okay hoses look how simple that is too that was a ninja no ninja now welcome to hoovy garage the dumbest automotive channel in all of youtube and this is my 1989 bmw i believe that's right here bmw 325 ix i bought it from someone that let it sit for a very long time and it has a bunch of leaks now normally i would let the car ninja do all the work on this to where i don't have to get my beautiful hands dirty but it's kind of a rainy snowy nasty day in kansas and i don't have anything else to do and these are supposedly a joy to work on unlike modern bmws the car ninja says this car is so easy to work on that a trained ape could do it which is a pretty high bar to set uh considering my skill set but still i'm going to try to fix several leaks on this thing do some maintenance and that includes the timing belt which i've never ever done a timing belt before and i don't know are these interference engines yes they are interference engines so if i do mess this up and then piston meets valve and bad things happen but before we dive into this thing i want to talk about bmw's history a little bit or where they've gone since then because these cars while they're a joy to work on bmw's really haven't been since that's why johnny is a multi probably deca millionaire because he gets to work on all these wonderful broken bmws in a shop and they've changed a lot even though they're inline sixes and they're very similar on paper they have gotten infinitely more complex and that's why a trained ape could do a valve cover gasket on this car but on this 535 right here a bmw dealership would want over a thousand dollars for a valve cover gasket over a thousand dollars so let's just look at the differences and ninjas join me and he has a small correction so a valkyr gasket on that costs a thousand dollars here right yeah so the dealer it's more way more way more so like two thousand dollars something like that i think customers that they said like 2500 bucks easy 2500 bucks well we'll get to that in a little bit but look at the valve cover on this one first i see uh what is it eight nuts to take off and then does intake would have to come out of the way no absolutely not just this bolt the bracket the bracket off that's it and that's it that's it i guess this comes loose with that and the timing belt rests somewhere around here right here yeah okay so i have to take this coolant hooks off all the hoses and the uh fan and the fence route okay i'm gonna help you with a fan this is kind of tricky all right and then you can do the rest all right should be easy well so i'll start with all that and the hoses and then once i get there i'll come back to you for help but explain to me how this well that's like two or three hundred dollars max right to do a valve cover gasket yeah and this oh god holy crap where is it yeah um is it this is plastic this is it here yeah and usually they break somewhere in here they crack all the time so once you have it out i might as well just replace it so these injectors go over the valve cover gasket yes yep yep and what else has to come off uh coils all the harnesses the uh air box of course the uh whole rail all this crap right here and that's why nobody fixes them and for you to do all that it's a thousand dollars yeah so that's how bmw has evolved from the 80s until today and not only is it infinitely more complicated but the engines are not very well built right because what the turbos go bad on these things all the time what else goes wrong in these engines well uh they have pretty much zero tolerance on the uh um rod bearings so you need to do your old changes like constant and constant otherwise i mean we have so many lock-up engines you know really so yeah so they're not very robust as far as and then bmw had those 15 000 mile oil changes back in the day yeah bad idea valve seals on these no no because that's more the v8s which yet again that's what this uh this is a five series up here seven series another set of valve seals which is pretty much the same owner as the blue car oh really yes wow well he's a glutton for punishment yeah let's just look at this it's so ridiculously complicated ah they're easy well it's easy for you because you've done a hundred of them maybe one day i'd let you do one well you're that's why you're a multi-millionaire not sure i have absolutely no desire to ever touch any of those cars it's kind of fun to go back to the 80s and do this but honestly i don't see the future of internal combustion engines being that bright because they're already so complicated i mean at this point just from a practical standpoint electric car makes sense because it's so much simpler way easier to work with way easier because this to make it emissions of compliant to have all the horsepower the smaller displacement it's just too much so we should just embrace electric cars are all by cars from the 80s i guess i blab procrastinated enough i should start wrenching huh yep yeah actually before i dive into that 80s goodness i need to pay for some parts so i've teleported myself back to my garage so i can thank ridge wallet for sponsoring today's video i got their titanium model earlier this year and it's really simplified a part of my otherwise disorganized chaotic life ridge wallets are light sleek and industrial it doesn't fold or awkwardly bulge in your back pocket and it seriously changed my whole pocket situation if you notice all my jeans are worn from my old bulky wallet and there's probably a matching dent on my rear as well and the flexing of the old leather wallets on my buns of steel would bend or wear up my credit cards and my id cards pretty quickly with my new slim ridge wallet i can hold up to 12 cards plus room for cash there's over 30 colors and styles to choose from including carbon fiber and burnt titanium i love it enough to