[Music] [Applause] [Music] we're back here Oh Delina taro [Music] come on bobbies are you ready to go back come on old Lila I wonder how long it'll take send them to the side to follow me back to the fenced area oh here they come I hope they come around here come around here guys so I can get you on film come through here they're my good girl boy hi Odie hi precious oh yeah my big juno where's taro taro are you coming you're always the last one aren't you you're on top where are you going a different way maybe he's going a different way I'll know when I hear the thundering of hooves or not that guy's pretty stealth [Music] there he comes there's my handsome hos my handsome man yes I was waiting for you now of course I've set it up so that when we go back we're gonna have some alfalfa at the barn so I'm not calling them with the expectation that I'm gonna get them to come back to the pastures that have nothing to eat and then just close the gate and walk away because you know you just have to think logically why would they come that would be a really bad idea that would be like home stupid so you know or if I say oh I want you to come back so I can make you run circles in an arena till you're sweaty and sore like that wouldn't be a reason to come either so I just kind of treat them the same way I would a human we're one of my dogs but when asking for something there's got to be a good logical reason why they would want to do that and so now we're in a nice cool spot and I'm also this is a reciprocal relationship so I'm feeling their energy and it feels to me like they'd like to stay here for a bit before we go back for alfalfa so I'm gonna go sit on that log there and just hang out and be with them and wait until they signal me that they're ready to go back or I might ask again and then they say yeah let's go back and have our alfalfa and Cody's gonna get her tail brushed out it's gotten quite tangled it's pretty cool when your relationship with your horse moves beyond ooh look what I can make my horse do to a state of back and forth and friendship and true intimacy where everybody's needs and desires are taken into account and nobody's bossing anybody around or forcing anyone to do something just because they can it's such a magical place to be and it makes our world so much bigger these guys went from semi-feral to me being able to take them out on the road with just a neckloop because our relationship is based on our connection and I am their safe place and their place of good things so when things go sideways or like you know cars coming I had a truck come and then gun its engine right when it gets alongside the horse and the horse startles and goes to take off but when it hears me saying Who which of course I've trained them to voice signals before I put anything on them at all as soon as it hears my voice whoever it is slows down to a trot and waits for me to catch up and doesn't take off I have not had any one of these horses take off take off on me no matter what's happened they might startle and bolt for 10 or 20 feet but they stop dead they look for me and wait for me to catch up with them and then I pick up their rope or whatever we have and we carry on and it's such a different space to be in so when I I started working with Oda Lena they're my big Belgian cuz she's the eldest she's about five and a half now so her bones will be fully formed by six or seven she'll be actually able to carry some weight without deforming but I want again I want riding if she wants to be ridden to be entirely about choice so we've started that process now we've started that process of me sending her pictures of us riding together in the kind of unity where our bodies become one being like a centaur and showing her how fantastic that is and maybe she wants to enter into that kind of relationship with me and so she's started by saying well maybe I'd like you to start off by sitting on my bum cuz that's the easiest place for me to carry you and me going wow I have no idea how I would hold on back there but okay if that's what you want and then I start leaning on her bomb and then she says I'm really hot then I go well just another minute she goes nope you failed and she walks away so what she's training me is to say if you want to come on my back and if we're gonna have that kind of relationship you need to listen to me the second I say get off stop I'm uncomfortable and not do you know my default thing which is to say oh just a few minutes longer oh but this is so lovely can we just go a little bit further and you know I'm the one who needs to be trained in that before we can even talk about me putting all of my weight on her back and building those muscles that she's going to require to carry me and so on and so forth it's it's such an exciting journey it's so full of possibility and unknown and fun stuff yeah she's my first my first partner who made me go and get all the rest of these guys and she's pretty awesome so those come over to me and now sheep have you forgotten the path back to the barn oh we just want to slowly make your way there my sense is that she's ready to go back for alfalfa she's usually the first one who's ready to go home but then she's got waylaid by a little patch so she's gonna stop it eat her bit or maybe she doesn't feel comfortable being the first one to go or maybe she would like to me to lead the way and she just came over to say hey I'm ready so this is what I mean about the back and forth and the dialogue and the relationship and when you learn how to trust those pictures or feelings or intuition it's very faint at first and so you just decide to trust the first thing that flashes to you and then you go with that and you'll see very soon whether you were right or wrong and you just go this is like a muscle I need to build this I need to exercise it for it to get strong for it to get strong enough that that I know what I'm actually hearing is what she's saying or the pictures I'm receiving her actually from her and you realize that this is a practice and it doesn't happen overnight and it takes time and so for me now she's I feel she's come over and said I'm ready to go home but she's not ready to lead the way home so now it's back over to me am I ready to go home because I'm pretty sure if I were to head for home right now she would follow me and then pretty soon afterwards the rest would follow Robbie OD she really likes Rafa too so now it's up to me but I'm actually having a really good time out here now so if I'm ready to go back some kind of thing well one of you kind of make a definitive decision and then I'll follow you whoever feels the most strongly about going back is is the person that needs to make the first move is how I'm feeling and that's what I'm sending to them I'm sending to them that I'm totally open I'm good with whatever happens somebody take the lead how many make the first moves and that doesn't have to be me just cuz I'm the human it's so ridiculous you know the definition of an intimate relationship is that there is a back and forth and there's a dialogue and sometimes I lead and sometimes they lead your ears are itchy and everything's negotiable she's like put on your gloves so you can really get in there and scratch something scary you OD yeah you think mama Oh meanwhile Jax has hopped over that log making a definitive statement that he's ready to go for home so there's the path through there that's really easy but I think I'm gonna follow him over the log because that's more fun for me I'm following you Jackson you gonna jump well you think OD are you gonna follow me over the law you're gonna go around to the