Sharing because I want to hear what other people think about this short film about transracial adoptees being exposed to a Americanized version of their own ethnic culture.
I think the American family is trying their best to give this girl a good life in the U.S. I have no doubt that actual families that adopt foreign children want nothing but the best for their children. But at the same time, I feel as though there is a social responsibility to expose them to the culture of their ethnic background given how they will forever be perceived by others as Asian in public. In other words, I think they need to try harder.
Iām not adopted, but I grew up in a town where there were not many Asian people. I desperately wanted to be white and even believed it as a kid. Even though I came home to a Chinese family, the dichotomy between the eastern culture I was raised with and the western culture I experienced outside the home created a lot of identity issues for me as a child. It only makes me wonder how transracial adoptees in these situations may feel in these situations.
I feel sympathetic on all sides here.
It's extremely challenging to tell a whole story in such a short amount of time and this film did an excellent job, from the writing to acting to post production. I certainly felt all the emotions Esther was feeling.
Oof.
Was the writer-director, Sidi Wang, giving her own experience?