have made the switch but don't take my word for it just take a look at their thirty thousand five star reviews on their website as well which is also so confident that you'll love it that they'll let you test drive it for 45 days you can send it back for a full refund if you don't like it with their durable construction ridge wallet is able to offer a lifetime warranty as well so you could carry one wallet for life obviously these make great gifts for the holidays as well especially for people that are hard to shop for like me so support me and my generous sponsor and get ten percent off today by getting your own ridge wallet with free worldwide shipping and free returns by going to ridge.com hovies which is linked in the description below that's ridge.com hovies and use the code hoovies to get your discount now let's see if i really am dumber than a trained ape well you guys already know the answer to that but let's let's get back to wrenching on the bmw so ninja says he can do a valve cover gasket and timing belt in under two hours on these under two hours which is insane there's no way to be able to do that but it does look very very simple so i guess i'll just just get started in getting this thing off okay the valve cover's off and that took all of ten minutes and probably five it was just me getting acquainted with the unfamiliar toolbox so really absolutely child's play but next i have to drain all the coolant out and i actually need to get a drip pan off before i do that so the car is going to go a little bit in the air actually before we go up let me get this valve cover gasket off here ah yes look at that and it's an actual gasket not someone just putting silicon around the metal uh valve cover itself and smashing it down like so many modern cars nice thick very easy it's so nice so where's the up button on this thing where's the up button on this thing oh that's it's so tiny yeah until it hits the thing yep okay perfect wizard eat your heart out yes oh yes it's nice of this car still has its drip pan but you look behind it and it is just a horrible horrible oily mess so this thing had sat for a very long time the timing belt sticker says 2006 was the last time built change which is a long time on an interference timing belt that's supposed to be done every 30 000 miles but the thing is this car has only been driven like 10 000 miles in that 15 year period so that's why we're doing it just out of an abundance of caution i also need to do a lot of other maintenance down here but uh i'm not gonna focus on that yet let's just get this pan off to where i can start draining coolant and then get to this timing belt okay hoses look how simple that is too wowza ninja hello you're a a double samurai dual lifesaver what the heck is that those are your fan wrenches for bmws okay why is that one this is to hold your uh um water pump pulley all right well i guess i'll observe yes um oh we're going up again all the way up i just put it down bmw has to be backwards he missed oh you got it it's loose yes okay well it makes us do that before i pull the hills like you said otherwise we would have been yeah it's gonna drip all over the place okay all right oh oh okay it's free yep all right wonderful so this is all yours now all right so which hose should i pull first um i mean rule of thumb is the lower right there it's over here yeah okay there it is unless i can give you another suggestion uh take all your belts off first very simple 13 and then loosen the 19 here it comes right off same thing on the power steering and then alternator on top or you can just cut them off because i got you new ones i think i'll cut them off [Music] okay radiator's out this uh cap and rotors off i don't know what to do from here it's somewhere in here yes yes there's three screws one two and three i'm gonna go grab my allen wrenches i'm gonna pull those out and then these four screws here they have to come out all right and then there is like is that a water pumper yes okay yeah all right and then there is this 13 millimeters here they have to come out there's like six of them oh and then this one is in two pieces though got it okay just the pulleys around the crank and then the water pump and then this bracket and you'll help me with this yeah that's very simple yeah make a pretty good nurse to your doctor don't i uh-huh you'd hire me yes yeah well the nurses managed to do all this but now we're back with dr ninja you did good i did okay so now you're turning the engine looking for top dead center or something yes oh you can hear the compression going here which is good so see the line right here okay yes there is a notch right here all right okay there is a notch right here right here yeah and there is a nut right here okay so it's lined up oh boy they use the ac delco that's not quality not bmw yes no all right there's the 13 right here what's that that's for the spring for the temperature so it goes in a little bit and let go here goes the tensioner no it won't come out then you grab a pry bar okay bring it back and then tighten it back you might pull the belt off okay so there are three tensioners should be easier should be either throw the tensioner right here oh okay oh oh well thank you for letting me have the owner there all right all the way around well how about that well i feel manly ninja very very macho yes you did good uh there is one thing since we have it apart once we put the timing belt down i highly recommend uh readjusting the valves oh okay so these are it's very solid yeah ah well um that sounds fine except i've been here three hours and you said the whole job takes you two hours so it's dark and uh dinner time so maybe two week continue to tomorrow tomorrow is it all right well i'm back bright and early in the morning to work on my bmw some more yes bright and early