path where is Juneau oh that's T in the bushes I think June oh there's two alright Jack see coming down behind you oh but look you found really good grass there you're not gonna want to go back from there are you you know ease is not concerned about getting his nose flicked you're gonna come hop the log roll man yeah get up on the log yeah I'm gonna back up because if you're gonna jump it you need some sake oh now on tars rolling in the same spot looks like a really good idea I think although - yeah the first few times we came back here they were just so jazzed up by the wildness of this land and the grass was not trampled down at all from them it was just standing really high making a great cover for all the Coyotes that live back here and if there happened to be a mountain lion in the area that would have plenty of stocking cover too and they were pretty wild when they came back here so it's really nice to see that over time we kind of made it our own and they feel comfortable enough to come back here and forage and some of them are eating grass but a lot of them are eating different bushes and shrubs and bees horses naturally forage 25 to 30 different plants a day if they are in conditions that allow them to do so they're not technically grazers they are foragers that's right there's all kinds of poisonous plants out here but the horses have no trouble distinguishing between what's safe to eat and what's not okay so you see how they're all right around the log here with me and Jack's so I'm gonna start walking back to the barn Jack's you grab a blackberry bush here baby and what happens that's the log that they have to jump and right here is a path in the winter this was open but in the summer it took me like two hours to hawk a path through the brambles here for them back to the barn guys you can come whenever you want you can follow me now or you can come later it doesn't matter I'll go start the chores well here comes jack it's not waiting very you want your own South but don't you big guy my handsome there's my handsome man it's hard you come quietly down that damn oh damn a big girl your mind you know come on no June Bug are you gonna come or should I go Oh cuz Taro's not coming yeah you go get daddy go get dad tell them we're all going back to the barn how come you know how they like to be laughed I'd like to be last up yeah okay how about five she's like do my ears right now before it leaves my mind that's asking too strongly if you do that I won't do your ears you know if you me I don't like that so you see that's for me to say I don't like the way you're handling me so I don't have to get angry I don't have to hit her I don't have to get her to back off and move respectfully away from me I just go no I that's not the kind of relationship I want to be in if you treat me like that I'm out of here I'm walking away and I just walk away and then when she's not so tormented by the bugs they're not driving a crazy she'll probably decide to come over and ask respectfully for her scratches and show me where she wants to be scratched so again it's a back-and-forth relationship I'm not the boss of them but they are also not the boss of me and I get to say just like they do these are my boundaries this is what I like or don't like this is what feels safe to me and if you want to be in relationship with me you need to respect where I not to so it's that two-way street are you gonna run is it too hot you smarter than that you're like this hot day here's a hot day we're gonna walk Jackson's like hurry up I'm in here waiting for the alfalfa Juno I think Odie wants her baby back too she just need to him [Music] she's calling him too ah are you gonna ask no no still not respectfully look often no nope you're not gonna ask respectfully you don't get the scratches I think we should leave them and just get the alfalfa out cuz they'll come yeah let's just go get off alpha no point in us waiting for those two renegades right Jax yeah you came back with plenty of what my hand may get you there yeah get off alpha it's been five minutes all the other horses are eating their ration about alpha help them build muscle and long Mane's and Tails and those out there eating hers and where our gino and tile nowhere to be seen and am I worried nope not yet maybe if it's 15 or 20 minutes then I might see about having to go back there and lead them in or maybe take a long port or stick and kind of beat the bushes to drive the man but I don't think it'll take them that long but the thing is when they do come in I've put out the alfalfa I'm not putting out anymore so again this is about relationship they gotta learn if they don't come when me and the rest of the horses come they're gonna miss their share of alfalfa so they need to then decide is it worth it for them to forage rather than having their falfa or not and let's say if they do that to me one more time I might say well now you're making me feel too insecure about putting you back in the unfenced area so I'm either gonna take you back there one or two at a time haltered if I'm gonna wait till I fence another piece back there before you're allowed back there so again each of us has to determine what we feel comfortable with and how far we want to go and how adventurous we are in our relationship with our horses it's been another you know 10 minutes they're still not back I put two piles of alfalfa inside my little arena panel catch pen that leads to the unfenced area so I'm gonna leave this gate to the unfenced area open but as they come in they can see there's a fallacy here so that reinforces when you come home there's it reward this gate I've closed because I don't need mamma storming back out here looking for her baby after she's had her alfalfa and then they decide they want to spend two or three more hours grazing back here because then that's gonna wreck my day so this is what I'm doing and again I'm gonna leave them and go do my chores [Music] [Applause] [Music] this whole way of being with horses has a lot to do with trusting yourself and walking into unknown situations and saying well I'll figure it out as I go or something will come to me and I'll have some ideas I'm not gonna get really scared and go back there and lure them and because it's more work for me right so I always like to try the easier solution first that still sends the message that I want to send which is when you come in you get your alfalfa and you know for sure is gonna come in because he's still nursing so he's gonna you know need Mom after an hour so probably for sure he's normally nursing every three hours so here's the other reason Montero would rather forage then come back for alfalfa somehow he's managed to open this arena panel because I did not have it tied to this pole and he's coming here because he's the most dominant one and he's attacked the alfalfa pile so why would he want to come in for alfalfa he's like no no I need some forage right now I've been eatin alfalfa all night long so you know mystery solved that's why and we're just gonna have to wait for Juno to need his mama and that's probably what I'll bring him in or I'll go and get them one of the two so here we are about 10 minutes later Jaques just alerted me that they are indeed back Hey you bugger cuz you got into the alfalfa I saw I saw what you did you old monkey [Music] another day another adventure I just love being in relationship with my horses in this way where there is such a real friendship and everyone is a lot of voice and our communication is truly back and forth not just from me to them there's no other way I'd want to be in relationship with my horses in this [Music]
