so here we are once again with a completely torn apart BMW parts all over the floor all over everywhere but this this is another reason why BMW engines are junk that is a man who's devoted his life to BMWs welcome to V's garage the dumbest automobile channel in all of YouTube and above me is my very broken 2001 BMW 740i Sport now I bought this thing there's the nicest BMW 7-series that I could find from the greatest generation of BMW 7-series ever in many people's opinion only 80,000 miles and it was still very broken cosmetically it is in beautiful shape but Jonny the car ninja gave me a $5,000 estimate for all the repairs I got here just in time to watch him pull out the transmission there's a seal in there the torque converter seal that has gone bad and it's just puking out to a transmission fluid once we see that we'll dig into the real issue with this BMW the original issue that made BMWs junk the v8s in the 90s and early 2000s and that's the timing chain guides these little pieces of plastic will ruin basically total out a BMW which we shall see why it's so expensive to fix and why the part fails well we could have seen this movie before with all the parts on the ground like the Alpina and the driveshaft is hanging like hanging like a horse yes yes and one thing though a lot less fortunate around this looks a lot simpler ways there's work on yet which is a totally different generation of BMW is that to reach to unbolt the transmission you need that long of an extension yeah Wow not sure if I said this enough times in the last video or maybe I said a thousand times so this is one of those beautiful sedans ever made in the history of 4-door sedans it is just such a timeless and elegant and the lines that beautiful BMW really started going downhill if their styling from here exempt parallel wheels it's just so sharp one thing I didn't point out in the last video though is this trailer hitch which obviously this wasn't for hauling anything this is for like a bicycle mount or something but other than that very very stock car and pretty unmolested now that's an interesting view it looks like it's about to fall out Johnny getting closer alright I caught Johnny complaining a little bit about this classic BMWs his hands are up into nowhere what are you reaching for well here I'll cancel your call for you now there we go there you go thank you uh-huh so they put two bolts and two nuts I don't know why it doesn't make any sense you can't see them but you feel them you just feel me nice well it's out look who's here oh that's a look so where's this seal that's bad oh good yeah well is it supposed to just go out like that it is pretty typical oh also we need to loosen all these apply some Loctite and then we talked him again okay well that seems pretty straightforward so I see you're back John Ross yeah man I'm from the land of running BMWs uh-huh so if it was only $3,000 to fix and it's all fixed and it's perfect then why is it back here oh I don't know I I just felt like driving it that's why I'm Johnny yeah yeah boy genre seeing this thing on the ground it just really makes quite an impression here yeah it's a work of art designed by German guys that were brilliant and as this beautiful carbon roof that has no issues yeah well paint work straight I might I'm not supposed to pull that out I I love your dashboard yeah I love it that's leather work by the finest craftsmen every fiber in here is holding up pretty well though it's fake I didn't explain all this but more importantly it's still in limp mode after you put so there's still more peeling back the onion of crap and the you steering rack that you bought is leaking is leaking yes so a new one you steer $2,000 yeah but I there overnighting another replacement so all we have to do is drop the subframe ago so I'm winning I'm winning with the 740i you were so smug the other day but I guess the transmission out so now I got to tear into the engine yes is this for the crank pulley what are you breaking my tools Wow this time it's so I guess step on is crank pulley and you said it's not the easiest thing to do I can tell it's gonna break the tool is in John Ross is the holder of the flywheel yeah there's a flywheel keeper in here but I'm also holding the second tooth so we don't have it all all right with a power ninja number two breaker bar down look at the twist in there too ouch ouch and I missed this one but apparently he broke that one off too so John Ross is kind enough to go get us another one that hopefully won't break in the meantime you'll put the car down and take some other things off yeah and so this is what keeps breaking your your breaker bars right but looks like a lot else has to come off too huh so this very simple this water pump mm-hmm and let's this guy Oh alternator oh it's a water-cooled alternator that's right BMWs and they're water-cooled alternators very expensive so now we have all this now the way you have room to get the big gun in there try and loosen this this pulley up huh we'll try here we go about this oh it's long if holy yeah that's a heck of a bolt oh yeah those look pretty good they weren't leaking he's know where they were yeah oh look inside the spark plug oh oh yeah they were okay well good thing we're doing it then yeah and that crazy alternator is out where is it right there so this is a thousand dollar water-cooled alternator you can't see anything miss Maya why do they do that what's the purpose of it nothing out here and I designed it so they were just stupid yeah can finally see deep into the abyss a fail but this whole big thing has to come off how many bolts Johnny freedom extra freedom I'm very helpful as usual I was like 23 volts on this thing yeah yeah they love doing and now we see bottom sure starting to see why this job so expensive Johnny yeah okay I hear Johnny cursing in a language I've I'm not familiar with so what's going on get some flan cherries frozen won't come out so you're using this big guy I mean you should come by hand let's take the bolt out of it it just falls off and it moved a little bit nope no okay so pulley back on to give yourself more leverage it makes the engine move a lot more I pull back and I've done a lap oh yeah oh yes that is a man who's devoted his life to BMWs all right the double bar goodness just think whoever put this in at the BMW factory 20 years ago was eating his Wheaties probably so ninja has decided the caveman method isn't gonna work now he's got a pulley puller it's not what it's called yeah pulley puller sword in the stone we'll get the green does that mean just throw away the engine no well thinking man's way didn't work and now we're going back to caveman days really nothing not fireworks for the poor okay [Applause] disappointed [Applause] that is not smell good you're burning the seal out of this thing so don't count this tiny chains I'm just special okay slide by hand what you're gonna have nightmares about that for the rest of your life huh yes now we can finally get this cover off victory yeah you win for a change yeah and there is a fully exposed timing chain so the purpose of the timing chain is to keep time with the chain right yes this one this is a failing point see okay so this guide here which basically slides this is this is plastic yeah and it just wears through and give slack on the chain and then tosses it and then valves meet piston and engine dead car dead heavy and they after that they're very not happy ending and the wishbone the wishbone is out so here we are once again with a completely torn apart BMW parts all over the floor all over everywhere but this this is another reason why BMW engines are junk yes BMW used bad plastic in a very critical area of the engine but it's not entirely BMWs fault it also has to do with whoever decided to put in their maintenance intervals back when this car was new they said you could do an oil change once every year or 15,000 miles and having old dirty oil in the car just all kinds of bad things including more grits which would wear out this plastic quicker but really the plastic just due to age and we're just fails and it's not a matter of if but when it hadn't failed on this BMW yet but I wanted to do it as a preventative because this rarely lasts more than a hundred thousand miles work well aged wives were getting close to 20 years old now BMW isn't the only bad German brand have issues with timing chains Audi it's even worse the Internet's to come out and even Ford has made mistakes with that front and rear timing chain on the 4 litre v6 even Mercedes back in the 80s had the issues with a single row timing chain that would stretch the chain the tensioners would fail but they didn't cheap out on the plastic guides that they didn't do that so BMW well shame on you except it'll be fixed the new one looks really nice hotel I'll show you now Johnny you look like a man who's questioning his life choices right now that's flange flange tip the best with me you already start working on Mercedes or something Ford's yeah here hold this let's compare it to the new timing chain guide what's different smooth grooved oh I see the groove in the old one the new one is not moved in or worn at all and hopefully it's a better plastic huh I hope so it's newer yeah obviously but keeping up on tighter oil change intervals will help too huh very deep dusted so super brittle yes so I was pretty smart to do that as just a matter of time exactly yeah just any day really I could have woke up in this engine and would have just completely grenade it so anyway thank you for watching [Music]