um you've been working quite hard though so what have you done today so far i've done a lot probably four cars four cars and how many billable hours in that at least ten probably 10 billable hours and four that's how good the ninja is so i need to continue on to this you say i need to take off the water pump yes because the uh the tensioner mounts on it it's very simple only five screws one two you got three over there and that's it you can handle that much right i can handle that yes okay and then you'll put the new tensioner on and we'll work together the timing belt yes very good okay oh easy peasy drain the block all righty then you get your razor blade yeah let's get the old jacket up okay nice clean and off we go very good so that's my new water pump yes and i applied some there is this gasket maker a thin film to hold the gasket in place all right i just let that stick and then go back in the way she came yep nice and easy what i have to inspect your my scraping yeah passable yep yep yep all right now the water pump's on and the ninja is taken over from here because this is not something i'd trust myself with necessarily the the bells gonna go on yes yes this is a very nice looking new tensioner as well very good all right well i can i can nurse it i suppose what does the nurse do in this situation what's in there tighten it back up and then you spin the engine twice and then you let go the tensioner one more time there's those compression noises again well if we pull the plugs out it makes it way easier yeah easy engine rotate and uh piston has not mashed valve it seems because it's turning yeah we're all the way around at least once now right yes no it's almost right there kind of sounds like me after taco tuesday all right so all of this now needs to go back on however i i took it off yesterday yeah i have short term memory issues they need to go to the parts washer oh so i need to wash them yes okay well i can handle that well that was very very satisfying to do i also definitely got something on my hands that's cleaned it better than it's ever been cleaned before but ninjas doing something without me i see feeler gauges which means valve adjustment yep how's it looking so far perfect so you don't even need to adjust the belt so far no last one man this car is well well taken care of everything with intolerance it's beautiful as you can see the timing belt cover is back on and the ninja has just sort of taken over which i'm absolutely fine with at this point because he's about at least 10 times faster than me it's absolutely ridiculous but it is it's incredibly grimy down here there's still the oil pan gasket to do quite a bit the struts is there a reason why it needed to be on the uh top of the lift post there mr tippy toes because i thought you were doing it so oh well thank you i can i can put on bolts i can i can finger tight things over there yeah i got it i got it so i replied to one email one email took maybe a minute and look up and all the belts are on seriously okay so the car's ready to go down for the next part yes i really can help you i really will help if you want me to but it seems like i just get in the way i mean at least i left everything somewhat organized for you right yep yep that makes it easier i'm just painfully slow practice i can barely wield chopsticks and you're like a full out samurai all right water pump pulley and then the next belt and then radiator and hoses valve cover valve cover and then start see i have a lot of theoretical knowledge but then the practical application i just become totally incompetent what does what does that mean well then she had to deal with a customer running his business so i did one thing i was able to put the radiator back in and then i started to do this and he stopped me he's he's squirting it just getting everything nice and clean in there yeah it definitely looks like a low mileage bmw doesn't have a very low mileage yes yeah i'm impressed 94 000 miles yeah and then we can uh i guess work together you'll let me do the valve cover gasket while you do hoses and things well would you look at this all back together and clean well it took me four hours to take apart took the ninja like less than an hour to slap back together which is supposed to take longer to put things back together right yeah because when somebody takes it apart where each screw goes where you know so almost there almost there and you like the blue bmw coolant huh it's yes a kool-aid and i can hear it almost coming up you're not supposed to drink it no you're not like wizard you don't you don't taste do you no okay moment of truth here you're a ninja how many of those do you think you've done i can't remember hundreds probably well i probably could have done it maybe maybe but i mean seeing how fast you're able to blow through things how well the book time on this is like three hours something like that and you're able to do it in two and then plus all the other things you're able to do like the valve seals over there for half the time it's why bmw mechanics they're usually uh richer than bmw owners let's let's be honest right i mean come on can be can be yeah i mean come on you're doing really well you bought the car trek ferrari this beautiful shop you're like a gazillionaire i assume right oh more than that i mean these hands they just i'm not good at it i guess if i kept going i could get better but i've been working on cars for a long time and every time i do it it seemed to get worse i don't know how that works but i get worse i'm just better at making stupid youtube videos that are really stupid so i'm going to stick to that you can stick to this exactly you'll continue on the hoopty rescue mission of the 325 there's still a lot of parts and a lot of cleaning and then then this car is back thank you for watching you
