the same language yet somehow or another the gospel is being preached and people are being healed and signs are being performed and people are responding to instructions and they're not even speaking the same language now back to this part of the text because they're not speaking the same language paul and barnabas have no idea what's happening until what until they start to bring all this stuff right that they intend to sacrifice but when the apostles heard this they realize what's going on they tear their clothes and run in among the multitudes right now saying we're man why are you doing this verse 15 also we also are men with the same nature as you and preach to you that you should turn from these useless things to the living god who made the heaven the earth the sea and all the things that are in them who in bygone generations allowed all nations to walk in their own ways nevertheless he did not leave himself without witness and that he did good gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons filling our hearts with food and gladness and with these sayings they could scarcely restrain the multitudes from sacrificing to them now i need you to note the context of this sermon to make it brief and quick the things that they were attributing to the god of heaven were things that this multitude had attributed to their greek gods so the idea that that god gave rain that god made the earth that god gave food and gladness what were where things that they preached in greek mythology only came from their gods what what paul and barnabas are preaching is not your gods our god turn away from this idolatrous nature of yours turn away from this and trust the god of heaven right trust trust our god when they when they realize what's going on they tear their clothes on on the one hand this is a jewish response to blasphemy on another hand it is to show these men who are ready to sacrifice to them that they are human just like they are they were willing to debase themselves just to prove they were no better than anybody else i wish i had time to linger there to show that they were willing to put themselves down to show that they were no bit better than anybody else they ripped their clothes off so that they would see we're not gods with you do y'all see this do you see this image that they were willing to be embarrassed just to prove they weren't better than somebody i'mma say this again because i really don't think y'all do you see the links they were willing to go to prove that they weren't better than people not in church today jack you can't say any man say ouch we want people to think we're better so we look down on people oh y'all don't we don't that's not how we act cool you see somebody that you got a little bit more money than instead of sitting next to them and being close to them we flex on you roll your window up at the stop light oh when's the last time you were willing to show somebody with your presence that that you're no better than them in fact my bible tells me that it was jesus who took off his glory to come to us lowly debased humanity incarnate he was willing to take off his glory to come alongside of us and walk with us but we won't take anything off to walk alongside of people who need somebody to walk with i'll move don't worry about it the bible says no matter what they said they couldn't stop these people from sacrificing to them now this is this is where it gets good lord i got to move quickly so paul and barnabas are here these people just are just lavishing all this love on them oh my god y'all are so great y'all are gods in our eyes y'all are the greatest thing in the world we're going to love you while you're here because we don't want you to strike us down and kill us you're zeus you're hermes until verse 19. then jews from antioch and iconium the last two stops antioch at the end of chapter 13. i called him at the beginning of acts chapter 14 show up to the same place and persuaded the same multitudes that were just calling them gods that they should stone him they stoned him drug him out of the city and left him for dead the same people that propped them up as gods stoned him and dragged him out of the city based on what somebody else said about him this thing on how quickly you can go from being the greatest person in the world to somebody worth being stoned based on the words of other people wasn't it quick what a difference a verse makes one verse we couldn't stop you from sacrificing to us and in one verse based on the testimony of some haters god i wish i had time to linger here based on watch this the false testimony of jealous people you're ready to kill who you just elevated god i wish i had time to linger here based on false testimony their minds were poisoned and they turned against the same people when it happens to you you're in good company how do i know flip your bible back a few pages and let me tell you about a man named jesus who on one day they were saying hosanna hosanna blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord and a few days later the same folk crying hosanna yell and crucify him based on the false witness of some jealous people but i like how the text ends and i got to not stay here too long before i get too happy on a wednesday afternoon look at what the bible says they stoned him and they thought they killed him but just a few moments later he got up does that sound like anybody you know they thought they killed jesus but not too much longer he got up here's what i came to tell somebody if you get put down for the wrong reasons the right jesus will pick you right back up again do i have a witness here that's ever been put down by people that's ever been knocked down but you can testify though they hurt you and though they made you believe you are still standing because if god before you [Applause] have mercy i got to let this alone i'm getting stirred up if god be for me who can be again i got if you've been put down like that you're in good company because to be knocked down with crucifixion pain gives you access to resurrection power they stoned him they drug them out the city but be careful when you let people put you on pedestals the same jokers that'll put you on a pedestal to pull you off it verse 19. they they got there they drug them out the city what the bible says when the disciples those who believed came and gathered around them he got up isn't it good that he didn't get left alone just because he was left for dead and let me pause here and say you better be careful who you let um stay by themselves when they've been knocked down because you might miss a miracle if you don't gather around people that are down this is what community is for community gathers around people who have been knocked down now the text doesn't say this explicitly but i'm just crazy enough to believe that when they gathered around them they prayed for and though he was knocked down when when when the saints get together they got to witness a miracle watch this watch this the difference between the two groups is one group walked away when he was left for dead and another group showed up when they got knocked down which group are you a part of do you walk away from people because they get knocked down are you only close with them when they're on the pedestal are you the type of people that only prop people up when things are good or will you gather around and show up when they get knocked down the lord wants the church to be attracted to people who get knocked down not to people who are propped up god almighty i'm talking better y'all talking to me i only got two minutes okay i only got two minutes um i need to do these next two verses it ain't gonna take me long no next three verses two minutes however when the disciples gathered around him he rose up and went into the city and the next day he departed with barnabas to derby when they had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples they returned to lister iconium and antioch strengthening the souls of the disciples exhorting them to continue in the faith and saying we must go through many tribulations to enter the kingdom of god let me say this real quickly when he gets up in verse 24 i mean in verse 20 he goes right back into the same city where they just tried to kill him they go to dear me and then in verse 21 they go back to lystra iconium and antioch to strengthen the disciples exhorting them to say we got to continue in the faith because we got to go through hardships to enter the kingdom of heaven i'm gonna try to say it one more time cause i don't think y'all feeling me yet he gets stoned the people that stone them go back into the city he gets up and goes back into the city where the people that tried to kill him were he gets up goes to continue preaching the same gospel that just got him stoned and then goes back to the places where the people who led the charge to stone him are to preach to the disciples in that city saying we got to go through stuff to enter the kingdom now here's the beautiful picture of it he was still bloody bruised and beaten from when they tried to stone him and the testimony to the people to strengthen them was not that you won't go through anything but that if you want to make it in you got to go through a lot and you can look at my bruises and my scars and my bloodiness to say i'm going through but i'm standing here to declare i'm still alive because what they tried to do to kill me didn't kill me it actually gave me more resolve to keep preaching this gospel because no weapon formed against me i'm through i can't do no more y'all trying to get me riled up beaten he preaches a message that we got to go through to get in you would think a message to strengthen the people would be if you come to jesus all your wildest dreams have come true that's not the sermon paul preached a sermon that says if you want to get in you're going to take some scars some lumps and some bruises you'll go through some stuff that you didn't think you signed up for but it'll be worth it because th this what he would later on write this momentary light affliction is not worthy to be compared to the glory that shall be revealed i'm willing to go through over here because there's something on the other
