hey guys mr. girl Valerie Ortiz here and you're watching American Latino TV celebrating American Latino pride and we celebrate because it has never been more fun to be a Latino and first up to help us kick off the celebration is one of the funniest Latinas in comedy she hails from the Bay Area she had the looks that helped make her an NFL cheerleader and the talent to get her cast on shows like mad tv and is now one of the most successful touring latina comedians on the standup circuit she experienced she is Angela Johnson and she's coming to you right here only on American Latino TV I'm Angela Johnson I'm a comedian I'm an actress I'm an entertainer like if our eyelashes is braided together I will cut you it's kind of easy transitioning into telling jokes when you cheer for the Raiders so it's pretty easy transition you know I guess I was kind of always a funny one even though I didn't really see myself as that person because I come from a family that's really funny I took a joke writing class at a church and the only reason why I took is cuz the class was free so I was like yeah I guess I'll try it and then I wrote this nail salon joke and ended up blowing up on the Internet and it kind of propelled me to where I'm at right now god forbid you have to call 9-1-1 and I answered the phone I have no idea why stand up took off before acting but I just am trusting the process I mean I've been blessed I have three hour specials now and I had no idea of gonna be a comedian and that's what I'm doing so I'm lucky that I get to travel the country and bring joy to people and make people laugh myself comedy is really observational and I'm a storyteller I like to tell stories from my life my marriage my family my relationships my friends my mom you know I like to tell stories of things that I observed that are really relatable to people like to connect with my audience and people so that's usually my intention for all my shows 911 emergency there's a guy trying to get in your house well did you lock the door really on in my career I would always have my hair in a ponytail no lipstick um a hoodie I would just I didn't want what I look like to be distracting I wanted people to just listen and hear what I'm saying I one example was I was at a really on in my career is that a comedy club and the first show I could not get them on board and I just had my hair down full makeup everything and I remember the club manager is the one who told me he was like for the second show I want you to pull your hair back in a ponytail put your hoodie back on and take your lipstick off I said okay so I went out there is completely different when I was non-threatening when I was the one of the guys girls you know what it means then they were like okay we could get on board you know but when I wasn't that way I had to prove myself for the first ten minutes of my set that I was funny and then they would jump on board with me I've always had a very diverse audience um and I think I'm very diverse myself I'm I'm Mexican but I don't speak Spanish you know like I'm fourth generation and um I am a modern American that is latina but I relate to so many different people so many different cultures you know I grew up in San Jose where there's a lot of these people black people Mexican people Indian people like a melting pot of people where I grew up so I have a lot of different cultural influences in my life and so I'm sending the cops they're on their way but it's gonna be like 15 minutes you better find a hiding spot and don't get under the bed they always look there first
